Chapter 24

Snowpaw was trudging through the moor fields very quickly. Part of her warrior assessment was tracking, and tracking Willowheart the elder was a hard task! I'm having trouble tracking an elder, imaging how Whitepaw is doing with Blazeheart!

Sweetwind was expecting kits again, but this time it was from a new tom, Emberfoot. Windclan had had several of its members go out and find new warriors, and they had been gone for many moons, but had finally returned. Sweetwind and a few other cats had been 'love-struck' by the returning cats.

All in all, Kesterelflight, Whiskerpaw, who had become Whiskerheart, Whitetail, Nightcloud, Gorsetail, Weaselfur, Harespring, Leaftail, Antpelt, Fruzestrike, Boulderclaw, and Sunstrike all returned. Nightcloud was devastated that Crowfeather had died, and she pledged not to love another cat for a very long time.

Some of the warriors in Windclan have very strange names, Snowpaw thought as she raced along. She started to realize that Willowheart's scent was getting stronger and stronger with every passing step. Concentrate, Snowpaw. She wants to fool you.

The day was a bright and sunny one, with just a little bit of mist in the trees. The sun had just barely risen, and Blazeheart had told all of the apprentices would be getting their warrior assessment today; all of them except Aspenpaw and Gingerpaw.

Snowpaw stopped dead in her tracks. Where has the scent gone? she thought. She quickly turned around and paused, tasting the air for any signs of Willowheart.

Ah, very smart Willowheart. You've hid and simply turned around. Snowpaw dashed back the way she had come, but still not running fully. She didn't want to miss Willowheart. She stopped running and crouched in the long, prickly moor grass.

Ah ha! Snowpaw saw Willowheart's white pelt, easily visible in the pale green grass. Who wouldn't miss that pelt?

Snowpaw approached as if she were hunting prey. She placed each paw step in front of the other, careful not to go too fast. She heard Willowheart mumble,"Where is that Snowpaw? I thought she would've been here by now,"

"I'm right here!"Snowpaw leaped out of the grass and barely missed Willowheart's white tail. Mouse dung! The she-cat dashed away, and Snowpaw gave chase.

Snowpaw was easily catching up to Willowheart, though, and the elder seemed to be going slower and slower.

"Willowheart, are you okay?"Snowpaw asked, catching up to the elder and placing her tail on Willowheart's haunches.

"I'm...fine...just a...little bit...old..."the white she-cat replied in between breaths.

Snowpaw shook her head."You should go back to camp,"she meowed as she curled her tail over her paws since she had sat down.

"Nah...back in my day, I was the fastest cat anyone knew. Now, though, I'm way slower, and out of shape."

"But I need someone who challenges me!"Snowpaw wailed.

Willowheart purred in amusement."Blazeheart told me you would easily catch me,"she meowed."He said that your stamina is kind of scary. You aren't the fastest cat, but can run for long periods of time. However, he also told me that I wasn't to be easily persuaded in going back to camp."

Snowpaw cocked her head."What?"

"Basically, that you needed to reason with me to do so. Look, Snowpaw, when we go back home, there will be all kinds of trouble, and we're going to need as may cats as possible to join our ranks. We need cats with strong reasoning skills to do so. Your brother Whitepaw, is extremely good at this, but isn't so good at running for a long time. So, you are going to persuade me to come and live with your clan."

Snowpaw nodded, slowly getting what she needed to do."So. Ever thought about joining a clan?"

"Now why would I do that?"Willowheart asked, narrowing her eyes.

"Well,"Snowpaw began, thinking of all of the good reasons to join a clan."You wouldn't have to worry about predators every second, and you would be warm at night. You even get to eat fresh prey!"

Willowheart shook her head."But I've heard all about how you have to fight other cats, is that true?"

"Well, yes, but when you give everything to your clan, you get to experience the love of friends and family. My clan is like family to me,"Snowpaw's tail was lashing in impatience.

Willowheart stood."Snowpaw, I can tell you're really trying, but lashing your tail is no way to show me that a clan is something good. Relax,"

"Well, it's hard!"

