ZOOTOPIA
(Parody of Chinatown)
TW: Contains graphic violence
Zootopia. The streets or sidewalks were either empty or full of various species, in different shapes and sizes, walking up and down the path. Nick slowly drove the station wagon down the street, Mulvihill sat in the seat behind him and Julian sat in the passenger seat. Soon, the fox approached the address he was given. He spotted the Packard parked on the curb, it was empty. Not far from its side, however, was Duffy and Walsh, standing side by side. The fox slowly parked on the curb across the street. The trio exited the car and walked toward the duo. Nick was grinning.
"You remember 'Nigh Train' Claude Mulvihill, don't you boys?" the fox asked as they got close to the wolf and the beaver.
But just as Nick was going to continue, Duffy and Walsh lifted their arms and showed the pawcuffs on their wrists. Soon, out of the darkness came Grim and Puss. Nick looked up in dismay.
"You're under arrest, Nick," Grim said.
Puss held up a pair of open pawcuffs and put one end to his wrist and the other to one of Nick's.
"Good news," the fox muttered.
The elder rabbit and the bear eyed the detectives with a concerned glance.
"Withholding evidence, extortion, and accessory after the fact," the wolf continued.
"I didn't extort nothing for nobody," Nick retorted and pointed to Julian behind him. "This is Julian Cross if you didn't know, Judy's father. He's the rabbit you're after, I can explain everything..."
"Lieutenant," the elder rabbit tried to speak over the fox.
"Give me five minutes," Nick tried to continue, "He's rich understand?"
"SHUT UP!" Grim retorted.
"He thinks he can get away with anything!" the fox pressed further.
"I'll lock you into the wheel of that car," the wolf threatened.
"Lieutenant," Julian repeated, "I am Julian Cross, I am rich, Judy Hopps is my..."
"He's crazy, Grim!" Nick yelled, "He killed Hopps because of the water thing!"
"Water?" the wolf questioned.
"Listen to me for five minutes," the fox pleaded.
"Lock him to the wheel of that car," Grim ordered.
Puss began to drag Nick away, but the fox tried to protest.
"GRIM!" he yelled, "GRIM! YOU'RE NOT LISTENING TO ME!"
The elder rabbit's attention slowly averted from the ordeal and turned to see his personal goal. Kathrine was being guided by Kyo and the maid toward the Packard.
"Kathrine, Kathrine!" Julian called out rushing to the bunny's side.
Kathrine looked up at the elder rabbit. Kyo and the maid held onto her in a defensive tone.
"I'm your- I'm your grandfather," Julian stuttered.
Suddenly, Judy rushed to the bunny's side and pushed her toward the car. She managed to get Kathrine in the passenger seat and then she turned to Curly, Kyo, and the maid.
"Go, go," she insisted, "We'll be fine, just go on, we'll meet you later."
Just as she got them to leave she heard the light honking of her Packard's horn. The rabbit turned to see the elder rabbit leaning beside the car talking to the bunny. She quickly hurried to the car and tried to shove Julian away.
"Get away from her," Judy heaved.
She hadn't pushed the elder rabbit far and the latter-mentioned rabbit was able to resist her struggle.
"Judy, please," Julian insisted in a sly voice, "Be reasonable." He turned toward the bunny in the car again. "Kathrine, come."
The elder rabbit outstretched his paw but the bunny edged away. Judy pushed Julian with almost all her strength away from the Packard.
"Get. Away. From Her!" she hissed.
Just as they were about to pass the rear of the car, the elder rabbit grabbed hold of the younger rabbit, despite his age. She gasped and looked into his eyes. Once again, fear filled her as she glared into the eyes of a being she hoped to never face again. Julian now wore a scowl as he muttered to his spouse.
"How much longer do I have?" he questioned her, in a devilish tone, "She's mine too."
"She's never going to know that," Judy retorted.
Using all her life force, she pushed the elder rabbit a few feet away and then pulled something out of her dress. A small chrome semi-automatic pawgun. She aimed it directly at Julian.
"Judy," the elder rabbit exclaimed, keeping his distance. "You're an arrogant rabbit who cannot provide."
All eyes turned to the drama at hand (Or paw). Even Puss, who was supposed to have cuffed Nick to the car's wheel, turned to look. Judy moved around the rear of the Packard and moved slowly toward the driver's side, not once diverting her aim from Julian.
"JUDY, SWEETHEART!" Nick called out, "PUT THAT GUN AWAY! LET THE POLICE HANDLE THIS!"
"HE OWNS THE POLICE!" the rabbit retorted.
While Judy had diverted her gaze just to speak to the fox, Julian had moved to the opposite side of the car and was moving slowly toward the passenger side. Judy kept her aim at the elder rabbit.
"Stay away!" She threatened, "Stay away!"
"You'll have to kill me," he retorted.
Julian began to open the passenger door as Judy stood beside the driver's door.
