I'm soo sorry for the delay! I joined some fests earlier this year and I had to finish those stories before I wrote more of this! But never fear, here's the next chapter! There are some Neal/Sara feels in this one so enjoy! AND OMG, WC got renewed for season 6!
"Peter." Neal opened the door to see his friend standing outside his doorway, Satchmo next to him. "What's going on? Are you alright?"
"No I don't think I am," Peter muttered. "Sorry for popping in on you this late but it's been a month since I've seen El and –" he took in a deep breath and paused. "As I said before, I love being here but I miss my wife and it's not going away at all. In fact, I just think I miss her even more than before."
"Why don't you come in?" Neal gestured towards the sofa and moved towards the fridge to grab two beers. He handed Peter one and sat across from him. "What's going on, Peter?"
"I just miss her so much," Peter exclaimed. "Burke Premier Events is still running here without her and she loved that job. She could move back easily and everything would go back to normal."
"Sometimes, you're going to have to cut your losses too," the other man pointed out. " Elizabeth has already fulfilled her quota of sacrifices for you, Peter. It's your turn now. Either stay in New York and not be with El or move back to D.C. and be with her." He shrugged his shoulders and lifted up his hands. "These are really the only two options you have in this type of situation."
Peter looked downcast. "I guess you're right," he agreed. "But, who'd ever think that you'd be the one giving advice to me?"
Neal laughed lightly in agreement. "I never saw this coming though. I thought you'd love it in D.C."
"That's what I thought too," Peter muttered. He tilted back his bottle and drank the last bits of his beer.
"Have you talked to Elizabeth about any of this?" Neal asked him quietly. "As you've always said, honesty is the best policy. If you tell her that you miss her a lot, she might be willing to compromise and move back here. Even if she doesn't, you'll know that you gave it your best shot."
"You're right. I will talk to El," the F.B.I agent decided. "I think it's high time that I come clean and tell her how I feel."
After Peter left, Neal sank down into the couch and laid his head in his hands. He couldn't help but feel personally responsible for Peter and Elizabeth's current situation. If it weren't for him, Peter would've probably been able to make a smoother transition into his new workplace. But, Peter wasn't able to put New York past him. During the three weeks that Peter was in D.C., Diana would receive a call every day from him asking about Neal and the rest of the team.
Then, his thoughts turned to the blonde who had also returned into his life. What if Sara decided to move again? he wondered. Over the past month, they had become better friends and now, they were occasionally stealing a few kisses here and there. He shook his head. It was always better to not think about the worst-case scenarios.
"Are you sure you're here to stay?" Neal asked Sara hesitantly as he handed her a glass of wine.
Sara raised her eyebrows. "What's brought this on?" she asked. Just five minutes before, they were talking about their favorite movies and now, they were discussing heavy topics. Again. Of course, she was pretty positive that Peter probably was the root of all their in-depth personal discussions.
"I rarely get this emotionally invested in a girl, Sara," Neal admitted. "Before you, Kate was the only one for me. I thought that she was the moon and the stars. But, I'm still not sure if she even loved me. I just want to make sure that we'll be able to go through this with fewer kinks along the way."
"I think I am here for good." Sara smiled up at Neal. "I'm a workaholic, Neal. I thought that London would just make me happier because I was being promoted. But, it didn't and I came back. The move had nothing to do with my personal life." And, it was true. She wasn't in love with him yet. But, she knew that over time, she could see herself growing old with Neal at her side. They balanced each other out.
"Good. So, did you see that new exhibit at the Met? It's fantastic." And they easily moved into a new conversation as if they hadn't ever been talking about uncomfortable topics a moment ago.
"Neal, can you see me in my office?" Diana asked as she passed his desk. "I just want to have a quick word with you."
"Yeah sure." Neal stood up and followed his boss into her office. "What's up?"
"I want to talk about Peter."
Neal exhaled deeply and leaned back in his chair. He shook his head. "I don't know what to tell you," he muttered. "And honestly, it's not my story to tell you and I think that none of us should interfere in his life with El, me included."
She nodded. "I understand but it's just so weird having Peter back when I've spent the last year getting ready to run this place without him."
"You've known for that long?" Neal asked in a slightly accusing tone. "Why didn't you tell me?"
"I didn't want to cause any problems between you two," Diana admitted. "I always knew that Peter would want to look for better opportunities and I didn't want to wreck anything between you after I officially found out."
He nodded. "You're right. I wouldn't have taken it well, especially with his trial and everything."
Diana sighed. "Actually, the real reason for you being here is that the case that you and Sara were working on went south."
"What happened?" Neal asked, frowning. "I thought we caught the guy."
"Yeah we caught him but he's left New York. So, we've lost our leading suspect and apparently, he's been gone for over a week now and nobody bothered to let us know."
"What do you want me to do?"
"I really don't know," Diana admitted. She rubbed her brow and exhaled deeply. "But, if you think of something, let me know."
He nodded. "Definitely."
