Author's Note: I'm trying to hold it all in until the second author's note. I'm going to respond to the reviews first. Sob.
Guest: Normally, I'd say that you should be on your toes, but I didn't have anything planned. If there's a threequel, however...maybe they'll make a cameo? Not sure.
Guest: Thank you! Pandora is such a cute kitten. I just feel kind of warm and fuzzy just thinking of Pandora. I'll keep your opinion in consideration (though it would be extremely helpful if you remind me again after this chapter, so I can look at all the people who want two stories and all the people who want three in perspective).
Addictedtospoby:Hey, I have a dog! I love my dog so much. She was acting so goofy today. She just kept running around and stuff. Anyway, let me get over Rosa. I'm just glad to have you back. I've missed you and your very random comments.
AL3110:Yes, I'm sure any girl would be willing to date Spencer and Toby's son if he was as beautiful as Spencer and Toby.
mickeymack16:My joke was that their cat acts kind of like a dog. And I actually took care of my uncle's cat for a while. I guess she was a little weird. She'd stretch in the morning when she got up, but she'd kind of walk around in a circle before lying down. Thanks for the feedback, anyway! I hope you liked Tiffany (and Shane and everyone else) in this chapter.
mrs-cavanaugh:I'm really glad you thought it was cute.
eveningshades1107: I...hmm...well, now that you put it like that, I can see what you're saying. Pandora Cat Cavanaugh is my new favorite character in the story. But Cassidy and Chlobird are still really cute. Oh, isn't "Dance: 10, Looks: 3" that song that was originally called "Tits and Ass" and then "T&A" until the producers/directors decided that was too obvious and it made the whole song less comedic, so they changed the name? I think I remember that. By the way, as an update on Merrick house, we're in 1st place, ahead of 2nd place by about 150+ points, so we're pretty much shoo-ins for the house cup. There's only like three competitions left (I know there's March Madness and another SAC day, but I'm sure there's something else in between, plus an extra house GPA thing, I'm sure, but my house has the highest GPA).
vondydora: I just think that Pandora is a really pretty name, so I decided, "Why not use it?" And thank you, so, so, so much for your committed support. It really, truly, sincerely means more to me than words could ever really describe.
Guest:I will keep that in mind!
Epilogue
Spencer woke up before the sunrise. It was still dark outside.
She opened her eyes to see Toby sleeping. She had grown so accustomed to his face being there when she woke up. She just knew she'd never tire of it. She touched the side of his face gently and longingly, careful not to wake him.
Suddenly, she shot up. She remembered what day it was.
She was getting married today.
Toby woke up. He realized he was alone in bed.
"Spencer?" he called out, expecting her to walk out of the closet or walk into the room from the hallway.
Then, he realized, it was the day of the wedding. She had probably left a long time ago in order to avoid seeing him before the wedding.
He shook his head thinking of her superstitions. It was only when he rolled over that he noticed a note from Spencer in her place on the bed. Toby picked it up and read it. In purple ink and in Spencer's perfect handwriting read—
Toby—
Meet me at the altar at 5 PM, sharp. I feel like I've been missing being your wife all this time. I can't wait until I finally am.
He didn't even look for her name at the bottom of the note. He just grinned like an idiot. It wasn't until he finally put the letter down that he realized he had a different roommate on the bed with him.
Pandora looked up at him with identical blue eyes. She meowed, sitting down on Spencer's pillow, as if she was asking, "Where did she go?"
"Spencer isn't here. You'll see her in like ten days, Pandora."
Pandora rolled onto her back and meowed again.
"She'll be the same, I promise," he said before rubbing the kitten's stomach. "She'll just be my wife," he added quietly.
"Aren't you even a little upset about this, Spencer?" Hanna asked as she looked out the window of the hotel they were getting ready at.
Outside, the sky was a dim grey color. It was raining, and it didn't look like it was about to lighten up.
Spencer just shrugged as she drank some tea. She had about twenty more minutes before she needed to begin getting ready.
Emily walked into the room a moment later with food from the café in the hotel lobby. Aria, Cassidy, and Tiffany (and Chloe, for that matter) were going to be coming soon. They were just enjoying twenty minutes of peace before the madness started up.
"So you guys saw the reception hall this morning?" Spencer asked.
Hanna nodded. "It looks amazing. Of course, going outside is sort of out of the question, considering this stupid rain," Hanna huffed. "The inside is still gorgeous. It's exactly how I planned everything. It'll look even more gorgeous with the lights and at night."