"I know, but just try a little bit harder,"she meowed, then sat back down."So I do still have to fight cats,"

"Not all the time!"Snowpaw meowed, standing. She was concentrating on keeping her tail from lashing constantly."You get to hunt and do border patrols and live a fun life. We need warriors, and someone as yourself would be good for our clan because you're really good at tracking, and I'm sure at hunting and stuff,"

"Okay, fine. I'll join."Willowheart stood and started padding away."Now it's time for you to go home and see what the next part of your assessment is."

Snowpaw followed Willowheart home, and as she padded alongside the elder, she meowed,"What was it like for you to join Forestclan?"

Willowheart chuckled."Well, I had lived a good long life, but as a street cat, I knew I wouldn't be around for much longer unless something happened, and when your mom told me that she was forming a clan, and she needed wise cats, Funnyheart and I, joined. He was originally named Storm, but took the name Funnyheart because he is indeed quite a humorous cat."

"Did you get to choose your warrior names?"

"Well, yeah because Foreststar wanted to honor our long lives and such,"

Snowpaw's eyes widened."Wow...that's so cool. What was it like being a street cat?"

"Well, imagine clan life without a clan; you have to hunt your own food, and fight for your own land. I was opposed by many cats, but none could ever defeat me. I quickly rose to the top around the large structures and such, because no one could ever defeat me, but I never wanted the most desired land."

"Why not? If you're the best, why didn't you?"Snowpaw mewed in confusion.

"On that prime patch of land, it's a consistent blood-bath. Cats rise and fall as quickly as the sun there. At least, it was until Jocko came."

"Who's Jocko?"

"Imagine Rainstar with black fur and amber eyes, and you've got Jocko. He was the meanest, smartest, and most blood-thirsty cat around. He had a group called 'The Pack', and he even asked me to join, but I told him to get off my land. He listened to me, and for awhile, I had peace with The Pack. Not everyone was so lucky, such as Daisy, one of my best friends."

"Why didn't you and Daisy share land if you guys were friends?"

"She wanted to be on her own, and I warned her about Jocko's group, and she got overthrown, and yeah. Jocko killed her. I found her body, and was so saddened. No cat on earth would I ever miss so much, but then I met Funnyheart,"

The two she-cats had reached camp, and Snowpaw grapped a rabbit for Willowheart and her to share."Aren't you going to finish your assessment?"Willowheart asked in confusion.

"Not yet. I want to know how you and Funnyheart met."

They padded into the elders den, another cave in the Windclan camp. Snowpaw spotted Funnyheart, a mound of gray fur, sleeping the day away.

"Well, after Daisy had died, I had gone into a state of denial, and I was patrolling the fence line border and I saw Funnyheart looking at me with humor in his eyes. He said 'You look real down. But you're on a fence!'. At first I just wanted to claw his ears off, but soon, I jumped off the fence and was talking to him. At the time, he was a kitty pet, and we spent our afternoons together, and it was great. He smelled like a fresh flower, but I wasn't going to tell him that."

Several fuzzy heads poked into the elders den. Snowpaw recognized them as Poolkit, Dustkit, and Blizzardkit.

"Featherkit, Rainkit and Streamkit won't let us play with them and Ashstar's kits!"Blizzardkit wailed.

"And why is that?"Willowheart asked, looking at Blizzardkit's red tabby fur, sticking out at all angles.

"We don't know!"Poolkit replied.

Dustkit stared at Snowpaw."Why is Snowpaw in here? Shouldn't she be training as a warrior?"the brown tom started purring in amuesment, and Poolkit and Blizzardkit joined in.

"Snowpaw's training to be an apprentice, not a warrior!"Poolkit and her siblings were on the floor laughing.

Snowpaw narrowed her eyes. Really, kits? She got up and towered over them"I'm almost a warrior, and this is how you treat me?!"she roared."Willowheart comes from where I live, and I don't appreciate you kits coming in here and questioning my motives!"

Blizzardkit was shocked, as well as Poolkit, but Dustkit looked hurt.

"I'm sorry,"Blizzardkit mewed.

"I'm telling mom!"Dustkit stormed out, with Poolkit hard on his heels. Blizzardkit looked at Snowpaw sadly, and padded out.

"No wonder Dustkit and Poolkit aren't allowed to play, they'd just make up their own rules!"Snowpaw spat.

