Author's Note: This story is set shortly after The Super Mario Bros. Movie and contains SPOILERS for the end of that film as it is an unofficial sequel story, but one perhaps slower-paced and more focused on slice-of-life scenes and the characters. In contrast to my other Nintendo-related fanfic, I will be in keeping with the family-friendly tone of the film, but perhaps attempt to delve a bit deeper into its various implications.

In order of the size of their roles, Peach, Daisy, Mario, and Luigi will be the main characters, with the film's other cast and established Mario characters also making appearances.

A Super Mario Bros. Movie Sequel

"Double Date"

Chapter One
Two Princesses, Three Worlds

Life was good, the day was beautiful, and there was so much to look forward to. With Mario and Luigi by her side, Princess Peach listened intently to the Council of Toads discussing the affairs of the recently liberated Mushroom Kingdom.

Many hundreds of Toads were sent to the penguins' world to help them rebuild their ice palace.

With a newly rebuilt kart, the brave Toad who'd gone with Peach on her adventure was knighted as Sir Toad. He set out with Donkey Kong, Lumalee, and a bunch of Kongs to search for other Super Stars, in order to keep them hidden from villains like Bowser.

To make a long story short, Mario and Luigi, realizing that there were no cell phones nor cell phone providers in this universe, had a bright idea for keeping in contact with DK and Toad's search party.

Not much longer after they saved Brooklyn and posed for that photo op, some very official-looking people from the US government came, and with them, a ton of questions were flung, and several of them were quite concerned at the talking gorilla with 'Kong' in his name. Attorneys for Universal Studios began drafting lawsuits.

Mario took DK aside and said, "I've seen this movie before - it doesn't end well."

"Then let's scramble like some Yoshi eggs," said DK.

"Now wait just a minute," said NYC Mayor Pauline, who walked firmly up to the brothers.

They spun their heads to regard her. Clad in a sleek, red suit, Pauline posed for the cameras as she shook the hands of all the heroes, her face striking a put-on pose between grim and optimistic.

"That was a lot of damage done," said Pauline, surveying the whole block, which had been closed and evacuated due to damage from the burst pipe. Miraculously, no one was killed when Bowser's fortress popped out from the underground, though seven people were seriously injured.

The unconscious Kamek was tied up, shackled, then shaken awake.

He tried to teleport away, but Luigi snatched his staff.

"How does this thing work, anyway?" Luigi asked, but Kamek was staring at the glass jar in Mario's hands.

"Sire! What has happened to you?!" Kamek cried upon seeing the King of the Koopas trapped within.

"They gave me the blue Mushroom!" Bowser screamed. "Where's the Koopalings?!"

Before Kamek could respond, DK flung him over his shoulders and began heading towards the portal. Seeing that the Warp Pipe was flickering, as if malfunctioning, DK turned around to inform Princess Peach.

But Kamek had another staff ready. He repaired the portal, using magic to artificially extend the Pipe to the surface before slipping from captivity and teleporting away.

"I guess it's true what they say," said Peach as Bowser's floating fortress suddenly began getting sucked right back through the Warp Pipe. "Never trust a Magikoopa to not teleport away."

Peach and company looked around for the few of Bowser's minions left who hadn't made it back onto the floating fortress. They were promptly rounded up and caged in a paddy wagon.

After a lot of explaining to reporters, locals, and many people high-up in the United States government, Mario, Luigi, and Peach were exhausted. The captured minions were agreed to be given over to the custody of the Mushroom Kingdom, where they would be tried and hopefully rehabilitated somehow.

And so, after many difficult-to-answer questions, Peach had not only convinced the United States government that she and her people were peaceful and friendly, but she also convinced them to carefully guard the Warp Pipe, with promises that she would do the same on her end.

Peach broadcasted this hopeful message live to the world:

"Friends from another realm! My name is Princess Peach and I am so, so sorry for all of the destruction that monster Bowser has caused today! I have sent my finest medical Toads through the portal, which shall now be carefully monitored by the best and strongest of both of our realms, speaking of which…"

"WA-HOO!" Mario exclaimed as he hopped into the spotlight. Luigi's legs spun as he leaped down from a higher perch.

Thus, an inter-dimensional peace was established. It was historic and Peach was invited to go on a world tour by basically every major foreign dignitary. Peach insisted on all appearances being public and refused private meetings behind closed doors, saying that she did not want to get involved in Earth politics when she really needed to find and discover any other potential threats to the Mushroom Kingdom.

After all of the interviews, Peach and the others checked in to the five-star Baccarat Hotel in Manhattan. She insisted on booking the fanciest suite, the 2,190 square foot Baccarat two-bedroom suite.

Peach and the brothers rejuvenated themselves in the saunas, got spa treatments despite not having any reservations, and chilled out to some jammin' tunes.

Mario and Luigi were uncomfortable and out of their element at the frankly over-the-top treatment, but this was all routine to Peach.

"There are so many karts!" Peach exclaimed as she peered out the window. "But the streets are so boring..."

"Told ya we don't drive on rainbows," Mario said.