"STAY AW-!" she threatened once more but didn't finish.
Seeing how her father clearly made up his mind, pulled the trigger. The bullet hit Julian in the shoulder, causing the rabbit to stumble backward.
"Kathrine, close the door," the rabbit ordered.
The bunny did as told and Judy hopped into the driver's seat and revved the engine. Finally, someone else intervened in the drama.
"HALT!" Grim ordered and unholstered his revolver.
The wolf aimed up into the sky and fired two warning shots. However, the Packard pulled off the curb and began to hurry down the street. Grim then lowered his gun and aimed properly at the car. But, Puss had blindly been walking closer to where the car had been parked, that Nick was close enough to take action. The fox, acting fast, threw himself onto Grim and diverted the wolf's aim. However, he did not account for the cat he was cuffed to. Puss had been dragged with Nick but caught himself from falling by taking a proper stance. The cat was quick to his paws and unholstered his own revolver and took proper aim Puss then fired off three shots that echoed into the night. The Packard seemed to not be stopping.
Yes, Yes, Nick hoped, Keep going!
But soon, a new noise filled the air. The sound of a car horn growing fainter and fainter, until finally meeting a very distant pitch. When the honking found its pitch was when the Packard had finally rolled to a halt. Everyone was on his paws, but not an animal made a step toward the car, which was a good yard or so away. Suddenly, a blood-curdling screech cut into the air. Nick, dragging Puss behind him, hurried toward the car. Grim, Walsh, Duffy, and Julian (With the help of Mulvihill) followed suit.
By the time the fox had got to the car, he saw that the owner of the voice was Kathrine who wept bitterly. Nick turned his attention to the driver's seat. Blood ran down the cushions and the front windshield was a bit shattered.
No, please don't be, the fox hoped.
Nick slowly opened the door with his paw. Judy slumped off the steering wheel and the honking stopped. Her body was face up, looking toward the starry night. She looked as if she wasn't hurt at all. Except for the gouging wound where her left eye should've been. Grim replaced his revolver and turned to Puss.
"Alright, clear the area," the wolf ordered and looked at the fox, "Cut them loose, cut them all loose."
Nick didn't notice the cat releasing him, he only looked in distraught at the still corpse of Judy Hopps.
"Oh Lord," an elder voice said from the opposite side.
Nick looked up to see Julian looking over Kathrine's shoulder and at the corpse.
"Oh, Lord!" the elder rabbit repeated.
Julian then turned to the weeping figure of Kathrine and threw his paws around her. The bunny then began to cry out in protest as both the bear and elder rabbit carried her away. Nick only watched. There was nothing he could do. He just stared at the Packard as Grim placed Judy's corpse into a proper position. Memories filled his mind and anger, regret, and sorrow drowned his heart all at once, He had once had something similar like this happen to him before. All too similar. Zootopia, Grim, and... her. Then a sentence filled his head, it was the very information that he had been told when he once worked here, in Zootopia. Very softly, Nick muttered the words, his voice low enough to not be very knowledgeable.
"As little as possible."
"What was that?" Grim asked, turning to the fox, "What did you say?"
Nick didn't reply he just kept a scowl on his face. The wolf sighed and turned to the fox's two counterparts.
"You wanna do your partner a real favor?" Grim asked, "Take him home."
Duffy and Walsh only stood still and looked at their friend worriedly.
"Take him home!" the wolf repeated a little louder now, "Just get him the hell outta here!"
The duo finally moved.
"Come on, Nick," Duffy said taking Nick by one arm as Walsh took the other.
"Go home, Nick," Grim said threateningly, "I'm doin' you a big favor."
Nick finally looked the wolf dead in the eyes. He then let his partners guide him away. As the wolf and beaver started to turn around, Nick shot one last glance back toward the car as if by some miraculous action, the rabbit would've been alright. Walsh noticing this spoke to his friend.
"Forget it, Nick, It's Zootopia," the beaver exclaimed.
Nick sighed and turned back around. The trio pushed their way out of the crowd of wild anthro animals that had formed around the area to get a look at what happened. Nick was oblivious to what happened around him. The three just strolled down the street and into the darkness, unaware of what was to come. The medical units passed by them, but Nick seemed not to notice them. After everything he had done, everything that had happened, he was back to the very place he was before.
THE END
Fun Facts (About the film this is based on):
Despite the film's title and attempts at historical purpose they had a huge historical inaccuracy. The film is set in 1937 but the Chinatown which is mostly referred to in the movie is fictional. In reality, in 1936 the original Chinatown was torn down for construction purposes and wasn't rebuilt until 1938.
Robert Thowe, the screenplay writer, originally gave the film a happier ending where Evelyn (Judy) would've gunned down her father and Kathrine would've gotten safely away. But Roman Polanski, the director, having had a dark view of reality, mainly due to his childhood, demanded a more tragic ending.
Roman Polanski actually played the goon who slit Jake's (Nick's) nose.
