It was a Friday and the morning of Jade's last day at Hollywood Arts before she took time off to rest for the remainder of the pregnancy. The pregnant girl was battling through a tough week of exams and it was only about to get harder. She saved her least favourite subject for last. Math had never been the pale girl's strong point, but recently she'd been letting the subject slip even further.
Beck woke up early that day to prepare a huge breakfast of pancakes, fruit salad, cereal and granola. Jade, for one, had more than appreciated the oreo milkshakes he went to the effort to blend himself. Cat, positively delighted that Beck had decided to go to this effort, ate happily whilst the tanned guy tested the brunette on her math.
"So, how do you factorise a non linear equation?" Beck asked, reading through Jade's revision notes.
"Errr, you square ax and then multiply b or something." Jade replied.
"-And then make each bracket equal to 0." Beck finished for her. Jade grimaced and anxiously ran a hand through her hair. Each wrong answer gnawed away at her confidence.
"It's ok." Beck reassured her, moving on quickly. "How do you complete the square?"
"X squared... something." Jade squinted her eyes, desperately trying to think. She knew she had done this about a thousand times with her teacher. For some unfathomable reason, her brain just wasn't functioning today.
"Think about it. If x2 = 2x + 7, what would you do first?" Beck said, still reading from her math text book.
"Rearrange the equation?" She answered with uncertainty.
"Yes!" He cheered. "See, you do know it. Now, what do you do next?"' Beck replied encouragingly.
"X2 + 7/2?" Jade continued unsurely.
"Not quite." Beck said gently. "Why don't you try it again?"
"Uggghhh! Beck, I can't do it! What's the point?!" She growled before viciously stabbing a strawberry with her fork and biting it maliciously.
"Shhh, babe you'll be fine. Stop doubting yourself." Beck answered calmly.
"I'm not doubting myself!" She protested. "I just don't see when I will ever need to complete a square or figure out the length of the side of a triangle or expand a bracket!" Jade pulled at her hair anxiously.
"Ok, but don't get stressed. It's not good for you." Beck said sensitively, laying the math book gently on the table.
"Well I am stressed, so it's too late for that!" Jade moaned. She snatched the book from the tabletop and rapidly flicked through the pages to the algebra section. Beck stood up behind her and massaged her shoulders, hoping to soothe some of the tension in her tight muscles before bending down and placing a chaste kiss on her cheek.
"No matter what happens today, or however the exam goes, it's ok. You can retake it if you have to, and its understandable if today isn't the day." He assured.
"Oh, so you think I'm going to fail?"Jade snapped.
"I never said that." He replied defensively. "I just think you've been distracted and focused on other things." Beck said calmly, placing a hand on her swolen stomach.
"Thats not an excuse, at least not according to Mrs. Cartwright." Jade rolled her eyes.
"What do you mean?" Beck frowned and his eyebrows furrowed in confusion.
"Just because I'm pregnant doesn't mean I have an excuse for my bad grades. Why should I get special treatment above the other students? I should have put more time into my education. It was my choice to have this baby, so I have to face the consequences." Jade quoted, recalling a few of the things her math teacher had told her during her extra help sessions.
"Is that what she's been saying to you?" Beck asked harshly, barely able to conceal his shock. Feeling slightly ashamed, Jade nodded, avoiding looking him directly in the eye. With a jolt of realization, he suddenly understood why Jade got so emotional during her extra tuition.
"Well, she's stupid. That's an incredibly unfair thing to say." Beck continued seriously.
Jade just shrugged, turning the page in her math book. Beck shook his head. Reluctantly, he went back to eating his breakfast in disbelief. How could her math teacher be so unsupportive?
Before she went into the exam Beck gave Jade a huge pep talk, reassuring her more than anything that it was ok if she didn't pass. He wasn't stupid. He knew she was going to struggle with this one, and as much as he wanted her to pass, it wasn't all that likely. Jade gave him a kiss on the lips before leaving him to go take the exam whilst he went to class.
