Holding On
Last time...
His smile fades, and he suddenly becomes serious, "You're going to do the right thing, I know you are, Jinx. I believe in you."
I roll my eyes, "Yeah, yeah. See you later," I say before walking away, but not without first catching him staring at my butt.
Stupid heroes
The next morning, I wake up to the sound of boys fighting over who gets to play on some new gadget Gizmo invented. Knowing I'll never get the chance to go back to sleep, I roll out of bed and walk over to my dresser to grab a loose pink off-shoulder shirt and black cotton shorts.
After getting dressed, I go into my bathroom, brush my teeth, and try to tame my hair that decided it wanted to curl while I was sleeping. Lucky me. I finally decide to just throw it in a loose ponytail before walking outside and making my way to the kitcken to grab a banana for breakfast.
"Jinx, tell Billy to give me one of the controllers! He's hogging all four of them!" Gizmo yells as I begin to peel the banana.
"Billy, pull yourself together. Gizmo, turn the damn game off," I start, looking around for the rest of my team, "where is everyone?"
"They left," Kid Flash calls from his cage in the corner, and I have to keep myself from jumping out of my skin. I'd already forgotten he was here. So much for hoping our conversation last night was just a cruel dream...
"Shut up, snot butt!" Gizmo hollers, throwing some mechanical device at KF's cage. When it hits, the entire cage brightens for a moment, and I hear a scream.
"What the fuck was that?" I hiss, throwing the banana on the counter and walking over to where Gizmo and Billy are.
"I only shocked him," Gizmo says with a shrug, "What? Are you afraid I hurt your boyfriend?"
"He's not my boyfriend!" I automatically shout without thinking, causing my teammates to look at me with matching shocked expressions and the hero to smile smugly, "I mean... I don't care what happens to him. All I'm worried about is that he'll be too damaged before we can figure out what to do with him."
Snapping out of it first, Gizmo puts in his two cents, "I think we should just ransom him off to the Titans. Atleast then, we're guaranteed some money. And maybe Jinx won't mess up this time."
"I did not mess up! I just got tired of Madame Rouge thinking she was better than me," I reply, crossing my arms tightly over my chest, "and, I couldn't stand the thought of her taking credit for something I did."
"Sureee, that's what happened," one of the Billies say, causing the other three to laugh as they continue playing their game.
"Anyway," I say, glaring at my teammates, "I don't think ransom is the best idea. The Titans would probably just come in here, kick our asses, and leave with the captive and us in handcuffs."
"Yeah, yeah. When you think of something better, lemme know," Gizmo replies, finally snatching a remote from one of the Billies.
"I thought I told you two to stop that!" I yell, but they're already too far gone for anything I say to get through to them. Due to that, I just sigh, pick up my banana, and return to my room.
When I get inside, I decide to make my bed and begin to think about what to do with Kid Flash.
Secret Identity? Nah, that'll just piss off him and his team.
Ransom? Nope, his team will just find a creative way to kick our butts and haul us to jail.
Turn him over? Hell no, not going to happen again.
I scowl, throwing a pillow at the opposite wall. None of my ideas are anything close to imaginative. And I'm really not the 'torture for information' type... of course, I could always try and get information some other way...
Maybe I could get him to tell me the Teen Titans' weaknesses? Just make him think he can trust me, and then before he realizes he's been blindsided... WHAM! I've taken out the rest of his team and the town is mine.
The corners of my lips slowly pull up until my expression looks like Cheshire's mask... only more cat-like. I walk over in a trance-like state to my pillow, picking it up and throwing it back on my bed.
I take out my HIVE communicator and flip it open before saying in a cool tone, "Jinx to the HIVE. I'm calling a meeting in ten minutes. If I don't see you there, you're going to be having an unlucky streak. Jinx out."
I quickly walk out of my room, Gizmo and Billy having turned off their game finally since I called the meeting. Once the three of us arrive inside the meeting room, I sit at the head of the table, and they both take their normal seats. Soon after, the rest of the team piles in, looking a bit too nervous for my liking.
"What aren't you guys telling me?" I ask, narrowing my eyes at them.
"The Brotherhood is sending Madame Rouge to look for Kid Flash. They found out he's been captured. She's coming for him again, but this time she's coming for you too," Seemore announces.
