Chapter 15: Horror
Before Johanna could respond I started walking. I have to find Peeta. Sweat started to roll down my face. I have to say I didn't miss this jungle weather. I throw my coat off and continue walking. I hear Johanna's footsteps behind me.
"Where did you last see him?" She asks.
"We weren't too far from our cave. We were attacked by Cato, Clove, and Gloss. While Cato and Clove tortured Peeta before my eyes, Gloss held me down. I was able to break free of Gloss and shoot Clove. Right after that the earthquake started, and everything went black. Next thing I knew I was in water and you were pulling me up to shore." I say mechanically.
Johanna laughs softly.
"I don't know if you figured this out yet but these aren't the people we once knew. I found that out the hard way."
I don't let her talking slow me down. I keep looking for Peeta.
"I left that night to seek out Finnick and Mags. They lead me to trust them. They were acting just like their selves and I was so excited to have them back. I thought that maybe we'd all find a way to make it out, and it'd be just like they'd never died. They took the first watch so I could sleep. I was awoken to them beating me. In that moment I'd realized that I, Johanna Mason had been tricked. They beat me until they thought I would be unable to move, and left me to die a cruel death of starvation or dehydration. We can't trust them Katniss. They're not our friends. They've been turned into monsters, and I'll be sure Cassandra Snow pays for it." Johanna says.
So what I thought was true. They were all monsters. Even then I knew that I would not be able to kill Finnick, Mags, or Rue. We walked the jungle floor for what seemed like hours.
"Peeta!" I yell.
Johanna grabs my arm.
"What are you crazy? You'll lead them right to us!" She screams.
"Peeta might have camouflaged himself!" I scream back at her.
I hear a noise from a tree above us. I point my bow up at the tree. It's a bird. Not just any bird. A mockingjay.
"Mockingjays can't survive in this type of weather." I whisper.
That's when I hear Rue's four note whistle. I heard it first from a distance, each mockingjay passed the tune down until the mockingjay over our head whistled the notes. I start running to where I first heard the sound. Johanna was right at my heels.
"Katniss! This could be a trap! Stop!" She screams.
I keep running until I see them. I stop in my tracks. Peeta is unconscious, slumped against a tree. Rue is standing a short distance away from him, staring up at the tree with a spear in her hand. I follow Rue's spear to see what she's aiming at. The sight makes me gasp with fear. It's a tracker jacker nest. Dr. Aurliuses voice plays in my head.
"Another tracker jacker sting could send Peeta spiraling all the way back down. Perhaps even worse than before."
"No!" I scream in horror.
"Katniss! Shoot her!" Johanna screams.
I already know I can't. I start running towards them. I hear something woosh past my head. It's Johanna's ax. It falls short of hitting Rue, but it's enough to send her running into the jungle. I collapse to my knees in front of Peeta and shake him.
"Peeta, please wake up!" I scream.
He doesn't move. My sobs make it almost impossible to breathe.
"Peeta." I say again.
I watch his blonde eyelashes flutter for a brief moment, before he opens his eyes. He smiles.
"Katniss." He whispers.
"You have to move! Get up!" I exclaim.
He looks at me with confusion. I practically drag him away until I think we are safe enough.
"Why did we have to move?" he asks.
I start crying hysterically.
"There was a tracker jacker nest above your head!" I exclaim.
He hugs me. Peeta's alive. Peeta's okay. He holds me until my shaking subsides.
"Are you okay?" I manage to choke out.
He smiles.
"I washed up on the beach and drug myself all the way here. Somehow I still had our backpack and I managed to put the cream on my wounds before I fell asleep. I must have been so exhausted from dragging myself."
"Were you electrocuted on the beach too?" Johanna asks.
"Electrocuted? Katniss! You were electrocuted!" He exclaims.
"I'm alright now."
The look of horror on his face doesn't disappear.
"Katniss! What about the baby!"
That sentence sends me reeling. The baby, how could I forget about the baby! I was so consumed with trying to find Peeta, I wasn't even thinking of the baby! If that shock caused my heart to beat irregularly, it could easily stop a tiny baby's heart. I put my hands on my stomach and look down. Our baby. I start crying hysterically and rocking back and forth.
"Peeta, I'm so sorry!" I scream.
Johanna and Peeta are trying to talk to me but I can't hear them. They're far away. All the time we spent trying to get pregnant and I ruin it. I dig my fingers in my scalp and scream before the world goes black.
When I wake up its night. The first thing I see is Johanna in the distance around a fire. That's when I notice Peeta's arms around me and look up at him. He's wearing a wetsuit. Just like the one in the Quell. I look at my own clothing and realize that I'm in one too. The wetsuit fully exposes my baby bump, and that's when I remember. Peeta sees the panic in my eyes and holds me tighter.
"Shh, you're okay that's all that matters. Katniss it's okay." He whispers.
But I'm not okay. This is passed my breaking point. Haymitch needs to get us out, and he needs to get us out now.