There were only five minutes left of the exam when Jade realized she hadn't completed half of the questions on the paper - but she just couldn't do it. Her brain just couldn't remember any of the equations she was supposed to do. When the examiner took in her paper, she let out a sigh of relief, just happy to see the test finally gone.
After retrieving her bag from the front of the room, the examiner gave her an apologetic smile and held open the door for her. Jade glared at the woman as she flounced out of the door with as much grace as she could muster. She didn't need pity, she was pregnant- not dying.
Once she was sure she was out of sight of the examiner, she switched back to her late pregnancy waddle. It was only 10:30am, which meant everyone would still be in Sikowitz's improv class. She was tired and miserable after the disastrous exam, but this could quite possibly be her last class with her favourite teacher. After weighing up her options, she decided she would go. She was already over half an hour late so she was going to draw attention to herself, but when didn't she draw attention to herself these days?
She opened the door to the classroom and as predicted, several people turned around and stared, however she only had to glare threateningly for a few seconds until they all turned back in fear. Rolling her eyes, Jade walked over to Beck, who was trying his hardest to hide his smirk. He put his arm around her shoulders supportively as she sat down in the chair next to him.
"That was hot." Beck leant forwards and whispered into her ear. Jade raised an eyebrow and pushed him lightly in the chest, ignoring his cheeky grin.
"Jade! How do you feel about this? We all do the broadway musical Annie.. underwater!" Sikowitz cried enthusiastically, grinning like he had just been awarded most creative idea of the year.
"Well, wow! What an opportunity! I'm going to say no." Jade replied, her voice dripping with blatant sarcasim.
"None of us want to do a play underwater." Tori said in agreement.
"Or on a nasty bus." Andre added. The whole class began to mutter incoherently in consensus to their answers.
"I see, alright. No bus play, No underwater musical. Why don't we all just lay on the floor and stick our faces in the carpet thusly!" Sikowitz threw himself dramatically on the floor of the stage.
"I think Sikowitz is sad." Cat said sadly as the teacher made a sobbing sound into the carpet.
"I'm not sad." Sikowitz rolled onto his side "I'm just disappointed in you children."
"Why?" Beck frowned.
"Because! You're all a bunch of negative Nancies, whiny Willies, depressing Darnels, and ahh!"
"What are you talking about?" Jade complained.
"When you kids started this class, you were all bright tailed and bushy eyed, hungry to learn about being performers, now you don't wanna do nothing. I might as well just quit!" Sikowitz huffed and strode towards the door.
"Don't quit!" Tori begged. "What do you want us to do?"
"Be more open minded!" Sikowitz exclaimed. "You've all gotten so good at saying no. I dare you, to spend the rest of this day... saying yes." He challenged.
"To everything?" Cat asked in shock.
"Thats right." Sikowitz confirmed.
"I'm in!" Rex spoke for the first time in a while "Jade, will you kiss me on the mouth?"
Both Beck and Jade glared at Robbie, who shrugged acting as though he had nothing to do with the inappropriate puppet. Beck clenched his knuckles angrily. Normally, he wouldn't have felt quite so strongly, but Jade was almost 9 months pregnant and that comment was just wrong on so many levels.
"Ah ah ah, you don't have to say yes to kissing or anything dangerous or... illegal, but everything else.. just say yes." Sikowitz clarified to the group with a wince. "Will you?"
The class all nodded and agreed to the exercises, all wondering what exactly they were getting themselves into. Suddenly the bell rang and everyone stood up and began to leave.
"Wait! Jade, Beck, Stay for a moment." Sikowitz called the couple back. Beck pulled a reluctant Jade back into the classroom and stood behind her.
"Ok, well I don't want to make this 'awkward' but, since it's your last day," The teacher began. "I know you may think I'm just a wacky old drama teacher, but I really do care about you kids. I wanted to get you a little something before your little something comes along." Sikowitz handed Jade a small parcel wrapped in rainbow coloured paper.