Spencer nodded whilst taking a deep breath. For some reason, today, she felt calmer and more poised. It was a paradox when one took into account just how hectic everything really was.
Hanna was just about to finish Spencer's makeup when Tiffany walked into the room with Chloe sleeping. Hanna added the final dash of lip gloss as Tiffany entered the bathroom where Spencer was getting prepped.
"Wow, you look amazing, Spencer," Tiffany said, taking into account Spencer's elegant up-do. It wasn't as anal as it sounded, though. Some strands hung from the bun at the back of her head. Hanna knew it would look even more gorgeous with the simple veil covering it.
"Thank you, Tiffany. Where's Chloe?" Spencer asked as she curiously watched Hanna put some bronzer on her shoulders and chest. "What are you doing, Hanna?" she asked.
"What? I'm giving Toby a gift: the illusion that you have cleavage for days," Hanna said with a slight eye-roll. "Just trust me on this, Spencer. I'm like the makeup plastic surgeon."
Spencer shook her head, but just went along with whatever Hanna had to say. She did, after all, have the ability to poke Spencer's eye out when fixing her eye makeup.
"Are we going to be ready to dress her soon?" Aria asked as she fixed Cassidy's tiny curls.
"I don't think Spencer should get dressed for another half hour, at least. I don't want anything happening to the dress," Hanna said protectively.
Tiffany and Hanna let the train of the dress flutter onto the ground as they put it on Spencer's small frame. Aria and Emily looked happily. They were all in their dresses already. Spencer was the last to get dressed.
Cassidy, across the room, stopped in her tracks. "Auntie…" she began before trailing off.
"How does Auntie Spencer look? Doesn't she look beautiful, Cass?" Aria asked.
Cassidy just nodded.
Hanna bit her lip, trying to contain her excitement. She remember looking at this very same dress months ago, envisioning Spencer as the bride wearing it. She looked even more amazing in real life than she did in Hanna's vision.
"You look amazing, Spencer," Emily commented as Hanna walked into the kitchenette to get Spencer's bouquet.
Aria handed Spencer the bouquet of twelve red, perfect roses. Spencer smiled as she looked at them. "I love these flowers so much," she said.
"Well…I know you're kind of a minimalist, so that seemed like the perfect choice. Plus, I know you like roses and the color scheme was black, white, and red; all the classics," Hanna said before wiping a small tear from the bottom of her eye.
"Are you crying, Hanna?" Emily asked as she held her own bouquet, which was made up of six pure white roses.
Hanna shook her head profusely. "No, no! I'm just…I'm sweating from my eyes," she insisted.
"Stop it. I'm sure I don't look that great…" Spencer said with a slight blush on her cheeks.
"You look amazing, okay?" Tiffany said abruptly.
Spencer raised her eyebrow. "I look amazing? You should look at yourself in the mirror, Tiffany. For someone who had a baby like a week ago, you look incredible."
"I haven't eaten in like a week to make sure I fit into this dress," she said as she examined her bouquet.
"Emily, Aria, make sure she eats," Spencer said.
"I'll do it. Aria has enough with her bumblebee," Emily said as she watched Aria run after Cassidy.
Spencer smiled as she looked at the two of them. She thought that would be her with her daughter one day.
Tiffany slipped into the room quietly. She needed to see her friend, just as he had seen her on her wedding day.
"Hey," she said quietly when she saw him sitting on his bed.
"Hey, Tiff," he answered weakly.
"What's wrong?" Tiffany asked as she sat next to him.
"Your dress looks pretty," he said before getting up and beginning to pace. He felt so nervous; he didn't know what to do with himself.
"Hey, don't avoid my question. What's wrong?" she repeated.
He stopped mid-step for a moment. Then, he continued to walk. "I don't know what to do. What if this is a bad idea?"
Tiffany wasn't amused. She watched as he paced back and forth. "Toby, you asked Spencer to marry you, yes or no?" she inquired, like she was reading it from a script.
"We're not playing 20 questions right now, are we?" he asked.
Tiffany sighed and rolled her eyes. "Just answer the question, goofball."
Toby sighed as he stopped to look at her. "Yes."
"Okay, and she said yes, right?"
"Yes."
"And you love her, right?" she inquired.
He sighed. "With everything I have and more."
She nodded. "You need to go out and marry that girl."
Toby let out one more sigh before sitting down on the bed next to Tiffany.