My eye barely twitches before I slam my fist down on the table, unable to control my rage as my eyes glow pink and a hex flies across the room into the opposite wall, "That bitch isn't getting anywhere near me. She thinks I was pissed before, she has no idea what she's walking into this time!"
"Whoa, calm down Jinx!" Billy yells from his position under the table.
"Yeah, you ruined my sandwich," Mammoth agrees, holding up a sliced bun and pointing at the condiments all over the floor.
I tighten my fists to the point of drawing blood, "Until further notice, we are on constant alert. I want to know the second Madame Rouge touches down on American soil. Forget the plan concerning Kid Flash at the moment, this is way more important. None of you are to go out alone at any time. Do you understand?"
My teammates shake their head in the affirmative before I continue, "Good. Gizmo, get down to the lab right now and start searching for anything connecting the Brotherhood to an aircraft headed this way. Seemore, keep an eye on the cameras. She may already be here for all we know. Kid Wikkid, help Seemore. Mammoth, go with Gizmo and do whatever he asks. Billy, multiply to enough of you to surround the inside perimeter of the hideout. I'm going to activate the emergency control panel. Everyone understand their missions?"
"What are you going to do with Kid Flash?" Seemore asks, blinking innocently.
"Kid Flash is going to pick a side," I answer vaguely. Before anyone can ask any more questions, I say in my most authoritative voice, "Get going! We do not want to be caught off guard!"
They all file out of the meeting room to their required posts while I hurry to the common room's main computer. When I reach it, Kid Flash is already standing with a determined look on his face. Ignoring it for the moment, I type in a few commands, let the scanners scan my eye and hand, and then the hideout is successfully on lockdown.
"Jinx, what's going on?" Kid Flash asks, his eyebrows furrowing underneath his mask.
I turn around slowly, "Madame Rouge is on her way. This time... let's just say she's not only after you this time."
His expression hardens, and I can tell that if he wasn't held back by the bars, he would be walking toward me by now, "You're sure?"
I nod, "Positive. I just put the hideout on lockdown, and gave my team busywork. But we both know a few silly precautions aren't going to hold her back. She's coming for us, and my team is going to be caught in the crossfire."
He looks at me the same way he did that first day we met in the museum, curious and a little bit infatuated, "Well then, we need to get out of here."
My head snaps back to him, and I can't help but think he's crazy. He's still completely willing to trust me, even though he's in a cage because of my doing. However, after another minute of thinking, I hate to admit it, but he's right. If I want my team to stay safe, I'm going to need to run. This time, Madame Rouge isn't only prepared to take a hero off my hands and leave. She's on full attack mode. And she isn't going to stop until Kid Flash and I are six feet under. She sure as hell isn't some rookie looking to impress her role model. She's out for blood, and she wants to get revenge on the two people who humiliated her to the Brotherhood.
I shake my head, "We do. Hang on," I answer, hurrying over to the dial and punching in the code. Once it accepts, I switch the dial to 'off' and pull the door open, "You had better not make me regret this."
He looks at me as if I'm some kind of angel, and takes the few steps it takes to be free of the cage, "You'd better pack a few of your things. There's no telling how long it's going to be before you can... come back," he chokes out the last part before picking me up and running to my room. When he sets me down, the entire room is spinning, and I have to hold onto him for balance.
"Don't. Ever. Do. That. Again," I struggle to say in my most resolvable voice, but it comes out more airy than intended. He just chuckles as he runs over to my closet and picks out my duffle bag.
It takes a few more moments for me to get my footing back, and then I'm rushing around my room to grab everything I think I might need as we're gone. I finally shove my feet into some chucks before picking up the bag and throwing it over my shoulder, "Can you take a passenger through the wall with that molecule vibrating thing?"
He looks up from his place near my desk at the question, "Yeah..." he begins, but then frowns, "...you don't want to say goodbye to your team?"
"I don't want them to know where I went. Knowing them, they'd try to help and get themselves killed in the process," I answer, trying to make light of the situation, but not quite achieving the correct tone of voice for it.
He stares at me for a long moment before nodding, "Okay, hold on."
So I do what any girl would do in this situation. I hold on and hope my luck is changing.
Whew! So there's chapter 3! I hope things aren't moving too fast... but I could only slow it down so much when one of my main characters is the fastest boy alive! Anyway, don't forget to review!
