"It's too early to leave," Ruby whined, her arms wrapped around her lover's bare waist as she sat up on their inflatable mattress. "I miss you alreadyyyy."
"I miss you too, babe, but rent won't get paid if I don't get to work." Yang couldn't help but smile at her little sister's antics. They had only managed to spend a few nights together prior to moving into the same apartment but Yang already knew Ruby wasn't much of a morning person… And she really loves cuddles.
"Rent is bad. They should let us live here for free because you're so beautiful!" Ruby huffed, rubbing her face against Yang's back. She could feel her girlfriend's long locks of blonde hair tickling her face and neck but she didn't mind, actually it made her want Yang to stay even more.
Though Ruby couldn't see it, the complement made the mechanic blush, her cheeks glowing warm as she ever so slightly leaned back against her lover. For just a moment, she looked around her, letting the reality once again sink in. Around here were a collection of things from their separate lives but on that little inflatable mattress was the start of their life together. She could feel Ruby's skin against her naked body, she could feel those arms holding her as tight as they could, which wasn't much but it was still endearing.
"Babe, if I could I'd spend all day in bed holding you. You're so warm, like a little furnace and you're softer than anything I've ever felt. I actually feel kinda bad… I know my hands are pretty rough from my job." Yang leaned forward, looking at her fingers where there was still a small amount of black grease from her work on various engines and transmissions.
"I love your hands," Ruby sat up, pressing her chest against Yang's back as she reached around and enveloped Yang's hands in her own. "I feel so safe in your hands. It's like nothing else I've ever experienced. When you hold me, I feel how strong you are, how much you love me… I feel like nothing in the world can hurt me."
Yang, without thinking, began to squeeze Ruby's hands firmly, feeling them nestle so perfectly in her own. It's like we were made for each other. I wish I really could protect her from anything, she deserves it. Her smile is like nothing else in the world. Still, the path we're going down, I don't know if I can protect her from the consequences. I don't want to lose her… I don't want her hurt either.
The young couple held each other tight, feeling the warmth of each other's bodies and the gentle beats of their hearts falling into a steady synchronicity. Yang was usually up and ready to go in the mornings but now, feeling the gentle tug of her lover ushering her back to bed, she felt a lull of contentment weigh down on her eyelids.
It took everything Yang had to pull herself up, letting Ruby's body slide off her hers and her hands softly released from her own. She heard the inflatable bed deform as Ruby slumped down on it and her rolled herself around until she was engulfed by blankets and pillows. In that moment, Yang wished nothing more than to be one of those blankets.
"You're so mean," Ruby grumbled, still sounding half asleep. "Cuddling is better than work. Dad owns the place and you did just move, he'll understand if you're a minute late… or an hour… or five."
"If I let you have it your way I'd miss a full day of work." Yang rolled her eyes as she pulled up her underwear off the floor and got herself ready.
"You say that like it's a bad thing." Ruby huffed.
"I don't think it is but I bet our landlord would." Yang deadpanned, pulling up her pants and slipping on her work shirt she had the forethought to throw on the floor not far from the door.
"Aren't you even going to shower?" Ruby peaked out from under the covers, her big silver eyes blinking as they adjusted to the light.
"Nah, it's already late and I don't really have the time," Her voice shifted almost jarringly to a soft and sensual hum. "Besides, I don't mind one bit having your scent all over me for the day, Rose. It'll help when I'm missing you."
"Aaaw, that's so sweet," Ruby blushed, sitting up while holding the blankets around her body to fight off the cooler air around her. "You keep talking like that I don't think I'll be able to let you leave without getting a little more of my scent on you."
"How about just a kiss for now?" Yang walked over to her little sister and knelt down until she was almost head height to her.
"You drive a hard bargain, Sis." Ruby smirked before her hands shot out from the covers, throwing the blankets off her as she lunged up and pulled Yang close with surprising strength. It didn't matter to Ruby that the air was cold around her bare skin, the moment their lips touched it was more than enough to burn away anything but warmth.