Tiffany piped up. "Are your parents coming today?" she asked.
Toby shrugged. "They never answered Spencer's invitation, so I'll take it as a no," he said glumly.
"That's their loss. I guess they won't get to see how much you two love each other. Really, your love lights up the room," Tiffany told him.
Toby smiled at her. Finally, he got up.
"Okay. I think I'm ready."
Spencer stared out the window at the rain. She still couldn't help but feel hopeful. Those high hopes she had as a little girl, getting married to Prince Charming…they were finally coming true.
Hanna walked up to her with her red dress trailing behind. "Aria told me that the limo is going to be here in a few minutes. She's waiting downstairs with Cassidy and Emily. Tiffany left with Chloe a while ago. She wanted to see Toby before the wedding."
Spencer nodded dismissively.
"Are you getting cold feet?" Hanna asked nervously.
Spencer finally looked at Hanna. "No, of course not."
Hanna sighed. "Good."
Spencer looked at Hanna. She had a small white flower in her hair. The red chiffon hung beautifully on her slender frame. "You look pretty."
"Well, nobody's going to be looking at me," Hanna responded. Spencer rolled her eyes.
"You know I only care about one person." Hanna didn't really need to be reminded. "You know…things feel so different from how they were a few days ago. It didn't feel like anything so serious yesterday. We were just two people in love and that was it. But now…it just feels like everything has changed," she said.
"Everything has changed. I mean, since the two of you met…it's like your world has taken a 360 turn. And now, you're taking a huge step in your relationship. You deserve this, Spencer," Hanna said finally.
Spencer nodded. "I guess I do," she admitted.
Hanna smiled. She was about to say something else, but her phone beeped. She looked down and saw it was Aria.
"The limo is here."
Spencer took a final deep breath before sighing and grabbing her bouquet of red roses.
"Okay. I think I'm ready," she said quietly.
Spencer looked down at her phone, expecting some sort of grand text from the heavens or something like that.
Nothing.
"Do you think the guests are there already?" Hanna asked, using every muscle of restraint to keep herself from biting her nails down to the quick.
"If they are, it doesn't really matter. I mean, it's Spencer's day. They're not going to mind if she's like fifteen minutes late," Aria said.
"Hey, it's Toby's day, too," Emily chimed in.
"Toby is a horrible indicator; he could never get annoyed with Spencer," Hanna replied dismissively.
Spencer looked up from her phone, giving Hanna a small glare.
"Spencer, you're the only bride I've ever met who could be so preoccupied with their phone that they're not even stressed out about the wedding," Emily commented.
"Believe me, I want to throw up, but I'm doing my best to conceal it," Spencer answered.
Aria arched an eyebrow. "Are you feeling nauseous from nerves or something else?" she inquired.
Now it was Aria's turn to receive a glare from Spencer. "I'm not pregnant," she stated plainly.
Suddenly, Spencer's phone beeped in her hands.
Where are you?
Spencer bit her lip slightly, but lightly enough not to smudge or ruin any of the cherry red lip stain on her lips.
I'm on my way. We're almost there.
"What are you doing?" Aria asked, interrupting her thoughts.
Spencer looked up, looking like she was caught. Hanna quickly snatched the phone out of her hands.
"Hey!"
Hanna quickly skimmed over the conversation. Her face broke out into a smile when she read the latest text message. She quickly handed the phone back to Spencer.
"Toby said he loves you and he can't wait to get married. We'd better get there because I can't wait any longer for this ceremony. You two are going to kill me with this cuteness," she gushed.
Spencer rolled her eyes with a smile. "Can't you swoon over Jason and Aria or Tiffany and Shane?"
"Not when you're getting married today," Hanna sing-songed.
Things were quiet for a moment more. As Aria saw they were getting closer to the hall, she spoke up. "So how late will we be?" she asked.
"Well, we're going to have to do a final touch up at the church and Spencer's parents wanted to talk to her before she actually walks down the aisle, so…we're running five minutes late now, so maybe…fifteen, twenty minutes?" Hanna guessed.
Spencer felt herself blanch. "What? My parents want to talk to me?"
Hanna nodded. "They left me a message this morning about how they wanted to speak to you. And your sister, too, I think," she added.
Spencer felt herself getting paler by the second.
"You need to calm down," Tiffany said as she watched Toby pace back and forth again. "You told me you were ready."
"But what if she's not?"
