Chapter 4: Maybe You're The One That Saved Me
"Come with me," Aang whispered into Katara's ear. Katara looked at Aang and nodded as Aang took her hand and led her away from the party. Katara followed Aang outside to the Garden. Aang didn't at all give any clue as to where they were going, but Katara trusted him with her life, so she followed. Aang guided her to the back of the garden, vines and bushes covered the walls to the Palace Garden.
"Aang? Why are we-" Katara started before looking back at Aang, who was pushing some bushes away from the wall to show a pathway. Katara stared in awe as Aang put a hand out to her, "Ready?"
Katara looked at him silently, with wonder, before nodding and taking his hand as he guided her down. Aang lit a small fire in his other hand as they walked down the cold halls.
They walked for at least half an hour, the walk completely silent, before they started to hear water. Aang stopped, the light in his hand going out and took a blindfold out of his pocket.
"I want it to be a surprise," Aang said.
Katara nodded and let Aang tie the blindfold onto her head. Aang took her hand again and lead her into a well-lit underground room with a running waterfall. Aang placed Katara in the middle of the room and started to untie her blindfold.
"Before I fully take off the blindfold…I want you to know that I love you." Aang kissed her neck and took off the blindfold.
Katara looked around and held her breath.
"Oh my god…Aang!" Katara smiled as she looked around at the room they were in. The underground room had a large waterfall, lit candles around the room, a blanket on the floor with another blanket next to it in front of the waterfall with a basket on the blanket, two glasses and a bottle full of champagne. Katara put a hand up to her mouth and looked over at Aang.
Aang smiled and pointed upward towards the roof. Katara looked up and felt tears prick her eyes. The moon shone brightly through the open ceiling, which was at least 100 feet above them.
"Aang…I…" She looked over at Aang with a huge smile on her face. She ran over to him and hugged him. He smiled and held her as she silently cried.
"Aang, this is...this is..." Katara smiled and laughed, hugging Aang tighter.
Aang's smile only grew bigger as Katara held onto him, "Well, this is a special day for you."
"Turning twenty-four isn't that big a deal, Aang," Katara laughed and pulled away to look at him. She kissed him before he picked her up bridal style and laid her down on the blanket. Aang sat next to her and pulled out a small cake with Katara's name on it.
"Aang," Katara touched her chest and smiled at him.
"Only the best for my forever girl," Aang smiled his toothy grin.
Katara and Aang sat eating cake, drinking champagne, and talking.
"Thank you, Aang." Katara said, looking up at him.
"What for?" Aang asked, looking down at her.
"Everything. The adventure. The excitement. The love. Aang, you have meant everything to me since the first time I saw you. I always believed in you, but the more time I spent with you, I knew you were going to make an amazing Avatar…and an amazing person. You saved me." Katara blushed a little.
Aang couldn't help but blush a little too, "Katara…I can't put into words how much you have meant to me these past ten years…but I'm going to try." Aang's hand went into his pocket as he clutched onto the necklace.
"Katara, I-uhh…I…uhh," Aang put a hand over his face to cover his blush, "This is harder than I expected."
Katara looked at Aang and put a hand on his arm, "What's wrong, Sweetie?"
Aang looked at Katara and took her hand into his, "Katara…It's been ten years, two-hundred fifty days since you broke me out of the iceberg. You have given me a life I could only dream about. You helped me realize I can't back down from my duty as Avatar, my duty to the world…and my duty to you, Katara."
Katara looked at Aang, is he doing what I think he's doing?
"Katara, I love you. I can't imagine my life without you at this point…and….that is why I'm asking if you will have me as your husband," Aang took out the betrothal necklace and showed it to Katara, "Katara, will you marry me?"
Katara looked at the betrothal necklace than back at Aang. She stayed silent, looking at the betrothal necklace. Aang looked down at the betrothal necklace then back at her face. He was worried now.
What if she is trying to think of a way to say no? Or she is now thinking that she has to break up with me? or...or!
"I…oh god, Aang! Yes!" Katara jumped on top of him and passionately kissed him. Aang smiled into the kiss and wrapped an arm around her back and the other moved into her hair.
"More Champagne, Sweetie?" Aang asked, picking up the bottle. Katara smiled and nodded, holding up her glass for him. Aang poured more into her glass and set the bottle back down. He turned onto his side and leaned his head onto his hand.
Katara did the same, but facing him, "So, when do you think we should go back?"
Aang shrugged, "I promised you alone time, remember?"
"I know…but I really want to tell everyone about our engagement." Katara blushed as she sipped at her drink.
Aang smirked and wiggled his eyebrows, "We can always sneak out after everyone's asleep and come back."
Katara laughed and pushed on Aang's shoulder lightly, "Aang! Seriously! After this cup, we go back to the Palace and brag about our engagement."
Aang nodded and smiled, "Alright. Hurry up and finish your drink then."
Katara and Aang walked out of the underground tunnel, holding hands. They quickly moved the bushes back to the right place and ran to the party.
Aang kissed Katara before they walked back into the party, calmly and smoothly.
"Okay, how do you want to do this?" Aang asked.
Katara smiled, "I have an idea."
"What idea is-" Aang already saw Katara running to an empty table, "Oh boy."
Katara ran to an empty table and jumped on it, "Hey! Everyone! I'm engaged to Aang!"
Everyone was silent for a few seconds before cheer's erupted and some people yelling 'Finally!'
Aang shook his head and felt a hard smack on his back, "Ouch."
"I would have thought of you asking her sooner," Hakoda said.
Aang smiled sheepishly, "Yeah, well, I'm not that great with right moments."
Hakoda looked at him and smiled, "No, I think you're perfect with them."
Aang and Katara were too exhausted at the end of the party to sneak back off to their secret oasis. As the couple got ready for bed, Aang saw Katara in the bathroom staring at the betrothal necklace he made for her. He couldn't help but smile too. He was finally going to marry the girl he's been in love with since he got out of that damned iceberg. Katara clipped the necklace back around her neck and crawled into bed next to Aang.
Katara rested her head on his chest, "Goodnight, Sweetie." Aang kissed the top of Katara's head, "And Katara?"
"Hmm?" Katara mumbled, falling asleep.
"Just for the record," Aang said as he wrapped his arms around Katara, "You're the one that saved me."