Yang's eyes fluttered closed as she was pulled into the intense and passionate kiss. Her body reacted, sending waves of warm bliss through her nerves. Ruby's lips, like the rest of her body, was so damn soft. Yang pressed in just a little harder until she felt Ruby's tongue enter her mouth. The warm tingling suddenly felt like an inferno as the two passionately made out, the elder sister almost completely giving in to her little sister's tactics… but bills come first, sadly.
"Ruby, you're devious," Yang sat up, panting for breath, seeing the playful and pleased look on her lover's face. "Almost had me there."
"I'll be missing you all day, I wanted to make sure you left with something to miss too." She winked and gave a look that almost had Yang right back in bed with her.
"You're too good, babe, but I miss you whenever I have to leave you." With that, Yang recomposed herself and headed for the door. "Try to clean up around here while I'm gone. Love you!"
"I love you, Yang! Drive safe!"
"Will do!"
And just like that, the door shut, leaving Ruby alone again, just her and the blankets. At least there's leftover pizza.
I miss her already. I never had a problem going to work before but now… Yang sighed as she removed the final bolt to the differential cover to a 96 f150. This particular job didn't require any actual effort, the components were similar enough to her 91 f250 that she didn't need to think too hard while taking it apart.
Damn, it looks like a sparkly chocolate milkshake in here. People really need to learn to change their fluids on time. The diff will probably start giving out and then they'll blame me but I doubt they want to hear the money they'll have to shell out for a new one. She sighed, looking at the badly worn gears.
She slid out from under the truck and wiped the grease and water mixture from her hands. The shop was relatively quiet, well, as quiet as a mechanic's shop should be. Her coworkers busied themselves with other vehicles, all makes and models from the old workhorse she was under to a modern hybrid electric hatchback.
I really do love my work. I can't imagine myself doing anything else for a living. I like helping Dad out too. I guess if I were to work anywhere else, I'd love to do my own thing, fixing up OBS Ford trucks and selling them, I hate to see them wasting away in junkyards, I know I wouldn't let that happen to Dessie, she's been my girl since I was sixteen. It'd be nice to have my own little business now that I think of it. Maybe Ruby could help?
Lost in thought, Yang made her way to the office in the back of the shop. It was a hot day and the bay doors were wide open to provide some breeze. However, as soon as she opened the office door, she felt a wave of cold from the AC wash over her. It provided her only a small blip of annoyance that her and the guys were sweating their balls (or lack thereof) off while the boss man was nice and cool. Still, it only lasted a moment before she shrugged it off.
"Hey Dad." Yang walked into the office, it wasn't neatly arranged and it was cramped, barely enough room for a desk and people inside. I guess I'd rather be out there sweating than in here all day, a little AC isn't much of a condolence when you can barely move around.
"Hey there, Sunshine," He sounded tired, he looked tired. Taiyang rubbed his neck, sore as it was from hunching over paperwork all day, seeing his daughter was a welcome reprieve. "What's up?"
"Diff is fucked, gears are practically flat. We'll have to order the parts, and it looks like water got in it at some point, we'll need to redo the diff seal but the cover itself looks like it's fine." She wiped sweat from her brow with her forearm as the room became too cold for her body that had adjusted to the heat outside.
"Alright, I'll let the customer know." He gave a weak smile to his daughter.
"Cool." Yang nodded, feeling the conversation already becoming awkward. It's been hard to talk to him ever since… well, ever since I found out Ruby and I are actually sisters. Even putting the incest aside, it's hard for me to look at him the same knowing he just abandoned Ruby like that.
"So, how are you settling into your new place?" Tai gave his best attempt at sounding normal and happy but his emotional exhaustion bled through.
"It's nice. We're still unpacking everything, but it's comfortable there. The kitchen is nice and Ruby says she's a decent cook so that's convenient." Yang leaned against the wall, feeling tension in her chest.
"I know you're really excited about having a sister but… is it true she doesn't have a job?" Tai's brow furrowed and his hands clasped under his chin.
"Yeah, what about it?" She immediately knew where this was going. And I don't like it.
"That means you're the only person paying rent right?" He prodded, sensing his daughter's growing unease.
"Yeah." She said bluntly.
