CHEREN
Why did he have to be so grumpy? If I had just graduated with the best scholarship in our region and as the top student with perfect marks from one of the best schools, I would be celebrating.
I shook my head. We were sitting in the shadow of some trees, taking cover from the scorching summer sun. It was midday. The wind blew gently through the leaves, and small sounds could be heard coming from deeper parts of the forest behind us. We were sitting on the cliff side, with the beach below. The waves gently swept back and forth, people could be seen running and playing. Some lied under beach umbrellas, others tanned. Pokemon and people swam together in the ocean.
I leaned a bit over and watched what he was doing. He'd gotten the same xtransceiver as me, but in a blue and black edition. Mine was just black. He opened a message.
.
"Hey Touya,
Congrats with the whole thing! So you finally beat your sis?
Can you tell her to check my texts, she's not replying and I
wanna haaaang. Nobody's home at the beach house. Bored."
.
I watched as he punched in a sour reply and threw the xtransceiver down next to him before lying down on his back. "What are you looking at, four eyes?"
Typical him. I rolled my eyes at the usual rude remark. "You finally got a message from your crush and she's inquiring about your sister? I can only feel sympathy with a friend in a situation like yours."
He snorted. I liked our little back and forth, but he'd been rather tame since graduation. Moments passed and none said anything. I hugged my legs and watched the waves.
"I didn't even get to battle her." I turned my gaze to him. He was lying with his eyes closed, his long eyelashes fluttered as he spoke. "The inspectors were shocked, they said it hadn't happened someone had forfeited after the bell had rung. If it had been before, I would just have been assigned another opponent." He rolled over and turned his back to me. I lifted my hand and quickly put it down again.
"Since the bell had rung, it meant it was a crushing defeat. They had to give me full points. Cheren, I only won by default. She knew what she was going. I didn't win a single thing. She did."
I was flabbergasted. The pieces had come together.
