Jade and Robbie were stood beside their lockers discussing their concerns about Cats recent weird behaviour when Andre rushed over looking flustered.
'Hey Jade will you be able to let me in to the house after school? I'm planning a surprise for Tori when she gets back from the basketball game. I would ask Tori but you know— it's a surprise.' Andre explained but Jade shook her head
'I would but I have that -you know what- straight after school' Jade hissed through her teeth. She was actually extremely nervous about the 20-week scan because this would be the one Dr. Rose did all the tests to make sure nothing was wrong with the baby. It was also the one that she would find out the sex of the baby. Beck and her had only had a short discussion about it as they both agreed they wanted to find out. The pregnancy itself was a big enough surprise.
'Oh sorry.. yeah' Andre said remembering the discussion he'd had this morning with Tori about it. Tori felt guilty as she couldn't attend the scan with her because of the rehearsal for the game.
'Wait.. can I come with?' Andre suddenly had an idea that could solve both problems. 'I'll just wait for you outside and then when you're done i'll decorate the house.
'You really want to sit in the maternity ward for an hour?' Jade asked skeptically, Andre nodded not seeing why she was so surprised. 'Wow you really do like Tori' Jade raised an eyebrow walking off, wondering what other great lengths he'd go to to make her happy.
When they arrived at the hospital Andre looked terrified which Jade kind of found hilarious. His freak outs at all the childbirth and newborn posters in the waiting room were a welcome distraction for Jade who spent the entire time calming him down rather than worrying about the scan.
'Jade West?' A smiley nurse with a pony tail and a lilac tunic called her name out. Jade stood up and turned to face Andre, assuring him she'd only be half an hour.
'Your boyfriend can come in too' The smiley nurse interrupted and Jades eyes widened.
'Uh.. no i'm not, she's not! I'm not the Dad.. We're just friends!' Andre blurted out and just like that things went from awkward to extremely awkward.
'Oh..' The nurse looked taken aback 'Well your friend can come in Jade'
'He doesn't want to' Jade rolled her eyes as Andre's demeanour started to return.
'No! I do want to. I mean if you want me to, then I do. Do you?' Andre rambled looking at Jade for reassurance. Jade exhaled considering it, she did sort of want someone there. But she sort of really wished that person was Beck.
'Yeah come on' Jade agreed.
The nurse led the pair to a smaller waiting area where they sat silently. A million things were running through Jades head but above all she just really, really hoped the baby was ok. Within five minutes, the door to Dr Rose's office opened and the smiley woman called them in.
'Hi Jade, who's this?' Dr. Rose asked, surprised to see a new face
'This is my friend Andre, he's Tori's boyfriend.' Jade explained
'Nice to meet you I'm Dr. Rose, Jades obstetrician' the friendly doctor held her hand out to the uncomfortable looking teenager.
'Yeah yeah, lovely, can we just get on with it!' Jade interrupted their pleasantries, taking a seat on the side of the bed.
'Nervous?' Dr. Rose asked suspiciously
'No' Jade replied automatically.
'Well good because you don't need to be, but if you're anxious we can do the ultrasound first and do the general after'
'Yeah do that' Jade lay back eager and closed her eyes.
'How's your boyfriend getting on with the movie?' the doctor asked interestedly, as she set up the ultrasound equipment.
'Fine' Jade replied, her heart pounding.
'I'm going to go get the transmission gel, i'll be right back' The doctor smiled, leaving the room. Jade covered her face with her hands and exhaled trying to calm down.
'Hey, it's going to be ok' Andre said, approaching the bed.
'How do you know that?' Jade wailed. Andre frowned, thinking he should have thought this more through.
'Ok I don't, but i'm here for you alright? Now stop panicking' Andre said supportively. Jade pulled her hands away from her face and looked up at the dreaded guy.
'This is weird' Jade pointed out.
'Uh huh' Andre agreed. They had been friends for years but almost by accident. They were friends because of Beck and somewhat because of music. Other than that the pair really didn't have much in common. Nevertheless Andre was glad he'd chosen to come in here. Even though he felt completely out of place, if it made her even slightly less anxious then he was happy to be here. The doctor reentered the room and smiling took a seat next to Jade. She rolled up Jades top and placed the gel on her stomach.
'Well your little ones definitely grown!' The doctor smiled, noticing the size of Jades bump. Jade just smiled preferring not to talk.
'Ok lets see your baby' The doctor smiled. It only took a few minutes but it felt like a lifetime for Jade until they heard the heartbeat. Jade relaxed a little once she heard it but she knew it wasn't over yet. Andre on the other hand was fascinated, having never heard anything like it before. He moved closer so he could see the image on the screen as the doctor turned it towards Jade.
'Thats their head and thats their hand' Dr Rose pointed out. Jade stared at the screen whilst Andre watched with his mouth wide.
'Do you want to know the sex?' The doctor asked, after a few more minutes of looking at the screen.
'Can you tell?' Jade asked.
'Yes' the doctor smiled. Jade nodded, remembering her and Beck's earlier discussion about it.