"Sikowitz, you really didn't have to get us a gift." Jade shook her head.
"Ah ah ah, you have to accept it. You can't say no!" The teacher protested, pushing the parcel into the pregnant girl's hands.
"Do you want us to open it now?" Jade asked the teacher, surprised from the unexpected gift.
"Yes." Sikowitz answered simply, sitting down on the edge of the stage and crossing his legs. Jade looked up at Beck, who shrugged and she stepped out of his arms to take a seat opposite their teacher. She tore off the wrapping paper and pulled out a tiny red onesie that had 'I Love Improv' in white writing on the front. Beck and Jade both laughed and Sikowitz beamed at their reaction.
"With having you two for parents, this baby is bound to be a little actress." Sikowitz explained. "And you'll have to bring baby Elsa in to visit. I want to meet this little human so we can start teaching her about acting before she can even walk."
"We will." Beck smiled, stepping forwards and giving the crazy haired teacher a quick hug.
"Thanks Sikowitz." Jade stood up to hug her favourite teacher.
He gave her a gentle pat on the back before adding. "Make sure one of the others lets me know when she's born and that you're doing alright." Sikowitz requested seriously. Jade nodded.
"I'm sure Cat will be raving about it, so I wouldn't worry." Beck joked, wrapping his arm around Jade, who suddenly developed a pale and nervous look on her face.
"Alright, I have to get to the blackbox." He announced. "Good luck, Jade." Sikowitz added before leaving the couple alone in the classroom. Beck watched Jade carefully, unable to read her suddenly sullen expression.
"What's wrong?" Beck asked softly.
"Nothing."Jade closed her eyes and folded her arms across her body.
"Well, that's not true, is it?" Beck pointed out. "Do you feel sick? Do you want to go home?" He asked concerned. Jade shook her head.
"Jade?" Beck said earnestly.
"Something could go wrong. I could die in labor, Elsa could die- Oh my God!" Jade gasped, covering her face with her palm.
"Hey! Woah, woah, sit down. Let's talk about this." Beck directed her back to their seats and encircled her in his arms. "You're going to be fine, and Elsa is a very healthy baby - youknow that. What's brought this on?" He interrogated.
"I don't know." Jade whispered shakily before she shook her head and leaned her forehead on his shoulder.
"It's ok to be scared, but you are not going to die. Don't think like that, ok? You're both going to be fine." Beck reassured her.
Jade nodded, letting him hug her tightly. This wasn't the first time she'd thought about this, but she had never let her feelings come out before. She felt better after a few minutes of resting in Beck's gentle embrace. Despite the temporary calm, it was going to take a lot longer for her adjust to people wishing her good luck and reassuring her that everything would be fine, when in reality no one could really guarantee that.
At the end of the day, Jade was emptying the contents of her locker into her bag. Although she was planning on coming back for lessons at some point, she had no idea when that would be. There was no time planned, other than just to return when she and Elsa were ready to take that step.
Luckily her locker wasn't crowded with belongings, just books, scripts and photographs. It didn't take long until the scissor-decorated locker was empty. Jade closed the door, relieved that she would now be able to completely relax and focus on her baby.
"Hey beautiful!" Beck approached her with a smile and kissed her on the cheek. "How are you feeling?"
"Happy." Jade answered truthfully. "How are you feeling?"
"Content." Beck replied, pushing a strand of her hair behind her ear.
Jade closed her eyes, his touch giving her comfort as she leant her head into his hand. When her eyes flickered open again, Beck instantly recognized that curious deep longing in them and he leaned forward, pressing a soft tender kiss on her lips. It was one of those perfect moments, and time blurred with fantasy as they were totally and completely lost in each other. Unfortunately, they didn't notice someone approaching them until it was far too late.
"Yoga pants again? Your ass has really filled out now, Jade." Ryder smirked, leaning against a nearby locker. Beck pulled away from his girlfriend, wondering if he'd just heard that right.
