Author's Note: I am so so so so so sick and so so so so so bored, so I thought I might as well update even though it kind of hurts looking at my computer screen for too long.
Chapter Thirty-Two
Spencer sat anxiously in the office of her OB/GYN with Hanna. They had been waiting only about ten minutes for the result of the urine pregnancy test, but it might as well have been hours.
Finally, they heard the door open and both snapped up from their respective ways of calming their nerves.
"Well, you're definitely not pregnant," the doctor announced.
Spencer let out a tiny sigh of relief, but part of her wondered if this was what she really wanted. Hanna just looked over at her friend.
"Was that the answer you wanted?" she asked.
Spencer shrugged. She didn't know what the answer was at the moment.
The first five minutes of the car ride back to Spencer's apartment were dead silence. Finally, Hanna broke the silence.
"Are you getting cold feet, Spencer?" she inquired nervously.
Spencer sighed. "I don't think so," she said. Her voice was still laced in uncertainty.
"Okay, Toby is not Andrew, Spence. He isn't going to betray you. Is that why you're so on-edge?"
The brunette just shook her head. "No, not really. I just don't really know how to feel about not being pregnant. On one hand, I'm relieved. It gives me and Toby more time to be a couple before we turn into a family, but…"
"…But you still want the family," Hanna finished for her friend. "It's okay to want a family, Spencer. You don't have to want it all now. If it were me, I'd wait until maybe one or two years into being married before trying to have any kids. What's the rush? You're not even thirty yet, Spencer."
Spencer thought about it for a minute before nodding. "You know what, Hanna? You're right. I should just enjoy not being a mother for now."
"Yeah, and maybe you're just feeling this way because you see Tiffany and Shane and they look all happy and everything. Maybe you just have Baby Fever or something," Hanna suggested. "After all, weren't you the one who told me you weren't ready?"
"Yeah, I guess."
"For now, just enjoy the alone time you have with Toby. And besides, wouldn't you rather keep your little midnight romps secretive?"
"Obviously, they're not that secretive if you know about them."
Hanna rolled her eyes. "You know what I mean. For now, practice baby-making must be a lot more thrilling for you than actual baby-making," she teased.
Spencer shrugged.
Spencer led Hanna into the room with the blue walls and her own personal impressionistic paintings.
"Is it just me, or is something different about this room?" Spencer asked as she looked around.
"God, Spencer. I don't know! I don't take inventory in your paintings or whatever. Shouldn't you be doing that?" the blonde asked.
Spencer pouted. "Something about these paintings is rubbing me the wrong way. I know something's off."
"If you ask me, your OCD is acting up and you should probably go back on the pill," Hanna said before exiting the room.
"What pill?"
"I don't know! Xanax or horse tranquilizers or whatever it is that makes you chill out? Like, I really thought you had ADD or ADHD when I met you. All of this stress is not going to be kind to your skin or your hair or eyes or anything for that matter. You're getting married in less than two weeks and the last thing you need is to break out from stress. Just relax," Hanna said before taking a sip of wine.
Spencer was about to dispute with that comment, but the door opened before she got the chance to. Caleb and Toby walked into the apartment.
"Hey," Toby said to both of them before kissing Spencer on the cheek. "Where were the both of you all day? We tried calling you like ten times," he added.
"Hey, Toby? Don't go all Spencer on your girlfriend. Being paranoid and clingy when she feels like it is her thing," Hanna quipped.
Spencer rolled her eyes and turned to Toby and Caleb. "What happened?"
"Tiffany had the baby," Caleb finally announced.
Both Hanna and Spencer were taken by surprise.
Spencer was the first to speak. "Really? Did you guys just go to see her?"
Caleb shook his head. "No. Shane told us that she's in a lot of pain right now and doesn't really want to see anyone, but she'll be out of the hospital by next week and she'll be fine by the wedding, he hopes."
Spencer furrowed her eyebrows in concern. "Next week? Don't they usually discharge mothers after like two or three days? What happened?"
