A call the next morning would find me meeting the girls at the new cafe (Harrison had bought the Juicenet) called Zane's .
"You look awful." Rikki said as soon as meeting me.
I didn't even want to think what I looked like, when I'd only finally drifted off to sleep in the wee morning. Thankfully I didn't have any classes on the Friday following the full moon.
Cleo reached out and placed a hand on my shoulder and I flinched.
Rikki and Cleo looked at each other's brows furrowed.
"I had a bad night."
"Oh we did too. The moon pool attacked us." Cleo spoke up.
I had taken a sip of coffee when I sputtered, "Wait what?"
"We have someone for you to meet." Cleo changed the subject.
I shook my head, "I don't think I'd be good company."
"Am I interrupting?"
I looked up to see a tan blonde with a slightly bashful look.
" Just the person we wanted to see." Cleo stood and gestured to the girl, "Bella meet Darcy, Darcy meet Bella."
I waved with one hand as I wiped down my lap with the other.
Lewis came over, "What did I miss?"
"Not much they were introducing me to Bella."
"We met Bella officially at the moon pool." Cleo said with a straight face, her brow with the slightest wrinkle.
"Oh I see." I smiled a wobbly smile, "Welcome to the club."
Bella gave a wobbly smile back, "If its what I think it is, I've been part of the club since I was 9."
I looked at her with wide eyes, "That's impressive and you've kept yourself safe this whole time."
Bella nodded, "It helped that my family was always moving."
I nodded and stood, "Let's go to Mako to talk more about this." I looked at Lewis, "Can I go with you? I don't feel well enough for the swim."
The girls looked at me worriedly while Lewis nodded.
"Sure, Darce."
As the girls swam over to Mako, Lewis and I took his small jetty.
"So what happened. You look devastated."
"That obvious?"
"You have dark circles around your eyes, no real smile and you haven't been mothering the girls. Something drastic must have happened."
I looked out over the sea.
"I…did something for my soulmate."
Lewis was patient with me.
"It felt necessary in the moment but…"
"It still didn't feel right?"
I nodded.
"This mysterious soulmate of yours what did they do in return?"
"I…don't know. I…left before I knew."
Lewis steered the boat for awhile before his voice came back over the sound of the motor.
"Someday I hope you'll trust me enough to tell me about them."
I looked up at him, "I've only told Rikki…we both have interesting soulmates."
"So a super secret club?"
I shrugged and looked back out to sea.
We were starting to near Mako now.
"Whatever you did Darcy I'm sure you did what you could to protect…it can't be that bad."
My eyes stung as tears threatened to spill.
I shook my head, "You don't know that."
"I do. Because I know you Darcy. You care so much about everybody. You would only do something drastic if you felt you had no choice and it was to save someone."
A tear fell down my cheek and my throat felt clogged as the boat ran onto the sandy beach of Mako.
Cleo who'd been waiting along with Rikki and Bella looked at my tear streaked face and turned to her soulmate.
"Did you make her cry?"
"It's ok Cleo, he was trying to comfort me."
"Oh ok."
Rikki eyed me, a determined look passing her features. I definitely would be cornered by her soon to spill my beans.
We all sat on the sand looking out to the ocean.
"So what exactly happened last night?" I glanced at Rikki and Cleo.
"There was this…" Rikki paused as if not sure how to phrase what she'd seen.
"Water tentacle?" Cleo spoke up.
"It grabbed Rikki. Only with Cleo and my powers were we able to free her." Bella chimed in.
"Where was it taking her?"
Rikki shivered, "It took me inside it and then it was rushing toward something. It was so weird."
"Not only that but when we went back to the moon pool there was this guy…" Cleo looked to me.
"His name is Will." Bella spoke up.
"Right, Will, and he was knocked out by something that came from the moon pool."
I wiggled my toes in the sand, "Weird."
Rikki nudged me with her elbow, "Could you check the journals and see if there is anything?"
I nodded. I let out a long sigh.
"I woke my roommate up with a scream, due to a nightmare. She's threatening to switch."
Bella glanced at me, "My parents got me a rental by the beach, you could share the rent if you like."
"You don't even know me."
Bella smiled, "I have a good sense about you."