'Excuse me?' Beck raised his eyebrows in disbelief.
"You heard me! Your woman needs to stop stuffing her face!" Ryder jeered.
"Oh so you're actually that low?" Beck looked at him, disgusted, stepping closer to the senior.
"Beck." Jade tried to pull him back.
"No, he can't talk to you like that! Beck shouted at Ryder angrily.
" I talk to sluts however I like. Are you even sure it's yours?" Ryder taunted. Beck's temper flared as his mouth twisted into an furious snarl and his expression clouded with rage. Before he could make contact with him, he felt Jade's hands grabbing his wrists, stopping him.
"Beck! You know I can't hold you back, please calm down." Jade pleaded in a panicked tone.
"You think you're a big man for saying that?!" He screamed. "What sort of person says that shit to a pregnant woman?" Beck shouted, boiling with fury, all directed towards Ryder.
Ryder merely smirked and once again the tanned teen lunged forwards. Jade caught his arm quickly before he could cause any damage. She desperately looked around the empty corridor for help. To her relief, she spotted Tori and Andre approaching from the library.
"Andre!" She shouted in dire need of someone to stop Beck from knocking Ryder into next week. The couple looked up at the sound of Jade's voice. Andre jumped down the stairs and relieved the pregnant girl from the now furious Beck. Ryder was still stood there, grinning like the fool he was at the situation.
"Bro stop! Just look at Jade, she doesn't want you to do this! Andre reasoned as he held his friend back against the lockers.
"He can't just say crap like that and get away with it!" Beck yelled. "You didn't hear what he said Andre!"
"Violence isn't the answer!" Andre retorted, struggling to hold him back.
"It's not my fault Jade's ass is impossible to miss." Ryder grinned, enjoying how angry Beck was becoming. Tori shook her head in disgust, wondering what she ever saw in him.
"Ryder get out of here! You got your show, now leave!" Jade growled, stepping over to the senior with a death glare.
Ryder smirked then turned away from the group, strolling casually out of the room. Jade turned back to Beck as Andre slowly released his grip on him. Beck's chest was heaving as he took in ragged breaths, his eyes dilated in outrage.
"Please, please calm down. Ryder's an idiot, we just have to ignore him." Jade begged in a calm voice. It was a rarity for Beck to get this angry, so not a single one of them knew how to calm him back down.
"Why are you letting him talk to you like that?!" Beck asked in shock. As far as he'd ever been aware, his girlfriend would never have put up with anyone verbally abusing her like that. He'd never had to step in and defend her because she had always defended herself.
"What did you expect me to do? Beat the living daylights out of him?" Jade inquired, voice dripping in sarcasm. She shook her head. "He's said stuff like this before and I just don't care anymore."
"He's said this stuff before?!" Her boyfriend looked horrified.
"Beck." Jade sighed, pressing her face against his shoulder.
"What did he say?" Beck's voice was a carefully neutral, although hatred bubbled dangerously below the surface.
"You don't need to know."
"Jade, tell me what he said!" Beck looked like he was about to burst with bottled outrage and Jade stepped away from him cautiously.
"He just said some stuff about my weight, but Beck, please just forget about it." Beck looked like he was about to protest but Tori interrupted.
"This is stressing her out, Beck. Just do as she says." Tori reprimanded sternly. Beck exhaled, reluctant to cause Jade any extra stress, but he was still completely furious. After some consideration, he decided the best thing to do was to remove himself from the situation.
"Babe I'm sorry, I'll see you back at ours." Beck apologized and placed a quick kiss on Jade's temple before striding out the building. The remaining three friends watched anxiously as he walked away; he was obviously still angry. Jade looked down, obviosly upset, and Tori put her arm around her heavily pregnant friend supportively.
"I'm gonna follow him, make sure he's alright. He probably just needs to get it out of his system." Andre reassured them before jogging out of the school after Beck.
