Chapter 2-Frienemy

(Jacob's POV)

Carlisle and Edward darted out of the room and the British Vampire stared at EJ.
"Why did you suddenly decide you were too good for the Volturi?" Nessie demanded, "Not that I object."
I stared at the British Vampire and Bella snarled,
"Jacob, get EJ away from them."I sighed and Nessie attempted to take EJ out of my arms but he snapped at her. He shook his head and Edward called from outside the room,
"He wants to stay with Jacob, Bella. The Ex-Volturi won't hurt him." I turned away from the new-comers and followed the sound of Edward's voice. I found him talking rapidly to someone on his cellphone and Carlisle was on the opposite side of the room talking as fast on the land-line. Both of them sounded worried.
"Uncle Jake, who are those people?" EJ asked, twisting in my arms to look up at my face. I looked down at him and replied, feeling a strange sense of déjà vu come over me,
"Two of them, the two short ones, were bad people. They came for your sister, Renesmee, when she was just a baby. They drank human blood then but they seem to have changed their views. They drink animal blood now, you can tell that from the color of their eyes. If they're red they feed off humans. If they're gold they feed on animals, like your mom and her family."
I sighed and Edward turned to me. He held the cell out to me and muttered,
"Tanya wants to speak with you. Clarify that we need her urgently"
I took the phone and held it to my ear, holding EJ in just one arm.

"Tanya, what seems to be the problem?" I asked
"I cannot believe that Bella created an immortal child. She just wouldn't. Not after the stuff that Renesmee was accused of when she was a baby. And I could never believe that Jasper, of all Vampires, would create a newborn army. He loathed them" Tanya shrieked down the line
"Well I'm afraid to say that Bella has created an Immortal child. He's called EJ and he looks just like the way she imagined Nessie would look had she been a boy. And Jasper has created a Vampire army. He felt that the Cullen coven needed constant protection with Nessie in the household so he made them and got them to drink animal blood. We need your help Tanya but you need to be ready. Jane, Alec and two new Volturi Vampires are here and they're golden" I retorted.
Edward, stared at me and I couldn't help but feel self-conscious. I still hadn't gotten over the utter hatred and repulsion he'd had of me.
"Jacob, tell Edward... we'll be there in three days. We'll bring as many Vampires as we can along. Hang in there and start training" Tanya stated, then I heard the dial tone.
I handed the cell phone back to Edward and passed along Tanya's message. I, unconsciously, clutched EJ tighter in my arms.
"I never personally had anything against you Jake. You were trying to steal Bella. Can I hold my son?" Edward murmured, pocketing his cell phone. I looked down at EJ and the toddler leaned towards Edward.
"It seems to be becoming a pattern, Edward. That your children cause the Volturi to come" a chilling girlish voice called from the doorway.
I turned towards it and saw Jane stood just outside the door frame with a grin on her face. But somehow, with the missing red eyes, she didn't look menacing; she didn't even look scary. She looked just like a child, the way she would have looked before she was turned.
"Wolf boy, I know you and I haven't been formally introduced or gotten off to the best of starts but I want to make amends. I apologize for the Volturi for killing Irena and trying to decimate the Cullens. I also apologize for accusing Renesmee of being an immortal child, although it seems you were capable of such an act" she muttered, completely ignoring Edward and Carlisle.
"I cannot fathom my old leader's actions" She added then fell silent.
"Apology accepted, but why tell me. I'm not the Coven leader and I'm not even a Vampire. Shouldn't you be telling Carlisle or Edward?" I muttered and Edward laughed.
Jane glared at him and he gagged on his laughter, the sound coming out as a hysterical whimper.
"She's afraid of the Wolves, Jacob. She always has been. But it's stronger now that she is weaker" Edward muttered, "She cannot hate or project pain as strongly now she's a Vegetarian away from the Volturi." I looked between Jane and Edward then EJ leapt out of Edward's arms. He me stared at and sent me into the white room.

