Chapter 18: Justice is served

Previously:

The word guilty continued to ring in my ears.

Present:

"But," the judge continues, "It is clear to me that the facts displayed here today do not prove her guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. The verdict is overruled and Ms. Astaire is free to go."

Now, instead of the haughtiness James Dunnigan once possessed, rests a state of disbelief. I was oblivious to the thunderous cheers from the newsboys and the soliloquized grumbles escaping from unhappy citizens in the court room. No, I was much too busy squeezing the life out of Estella to notice that.

"And as for you," The judge addresses Mr. Dunnigan, "you are hereby arrested by the New York City court of law for the abduction and containment of an adolescent."

"Who may I ask did he abduct?" Moriarty defends, jumping from his chair as his client stood there with his mouth gaping open.

"Why, the young lad Cryptic here. Not only did Cryptic confess this in his testimony, but only moments ago was I informed by police that two of your henchmen have admitted to the kidnapping of the boy as well," The judge declared with a nod towards the back of the room. Shifting my eyes in that direction, I observed two sheepish Delancey brothers in handcuffs.

"HEY Oscar! Morris!" Race taunts, "Now that ya in jail maybe you'll learn to pick on someone ya own size." He pauses, "I hope ya like losin'!"

The judge only chuckled and banged his gavel. "Court dismissed," he orders. Mr. Dunnigan as well as the Delancey brothers are escorted out of the room by security.

Finally getting my heart rate to slow down, I made my way past the barrier that separates the attendees form myself. I immediately walk over to the boys and was swept into a bone-crushing hug from Mush.

"You're back." Jack stated. I gave him a pointed look, thinking no dip, Sherlock. "Lem'me finish. You're back, faoh good now." I couldn't help the Cheshire grin that escapes from my lips.