'Wait!' Jade cried, before the doctor had the chance to tell her. She glanced at the screen one last time. She just wanted one last minute with her baby before she knew this about them. When she felt ready she turned back to the doctor and nodded again
'Sure you want to know?' Dr Rose confirmed.
'Yeah' Jade exhaled in anticipation. The doctor took one last glance at the fetus on the monitor before turning back to Jade. The room was suddenly filled with a wave of excitement and the dreaded guy leant forwards, taking hold of Jades hand. It was the moment they'd all been waiting for.
Beck was sitting in his hotel room practising lines with a group of actors from the movie when he received a text from Jade. He hastily swallowed the gulp of hot cocoa he'd just taken, burning his tongue in the process and read and reread the message.
'Uh oh.. I bet that's the girlfriend again' His british roommate teased, pushing him lightly on the shoulder. Beck didn't deny his roommates suspicion, letting the wide grin he'd been suppressing escape his lips.
'Aww look at his face' a couple of the girls joked, completely oblivious to what he'd just found out. 'Whats her name Beck?' Another of his costars asked genuinely interested.
'Jade' Beck smiled savouring the moment. He didn't get to say her name as often as he would like now they were so far away. 'Be right back' He jumped up grabbing his laptop and rushing downstairs to the lounge. It was already one in the morning in London so Beck tried to be quiet as he flipped open the video chat and called the pregnant girl.
'I love you' Beck said the instant the screen showed her image. Jade smiled whole heartedly, just seeing the happy look on his face was worth letting her guard down for a moment.
'You're happy' Jade noted.
'Of course I'm happy' Beck grinned 'We're having a daughter!'
'And a son would have been bad?'
'No I would have been happy then too, I just can't wait to feel them'
'Well trust me, I can feel them now.. kicking, hard!' Jade emphasised, placing a hand on her swollen stomach. 'When are you home? I want you!' she pouted.
'You want me?' Beck raised an eyebrow and Jade shook her head laughing.
'Yess, how long is it now?'
'One month' Beck replied. His smile sunk a little as he noticed Jades disappointed face. 'Was the scan ok?' he quickly changed the subject.
'Yeah it was fine, there are no obvious heart, bone, aesthetic or other organ problems with her and she's the perfect size for her age.' Jade said in relief 'Oh and Andre came with me' Jade returned to her usual composure as she snacked on some carrot sticks dipped in sugar.
'Andre went with you?' Beck's eyes widened.
'Uh huh'
'Why?'
'Because I wanted someone to come and Tori couldn't so Andre offered' Jade smirked at Beck's grumpy face, he went to say something else but Jade interrupted him before he could say something he would regret. It was weird seeing Beck, Mr. Cool as a cucumber, actually jealous. He'd been extra protective since he found out about the pregnancy. They continued chatting for another hour until Beck overheard the doorbell and then Cat's high voice resonating throughout the Vega household.
'I have to go now babe. Andre's throwing a surprise party thing for Tori' Jade explained.
'Ok, please be careful' Beck said anxiously after hearing what had happened with the drunk guys at the last party she'd been to without him.
'Calm down, it's hardly a party its Me, Cat, Robbie and Andre' Jade rolled her eyes but smiling nonetheless, 'I love you ok? Phone me tomorrow?'
'I love you too' Beck looked back sadly as Jade disconnected the video call. As much as he loved and needed these video calls they always left him wishing he could just jump on a plane home and hold her and kiss her and just take care of her.
Exhaling he closed his laptop and turned to leave but suddenly his blood ran cold as he saw the director and his location manager for the movie sitting on the sofas nearby. The director motioned him over and Beck walked over trying to look calm.
'I think we need to have a little talk don't you?'
Back in LA Andre, Jade, Cat, and Robbie were congregated on the sofa's in the Vega living room. They had gathered there to congratulate Tori on singing the national anthem for the Northridge College Basketball Game. But after they all witnessed the disastrous dog incident live on tv, Andre quickly hid all the decorations and snacks and told everyone to act like nothing had happened. However when Tori returned home with Trina, the mortified look on her face was difficult to ignore.
'Hey baby' Andre smiled immediately moving to stand next to her.
'We saw you!' Cat giggled '
'Haha you got dog dragged' Rex sniggered
'Why are they all here?' Tori wailed, facing Jade angrily.
'Don't look at me, Andre invited them!' Jade threw her hands up in defence.
'I didn't know you were gonna mess up the song.' Andre sighed, wrapping his arm around her shoulders apologetically.
'I didn't mess up the song!' Tori snapped, pushing Andre's arm away. Andre looked nervously at the others as an awkward silence filled the room.
'Why didn't you just finish singing the national anthem and then get dragged by a dog?' Cat asked, breaking the silence. Tori didn't dignify that question with an answer and just glowered storming upstairs upset.
'I'm gonna go make sure she's ok' Andre said before bounding up the stairs after the tanned girl. The remaining group just looked at each other unsure what to do now.
'Well this has been a great party' Jade broke the tension. 'Cat, you want me to give you a ride home?'
'Sure, you can just drop me off at school' Cat replied nonchalantly.