"I just don't want you getting taken advantage of. We're not rich but we do alright and Summer never really excelled at anything in her career and from what I gather, her and Ruby never really had much." He already knew how he sounded saying that and it became instantly apparent by Yang's expression that she did too.
"Dad, I love you but you don't know Ruby at all," Yang's voice turned into a low growl as she glared at her father, feeling immediately protective of her little sister. "I don't care if I'm the only one paying for rent, some things are more important than money and my relationship with Ruby is one of those things."
"I'm just trying to protect you." His voice was weak and tepid, there was no strength behind his words.
'How could there be?' Yang thought to herself as her body relaxed. Mom's been on a business trip for two months since our families reunited. She has every right to be mad at him but I miss her. Now I've left to be with Ruby, he must feel like everyone is abandoning him. Still, he abandoned Ruby and Summer, Ruby told me how they struggled with money growing up. He could have helped them, he could have at least paid child support even though Ruby told me Summer didn't want him to. Well, I'll make up for it, I'm going to make good money and I'm going to spoil my girlfriend in every way I can. She's the sweetest person in the world and she deserves it.
"I know you are," After a long span of silence, that was the first thing Yang managed to say. "But I don't need protection from my own little sister. She's a good person dad, you don't need to worry."
"How can I not worry? I'm your dad, it's my job." He tried to give a weak smile but Yang didn't return the gesture.
"You seem to be forgetting that you're Ruby's dad too. Maybe think about that because she's the one person who needed you to worry about them the most." Spitting hot venom, Yang felt the bitterness of her words and saw the shock in her dad's eyes.
"I did what I thought was best… for everyone." He looked so utterly defeated, not even a thought of reprisal entered his heart against his daughter's vicious but accurate verbal lashing.
"I'm getting back to work." With an embittered huff, Yang turned for the exit to the office.
As she opened the door and felt the hot air saturated with the smell of oil, gasoline and diesel, Yang hesitated. She didn't look back but she listened, hoping her dad would say something, would do something that restore just a little bit of faith in the man that raised her. Long moments passed before her shoulders slumped and she left Tai alone with his regret.
If dad had been a good father to Ruby, I could have a normal relationship with my little sister… but I don't care. It doesn't matter, I love her the way I do now and it's too late to go back and change things. Ruby is my girlfriend and I'll protect her. I never could have imagined things ending up like this the day we met. It all just fell into place, it's like we were meant to be together the way we are.
Hell yeah, only been in town for a week and I'm already meeting a cute girl. I really haven't lost my edge. She seems sweet too, a little dorky but I kinda like that. Yang grinned as she slipped on her casual clothes; well fitting denim overalls that cut off mid way down her muscular thighs on top of a white blouse.
Damn, even when I'm not trying I'm a whole ass knockout. She posed in front of her mirror, flexed her muscles and gave herself a wink before turning away.
Yang's room was clean as she didn't spend much time there. The floors were clutter free, her bed was immaculately made and all her clothes were hung up in her closet or folded in her drawers. There was a shelf full of trophies and certificates and accolades from her life, many of them first place for various extracurricular activities. The walls were painted a pastel yellow and had only a few posters of attractive women and old cars to decorate them.
She grabbed her keys off the nightstand, spinning them around her finger before shoving them into her pocket.
Popping out of her room she entered the rest of the home. It was a nice house of a comfortable upper middle class family. Her room was on the second floor and adjacent to a nice large bathroom.
Following the hallway she came to a wide staircase that led her to the second floor. Every time she wandered the house she couldn't help but think… This is a lot of space for just three people.
Finally, at the bottom of the steps was the large living room with a fireplace and a big comfy couch at the center where her parents were watching television together. They were comfortably relaxed and leaning on one another, Tai's arm holding Raven close.
"Mom, Dad, I'm headed out. Might not be back for a while." She grinned.
"Just be safe," Tai rolled his eyes at his daughter. She was popular with women, no matter where they moved she always seemed to have a girl on her arm. "Don't do anything crazy and call us if a situation becomes uncomfortable alright?"
