Hi everyone, it's me, if any of yall remember who I am lol. I am sorry for my, well, I guess you could call it an unannounced hiatus, but even I didn't see it coming. Between real life deadlines and trying to find out which Uni to go to, fanfiction had to take a backseat. Not to mention how the entirety of season 4 and ESPECIALLY the finale killed my muse. I'm still not happy about any of that bullcrap.
Thought it would be useful for me to write a few bullet points to summarise the last chapters/what's going on since it's been so long.
- The end of the last chapter saw Klaus turning up on Bonnie's doorstep. He has come to take her away to Italy with him where he will look for the sword (canon: to open the tomb to that silas cave to get the cure which so far only Klefan & Rebekah know about) and he may have plans for Bonnie up his sleeve while they're there. ;) We all know he wants a new witch..;)
- Bonnie is indebted to Klaus because he cured Stefan from the werewolf venom that the hunter, Connor, poisoned the beer with at Rebekah's 'moving in' party.
- Bonnie has been seeing some strange things (her reflection in the mirror at the party had not been true).
- Bonnie met Shane for the first time last chapter when she, Damon and Elena visited Whittemore College. He offered to teach her how to get her magic back, but she vaguely told him "maybe".
- Stefan is working with Klaus behind everyone's back to get the cure (basically what was canon in the show) and nobody knows about it yet.
I think that's about it of the important stuff. Lol.
"You should lighten up, love," Klaus said as he crashed into the plush seat beside her. "This must be a first for you, after all."
If he thought first class was going to impress her, he thought wrong. Bonnie bit her tongue and turned away from him; looking out of the window and watching the waves of the Atlantic thrash several miles beneath them.
"Come now, Bonnie," he tried again, "I know it's not in your nature to sulk."
"You don't know anything about me," Bonnie murmured, so low that if he were not a vampire he wouldn't have heard her. But he was, and so he did.
"Oh, I'd like to think I know a few things," Klaus replied playfully, relaxing into the chair opposite her, his right foot balancing on his left knee.
Bonnie finally looked away from the window to glare at him. She was aware he was trying to coax a reaction out of her, and hey guess what it was working. "Well, you thought wrong. My life is none of your business," she said coldly.
"Oh really?" Klaus smiled, relishing the fact she had finally taken the bait. "When I last checked your business is nothing but my business after I saved your little boyfriend." He held up an empty champagne flute and out of nowhere a silent waitress appeared and topped up the glass.
Bonnie sucked the inside of her cheek and thrust her hands into the pockets of her jacket. The last thing she wanted was to communicate with that thing opposite her. She'd much rather just sit here in silence and plot a hundred and one ways to ruin each and every day that Klaus thought he could "keep" her for.
Klaus raised the glass to his blood red lips and stared at the witch beyond it. He hadn't expected this little "agreement" of theirs to be easy going by any stretch of the imagination - especially not for the first few days or weeks anyway. Truthfully, he'd be disappointed with anything less than the small fight Bonnie Bennett was putting up. Without her powers there was little she could do against him - but she had a sharp tongue which more than made up for it.
"Bonnie," he began, looking her dead in the eye, "if you don't start cooperating, I can make this deal we have here very unpleasant for you."
She tried to hide her gulp. "You could have at least let me say my goodbyes."
"I gave you an hour," Klaus reminded her.
Bonnie scowled at him from where she sat. "It wasn't enough time."
"Clearly," he stated, swirling the fresh champagne. "How terrible of you; to only say goodbye to two people in the whole of Mystic Falls."
Bonnie winced but fought back: "Because you didn't give me enough time," she repeated through clenched teeth.
"We had a timed schedule we needed to stick to, and well, I couldn't exactly dictate what time the flight was, now could I?"
She glared at him, because she was about ninety-nine per cent sure that he could, and by the smirk on his face, yes, it was obvious that he could.
"I'm done with the pleasantries, Klaus. Stop talking to me."
He sighed. "You're no fun when you take the high ground, Bonnie. Fortunately for you we only have about forty-five minutes until landing, which is just the amount of time I can drain that air hostess in if I take my time."
Bonnie looked at him sharply as he rose to his feet. "Klaus-"
"Before you say anything," he interrupted, "Do I need I remind you that you are in no position to question my actions?"