'School?' Jade frowned suspiciously, glancing at Robbie who was listening in to their conversation intently 'But it's night time.'
'Wow you sure do know a lot about time' Cat shrugged, quickly running out of the door before Jade could ask her any more questions. Robbie and Jade shared an anxious look, both concerned about the little red head who had been behaving different for over a week. Jade waited a few seconds before stepping towards the door and motioning to Robbie;
'Come on lets follow her.'
Jade and Robbie watched silently from the front of Jades car as Cat locked her sparkly pink bicycle carefully in the bike shed and scurried quickly in the direction of their school. Robbie leaned forwards in his seat squinting, watching the red head sneak in through the window in Sikowitz classroom. As soon as she disappeared into the school her two friends hurried out of the car and ran over to the window, determined to find out what was going on with her.
'Hurry!' Robbie hissed as Jade struggled, climbing through the window, 'here I'll help you' he added placing his hands on her back to "assist" her.
'Don't push me! Don't push me!' Jade yelled as she toppled through the window, her hand moving protectively to her stomach and only just landing on her feet. Jade glared at the curly haired boy as he scrambled through the window after her.
'One word.. Pregnant!' Jade yelled angrily.
'Alright!' Robbie said brusquely, pulling a torch out of his pants. Jade snatched the torch from him and took wide paces out into the hall in search of Cat with Robbie closely behind. They followed the sound of footsteps until they reached the black box theatre. They looked around confused until they noticed a ladder leading up into the attic and completely bewildered they followed her up. Jade pulled open the last door they'd seen her walk into, shocked to find the red head sat on a makeshift bed and surrounded by all her belongings.
'Cat! What are you doing here?' Robbie asked, looking around at the now very cat-like room in disbelief.
'I guess I kind of.. live here now' Cat admitted in a small, sad voice.
'Why are you living in a tiny room in the attic of our school?' Jade asked gently, seeing that Cat seemed upset. Cat sighed deeply before going on to explain that her parents were taking her brother to a special clinic in Idaho so he could get lots of mental relaxation and that they wouldn't be back for two years. But there were still a few things that didn't make sense.
'But why have you been sleeping here at school?' Robbie asked confused.
'Because! My parents wanted to take me with them to Idaho but I don't want to go, I want to stay here!' Cat wailed determinedly. 'Dont you have some other relative in LA you can live with?' Jade shook her head, there was no way she was leaving Cat here.
'What about your grandmother?' Robbie suggested
'Yeah what do you call her? Nona?'
'I would love to live with my Nona but she moved away to Italy' Cat explained.
'Well.. You can't live here!' Jade said firmly and Robbie nodded vigorously behind her in agreement. 'Why?' Cat wailed, her smile completely gone and the corners of her mouth tilting downwards in sadness.
'You just can't..' Jade stopped and pinched the bridge of her nose, struggling to find the words to explain this simply to her. Cat was whimpering, tears pricking the edge of her big brown eyes.
'Cat, why didn't you tell me about this?' Jade sighed exasperatedly.
'I didn't want you to get sad or mad' Cat looked down, hugging Mr Purple close to her chest.
'The only reason I'd be sad or mad is because you're sleeping here, in this damp, disgusting room with rats in the ceiling. You just cant live here Cat, I won't let you!' Jade folded her arms decisively .
'I thought you would be too busy to help me.' Cat said quietly not looking her directly in the eye, but the mutter was loud enough for Jade to hear and she looked back at her oldest friend, completely unsettled that she thought that.
'What?' Jade cried in shock 'Cat you're my best friend! I'm never too busy for you, no matter whats going on with me, you can always come to me when something's wrong'
'Like how you came to me when you got kicked out?' Cat looked up at Jade with the most betrayed and serious look in her eyes the pale girl thought she'd ever seen. It was quiet for a couple of seconds as Jade took in what Cat had just said and Robbie tried discretely to leave the room but completely failed, tripping over a bucket and pushing the door instead of pulling.
Jade sighed sitting down next to the red head on the little camp bed she'd set up to sleep on and quickly enclosed her in a hug. Cat hugged back emotionally exhausted and slightly relieved to finally have all this off her chest.
'I should have told you' Jade said eventually.
'Yeah you should' Cat agreed, sniffling a little.
'I'm sorry, I should have trusted you' Jade apologised sincerely 'But I promise i'm always here for you. You can always trust me.'
'I don't know what to do' Cat confessed looking down, close to tears again.
'Look, Beck and I are getting an apartment as soon as he gets back, you can be our roommate. We'll find a three bed apartment and we'll fix all this' Jade said decisively.
'You mean it?' Cat asked hopefully, wiping tears out of her eyes.
'As long as you don't mind living with a screaming, crying infant.' Jade smiled as Cat giggled leaning her head on the pale girls shoulder.
'I love babies' Cat said sweetly as she hugged Jade tight. They stayed there for a little while longer until they heard Robbie freaking out by himself outside.
'Sleepover at Tori's?' Jade suggested and Cat nodded as they both stood up, happy to leave the dingy, dirty attic.