"Uncle Jacob, I'm hungry. Can you take me hunting? Just you on your own though" he said, lisping a little.
I nodded and responded, "Sure EJ. I'll take you hunting."
In a flash we were back into reality and EJ jumped into my arms.
"Edward I'm taking him hunting. He only wants me there so don't let Bella or Nessie come and find us" I stated then carried EJ out to the garden via the glass door at the back of the house. I set him down and he waited patiently for me whilst I phased into wolf form. I came out of the bushes and EJ toddled over to me at Vampire speed. He put his hand on my shoulder and I lowered myself to the ground for him. He climbed agilely onto my back and I bolted into the forest. He held on using his knees and clapped with excitement.
"This is amazing uncle Jake. As fast as a Vampire but without any effort on my part" he trilled.
I sprang forward until we crossed the scent of a mountain lion.
"Can I have it Jacob? Can I have the mountain lion?" EJ asked.
I nodded my head. I felt someone enter the pack mind and Seth thought,
Jake why is there a Vampire child on your back? Oh right is that EJ? Bella's boy?
Yes Seth. This is Bella's son. The child made out of anguish I thought back.
EJ jumped off my back and ran forwards, tracing the Mountain lion's path, becoming as lethal as his mother. I watched him and felt a strange mixture of anger and sadness. I was angry at Bella for taking his life away and sad that he would never get to experience life as a child, or a teenager or an adult. Seth shared my emotions and added another. Guilt. He blamed himself that we hadn't protected Charlie better. Kept him alive like we were supposed to as the protectors of the town.
Seth it's not your fault. Or any of the pack's. It's the Volturi who didn't act fast enough to save him. I know it's hard but there's nothing that we could have done I thought sternly.
Seth wasn't consoled by my thoughts and he started off at a slow jog around the parameters of his watch. I heard EJ's scream and acted on impulse to protect him, feeling that it was my duty.

A newborn Vampire had EJ pinned against a tree, his teeth inches away from his throat. I didn't know this Newborn's scent, I knew it wasn't one of Jasper's army since I'd registered their odor, but I had smelt it before. She had been on Charlie. She was his murderer. I launched myself at the Newborn, aiming for her head, then a Male vampire threw himself at me and pinned me against the ground. I could tell by his eyes that he was a lot older than the Newborn and that he was furious.
Jake! Seth exclaimed then howled, as loud and low as he could. Calling out to the entire pack with as much gusto as I ever had.
Five minds added to the pack whole and all of them started to sprint towards me.
"Uncle Jake, look out" EJ snapped. He was kicking out at the Newborn, struggling against her because he was only a child.
I kicked the Vampire off me and snarled at him. The Newborn averted her gaze away from EJ for a split second to see how well her mate- I assumed- was doing.
"Focus Nadia, you must kill the boy. I'll win against a single wolf" he growled, never taking his eyes off me.
In the same second, EJ slid away from the Newborn and bolted into the forest. I saw my pack a mile away and I backed away from the Vampires.
"Go after him!" the male Vampire roared, "He cannot escape!"
Seth, protect the boy. Make sure he gets safely back to the Cullens I thought quickly, snapping at the Newborn- Nadia- as she tried to pass me.
I can't Jake. The small Volturi girl took him. She ran straight towards the house Seth retorted, jetting forward so that Leah was the only one able to keep up with him.
The Vampire darted forward, catching me off-guard and knocked my front legs out from beneath me.
Jake! Leah growled then pushed herself faster so that she left my pack behind. She took down the Newborn as she took the opportunity to leave whilst I was incapacitated. I grinned and leapt up from the ground. The Vampire cast a wary gaze at me, not trusting the grin that appeared on my face. Seth, Embry and Quil came into view behind the Vampire and he turned to face them. Bad move, I thought. I launched myself at the Vampire and the British Volturi landed beside me with a muted thud.
"Jacob, I'll take over. I'll take him back to the Cullens" he said, grabbing the Vampire by the shoulders. I nodded and the British Vampire braced as I moved off the captive. The other Volturi vampire, that I hadn't seen with them before, came out from behind the trees and took hold of the Vampire's right arm.
"Jacob, we are Gideon and Capri. We wish to be your friends although we know we have wronged you in the past. We were there when the Volturi came for Renesmee. We were prepared to fight. We apologize for our actions" the girl said, her voice hinting towards Irish.
I saw through Leah that the Witch twins had hold of the Newborn and whenever she struggled Jane would burn her. These four Vampires would never be my friend but they may not be my enemies anymore.
Jake, we should head back to the Cullens. EJ will be worried about you Leah muttered.
