When I got the chance I would go to the moon pool but it was rare for me to be available on a full moon night.

Finally there was a night I was able to go. I had it all to myself, the girls were locked up tight at their own houses and I could relax in the water.

As it bubbled and the full moon came to overlook the dormant volcano I sang the song of the moon.

It echoed in the chambers and I closed my eyes as I felt a rush of air surround me.

I was plunged into cold water. Too like another time I had rescued my soulmate I looked around in the water to see a figure sinking, this time into the dark sea beneath them. I jetted toward them arriving to see an older version of my soulmate this time closer to my current age. I put an arm around him and brought him to the surface, his eyes fluttering open as we came up into the windy stormy sea air.

"Let's get you to safety, shall we?"

I looked around and saw a boat in the distance who was battling the storm as well. I was worried if I used my abilities now it might cause unforeseen consequences.

I looked around and beyond the swells in the sea I saw a seashore several miles out. I tucked my soulmate into the curl of my left arm. Using my powerful fluke, and utilizing the webbing between my fingers I was able to push us through the rolling sea waves. When one wave threatened to submerge us I tread water while raising my right hand, taking a deep breath I sang the song to calm storms. The wind whipped around me before I felt it quiet to a caress of my cheeks and the seas undulated no longer in large swells.

From there it was easier to get my soulmate to the shore and then collapse next to him.

"I love a good swim, but it would be wonderful to meet you in another setting for once."

Instead of his voice answering me in the old language a sweet feminine one spoke instead.

"Sildroher. I haven't seen one of your kind for many years. I thought we had all died out."

I turned my head to find a young woman who reminded me of my soulmate. Angular features, deep dark eyes and a bittersweet smile on her lips.

"I am from an ancient line who long left these waters."

The woman nodded, "The protectors. They've been gone before Ravka was Ravka, when all the land was one."

A cough came from my side, and I glanced at my soulmate. My eyes fixated as I watched him summon his shadows, feeling as my soulmarks flared to life on both my arms.

A relieved breath came from me.

I glanced back at the woman.

"What's your name?"

"Ulla."

"Ulla." I glanced at her long sleeves, a feeling deep in my gut. Perhaps I had got my grandmother's good senses. Ulla looked down at my arms that began to swirl with shadows as my soulmate summoned them from behind.

"He's yours then."

I nodded.

"He needs a protector. I'm glad its you."

Ulla knelt by me and placed my hand on her sleeve as if giving me permission to be curious. I lifted it to find equations. I gasped.

"Do you recognize these symbols?"

"They are from my world."

A gruff voice, rough from the salty air, spoke,

"How long...?"

I looked at my soulmate to see him staring at me and I didn't have to look to know I was already fading.

"Will you give me your name? I'm Darcy or Darya as my Babya would call me."

"Darya." The way his smooth and deep voice sounded out my name had a shiver running down my spine. The dark gray pools of his eyes made me wish I could dive into them and never return to the surface. "Until I see you again, Darya."

And then I was back in the moon pool. A new mission in my heart.

I would find Ulla's soulmate and I would bring them together. I didn't know her well, or at all, but there was a longingness that I was familiar with. Ulla seemed to be related to my soulmate somehow, and like I wanted to make him happy I hoped she could too.