He waited a painstaking ten seconds for her to reluctantly shake her head before making his way to the back of the private jet.
10 hours earlier
"You have exactly one hour to pack any essentials you might want to bring."
"What about my friends?" Bonnie started, "I have to say goodbye, who knows how long it could be until they see me again?"
Klaus smiled and raised his eyebrows, unphased. "Well, you'd better get a move on then, love."
Bonnie stared at him in disbelief before snapping into action and darting up the stairs, as quietly as possible as to not wake her father.
Oh God - her Dad! What on Earth was she going to tell him? She couldn't just vanish without any explanation. Truthfully it would be giving him a taste of his own medicine but that was by-the-by.
She pulled out the one and only suitcase she owned and started rummaging through her drawers, throwing in anything she could get her hands on. Was it hot in Italy at this time of year? She shrugged and stuffed in a pair of shorts and realised her hands were shaking. She focussed on packing, and packing alone, thinking of trivial and unimportant things to distract her from the mountainous mess that was this situation. Should I take sunglasses? Which brand of night cream would be best?
"Get a grip," she hissed to herself.
She carried her suitcase carefully down the stairs and glared when she saw Klaus still standing at the doorway. At least he couldn't come in, she supposed.
"You know you don't have to stay here and watch me," she stated as she went into the kitchen to get a notepad and pen.
"I think I do."
Bonnie ignored him and quickly scribbled a note to her father.
'Going away for a bit. Don't worry about me. If you have any questions, talk to Stefan.
Love you, Bonnie'
She didn't really know what else to put. It would take a ten page essay to explain everything, and she wasn't entirely sure she wanted her dad knowing the truth anyway. It would probably only make him worry even more. As long as he was safe – that's all that mattered in the end. She placed the pen down hesitantly and stepped away, telling herself this was for the best.
Bonnie took a deep breath and went back to her suitcase. She tried to pretend Klaus wasn't there as she went out of the front door and locked it behind her, but his leering was making that difficult.
"Go away, Klaus," she ordered, "You said I have an hour."
"Yes," he replied, following her as she stepped off of the porch, "but I didn't specify where I'd be during that hour."
"And where's that?" she sighed.
"Right by your side."
Bonnie suddenly stopped walking and turned to face him. "Why? You think I'm going to run away?"
Klaus shrugged. "Witches have a tendency to be sneaky and you in particular seem to be exceptional at finding loopholes."
"You're one to talk," she scoffed, continuing her stride.
The hybrid caught up with her quickly and rushed in front of her, blocking the way. He reached out and took her shoulders gently, forcing her to look at him.
"If you were to run off," he began," I'd be disappointed with your lack of care for Stefan's life, which is still hanging on this agreement, might I remind you," he said in a deceivingly gentle tone, "If you don't keep your word I can always go back and bite him; finish what that hunter started."
Bonnie's upper lip twitched from her irritation. "You don't have to worry about me keeping my word."
"Good." He stepped aside and let her pass by. He laughed when he watched her begin to walk towards her car. "Ah-ah-ah, Bonnie."
She stopped in her tracks again, but didn't turn back around. "What now?" she spat impatiently.
Klaus' chest vibrated with his silent chuckles and his shoulder purposefully brushed against hers as he took her suitcase from her hand. He carried it with obvious ease towards his own car, which had such a slick black paint-do that Bonnie hadn't even noticed it parked on the roadside in the dark.
He popped open the boot and singlehandedly placed the suitcase inside as if it were a bag of feathers. He then went to the passenger door, opened it and waited for a reluctant Bonnie Bennett to approach.
She bit the inside of her cheek and forced her feet forward.
Klaus rolled his eyes and made show of looking at the designer watch which was adorned on his wrist. "Hurry up, witch, you're running out of time. Only thirty-one minutes of your hour left."
That made her hurry up. She scurried into the expensive car and pulled back the seat belt. Klaus was already in the driver's seat and waiting by the time it clicked into the lock.
"Where to?" Klaus asked, "Choose wisely, Bonnie. I estimate you only have time for one stop."
The teenage girl gulped. "Salvatore Boarding House."