"Will do, Dad." The daughter gave a firm thumbs up.
"And treat her well, I know you're used to getting with every girl you have your eye on but not everyone is as… experienced as you." Raven took some small delight in watching her daughter cringe at the implication brought up by her own mother.
"And that's why I never bring my dates home, you'd just scare them off, Mom," Yang shook her head and turned for the front door. "Love y'all!"
With that, Yang made a beeline for her truck. Dessie was an imposing 1991 Ford F-250 hand painted army green and was Yang's pride and joy. Yang had been driving the beast since she was sixteen and was probably the longest term relationship she had outside of her parents. That's what happens when you move around a lot. Dad managed to run the auto shop even while mom dragged us all around the country but you've been one one constant since I was a teenager. I might not be the settling down type, but at least I'll always have you, Dessie.
She hopped into the front seat and got herself comfortable, the springs in the old chairs creaking under her weight. The fabric was worn and tattered and let out dust when she moved but she didn't mind, they might not have been the original seats but they were still plenty old and had a lot of stories to them.
The diesel engine rocked and groaned, the starter cranking the engine and in a furious burst of sound it roared to life! The International 7.3 IDI, her favorite engine, was a powerful and reliable beast. Just about part on and in the truck had been worked on but the thirty plus year old engine was still going as strong as the day she came out of the factory. She was by no means fast and had no turbo but Yang was happy with that.
She pressed down on the clutch and put the truck in gear, letting her roll back from her parking spot. Yang expertly moved the stick into first and the truck began to lurch forward and just like that, she was on the road. They lived in a nice little suburb full of expensive but samey houses. She knew her neighbors didn't like the loud diesel starting up every morning, especially in the winter. That winter without glow-plugs was rough, even had to give the old girl some ether to start her. Poor baby, glad that didn't do any damage but it was kinda fun.
As she drove, the suburb gave way to city traffic and congested streets. Her long bed and lifted truck stood out amongst the smaller, more city appropriate vehicles, though hers was one of the oldest machines on the road that she could see. It filled her with a sense of pride, knowing hers was the coolest truck in the whole city.
Yang popped a cassette into the dash and turned the volume up, playing a song from the time period that her truck would have been fresh on the road. The AC belt was gone and she hadn't gotten around to replacing it yet but she didn't care. In the heat of late summer, Yang just cracked open the smoker's window, a small triangular window on a latch and it just blasted in the air over her.
Soon enough, the traffic began to thin as she reached her destination, the GPS on her phone alerting her to the final turn.
It was a cute little park with several benches, a playground and a field for various games. The engine quaked as she shut it down, giving one last burst of strenght before settling to rest.
Hopping out of her vehicle, Yang took a deep breath of the air. The smell of the city was unmistakable but her attention was on the diesel exhaust, the last traces of which dissipated on the wind. I'll never stop loving that smell.
With a smile, she opened her texts and started typing.
Yang- 'I'm here. Where you at?'
…
…
…
Ruby- 'I'm at the bench sitting down. Red hoodie.'
Yang looked up and scanned her surroundings and soon enough found a splash of crimson amidst the vibrant greens of the park. She looked small, even from far away, and not in a stature sense, even though she was short.
Yang stuffed her phone into her pocket and approached the girl. The closer she got the more she felt it. The girl just seemed to shrink in her surroundings, her shoulders were raised and her hood was up even though it was hot and sunny. A brief moment of doubt entered her mind. She doesn't seem like she wants to be here. Should I just go?
After a brief back and forth in her head, Yang pressed on until she was standing right behind the hooded figure.
"Hey there Ruby," She put on her best cheerful voice. "It's Yang from the internet! Great to finally see you in real life."
There was a brief silence, an interlude that stretched just a little too long. In the silence, Yang felt an odd feeling of comfort mixed with anxiety. Until finally, the girl began to turn around.
The first thing Yang noticed was those eyes. Wide, sparkling silver eyes that shined like liquid metal, catching the sun's light and reflecting. Her skin was pale, like it hadn't seen sun in a long time and her frame was small and thin. She looked a little tired, like she hadn't gotten enough sleep.