"Stop being stupid, Toby," Caleb jumped in.
"I'm not being stupid. I just—"
"You're being absolutely ridiculous," Tiffany confirmed. "She's not getting cold feet! She's not running away!" she exclaimed.
"I'm just nervous."
"Okay, Toby? I was twenty minutes late to my own wedding. Most people are late. Spencer is just running a little bit late."
"Spencer is never late," he answered firmly. "She's never been late to anything."
"Maybe she just wanted to make this day special!" Caleb answered with an undertone of sarcasm.
Toby sighed. "I'm serious. Why would this be the one thing she was late for?" he asked.
Tiffany shrugged. "Listen, you keep thinking about your vows and what you're going to say tonight and tomorrow and every day of the rest of your goddamn lives and stop getting self-conscious about this," Tiffany said before grabbing her bouquet to step outside of the church.
"What's wrong with her?" Toby asked.
Caleb shrugged. "I think she needs an aspirin or a Xanax or something," he answered. "But you need to stop stressing. She'll be here soon. Just…take a couple of minutes and relax, please. I'm going to go find Shane and see if he can calm Tiffany down at all," Caleb said before exiting the room.
Toby sighed. Alone again.
Aria, Emily, and Hanna picked up the train of Spencer's skirt as they raced up the steps of the church. Cassidy trotted along behind them. They quickly ran into a back room at the reception hall.
"Can you go get my parents and Melissa, please?" Spencer asked Aria. Aria nodded before taking off.
Hanna quickly opened her bag to all of the things she would need to touch up Spencer. The first thing she took out was a can of hairspray to keep Spencer's hair in place. Then, she got out the lip stain to reapply the dark, bright red onto her lips.
"You look incredible," Emily commented from the side.
"Thank you," Spencer said quietly.
"Okay, one more thing," Hanna said. She pulled out a glass filled with perfume. It was one of Spencer's favorite scents. It was this rich, fresh floral scent. Hanna sprayed her on the neck, on the chest, and on the shoulders.
"Okay, now you smell like cherry blossoms. I'm sure that as soon as Toby gets a whiff of you and sees you, he'll want nothing more than to—"
"Hanna, let's not describe the honeymoon right now; Spencer's parents and Melissa are coming," Emily warned as she grabbed Hanna's arm and Cassidy and scuttled out of the room. Spencer opened her mouth to object, but they were already gone by the time she thought to make a move.
Spencer just sighed, sitting on the windowsill. Aria quickly opened the door. She walked in with Mr. and Mrs. Hastings and Melissa behind her.
"I guess I'll leave you alone," Aria said before exiting.
Spencer took a deep breath as the door closed quietly.
"You look…"
Spencer braced herself for whatever may have come next.
"You look amazing, Spencer. I can hardly believe it's you," her mother said.
Spencer wondered if it was a real compliment. She didn't really respond.
"I can't believe my baby sister is getting married," Melissa commented. The snide and sarcasm was drained from her voice and replaced with some special kind of kindness. Pregnancy was certainly a good look on Melissa.
"I'm hardly a baby," she retorted.
"You're still our youngest daughter. Now what am I supposed to do?" Mrs. Hastings murmured, probably to herself.
"Hmm…I don't know. Now you can't nag me any longer about getting married. And Melissa is already having your grandchild, so I guess I don't have to worry about that, either," Spencer replied jokingly. J
"I hope you don't have to worry about that," Mr. Hastings began, "or else, I—"
Spencer gave her father a disapproving look. "Daddy," she said, warning him.
"You haven't called me 'Daddy' in such a long time," he added, his voice softer now.
Spencer sighed somewhat sadly. "It feels like the last time I'll get to say it," she revealed softly.
And although the Hastings weren't a family keen on warm and fuzzy moments, there was something extremely special and sentimental about this moment that struck the four of them.
"Who is Chloe going to be with during the ceremony?" Shane asked Tiffany as he watched his wife pace around holding their week-old little girl in her arms.
"Hanna's mom is going to keep an eye on her. As a matter of fact, I should probably go give her to Mrs. Marin right now," Tiffany said as she pushed some of Chloe's light brown hair away from her eyes. Chloe yawned slightly. Tiffany had to smile at her daughter.
"Okay, I really have to bring her or I'm never going to make it before the wedding starts," Tiffany said before she exited the room.
When she left, Shane walked over to Jason, Caleb, and Toby.
"Spencer's here, Toby. I don't know why you're still so nervous," Jason said.