"Boys." Tori shook her head, attempting to lighten the situation. "Are you alright?" Tori asked sympathetically. Jade sighed and then gave a resigned shrug.
"Today has been... exhausting.' Jade confessed, thinking back over her unlucky day.
"Aw, sweetie." Tori pulled her into a hug.
"Sweetie?! Are you kidding me?" Jade acted disgusted. Tori just laughed.
"Hey, do you wanna come back to my place? We can invite Cat and have a girl's night?" Tori suggested.
"I don't know..." Jade sighed, trying to gage how tired she felt.
"Come on! You need some girl time. Plus, you haven't forgotten about Sikowitz challenge, have you?" Tori reminded her. She had to say yes.
"Fine! Yes, I'll go." Jade rolled her eyes, thinking it might actually be nice to have a distraction from everything that happened between Beck and Ryder. The two girls found Cat playing in the Asphalt cafe before climbing into Jade's car and making their way over to the Vega household.
"Bro," Andre said, placing a hand on Beck's shoulder. He'd been looking for his best friend for twenty minutes before he found him sat out here, on a wooden bench at the back of the field.
"How could you all just sit back and let him say that to Jade?" Beck asked through gritted teeth as Andre took a seat next to him on the bench.
"It was literally only one time. She hadn't even told anyone about the pregnancy yet, so there wasn't much we could say. But you know Jade doesn't take anything he says to heart. She hates the guy." Andre reasoned.
"That doesn't make it ok." He retorted, "She shouldn't have to put up with that sort of shit from anyone, especially now. I actually feel sick that she's been dealing with someone saying that to her." Beck rubbed his temples frustrated.
'I get why you're mad. I would be too.' Andre agreed with him
"Then why won't you let me knock him senseless?" Beck yelled angrily.
"Because thats not who you are. You're better than that." Andre replied calmly, abate feeling slighty cliche. "Not to mention you're about to become a father. Violence a few weeks before Elsa's born definitely is not what Jade needs."
Beck sighed. He knew in his heart Andre was right, but it did nothing help him feel any less angry. More than that, he blamed himself. He stared into the distance and couldn't but help feel explicably dissatisfied with the whole situation.
"I just can't believe I let it happen." Beck shook his head.
"What do you mean?" Andre frowned in confusion.
"If I'd been here and not shooting the movie, then I could have protected her from it!" Beck kicked a rock frustratedly across the path.
"You still feel like you shouldn't have gone?" Andre sighed, equally frustrated.
"I knew after the first month that I shouldn't have gone, but by then it was too late to pull out of the contract. I had to listen to her on the phone, pretending not to cry so many times. I was helpless to do anything for her!" Beck shook his head at the memory
"That's rough." Andre agreed.
"And the only thing keeping me going was I was sure she was ok here. But it turns out, of all people, her math teacher was the one giving her a hard time about the pregnancy and now there's this shit with Ryder. Worst of all, she's not fighting back, she's just taking it!"
"Beck, you need to understand, she's not just taking it. Whether she's doing it intentionally or not, she's protecting Elsa. She's not the same person she was before she got pregnant. Think about it this way, if you were holding Elsa in your arms right now, would you get into a fight and risk her getting hurt?"
"No, of course not!" Beck retorted before he realized Andre's point. Jade was different now and that was ok; he still loved the less violent Jade. He just didn't like that it made her so vulnerable to people.
After an evening back at Tori's, Jade's mood significantly improved. She actually really liked being at Tori's now that they were friends. After living there for months, the place felt sort of like home. They ended up making homemade pizza and just relaxing in Tori's bedroom listening to music and talking. Around 10pm, Jade and Cat left Tori's and began the drive home. When they arrived back at the apartment, they were surprised to find Beck, Robbie and Andre involved in some sort of tournament on the xbox in the living room. Jade raised an eyebrow at the mess of empty pizza boxes they had made, and folded her arms.
"You three better promise me this room will be tidy and those boxes will be gone by the time I come back downstairs." Jade said warningly.
