Chapter 18

Snowpaw blinked open her sleepy eyes. She let out a large yawn, and sat up in her nest. It was just before dawn, but already the camp was buzzing with activity. Snowpaw started washing her pelt, getting out all of the tangles. She looked around the den for Heatherpaw, since she'd gone to the gathering the night before. Snowpaw saw her golden tabby pelt in her nest, which was right next to Snowpaw's.

"Heatherpaw!"Snowpaw tried to hiss softly.

The she-cat blinked open her sleepy blue eyes."Oh! The gathering!"Heatherpaw sat bolt-upright in her nest, and started to wash her fur."Well, Shadowclan reported a fox, but then they said they killed it, and Riverclan said everything was well and fishing was all good. Mistystar's kits were born; two toms. Their names are Waterkit and Darkkit. Thunderclan said that Acornpaw, Icepaw, Dawnpaw, and Jaypaw became warriors, and now are Acornstep, Icefall, Dawnmist, and Jaysong. And that one of the queens, Embermoon, is expecting kits. That's all,"Heatherpaw meowed the whole thing in nearly a breath.

"Wow. Well, I-"Snowpaw's ear flicked at Sweetwind's sharp mew.

"Snowpaw! Dawn patrol!"

"Coming Sweetwind!"Snowpaw looked at Heatherpaw sadly."Gotta go. Talk to you later!"she bounded over to Sweetwind, into the cold dawn air.

"It looks like it'll be a beautiful day, doesn't it Snowpaw?"Sweetwind asked her apprentice.

Snowpaw nodded."Yeah. Who else is coming?"

"Coppertail, Flameheart and Quillpaw, and Hollowwing."Sweetwind replied. Coppertail and Hollowwing were already waiting at the entrance to the moor. Flameheart was now waking Quillpaw, and Owlclaw was talking to some of the senior warriors.

"Ready?"Sweetwind asked, once Flameheart and Quillpaw arrived.

Snowpaw nodded. The six cats headed off towards the Riverclan border.

Snowpaw padded back into camp. The Riverclan border patrol had found nothing to be worried about, and Snowpaw was surprised to see Blazeheart addressing the clan. She sat next to Heatherpaw.

"What's going on?"she asked her.

"Blazeheart's decided to go home and battle Rainwhisker!"Heatherpaw replied excitedly. Snowpaw stared wide-eyed.

"But there's only eight of us, and Ferncloud's kits are due any day now!"Snowpaw didn't understand why Blazeheart would take such a risk.

"Blazeheart is hoping the others will choose his side after all."Heatherpaw replied, seeing that Snowpaw was still concerned.

"We will be leaving tomorrow at dawn,"Blazeheart continued,"but I must ask of one thing: we've helped Windclan fight its battles, and I am asking all of you to help us do the same."

Morningstar stood beside him. Snowpaw hadn't seen her until now."Blazeheart is right. We owe these cats, and since they have helped us, lets return the favor."Murmurs of agreement and disagreement rose from all the cats.

"Yes! We must show these cats we care!"Sweetwind yowled.

"Windclan shall not owe any depts!"Flameheart growled.

"They helped us through leaf-bare!"Owlclaw cried.

"They ate our prey and shared our nests during Leaf-bare!"Lightheart snarled.

"ENOUGH!"Morningstar snapped. She narrowed her eyes at everyone."I will not have a clan divided about anything, much less a battle. If you don't join this battle, you're not part of Windclan anymore."Shocked mews rang out in the assembled group of cats.

"That's no way to treat a clan!"Flameheart yowled.

"You can't tell us what to do!"Lightheart agreed with Flameheart.

"You're not our ruler!"Brownfoot challenged.

"Really?"Morningstar leaped down, face to face with Brownfoot."Really?"She showed her thorn-sharp fangs. She must have snapped at his comment, Snowpaw guessed. Brownfoot was slowly backing away.

"I didn't mean it like that, Morningstar,"his green eyes were wide with fear. Morningstar unsheathed her claws.

"Then why did you say it?"Morningstar was crouching, as if she were watching prey.

"Because, well, you can't tell us all what to do,"Brownfoot's tail tip twitched.

"You're right,"Morningstar meowed, rising to her full height again."But, the warrior code is the clan leader's words are the warrior code, and clearly you've forgotten that."she turned around and leaped back onto Large Dune."All warriors are coming with me, except Brownfoot and Crowfeather, to guard camp. Bronzepaw is still coming. This is his home, after all."Morningstar took a moment to lock eyes with every one of her warriors, then meowed,"We will hunt for ourselves today, except Crowfeather and Brownfoot, you're in charge of the elders and queens."With a flick of her tail, Morningstar leaped down and exited camp. Snowpaw looked around for Heatherpaw. She was excited! It was the first time she'd see her home in almost a entire season.

Quillpaw padded up to her,"Do you want to go hunting together?"he asked.

Snowpaw shrugged."Sure. It might be our last time together."The two cats exited camp behind Silverpaw and Bronzepaw. It was nearly sun-high, and the grass had already lost all of its dew. Snowpaw watched as Quillpaw ran off towards a plump rabbit, easily catching it. He picked it up and dropped it in front of her.

"Want to share?"he asked her.

"Okay. There's plenty for both of us."Snowpaw bent down to take a bite."It's...okay..."Snowpaw sighed, swallowing.

Quillpaw straightened up."What's wrong?"he meowed with concern.

"I'm just sad to leave this place. It's kind of like my second home,"Snowpaw took another bite of rabbit."And I'm worried that my friends won't be there..."

"Of course they'll be there!"Quillpaw said."Why wouldn't they be?"

"Rainwhisker was a pretty horrible cat..."Snowpaw watched as Quillpaw took a bite.

"Well, I have a confesion to make,"Quillpaw meowed as he ate the last bit of rabbit."I don't want you to go because, well..."Quillpaw looked down at the ground.

"Well?"Snowpaw said, getting slightly annoyed.

"Because I like you, in that way,"Quillpaw's mew was barely a whisper.

Snowpaw twitched the tip of her tail."Really?"she asked. Suddenly a mew exploded into the air,

"Snowpaw! Quillpaw! Come home! We are leaving tomorrow at dawn!"Blazeheart called. The two cats trotted back to camp.
