Chapter Two
'-look, G- you know I'd love to, but Michelle's gonna be out of town and the kids have got that-'
'Oh good, you're back! Come give me a hand with this will you?' Deeks called, smiling innocently over his shoulder at the senior agents stood frozen in the centre of the mission. He stood with his back to them, bent over, his hands gripping the edges of Sam's desk which rested at a peculiar angle in the centre of the bullpen.
'Now Sam,' Callen spoke calmly, resting a hand on his partner's arm 'remember your promise. Just...hear him out first.'
Sam stood rooted to the spot, teeth clenched, eyes shut as he fought to stop himself flying off the handle at the scruffy detective. Said Detective meanwhile had now turned round to see what was taking the partners so long and leant casually against the desk.
'Deeks! What-'
'-Now that didn't sound very calm Sam. Deep breaths remember?'
'Or do you need to go and take a nap to calm yourself down?' Kensi chimed in, grinning from where she sat at her- undisturbed- desk.
'I told you,' he huffed 'it's called medit- you know what? Forget it.' Sam took a deep breath before continuing, forced smile in place, voice forcibly calm 'Deeks? What are you doing with my desk?'
'Oh this?' he asked casually, waving a hand in the general direction on the desks 'I was just making room.'
Sam took another steadying breath and Kensi and Callen exchanged a grin behind his back.
'Making room for what?' he pressed out, repetitively balling and unfurling his fists.
'Well, since I'm a fully fledged Agent now- or at least I will be soon, I decided I'd like to make some new additions to the bullpen...'
The vein was popping on Sam's forehead now but Deeks continued undeterred.
'...starting with a new fish tank- I know I just this one back from Hetty but it's kinda small don't you think? I mean it's nice but I just think that little Kensalina needs more room to glide, you know? Plus there's the small issue of my Hetty fish trying to kill all the other fish, I mean Damn! You should've seen the way she got Callen the other day I mean-'
'Deeks.'
'-that was nasty! But anyway, then there's a new coffee machine, this one just hasn't been the same since Kensi hit it a few months back-'
Sam was cracking his neck now and Callen's smile had started to slip, truly worried his partner might snap soon.
'-She says I'm being ridiculous of course but how would she know? She hasn't been drinking the stuff for weeks. Oh and then there's the small issue of your origami collection, it's nice man, it is, but those little frogs you do? Those, my friend, are a choking hazard and I refuse to put our baby in harm's way. I mean, those things are sharp! You can get a serious cut from-'
'You moved my origami?!'
Sam looked as if he was about ready to have a seizure now and Callen decided it was about time to step in.
'Whoa Big Guy,' he placated, moving to stand between Sam and Deeks 'Calm down, it's not like he shredded them, he just-'
Callen suddenly froze as his brain caught up with him and he realised what Deeks had said. Wordlessly he spun round, ignoring Sam's very confused expression.
Kensi now stood next to Deeks, his arm around her waist as they beamed at each other, clearly enjoying their little prank. Kensi turned back to Callen, biting her lip nervously as she waited for his reaction.
Callen was still incapable of forming a response so he simply raised his eyebrows as if to say: seriously?
Kensi exhaled shakily and nodded, smiling shyly.
'Can someone please explain what is happening?' a still rather irritated Sam interrupted.
Kensi and Deeks shared another look, then, turning back to smile at the partners; they both reached into their pockets, simultaneously handing Sam and Callen an ultrasound each.
'Congratulations guys, you're going to be Uncles!'
From the balcony of OPS Hetty smiled as her senior agents embraced the younger two, Sam punching Deeks good-naturedly on the shoulder.
Eric stood frozen, his whistle still in his mouth. Evidently he had come out to call the team up to OPS and had witnessed the whole thing.
'Eric what are you doing? Wait, what's going on?'
'It would appear that Ms Blye and Mr Deeks are expecting, Miss Jones' Hetty smiled 'but Mr Deeks,' she called 'I hardly think that the bullpen will be the most appropriate place for your little 'mutant ninja assassin'.
Deeks grinned up at Hetty, sending her a cheeky wink before returning his gaze to Kensi, who was now observing him curiously. He merely shook his head gently, still smiling softly down at her; a promise to explain later, and pulled her closer to him. Together, they watched as Hetty raised her teacup; her own very unique version of a toast, before turning and disappearing into Ops, leaving Nell and Eric alone on the balcony.
They watched as Callen and Sam again embraced the junior agents, clearly still in shock at the revelation, and the group fell once again into animated conversation. Turning to Eric, whose face mirrored the shock evident on her own, Nell tried to make sense of what she'd just heard.
'Mutant what?'