"Wow…" Ruby muttered, her lips slightly parted and her gaze fixed at the woman in front of her. "You're really pretty."
"Well, that's really straightforward of you." Yang was surprised to feel a hint of warmth spreading through her cheeks. She knew she was hot, she was downright stunning, but somehow, those eyes looking at her made her feel like she was a priceless work of art.
"Sorry!" The hooded girl blurted out, her face burning red. "I- I just meant… like, your picture didn't really prepare me for seeing you in person. I um- I'm Ruby. It's really nice to meet you."
"You really know how to flatter a woman, huh?" The mechanic tried to give her best casual smile but she felt a flutter of frenetic energy in her chest that made her normal smile feel just a bit awkward.
"My mouth moves faster than my brain sometimes," Ruby visibly cringed but she forced her eyes to meet Yang's. "But I never say things I don't mean."
"Actually, that's kinda refreshing. A lot of people are either too scared to say what they mean or say something just to get what they want." Yang smiled at the brightening of her date's eyes at her words.
"Well, don't give me too much credit… I am pretty scared, I don't go on a lot of dates so I might be kinda awkward." Ruby flinched, her eyes averting from her date's.
"I'm sure you'll relax soon. I don't bite, unless you're into that." She got no shortage of amusement seeing Ruby's cheeks burn as red as her namesake and her eyes widen and dart around looking for anything to fixate on besides the woman in front of her.
"W-we should head out. I um, I looked into it, that museum is pretty close to here," Ruby forced herself to shakily stand and walk around the bench until she was standing right in front of her date. Compared to Yang, Ruby was rather short and frail. Her hoodie was baggy and oversized and she was wearing baggy jeans to match, a far cry from the attractive outfit her new companion was wearing. "Do you still wanna go?"
"For sure. Wanna take your car or mine?" Yang was sure Ruby heard the large truck pull into the parking lot. However, she noticed that Ruby shrunk back at this question, almost receding into her hoodie.
"I don't have a car." She muttered so softly Yang could barely hear her.
"That's okay, we can take my truck." She brushed off the surprise she felt, she'd never known anyone their age not to have their own car. I bet it's a family car and she just doesn't have it today.
With a nod, Ruby followed Yang back to the massive olive-drab truck. The aesthetics of the vehicle gave it a military vibe, from the rugged exterior to the color to the powerful diesel engine. Everything about it felt like it was from a different time and place and by the dents, scratches and small spots of rust, it was clear the vehicle had seen many days.
Yang caught Ruby staring in awe and puzzlement at the huge vehicle and Yang could only imagine she was wondering how she was going to get into it with the height difference between herself and the truck. Ever the gentleman, Yang took the initiative to open up the passenger door for Ruby, the hinges squeaking as they cried out for lubrication that the owner had been putting off in favor of other repairs and maintenance.
Ruby paused, hesitating at the threshold as she looked up at the behemoth of a truck. She saw a single small step made of metal to help get her inside but it seemed precarious at best. Glancing over to the owner, she saw only a reassuring smile. After a quick reigned sigh, the young woman placed her foot on the step and felt it yield slightly to her meager weight. Still, she persisted and hoisted herself into the seat.
"How's it feel?" Yang grinned, amused by the effort it took her date just to get into the truck. She's cute.
"Actually… It's really comfy. I didn't expect that." Ruby bounced herself lightly on the seat, her fingers feeling the worn out fabric that was still somehow soft.
"Nice right? Put those seats in myself." She patted the side of the truck twice.
"You must have put a lot of time into this truck, I can tell you really love it." Ruby spoke without making eye contact, her fists bunched up around her hoodie.
"Yeah, this old girl is my life partner. I plan to keep her on the road until the day I die." With every word that left her lips dripping with fondness for her vehicle, Ruby couldn't help but smile, just a little.
"That's really cool." The anxiety riddled mess muttered.
"Thanks," Yang felt more than happy to have someone new to gush about her truck too but decided she'd probably had enough of that. "Let's head on out."
Yang hopped into the driver's side and inserted the key, giving it a turn and the engine sputtered and growled before going silent. Ruby watched with a curious expression as Yang slumped back in her seat and let out a long sigh.