"Yes ma'am." Robbie saluted nerdishly and Jade shook her head, making her way upstairs. Beck paused the game and quickly began to gather the boxes and other bits of rubbish that were on the floor.
"Andre, would you mind just getting the dustpan and getting those crumbs?" Beck asked, putting the boxes in the recycling. Andre laughed at Beck's request before stopping to realizing he wasn't kidding.
"Beck, it's really not that messy." Andre said seriously.
"I know, but come on please? I need to make it up to her about before." Andre rolled his eyes and grabbed the dustpan and brush to start sweeping. Once they'd finished, Beck unpaused the game and they got straight back into it. Jade came downstairs in her pyjamas ten minutes later and smiled approvingly at the now spotless room and sat next to Beck on the sofa.
"Is this boys night or am I allowed to stay?"Jade asked teasingly.
"Nah, I think you can stay." Beck turned and pecked her lightly on the lips.
"Good, because I don't think I'll be moving my fat ass from this couch for a while." Jade replied. Beck gave her a stern look and she rolled her eyes. "I'm kidding." she said, snuggling up closer to him. Beck took his hand off the control to wrap his arm around her.
"Beck! You just made us lose!" Robbie cried indignantly as Beck lost control over his player.
"Sorry."Beck replied, not really caring about the game anymore, just staring longingly at Jade. The pale girl felt his eyes on her and looked up at him curiously. His dark brown eyes softened as they gazed at each other.
"Alright! I think we should go." Andre clapped his hands together and stood up. Beck finally drew his eyes away from Jade as their friends grabbed their stuff.
"Sorry, you don't have to leave." Beck protested.
"Nah, it's ok. My grandma is probably freaking out about where I am by now, to be honest." Andre laughed before adding. "Seriously, she's probably hiding under the bed."
Beck stood up and gave Andre a quick hug "Thanks for before."
"No problem." Andre gave his best friend a quick pat on the back, before noticing Jade was attempting to stand up.
"Hey, don't get up. We'll come down to you." Andre smiled as Jade rolled her eyes. He gave the pregnant girl a big cuddle as she continued to insist she hated hugs. Once everyone had said goodbye, Beck let the two guys out, then returned to the living area.
"I'm glad you've calmed down. Being angry doesn't suit you." Jade said as Beck reclaimed his seat on the couch next to her.
"Sorry, I just couldn't deal with him talking to you like that." Beck sighed remorsefully.
"Well, I don't go to school anymore." Jade placed her hand on her stomach as Elsa started to kick. "So it's not like I'm going to see him around anymore anyway."
Beck sighed, thinking long and hard about everything he and Andre had talked about before and then what Jade had said just then. They were both right. Getting into a fight with Ryder would have just been stupid.
"I love you." Beck said after a long minute of silence.
"I love you too." Jade replied smiling a little. Beck swooped down and captured her lips. His tongue traced her soft, full lips as they engaged in a series of slow, shivery kisses. Jade pushed herself up until she was comfortably on top of him and directed his hands under her shirt to her breasts. He caressed her body, feeling more and more like the luckiest guy in the world as he indulged listening to Jades soft moans. They were so consumed in what they were doing that it took them a few seconds to register the sound of Cat's bedroom door unlocking.
Quickly, Jade pushed Beck's hands out of her top and pulled away from his body. Both of them were panting heavily as Cat skipped over to the sink to grab a glass of water. They had completely forgotten she was here.
"Night-night guys!" Cat said after only a minute of being in the same room with the couple as she walked back to her bedroom, completely oblivious that she'd walked in on anything.
"Goodnight Cat!" Beck glanced slyly in Jade's direction as she grinned mischievously at him. Both of them knew if Cat had decided to leave her room just a few minutes later, she would have walked in on something much worse.
"Bed?" Jade suggested seductively. Beck pressed a final intimate kiss on her lips before helping her up off the couch. After all the stress of the day, it was nice that they could end it like this: together, loving and happy.
