The ghoul watched as the two people moved through the darkened streets. For a moment the ghoul wondered how they could find their way through the darkness; the ghoul's nature allowed it to find the way through such darkness, but it wasn't important. All the ghoul was concerned with was his hunger. It had been two days since he had last eaten and right now he was famished; he'd fasted to avoid the hunters looking for him, the commissioned ones who butchered his kind while seeing only the nastier members of his race, but right now his self-control was slipping, and he was now on the move. He had been scouring this part of the city, knowing its remoteness would mean the patrols of hunters and vigilantes who tore through his kind without any problems before he'd found this pair of women.
In a city as polluted as this one, the ghoul had still been able to pinpoint the perfect prey in this part of the city. He had deliberately looked for strangers walking the streets. Most of the residents here knew this part of the city wasn't well defended against the ghouls, so naturally, everyone's priority was to hide until it was safe. But these two women were not safe. They were vulnerable, and so he had tracked them down. The ghoul licked his lips even as he calmly leapt from building rooftop to rooftop. With each leap, he grew closer to the two women. They were rushing as fast as they could through the streets, where they were heading, the ghoul did not know and he didn't care.
It wouldn't matter. The ghoul leapt down towards the streets, and he raced towards the two women.
"We're nearly there," one of them was panting. The ghoul caught her scent. It was a rich, meaty scent, laced with alcohol, perfume, moisturising cream, and sweat. It was a heady mix. The other one smelt more or less the same, both of them had been in the town and they had paid for it. Well by morning, when their remains were found, they would not have time to regret it.
"I told you we should have left," the second one said, "but you kept saying there was still time."
"Yeah, as you've reminded me so many times before," the first one snapped, but the ghoul could hear the fear in their voices. They knew what being out for long periods meant. "I hate living in this part of the city, Keiko. We should have moved out long ago."
"I know, but we can't afford it."
"We could have saved up, gotten other jobs. That's it, first thing tomorrow morning, I'm going to look for another job. I can't live like this anymore."
The ghoul was right behind them. Their chat had given him the time to creep up behind them. He punched the two women through the chests, his fists tearing through their ribcages in a splatter of blood before he grabbed their hearts with enough momentum for his fists to pop out of their chests on the other side.
"After tonight, you won't be living anymore, and you won't have to worry about work. Not anymore," he told the two women who'd been in too much shock to even scream in their death throes.
The ghoul got to work on eating the remains. He started with their hearts first, tearing into them with a ferocious, animalistic fervour which made him tear the hearts to pieces before they were gone. The blood-soaked face was all that was left of the hearts, and he used his dirty fingers to collect as much of the blood as he could and drink it right off his fingers. The taste was exquisite.
"More," the ghoul moaned in gleeful bliss, "More."
The ghoul tore the bodies apart, ripping their dresses off before he ripped the holes in their chests wider, and he grabbed the lungs, the liver and the kidneys. He tasted the alcohol content in their blood. It had intoxicated them both, but now it was giving even him a bit of a buzz. The buzz made him tear into the bodies. As he ate more of their flesh, the women's blood mixed and formed a massive lake of blood. Once he had finished with the chests, the ghoul tore off one of the girl's arms and he used his teeth to tear off a chunk of meat. As he chewed he looked around, using his senses to probe deeper into the darkness. He could smell numerous ordinary, basic, boring, and banal human beings nearby, shielded by thick brick walls and likely armed to the teeth, in a part of the city where they didn't have much protection, so they'd had to look after themselves. They meant nothing to him. What worried him instead was the thought of being torn to bits by the vigilantes, and his other enemies. Seeing him here, they would just kill him without a qualm.
The ghoul got back to his feeding frenzy. He cracked open the women's heads to get to the brains. As he consumed their brain matter, the ghoul prepared the bodies for the next round of the feast. He had several favourite types of meats and he loved feasting on organs and muscles. As he continued to eat and get into his stride on the next woman, the ghoul froze when he heard voices and the sound of a car engine in the distance. There were few cars on the streets this time of night, so it caught his attention. The number of times he heard the slurs towards his kind, whispered though they were as it was well-known ghouls had superior senses and the almost furtive way they were moving despite lacking the necessary self-control to do it, told him they were vigilantes who were tired of the streets being overrun with ghouls.
The ghoul looked down at his kills regretfully. He had managed to consume a large portion of the meat from both bodies. There was still a fair bit left on both corpses, but he had still eaten more than enough to keep him fed for at least a day. The ghoul cursed his fellow ghouls, wishing they possessed enough self-control for him to conduct his hunts. After tonight, it would prove even harder for him to hunt.
With nothing else for it, the ghoul stood up and he quickly left before the car even reached him. By the time they arrived, he'd be long gone.