"Air in the lines, this happens from time to time, just gotta bleed the injectors." With an apologetic smile Yang hopped back out of her truck.
"Is- is there anything I can do to help?" Ruby spoke softly but clearly though looked uncertain about what she was offering.
"Sure thing, why don't you come on out and I'll show you under my hood." Another wink and she again saw Ruby fluster at the innuendo.
The two got out and went in front of the truck and popped the hood. The engine bay radiated heat from the drive there and Ruby looked at every component as though it were an alien spaceship, unable to make heads or tails out of most of it.
"These are the injectors, they feed fuel to the engine. Go ahead and crack 'em open like this," Producing a wrench out of her pocket, Yang immediately loosened the injector. "That one right there and the one above it are the problem. I need to replace them, I just haven't gotten around to it."
"Are you sure you trust me to do this? I've never worked on a truck before." Ruby frowned, feeling her anxiety growing.
"You got this! I'll start the engine and get the pressure up. Once the air is out it'll just spit diesel and then you can close them up." With an enthusiastic thumbs up, Yand departed into the truck.
She waited, the hood blocking her view of her date. Poor girl, she offered to help and I got a bit excited but she looked really nervous when I left her there. Maybe that was too much.
After a moment of deliberation, Yang shook her head and turned the key and the engine once more began to crank. She waited, knowing about how long it takes to bleed her injectors. She couldn't know if Ruby was doing as Yang had instructed and she began to worry. I hope diesel doesn't spill everywhere… she'll be able to close it, I told her she has this, it'd be unfair of me to doubt her now when I put her up to it.
Suddenly, the engine roared and shook and combustion was sustained. Moments later, a small woman popped her head up to the window.
"I- I think I did it!" She looked an even mix of proud and anxious.
"Yeah! She sounds perfect. Hop on in and we'll head out. Oh, and close the hood if you don't mind." A strange glimmer of pride sparked in her chest, seeing Ruby's happiness and excitement at her achievement.
As the metal hood slammed closed and her date got into the passenger seat, Yang watched Ruby from the corner of her eye. Everything her date did was unsure and unsteady, even buckling her seatbelt was a bit awkward as she fiddled with the belt until it was comfortable. Her frame seemed to shrink back into her seat and she couldn't quite bring herself to raise her head up all the way, always partially looking down into her lap.
Yang slowly pulled out of the spot, first shifting into reverse, then into first gear, rolling along slowly until they neared the road. She moved the stick, putting her truck into second, then third. As traffic got dense she effortlessly shifted back down to second gear. It was second nature at this point, her attention divided between the road and her shifting. It wasn't until they reached a red light that she had a moment to glance to her side to see those big silver eyes staring with perplexed interest at the stick shift.
"Never seen a manual before?" Yang grinned, knowing full well that manual transmissions were so scarce these days.
"I haven't. What exactly does that do?" She tilted her head.
"Well, basically I'm changing gears in the transmission depending on how fast I want to go. When you drive you probably don't notice your transmission changing gears because it's an automatic, but with this old girl you gotta do it yourself." She puffed her chest, preening with pride as she spoke of her beloved zf5 transmission.
"Huh, so that controls how fast the truck goes?" Ruby looked equal parts curious and anxious.
"Sorta, it's more like, it's taking power to the engine and giving it to the wheels so I can drive, but there are multiple gears for multiple speeds. The zf5 is a five speed manual transmission. I actually installed it myself, swapped it out from my old e40d transmission which was an automatic." She gushed over every word, even as she started to drive again.
"That must have been really hard to learn." Ruby shifted uncomfortably in her seat.
"Nah, it's not that much different than driving an automatic and if anything it makes me feel closer to my truck, we really have to work together now. I guess when you drive you don't really think about that much, huh?" Yang shifted up and down with the flow of traffic as she spoke.
"I- I um… I don't know how to drive." Ruby's voice was barely audible over the loud diesel engine.