Stefan's ultra-sensitive ears perked when he heard the sound of footsteps approaching the front door. One pair: relaxed, heavy booted, arrogant. This would be the second time Klaus had showed up tonight, the first being for when he daggered Rebekah for knowing too much. A necessary insurance policy, apparently.
The second pair: light-footed; high heeled boots. He sped to the door and swung it open before she could even knock.
She was as beautiful as ever. Distressed though, and it showed, but still beautiful. He watched her swallow nervously, something he also noticed she usually did when she was trying to fight back tears. Stefan pursed his lips. After she'd spent the day with Damon and ignored his calls, he'd vowed to give her a hard time whenever he next saw her, but his resolve was crumbling. He wanted to take her in his arms; he'd hold her there forever if she'd let him.
"I have twenty minutes and counting," her voice cracked.
Stefan stepped forward and pulled Bonnie towards him. He'd be damned if he had them spend their last minutes arguing. Her fingers gripped the material of his shirt tightly, almost ripping it, and he shut his eyes for several seconds, breathing in and locking her scent into his memory before pulling away. When he looked down at her now, he noticed a single tear path down her cheek. He smiled sadly and wiped it dry with the pad of his thumb. "You'll be okay," he whispered.
"Will-"she cleared her throat, "Will we be okay?"
He looked down and into her eyes. No matter how long she was away for, he knew he wouldn't have any trouble remembering the exact shade of her perfect green eyes. She was watching him carefully, for anger; regret; resentment.
He leaned in slowly and captured her lips, softly pressing his against hers until she moaned softly. He heard Klaus clear his throat somewhere in the background and Bonnie stiffened slightly at the sound. He held her face in his hands gently and pulled away, after running his tongue over her bottom lip, swearing to himself he'd remember the taste of her.
"Yes," he whispered.
"I'm sorry, Stefan," she said, wiggling her fingers through his hand. He stared down at her inquisitively. "For everything. I've been a mess, recently. I know you've noticed. And I can't tell you why yet...but I might be able to one day."
"Is that why you were avoiding me today?" he asked.
"Yes and no," she replied, "But it doesn't matter – whatever my reasoning, avoiding you today was a mistake. I've been brought up to face my fears, not run from them."
Stefan's brow creased. "You're afraid of me?"
"I'm afraid of everything," she frowned. It was the truth, and possibly the most truthful she had been to Stefan since the world got flipped, turned upside down. She was afraid for her future – she didn't know what was going to happen, if things would stay as they were or magically return to how they were before. She was afraid of her past – her new past – the one she had been granted, that she couldn't remember. And her original past – she was afraid it was going to come and bite her in the ass.
Stefan's worry only increased, and he opened his mouth to say something but Bonnie gently placed her finger over his lips before he could.
"Shh," she whispered, "There's not enough time."
"But-"
She bounced up onto her tiptoes and stunned him with a deep kiss. He sighed and finally nodded.
"I love you," he breathed, pushing her fringe off her forehead.
Bonnie nodded and stroked his jawline. "I love you too."
It wasn't a lie. She did love Stefan. She wasn't strictly in love with Stefan yet. Love took time. Love took longer than a week of being dumped in a crazy new normal. But if there was one thing she was sure of, it was that she cared for Stefan more than anyone else alive (or undead) right now.
She sniffed and took a small step back, but still gripped Stefan's hand. "I need you to look after Caroline for me. And Elena. And make sure my dad doesn't get into trouble and-"
"I will," Stefan half-smiled and pulled Bonnie in for one last hug. "Trust you to worry about everybody but yourself."
She choked out a laugh.
"Less than ten minutes left, Miss Bennett," Klaus' voice pierced through the protective bubble Bonnie felt around her and Stefan. "If you don't mind he and I have a certain matter to discuss before we leave."
Bonnie pulled away from Stefan. "What?"
"It's private, love," Klaus said dismissively, "Why don't you go and say goodbye to Damon whilst you're waiting; he's been eavesdropping on this entire conversation."
Bonnie unconsciously moved in front of Stefan slightly. "You said you'd leave him. I'm not-"
Klaus rolled his eyes almost lazily before flashing forward, picking Bonnie up, and placing her inside the boarding house. "Before I let you back out you ought to think about how you are under my orders now, witch. I won't be so lenient if you give me trouble in Italy."