"How do you know?" Caleb asked.
"Cassidy was with them and she already came to find me. She wanted to tell me all about how she was going to cover the aisle with petals or something," Jason explained, smiling just thinking of how cute his own daughter was.
"See? You have nothing to be worried about," Caleb told Toby.
"What if she changes her mind at the last second?"
"She's not going to!"
Emily walked into the room the four of them were conversing in. "We're ready to start if you guys are," she said. Finally, she caught the negative energy in the room. "What's going on?"
"Toby is convinced that Spencer will be a runaway bride," Caleb explained.
"Toby…I'm going to slap you. Stop it. She's in the other room with her bouquet and everything. She's so excited," she reassured him. "We just need to get into place," she added comfortingly.
Spencer took several deep breaths as she scrutinized her bouquet of roses.
"Spencer?" Emily called out as she poked her head into the room Spencer was in. "You can come out," she said, holding the door open for Spencer.
Spencer took another deep breath before nodding and walking out of the door, picking up her train behind her.
Outside, Aria was giving Cassidy a small little pep talk.
"Okay, Cass, you're going to walk down the aisle like it's a little runway. And don't forget to drop a bunch of flower petals from the basket. Auntie Spencer needs them to show her the way to Uncle Toby, remember?" Aria asked.
Cassidy nodded incessantly, her big dirty blonde curls bobbing up and down. "I remember, Mommy," she answered.
"Okay, so you're going to go down there, but don't go to fast. See where Uncle Toby is standing?" Aria asked, pointing towards Toby. "You're going to stand kind of close to him, but off to the side. Daddy and I are going to walk down first, so when I get down there, stand next to me, okay?"
Cassidy nodded again. "I got it Mommy!" she exclaimed.
"You do? Can I have a hug?" Aria asked. Cassidy quickly hugged her and Aria smiled. "Okay, go now, Cass!" Aria prompted as she heard the string quartet begin to play.
Cassidy began to walk at a fair pace. She threw the petals jovially and comically as she made her way down the aisle, stopping near Toby. She pasted a big smile on her face.
"So we're walking down the aisle again?" Jason teased.
Aria rolled her eyes lightheartedly. "Don't make me regret it," she answered with equal jest.
Tiffany took a deep breath as she grabbed onto Shane's arm.
"Chlo Bird is with Hanna's mom, right?" Shane asked.
Tiffany pouted. "Yeah, and I miss her already," she frowned.
"You'll get her back in five minutes. Do you think Mrs. Marin is going to abduct her or something?" Shane joked.
Tiffany looked at him meekly. "You don't think she'd do that, do you?"
"It was a joke, Tiffany."
Tiffany hit him on the arm. "Don't even kid around with Hanna's mom kidnapping my Chlo Bird," she warned.
"Are you two planning on walking anytime soon, or are you going to let Toby die of a heart attack?" Hanna asked, interrupting their conversation. "And my mom would not steal your daughter. She had to deal with me for eighteen years. She's done with children. I promise you," she added.
Tiffany sighed before the two of them walked down.
"You must've been a nightmare," Caleb said as he and Hanna walked up to the door.
"I was. My mother should be a saint just for tolerating me," Hanna replied.
Caleb shook his head. "I don't even want to know what you did in high school," he told her.
"No, you really don't," she teased.
And with that, the two of them walked into the room.
Spencer was alone again.
She felt her heart racing at about a thousand miles per hour. Her heart was ready to leap out of its place in her chest. All she felt in her stomach were butterflies.
But as the door opened and she saw her future husband, she realized that they were the good kind, making her feel better about this whole situation.
She felt herself smile absentmindedly as she started to walk down the aisle.
Hanna sniffled slightly as she watched her best friend walk down the aisle. Spencer looked even more radiant than in all of Hanna's dreams (and nightmares) of how this day would go. All of the months of endless planning and obsessing and stressing were all worth seeing that kind of happiness.
And as Spencerstepped up next to Toby, she knew all those months and all the pain and heartbreak were all worth it. Everything was worth it. She wouldn't change a single thing about how they met, how they got together, or anything they went through together.
Everything had changed since they first met each other. They both experienced pain and heartbreak in ways they never had before. But they also experienced more joy and ecstasy than ever; it was the euphoria of love.
And it all started off so simply.
"Hello," she said quietly.
"Hello."
So I'm about to cry as I type this. It's so sad to see this end.