"Seriously? How do you even live without a car? I've been driving since I was fourteen, I can't imagine not being able to drive." She looked around the road in front of her. Even for a small city, there were a lot of cars, people going in and out of homes and businesses, commuting to and from work.
"I just… walk."
"Everywhere?"
"Mhm." Ruby nodded meekly.
"How far did you have to walk to get to the park today?"
"I left at 9am." The introverted girl pressed herself against the truck's door, getting as far from her discomfort as she could.
"Seriously!?" Yang balked, nearly grinding gears as she let up on the clutch. "You walked for two and a half hours just to meet up with me?"
"It's not that far…" Ruby muttered.
"Damn, if I had known that I would have offered to come pick you up, your feet must be sore as hell." She winced at the thought.
"Not really. Used to walk the entire city all the time. It used to be my favorite thing to do and I still like to go for long walks from time to time." She visibly relaxed, looking just the slightest bit pleased with herself, but also having a look of resignation in her dull eyes.
"You're impressive, I'll give you that. I love driving so next time I can just pick you up at your place if you want." The thought of walking a whole city was baffling to her, almost as baffling as someone not knowing how to drive.
"Thanks, I might take you up on that." Ruby visibly relaxed, getting a little more comfortable.
The drive after that was more comfortably quiet, with Yang popping in a cassette and Ruby occasionally asking the random question about the truck or about Yang herself. Ruby kept her GPS up on her phone, guiding them to their destination but for a moment, Yang felt so comfortable… I kinda don't care where we go. She's easy to talk to and she doesn't seem to mind when I go off about my truck. It's cool, I don't usually feel a quick connection to people but even if she's a little shy, it's like I can just be me. Besides, that shyness is kinda cute, makes it more special when she gets excited about something.
"And we're here." Ruby tapped her phone, killing the app as they pulled into a dealership lot.
"Oh wow, you weren't kidding, a dealership really has a museum. That's wild." Yang put her truck into park and closed her window.
"Honestly, I've always been kinda curious about it but never really had much of a reason to go in since I don't know anything about old cars and stuff. I'm actually glad you're into it so I have an excuse." Ruby's cheeks glowed a faint red blush. Nervously, she pulled down on the hem of her hood with her thumb and the middle joint of her index finger, covering her face just a little bit more but the gesture couldn't hide her little smile.
How on earth is she so cute? Look at that face, damn… did I just discover that I have a type? Yang blinked, staring at her date for just a few moments too long before she saw that smile fade to an uneasy expression.
"L- let's go in. I wanna see what they've got. Do they charge admission or…"
"No, it's free." Ruby shook her head, seemingly thankful for the reprieve.
"Awesome. Let's uh, head in then." As the air filled with an awkward silence between them, Yang couldn't bring herself to look at the girl taking her on this date. She was far from inexperienced but for some reason, she felt a flutter in her chest she hadn't felt with anyone else. I think… I might want to see more of her. Let's just hope I don't make a fool of myself now that I'm getting nervous around her. Well played Ruby, I think you got me.
"Babe, I'm home." Yang sighed, stepping into her new apartment.
It was cleaner than she had left it in the morning. There were still a couple cans of beer and a snack wrapper by the inflatable mattress, but much of the mess was gone and the rest of the unpacking had been taken care of. There were even a few picture frames hung on the walls.
She's really trying to make this place feel like home for us. I love her so much. She smiled, kicking off her shoes.
"Yang, you're home!" A jubilant shout echoed through the home from the bedroom in the back and moments later, Ruby bolted out of the room, her socks losing traction on the smooth wood floors before she regained her balance.
"Whoa, careful there, you almost- mmm!" Before she could even finish her sentence, Ruby closed the distance between them and threw herself at Yang, almost knocking the older sister off balance before their lips met.
Ruby pressed her lips firmly against Yang's, her arms wrapped around her and her body balanced on her toes so her mouth could reach her taller girlfriend's. Yang's shock ebbed as the warm sensation of her lover's touch washed over every nerve in her body, burning away the exhaustion from her long and emotional day at work.
This is nice… this is right. No matter what anyone else says, I love Ruby and I'm happy with the way we are. I wouldn't give this up for anything.