He slammed the front door shut before Bonnie could protest, but that didn't stop her from nearly hammering the door down with her tiny fists until they were black and blue.
"Bonnie."
She turned at the sound of Damon's calm voice. She hadn't anticipated how close behind her he was and tried to move away, but her back met with the door behind her. Damon sighed and took a step back at the same time as he took her shaking hands in his. As well as being slightly swollen there were many cuts along her knuckles. The whites of her eyes were lined with bright red blood vessels and her eyelashes were wet and clumped together from her tears of rage. She was vulnerable in this state, but he knew it wouldn't be long until she had control over herself again.
"You should let me-"
"No," she said immediately. "No blood."
He exhaled wearily. "I thought you might say that."
She wormed her hands out of his and wiped her eyes. "I'm fine."
Damon stood and stared at her as the avoided looking at him. Despite having what he believed was a good day with her at the College; she had never felt so far away. He could almost see the walls she was putting back up with every second that went by.
"I'll miss you Bonnie," he finally said. "I don't know how Mystic Falls is going to get by without its local superhero."
She finally looked up at him with a sad smile. "Looks like it's time for you step up then."
"Ha," Damon snorted.
"Can you hear what they're saying?" she asked suddenly.
"Stefan and Klaus? No," Damon replied, "They must have gone somewhere to talk privately."
"You need to look out for him, Damon," she said, "he's clearly got something going on with Klaus and whatever it is cannot be good."
"I know," he replied simply. "I will. You just focus on looking after yourself in Italy, okay?"
"I will," she repeated back as she reached for the door handle. Sure enough, when she turned it now, the door swung open with ease to reveal the empty front porch. Bonnie sighed and turned back to Damon.
"So I guess this is goodbye," she said.
Damon nodded and then snorted. "I could actually hug you right now."
Bonnie blinked. Neither of them saw it coming, but they both walked towards each other silently until she crashed into his arms. She closed her eyes as he rocked them slightly, cradling her.
"It's not goodbye," he said, "not forever. I'll see you later."
Present Time
Italy
Bonnie carefully placed one heel forward and then the next until she was firmly standing on European soil. Seconds later she heard Klaus' boots advancing behind her.
"I have a bad feeling about this," she stated, speaking more to herself than to him.
"That's funny," Klaus replied, his warm breath tickling the back of her neck, "because I feel quite the opposite."
Mystic Falls
"Bonnie's gone? Just gone?! Are you shitting me?" Caroline seethed.
"She didn't have a choice," Stefan replied monotonously.
The blonde vampire shot up from the plush seat she had been rigidly perched in and began to pace in front of the fireplace. Stefan stared into the middle distance and rolled an empty glass, which seconds before had been more than half full of warm blood, along the arm of the chair he was sitting in.
"I swear to God, when that asshole comes back to Mystic Falls I will make it my personal priority to permanently remove that unbearable smile from his arrogant little face!"
Stefan sighed. "It's okay, Caroline."
Caroline stopped pacing and pinned her cornflower blue eyes on Stefan. "Seriously? Stefan, none of this is okay." She put her hand in the air to stop Stefan interrupting. "No, don't even try to tell me that Bonnie can 'handle it'. No. Don't get me wrong, I know that girl is a badass but Klaus has been around a long freakin' time and last I checked Bonnie's head isn't exactly in the best place right now since she lost her magic. He wants her."
"You think I don't know that?" Stefan exhaled.
"No, I know you know that. I just know that you're choosing to ignore it for some reason which I haven't figured out yet," she eyed him.
"I trust Bonnie," Stefan stated.
Caroline snorted. "It doesn't matter whether you trust Bonnie. We all trust Bonnie. It's that hybrid creep I don't trust. He's up to something, and I'll be damned if I don't find out what it is before he sucks my best friend into his evil psycho bubble."
Stefan swallowed and rose to his feet. "I'm going to get another drink."
Caroline looked over to him cautiously as he began to walk away. "Stef?" She waited for him to turn around. "Are you sure that's a good idea?"
He exhaled steadily. "Yeah. I'm fine I just…need a little extra to take the edge off. Or I'm gonna go ripping heads off of bodies."
