Sorry if the story segments seem to run-on, I can't get any kind of divider to show. In chapter 7, where it says "She was thinking and naming..." and is supposed to be of.
"You wretched little...!" Ghigno swung his arm at Stefania, who ducked and punched him in the gut. The guard doubled over, trying to bring his fist down on her unprotected head or neck. Other guards and prisoners soon approached, separating the two.
"What did she do this time?" BirdBrain asked, annoyed.
"He tried to kiss me!" Stefania declared, insulted, "so I slapped him across the mouth."
"Just you wait, Blank! You'll be sorry you ever messed with me!" Ghigno and the other guards retreated.
"You really are in trouble, Blank," Brooke said in a trembling voice. "Ghigno never lets anyone push him around."
"He'll try ta smother ya in ya sleep!" Blackout added.
"Not while I'm around!" Finny growled, holding Rodey in one arm. That night, Finny followed the girls into their tent, spreading a blanket on the ground between Stefania and Kitty's cots. As the all settled down, Rodey began to whimper, not being used to sleeping on the floor. Finny sat up and rocked the baby rat, singing the second verse of the song Kitty had once heard him singing in South Africa.
Sweet sixteen today
She's looking like her Mama a little more everyday
One part woman, the other part girl
To perfume and makeup, from ribbons and curls
Trying her wings out in a great big world
But I remember
Butterfly kisses after bedtime prayer
Sticking little white flowers all up in her hair
"You know how much I love you Daddy, but if you don't mind
I'm only gonna kiss you on the cheek this time"
Oh, with all that I've done wrong, I must've done something right
To deserve her love every morning and butterfly kisses at night
Snoring signaled that the lullaby had worked, and not just on the baby. Kitty smiled as she watched her friend gently lower himself to the floor, placing Rodentia close to his face.
Kitty had no idea what time it was, but some sound had woken her, and her instincts told her there was a threat nearby. Seeing Finny slightly risen from the ground with the hair on the back of his neck bristling confirmed this. Without moving, she tried to see who was in the tent, but could not. Finny slowly rose on his hands and knees, using his tail to slide the baby under Kitty's hammock. A figure was walking down the row of cots, shining a very small flashlight at the women's heads. The light was just small enough to allow the intruder to tell who each girl was without waking her up. He almost walked right on top of Finny; the rat jumped the trespasser silently. Kitty and the other nearby girls sat up and watched. The two men seemed not to realize they had already woken the women; they fought silently. Finally Finny knocked the intruder to the ground, knocking him unconscious. The rat dragged the other guy outside before coming back to his blanket. Kitty had taken Rodey out from underneath her, and was cradling her when Finny returned. Everyone said goodnight and laid down again, but it was a while before they could fall back to sleep.
The next day, no one saw Ghigno, but outside the girls' tent were marks. Some were small and looked as though something had tunneled beneath the sand. A larger mark looked as though something big had been dragged away.
"It must a been the Mongolian deathworms!" whispered Finny to Snaptrap when they took a water break that morning. Everyone was frightened by the marks and Ghigno's disappearance. Little Rodey cooed as she reached for her adoptive father's canteen.
"We gotta get outta here, Fin!" whined Snaptrap. "Not only are we in danger, but Phil could be having the baby any time now!"
"Yeah," Finny held his canteen to Rodey's lips. "You remember where you found that gold thing? I been thinkin', since it had that SS on it, maybe it was somethin' belongin' ta that Smoochin' Safi, and we out here diggin' for a treasure she buried."
Snaptrap nodded, it made sense to him, "I think I can remember, or I could if all these holes didn't look the same!"
"Listen up, everybody!" Finny called out. The other prisoners stopped digging and wandered over. "Tonight me n' Vermy gonn' look for the place he found that gold thingy, and in the mornin' we all gotta bust outta here! Y'all get whatever ya can use ta fight the guards, an' we'll take their trucks an' drive back ta civilasation!"
"Why d-d-don't I just look for a way to contact T.U.F.F. to come find us?" piped up Keswick, "They can bring h-h-helicoptors to take us all h-h-home!"
"Finny, the guards have guns and took away all of our weapons!" added Kitty.
"She's right, what are we supposed to use for weapons?" finished Ollie.
"Break the tv screen in the rec room and use the broken glass like knives," instructed Josie.
"I can break into locker they keep shovels!" added Lucia.
"And there's plenty a rocks around, and other things we c'n throw!" concluded Blackout.
They finalized the plans while they were all still out in the open, where the guards could not eavesdrop.