"Is that a giant park out there?" Peach asked. "Can we go for a walk tomorrow?"

"Why not?" Mario said, then looked to Luigi, who shrugged. His stomach suddenly grumbled.

"Oh, we haven't eaten dinner yet!" Peach said. "I'm so sorry! Mario, I want to treat your whole family to dinner!"

And so, just a few hours later, they were seated at Dominick's on Arthur Avenue.

Peach treated Mario, Luigi, and their entire family to an incredible authentic Italian meal at one of the best restaurants in New York. Peach dropped an incredible tip, so the owner hooked her up with all of their favorite dishes. They even drank a little wine, and Peach kept exclaiming at all of the new information she was getting.

"Wait, so you don't have airships?" Peach nearly gasped. "And you went to the Moon, but you don't go back anymore?!"

"Well, that's what they tell us, anyway," said Mario's father. "I don't think they ever went. Copernicus and Galileo.. Frauds! Those Freemasons and secret societies, y'know, they—"

"Dad," said Luigi, "we should probably have this part of the conversation back home."

Luigi's father scoffed a little. He gave his son a friendly punch.

"Um…" Princess Peach began.

Their heads all turned her way. She had raised her glass to toast the Super Mario Brothers and was ready to ding it with her spoon.

"You guys… toast here, right?"

"Of course we do, Your Highness!" Mario's Momma replied.

"Right on!" Peach began, then dinged the glass. "Hear ye! I just want to proclaim for all to hear that Mario and Luigi are truly fearless heroes who risked it all to save both of our worlds from that evil monster! And as great thanks for their heroic acts, I'm offering Mario and Luigi a place to stay! They will forever be welcome to live in my Kingdom, and I will employ them as my royal bodyguards and plumbers! Three cheers for the Mario brothers!"

"HIP HIP HURRAY!" everyone cheered thrice.

Mario and Luigi were both stunned speechless.

"You can't be serious!" Mario exclaimed.

"I totally am!" Peach cheered.

And so the legend of the Super Mario Bros. was born.

The next day, the brothers settled their affairs and began planning their move.

Immediately after beating Bowser, Princess Peach had given the brothers some gold coins as a reward for saving her and the Mushroom Kingdom.

After a nice walk through Central Park, Mario and Luigi decided to exchange just one of the coins at a jewelry broker and was astounded to discover that it was worth a fortune.

"This is pure 24 karat gold!" the shopkeeper exclaimed. "Holy smokes. No blemishes, no nicks… I haven't seen anything like it!"

Luigi scratched his head. "So, uh, how much are we lookin' at here?"

The older man weighed the coin on a scale. It was nearly two kilograms.

"Almost a hundred."

Mario gasped.

"Just a hundred?" Luigi raised an eyebrow.

"A hundred thousand!" Mario exclaimed. "Are you serious?!"

The man blinked a couple of times. "This is the real deal. Do I look like I'm kidding?"

Mario exchanged glances with Luigi. They both nodded.

Mario withdrew several more coins from a knapsack.

"Whoa, whoa, I gotta report this to the government…" said the old man. "You're gonna have to pay some taxes…"

"Report away," said Mario, whose mind was spinning with possibilities. "Source unknown."

The Mario brothers decided to buy their parents a nice place upstate, in the country, where they could get away from the grind. They then invested a bunch of their money and renovated the condo.

"There's a call for ya," Mario's Mom said, calling him out of his bedroom while he was studying stock portfolios.

Mario took the phone.

"Hello?"

"Hello, is this Mr. Mario Mario?"

"Sure is."

"Great! My name is Reggie Fils-Aime. I'm the President of Nintendo of America."

Mario gasped.

"Wait, the Reggie?! I'm talking to Reggie Fils-Aime right now?!"

"That's right, kid! Hey, I'm calling because Nintendo of Japan saw what you and your brother did, taking out that giant monster that was terrifying New York City. What a brave and inspiring performance! Anyway, they want to buy the video game rights to your story. And if the game is successful, hey, who knows? Maybe we'll even make a movie or something… what do ya say?"

"Video game rights?!" Mario exclaimed. "Luigi, get in here!"

Luigi, who was in their workshop cleaning and oiling their tools, dashed into the room.

"What is it, Mario?! Is Bowser back?!"

"Actually," said Reggie, "Doug Bowser handpicked me to replace him as President."

The brothers were confused by this, so Reggie clarified, "Never mind. How'd you two like to become video game characters?!"

Seeing as they were gamers themselves, Mario and Luigi couldn't say no to this, and they agreed to a face-to-face meeting sometime soon, and also, that they'd try and get permission from Peach, DK, Toad, and Cranky Kong to feature in Nintendo's games. But first, they had to fulfill their promise to Princess Peach to figure out a long-ranged communication solution for the Mushroom Kingdom.

The brothers then bought twenty long-ranged CB radios, which they coupled with portable solar-rechargeable generators. Astoundingly, these were discovered to work even over long distances, provided that there were other radios set in locations between them. So, being rather handy, Toads set up radio waystations along the main roads.