He left the room, leaving Caroline feeling even more uneasy than before. Naturally Bonnie leaving would take its toll on the unstable vamp but it didn't make the situation any less precarious. She lumbered back over to the sofa and let herself fall into it, wearily shaking her head so that her blonde curls bounced off her shoulders. "Please come back soon, Bonnie," she mumbled to herself.
Italy
The Next Day
Klaus waltzed into Bonnie's designated room in his suave Italian villa without bothering to knock. To his disappointment and semi-surprise, she was fully dressed, and sat crossed legged on the ridiculously over-the-top king-sized bed.
He raised his eyebrows. "Love, it's six in the morning."
"So?" Bonnie asked nonchalantly, licking the tip of her index finger so she could turn the page of the Grimoire she was studying. It was one of the many that Klaus had acquired over the centuries, which he had been all-too-kind to lend to her over the duration of their stay.
"So…" he drawled back, walking over to the bed, "would it not be wise to be sleeping after the long flight?"
Bonnie shrugged. "Jetlag, I guess," she lied smoothly.
"You know you have to sleep sometime, Bonnie."
Bonnie slammed the book shut and finally looked up from the dry old pages to see him hovering above her, wearing dark wash denim jeans and a grey Henley shirt, hair tousled and curly, cheeks grizzly with his usual light stubble. Around his neck were the usual tags and beads which he somehow managed to pull off so well. She unfolded her legs and slid off the bed so she was stood at the opposite end from him – as far away as possible. "Well, it might be easier for me to sleep if I wasn't sharing living space with a serial killer."
"Did you even sleep at all last night?" he questioned, deflecting her insults expertly.
Bonnie folded her arms over her chest and shifted uncomfortably when Klaus moved closer to the head of the bed. He grabbed a feather stuffed pillow. "Don't. "
She stomped over to him and grabbed the pillow out of his hands, but it was too late. He had already caught a scent; or rather a lack thereof and there was a wide triumphant smirk playing on his lips.
"So you didn't sleep last night," he concluded. "Didn't even bother trying."
Bonnie shoved him out of the way and placed the pillow back by the headrest. He took her wrist and spun her around to face him; he was also holding her much too close for her liking.
"Bonnie," he spoke quietly, "I can't help you if you can't help yourself."
"I don't want your help," she said back to him through gritted teeth.
"Yes you do," he corrected her simply, as if it were a fact of life. "You want your magic back Bonnie. You're tired of being powerless, of standing idly by while your friends run around endangering themselves and plotting their little schemes which are of no business to you anymore; because you are a mere mortal. You can't help them anymore…and you can't even protect your own father-"
"Let go of me," Bonnie spat, tugging at his hold on her wrist.
He stared at her for a moment, with a look of slight disappointment in his eyes. "As you wish."
Klaus stepped away and Bonnie also took several steps back.
"Get some sleep, Bonnie. I have arrangements for you tonight."
"Fine."
Klaus joined his hands together behind his back and went to leave the room. Her voice calling his name stopped him at the doorway.
"Yes, love?" he asked.
"If you touch me without my permission again, I will fuck you up."
He grinned. "And how do you plan to do that, sweetheart, without your powers?"
"You're not that hard to outsmart," she stated, opening up the Grimoire again.
Klaus chuckled. "Of course," he said sarcastically. He took another step out of the room and then paused. "I'll be back around noon. Get some sleep or I'll have to suspend the reunion to a later date."
"Reunion?" Bonnie asked disinterestedly, again not bothering to look up from the book of spells which she couldn't currently practice.
"Family reunion," he repeated, "Tonight. Did I not mention that? I think it will be quite enlightening for you."
"I'm not spending a single minute with your psychotic family, Klaus."
Klaus smiled deviously. "I never said it was my family."
Bonnie's tore her forest-green eyes away from the Grimoire. "Excuse me?"
"You're not the only Bennett I know, Bennett."
"Klaus-"
"Noon," he interrupted. "Get some sleep, love."
He shut the door behind him, grinning satisfactorily as he strode down the hall and eventually all the way out onto the cobbled streets.
Bonnie stared at the door. "What?!
So I'm bringing back a member of Bonnie's family who may or may not be able to help her get her powers back, and who knows maybe help with a few more mysteries ;) Let me know who you think it might be! ;) Love you all xoxo