"She started bleeding a lot. The doctors said something happened to her placenta—"
"Placental abruption?" Spencer interrupted. "It's something that causes a woman to bleed a lot and it can be really serious," she elaborated.
Toby gave Spencer an odd look before going on. "Shane didn't tell us everything, but we just know he's pretty worried and kind of wanted some space," Toby answered. "I think he said they might need to give her a blood transfusion or something, so I guess it's serious."
"Oh my God," Hanna uttered in shock.
Spencer frowned. "Do you think he'll be okay to talk later?"
"Maybe not, but I'm sure Tiffany will. And at this point, it doesn't look like Shane is planning on leaving her side for the time being," Toby added.
Spencer lay in bed with her black silky robe on. She grabbed her phone off the bedside table to call Shane.
"Hello?"
She winced. "Shane, you sound exhausted. Are you at the hospital?" Spencer asked gently. Toby, who had gotten out of the shower about ten minutes prior, walked in and slid next to Spencer. He immediately took interest in this conversation. Spencer quickly brought the phone away from her ear and put it on speaker so he could hear.
"Yeah, I'm here. Tiffany is right next to me."
They both heard faint mumbling on Shane's end of the line, with Shane responding something they couldn't quite make out.
"She…she wants to talk to you," he said finally.
"Hey, Spencer," Tiffany said. She sounded like her old self, but with a bit less energy.
"Hey, Tiffany. Are you feeling okay?" Spencer inquired nervously.
She scoffed. "Yes. I promise, I'm fine. Just because my name is Tiffany doesn't mean that I'm made of glass…contrary to what my husband thinks," she insisted. "Whatever lies he told you to make you pity me, I'm sure they aren't true."
"So you didn't need a blood transfusion?" Spencer asked.
"No. Though, the doctor did look like he was wearing a lot of blood after delivering the baby," she commented.
"How is the baby?" Toby asked finally.
Tiffany gave a small sigh of happiness. "She is doing perfectly fine. They had to take her to the NICU because they thought there may have been some complications or an infection, but the doctor told me that she's doing well and there was absolutely nothing wrong with her."
Spencer couldn't help but smile at the happiness in Tiffany's voice. "So it's a girl then? Did you name her yet?" she asked excitedly.
"No, not yet. She's supposed to get out of the NICU in a little bit and then we can name her. And don't listen to Shane; the doctor said that I look fine and should be discharged within two days; three at the very most," she promised.
Spencer looked at the calendar as she got ready to go to bed. There was only one week left before she got married.
She heard the door open outside. Still, she was frozen in place. She had a lot on her mind lately.
Toby walked into the room.
"Can we talk?" she asked quietly.
He nodded, sitting down on their bed. Spencer got up and sat down next to him. Her heartbeat quickened the more she thought about what she was about to say.
"I wanted to talk to you a little bit about the future now," she announced. When he didn't answer, she continued. "It's just…with Tiffany and Aria being pregnant and having children, I kind of wanted to know how you felt about it. If that's something you're interested in…pets…all of that."
He gave her a relieved smile. "Spencer…I want everything with you. Kids, a cat, a dog. I don't know how soon I want all of that, but I want it all with you," he told her.
She smiled. "Really?"
He nodded.
She was relieved. "I think maybe we should get a pet before we have a baby. As practice, I guess."
He laughed before giving her a kiss.
Spencer stirred her coffee about fifty times. She had nothing left to nitpick when it came to the wedding. She looked up at Toby.
"Were you serious last night about the pets and the kid talk?" she asked.
"I meant every word. Do you want a cat or a dog?"
She bit her lip, like this was the hardest question in the world. "I don't know. They're both so cute. I always wanted to adopt a shelter animal, so…I like the idea of both. What about you?" she asked quickly, to take the attention off of herself.
"I like both. I think a cat might be easier at first. And cats are less prone to interrupting our time than dogs," he said with a small smile before pouring his own coffee.
She smiled and nodded in agreement. "Point taken. Maybe we could go to a shelter after we come back from Bora Bora!" she suggested, her deep brown eyes lighting up in excitement.