The brothers would have gone on to help search for Super Stars themselves, but Princess Peach wanted to keep them around so as to learn more about their world, and possibly even visit it.

Bowser, of course, was kept under lock and key with his piano within Peach's Castle, and Peach made sure to put her best Toads - the ones who'd aced the training course and who'd proven to be most effective - on watch.

Thanks to Luigi's suggestion, Bowser's cage was also modified so that he couldn't hurt himself enough to lose the Small Mushroom power-up and grow to his large size. Basically, she wasn't going to take any chances.

As far as the rest of Bowser's allies were concerned, Bowser's armies fled in terror of knowing that the Super Mario Brothers were now living in the Mushroom Kingdom. The brothers had also been seen chasing Goombas and Koopas back to the Dark Lands. The only Koopas willing to fight were the Blue Shell Paratroopas, but even they were apparently regrouping.

In truth, unbeknownst to Princess Peach and the Kongs, Kamek had urged the Paratroopas to stand down and await the arrival of the Koopalings, who were exploring the world beyond the immediate islands in their personal airships to attempt to find more Super Stars, as well as recruit other allies to free Bowser.

King Boo fled to an old, abandoned mansion sitting in the Dark Lands, while King Bob-Omb's eldest son took up his father's mantle, though he'd have to eat lots of explosive material, literally grow into the position, and foster the growth of a sweet mustache.

With the news update finally over and all local disputes settled, Peach decided that she wanted to retire to some cake and tea with the plumber brothers on the castle roof and continue to pry them with questions about their world. After all, she'd only been there for a short period of time, just long enough to answer some questions from reporters and various government agents.

"It seems like just yesterday we moved here," Mario said as they climbed the stairs onto the roof, where Toads had already set up a delicious picnic beneath a covered pop-up tent.

"It's only been a few days," said Luigi, "but it's already feeling like home."

"Things are going to be so different around here," Peach said with glee. "Just think, with our combined strength and heart, we'll keep the Mushroom Kingdom free and independent!"

"And maybe even bring some new ideas in," said Mario, who was wondering what kinds of professional sports Toads engaged in.

"We'd better be careful not to destabilize the global economy," Luigi muttered under his breath.

"What did you say?" asked Peach, but Luigi shrugged it off.

"Ah, nothing."

"Oh! Did you bring the newspaper?" Peach asked them both.

Sure enough, they had. They made the front page. Peach read the incredible story top to bottom, out loud, while reminiscing about that first fateful day.

Back on the roof of Peach's castle, they all reflected on how much their lives had changed.

But little did they know that things hadn't quite reached an equilibrium yet. The times were still a-changin' on them, and that night, as Mario, Luigi, and Peach finally retired from planning out ways to best defend the Mushroom Kingdom and the brothers showed Peach how to cook s'mores over a fire pit, DK and Toad tried out the radios that the brothers had brought back, they sent out little ripples that would grow to become great waves in their near future...

That Very Evening…

Princess Daisy of Sarasaland awoke in her royal four-post bed with a start. She had had an incredible dream, one where she had met a friend from another world, a princess like herself, dressed in pink. This princess was yellow of hair and strikingly beautiful. She was like the slightly older sister she never had.

Daisy also dreamed of a tall, brave, dashingly handsome man with a big nose and mustache, clad in green, and his brother, who was shorter and preferred red. They were all playing some bizarre foreign sport in a different land, and with a bunch of anthropomorphic animals, no less.

Daisy wiped the sleep from her eyes and pulled out her journal to try and recall the visions, but they had disappeared.

Princess Daisy sighed, drank from her bedside water pitcher, and walked to her balcony.

The cool air and radiant moon made even Sarasaland's deserts look like a shimmering wonderland.

She knew they were just dreams, but they felt so real. She wished she had someone to share her excitement with. Her father would never understand, and nor would her servants or subjects.

If Daisy were a little less delirious, she would have noticed that the old radio transmitter she kept in her adjacent home office, which connected directly to the bedroom, was broadcasting something other than static.

We can't fault her for that, though. Daisy was singing to herself. And the radio had been sitting there as long as she could remember. It was an old relic and she barely understood how it worked - her father either thought he knew or apparently figured out how to tweak it, but had long given up on hearing anything from the other end. In fact, the radio would be gathering dust if not for the loyal subjects that kept it clean.

But then Daisy blinked. She noticed a slight something in the corner of her eye. After cartwheeling over to the office, she raised her headphones over her head just in time to hear a feminine voice on the other end.

The voice said, "testing… testing… Hear ye! Hear ye! This is Princess Peach of the Mushroom Kingdom. With the help of Mario and Luigi, Super Plumbers of Brooklyn, Prince Donkey Kong, Sir Toad the Brave, and the Kong Army, we have defeated Bowser and captured him! We're currently seeking allies to partner with in order to form a coalition of free nations to partner up against any invaders from the Dark Lands, or wherever else there's bad people! I repeat, we're trying to form a coalition with other nations and lands! Please respond!"

"Whoa, WHAT?!" Daisy exclaimed, then scrambled to try and remember how the machine worked.