Willowheart nodded, and meowed,"Blizzardkit, come here."

The red tabby appeared at the entrance."Yes, Willowheart?"

"Tell Birdfeather that Snowpaw is innocent. She's an apprentice who just needs to be left alone."

Blizzardkit nodded and left.

"Anyway, we kept talking and meeting up, and soon I was in love with Funnyheart. But one day, I was on my hunting grounds, and Jocko and some of his friends announced they were going to take o-"

"Snowpaw is NOT innocent!"Birdfeather growled, stalking into the elders' den."She called my kits horrible names!"

"No I didn't!"Snowpaw was outraged. How DARE those small kits do that?

"No, Birdfeather, your kits are lying. I was here the whole time,"Willowheart had stood up. Despite being an elder, the she-cat could still deal nasty blows if needed.

Funnyheart had woken up. He growled,"Birdfeather, don't make false accusations about your clanmates, your kits aren't perfect."

"Neither is Snowpaw,"Birdfeather spat in reply. She padded up to the cream she-cat."Snowpaw, you better apologize to my kits right now!"

Snowpaw unsheathed her claws."I'm not saying sorry for something I didn't do!"

"Whoa whoa whoa. What's going on here?"Morningstar asked.

"Well, Snowpaw called my kits horrible names."Birdfeather meowed to Morningstar.

"Funnyheart? Willowheart?"the leader mewed.

"She's lying. Her kits aren't perfect, and they made fun of Snowpaw."Willowheart growled. Snowpaw fluffed out her pelt.

"Snowpaw, aren't you supposed to be training to be a warrior?"Morningstar asked her.

"Well, yes, but-"

"Then go. Birdfeather, I'm going to let you off of this one, but next time you won't be so lucky,"Morningstar growled.

Rage burned in Snowpaw's stomach. She flattened her ears. I won't let her get away with this one, even if it means delaying my warrior ceremony! NO one lies and gets away with it!

"Morningstar, I believe Birdfeather should be punished more harshly. I-"

"My word is final. Now go Snowpaw, find Blazeheart. Now."

Snowpaw crouched, and leaped onto Birdfeather, and lashed at her face. Her claws ripped off some fur, and satisfied, Snowpaw left camp before a cat could stop her.

What now, Birdfeather? Snowpaw was running around, looking for Blazeheart. He was battling Whitepaw in the shadowed valley. She waited patiently until they were done. Worry was pricking at her pelt. What if my ceremony is delayed? Well, I attacked because I wanted everything to be fair.

"What is it, Snowpaw? Oh, right. Go get a warrior from camp to assess your hunting skills; I won't need you to do any battle moves for me."Blazeheart meowed curtly.

"Pity. And why not?"Snowpaw asked.

"Your fighting in the battle was excellent. I don't need any further proof from you,"he meowed in reply.

"Um, Blazeheart, can't you assess me?"Snowpaw asked, and she quickly explained what happened in camp."I'm scared Morningstar's going to delay my warrior ceremony, and punish me, and-"

"She can't. I wouldn't allow it. If she would dare do something like that because you stuck up for yourself, then we would leave. I think we could survive without Windclan at this point."

"Okay,"and Snowpaw padded back to camp, sulking as she entered. Birdfeather and Morningstar were talking, and she looked around. I'll get Hawkfire; wait, no I can't. He's from another clan. I'll get Hollowwing, then. Stares and growls from the Windclan cats made her jump, but she got to Hollowwing without being stopped.

"Hollowwing, can you please assess my hunting skills?"

"Sure."the two cats padded out of camp.

"Your skills are great, Snowpaw."Hollowwing meowed flatly. She was still sad about Jaywhisker's death.

"What's wrong?"Snowpaw asked the queen.

"I am still sad about Jaywhisker. I don't really know what to do,"Hollowwing looked at Snowpaw with sad blue eyes.

"Well, I guess that the best thing you could do is to move on,"Snowpaw meowed, and she and Hollowwing headed back to camp.

So. I know I said I would have warrior names, BUT THAT'S FOR CHAPTER 25, and it'll be the first thing I do.

I'm also not going to upload allegiances because they haven't really changed, but next chapter they will.

Love y'all!