"That sounds like a great idea, Spence."
"I hope they have a kitten there," she thought aloud.
Addictedtospoby: Did I really call you a bitch? I'm sorry, I'm very delirious. I feel horrible so I don't remember what I had for dinner last night. If I did WOW I don't know what I was thinking but I'm glad you liked it and I missed you.
AL3110: Okay, so I might cry when I get those grades back because I might've bombed them both :X
vondydora:Well, I guess you got your answer. It's not in the cards for them right now, but maybe sometime soon :) This might sound really weird but SPENCER LOOKS SO HOT in the new episode. Really, she looks gorgeous, as does Sasha and Ashley (I didn't see Shay or Lucy in any of the pictures). And...you know...there's a lot of Keegan, so needless to say, I'm really excited for this episode. That sucks, but I think my Latin teacher actually likes me since I actually show up to class and have half the brain to look into the text book when I don't know the answer in class. And I also get like an A+ on all the tests (on the last one, I got 103).
Guest:Thank you very much! I hope you liked this one.
Guest:There's one more chapter and an epilogue (sad, it's ending soon D:)
Guest:Sorry if I broke your heart! But I'm sure that Toby would be really happy if they did turn out to be pregnant sometime in the near or distant future. I think he'd be really great with kids.
Sylviecake231: Close, but not quite! I hope you like them! I really love all of her songs (I have like 96 of her songs and demos on my phone). She's supposed to come out with a new album this year which makes me so excited. Sorry. I'm Diamond-ranting right now. Ugh, what is with everyone being sick? You're like the third person I've talked to online who's sick! And me, too! I found out I might have bronchitis today (but I've had it before, and it was like waaaay worse last time).
eveningshades1107: I know, right?! Like, what's the point of bio? I don't care how a cell divides or makes ATP or breathes. Like, I don't care, my teacher could honestly not care less, nobody else cares...what's the point? At least in Chemistry, we could make stuff blow up. That's always kind of cool. My uncle's Chem teacher in high school worked on Project Manhattan and took out a huge chunk of one of those really fat blacktops they use in science labs. And it was in one of his class experiments. If we did that, that would be entertaining (though, this kid in my group did set stuff on fire when we were trying to make Jell-O). I love calling Hanna (even AU Hanna) Hanna Banana! I might squeeze in Pookie Bear (maybe a disgustingly cute nickname Jason has given Aria? Hmm...) sometime in the future, but I don't know yet. And may I just say I find it funny you dislike children so much since you were in a production of Annie (right? I think I remember you were in Annie. Points for the delirium-ridden Kayson!). I actually don't like Chinese, but everyone else seems to like it, so I'm like, "What would Spencer and Hanna eat? For Hanna, Chinese, because she'd have a good time trying to pronounce the stuff on the menu."
Vexrll:Enzymes really aren't like steroids and I'm in biology, too. I was making an analogy. I'm the enzyme. Anyway, thanks for reading.
Guest:Thank you so much!
I don't know why, but I feel like I should be a little bit suspicious of this sudden influx of Guest reviews, but I'm glad to see you guys anyway! I love all my readers! They're all so cool.
Okay, so like I said before, I'm actually pretty sick with bronchitis. I don't even want to relive how horrible I felt those first few days...shudder.
I'm going to go listen to Lana Del Rey in peace and try and come up with some ideas, so don't leave the review box hanging. I don't care if it's one word: good, or a different word: ew. Like, it doesn't matter. I just love hearing from people (though an elaboration is always nice, and I love answering questions [so you guys can leave me a question if you've got one burning in your mind]).
I'm gonna go melt my brain with some more Dance Moms and wish I was that flexible. Bye! -Kayson
Oh, yeah, and of course, 10 reviews=update! -Not Kayson
And also, the next chapter is like nine pages long on word, if that's any motivation (this one was only like six pages). Okay, bye. -Selena (or if you're Nicki Minaj) Selener
