Valerian found Malakai sitting alone by the fireplace, looking lost in thought.
"Hey," Valerian said, taking a seat next to him. "Are you okay?"
Malakai looked at him, his eyes dark and brooding. "I was a fool to trust her."
Valerian frowned. "What happened?"
"She was just using me to get to my book of dark magic," Malakai said bitterly.
Valerian shook his head. "I'm sorry, man. I should have warned you about her."
Malakai sighed heavily. "It's not your fault. I should have been more careful."
They sat in silence for a few moments before Valerian spoke again. "Do you want to talk about it?"
Malakai shrugged. "There's not much to say. I was foolish and got played."
Valerian put a hand on Malakai's shoulder. "You're not foolish, you're human. And sometimes we make mistakes. The important thing is to learn from them and move on."
Malakai nodded, looking grateful for Valerian's words. "Thanks, man. You always know how to make me feel better."
Valerian smiled. "That's what friends are for. Now, let's get out of here and grab some fresh air."
Valerian and Malakai had managed to sneak out of the meeting place without being detected. They found themselves outside, the chilly night air biting at their skin. They huddled together for warmth as they walked down a deserted cobblestone street, their breath visible in the air.
Valerian shivered and pulled his coat tighter around himself. "I can't believe that girl betrayed you like that," he said, shaking his head.
Malakai nodded, still feeling the sting of Seraphine's betrayal. "I should have known better," he muttered.
Valerian placed a comforting hand on Malakai's shoulder. "Don't be so hard on yourself. You couldn't have known she was going to steal from you."
Malakai sighed. "I just can't believe I fell for it. I thought there was something real between us."
Valerian gave him a sad smile. "I know, man. It's tough."
They walked in silence for a few moments, the only sound being their footsteps on the cobblestones. Finally, Valerian spoke up again.
"But at least we got some information from that meeting," he said, his voice low.
Malakai nodded, grateful for the change of subject. "Yeah, we did. I just wish we could have stayed longer and gathered more."
Valerian shrugged. "It was too risky. We did what we could."
Malakai sighed. "I just can't shake the feeling that we're not doing enough. The longer we wait, the more dangerous things become."
Valerian put his arm around Malakai's shoulders. "We'll figure it out, man. We always do."
They walked briskly through the chilly night air, their minds racing with thoughts of the new Dark Lord and his plans for the future. They knew they had to act fast if they were to stop him.
Once they were back at their rented apartment in London, they immediately began pouring over papers and documents, trying to piece together any information they could about the new Dark Lord and his followers. Valerian sat at the desk, flipping through a thick tome, while Malakai paced back and forth across the room, muttering to himself as he tried to make sense of the scattered notes and papers spread across the coffee table.
The apartment was located in the heart of London, in a bustling neighborhood filled with quaint shops and cafes. It was a cozy space, with warm wooden floors and cream-colored walls adorned with colorful paintings. The living room was furnished with a plush sofa and armchair, a wooden coffee table, and a bookshelf lined with various tomes on magic and wizardry. A large window allowed natural light to flood the space, offering a view of the bustling city below. On the coffee table, there were several scattered papers, maps, and books, and Valerian and Malakai sat hunched over them, deep in thought and conversation.
"I can't make heads or tails of this," Valerian muttered, flipping through a particularly dense tome.
Malakai sighed and rubbed his eyes. "I know. It's like trying to find a needle in a haystack."
Valerian leaned back in his chair and ran a hand through his hair. "We need a new approach. Maybe we could try to track down some of the other people who were at that meeting. They might have some information that could help us."
Malakai nodded thoughtfully. "That's not a bad idea. We could start with the Ministry's surveillance footage and see if we can identify anyone."
Valerian leaned forward, his eyes brightening with excitement. "Yes, that's it! We'll track down every single one of those bastards, and we'll make them pay for what they've done."
Malakai gave him a wry smile. "You sound like you're ready to start a war."
Valerian grinned. "Maybe I am. After all, we're fighting for a just cause."
Malakai nodded, his expression serious. "I know. But we have to be careful. We can't afford to make any mistakes. We're up against some very powerful people, and they won't hesitate to eliminate anyone who gets in their way."
Valerian's grin faded, replaced by a look of grim determination. "I understand. We'll be careful. But we have to do something. We can't just sit here and wait for them to make the next move."
Malakai nodded. "I know. And we will do something. We just have to be smart about it.
Valerian and Malakai spent several days pouring over papers and tracking leads in their rented apartment in London, but they hit a dead end. They needed more information, and the only place they could think of to get it was at the Ministry of Magic. So they gathered what little information they had and headed back to the Minister's office a few days later, hoping for a breakthrough in their investigation. As they walked through the crowded streets of London, they couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched. But they had to press on, for the sake of their mission and their own safety.
Valerian and Malakai sat across from the Minister's desk, their expressions tense as they explained the situation with the new Dark Lord and the missing book of dark magic.
The Minister listened carefully, his eyes narrowing in suspicion. "And why exactly were you at that gathering, Mr. Verducci?"
Valerian shifted uncomfortably in his chair. "We were investigating, Minister. Trying to gather information on the new Dark Lord."
The Minister raised an eyebrow. "And did you find anything?"
Malakai spoke up, his tone even. "We did, but unfortunately, we were betrayed before we could retrieve what we came for."
The Minister leaned back in his chair, his fingers steepled in front of him. "And now you want me to help you track down this new Dark Lord and retrieve your book."
Valerian nodded. "Yes, Minister. We know the danger he poses and we need to stop him before it's too late."
The Minister studied them for a moment before finally nodding. "Very well. I'll assign a team to work with you on this. But I warn you, Mr. Verducci, Mr. Riddle, if you're hiding anything from me, you'll be facing serious consequences."
Valerian and Malakai exchanged a quick look, their determination clear. "We understand, Minister," Valerian said firmly. "We just want to put a stop to this before it's too late."
