Chapter Five:

IT TURNED OUT THAT I wasn't the only one who took a nap on the journey here. Adrian had managed to get in contact with Sydney, by using Spirit to talk to her in a dream, and found out that she was being held in the cells that were on a level below the compound. We were able to get past the first set of security with ease. The set up reminded me of the gates you have to pass through at the airports. We stood to the side and watched the process for a couple of minutes. The people who went through, all had passes that hung around their necks. They scanned their cards, and then walked through the large detector to confirm that they had nothing threatening on them.

There were two guards making sure everything went smoothly. Luckily for us, there was a gap between the detector and the wall that we could sneak through since we were invisible to everyone but ourselves. Adrian had explained that the spell was similar to when he used Spirit to disguise people's looks. It worked on everyone but those who knew what was going on, so us three could see each other, but no-one else could.

We had to take a risk with the door to the stairs. There was a camera directly facing it, so we had to quickly open the door, slip inside and pray to God that we weren't seen. Luckily, the door out of the stair well didn't have a camera directly facing it, so with some caution we were able to exit it feeling pretty confident that no-one would have seen the door being opened. The next part, however, was more horrible than getting a lecture from my mother.

"Are you sure this is the right way?" I whispered to Adrian, looking at our next obstacle in disbelief.

"Yes. Sage always gives immaculate directions. She just got woken up before she could give any more details."

"Like how we need a security pass to get through the door to cells?" Dimitri chimed in, as he paced back and forth in front of the door, trying to figure out a way in. He was on edge.

I placed a hand on his back, about to tell him that we'd work it out like we always do, when I realised someone was coming our way.

"Get back guys!" I murmured. We all placed our backs flat against the wall opposite the door, as a woman came stalking down the hallway. She had a card in hand, and was making a bee line for the door. This was too good to be true. But luckily for us, it wasn't. We all looked at each other, and nodded in understanding. This was our chance.

The lady swiped her card, and pressed the handle down while pushing the door in wards to open it. Just as we hoped, she walked away and let the door swing shut on its own, giving us an opportunity to pass through before it closed. The door got slightly caught on Adrian's shoe, making a soft bang sound. The woman turned back to the door at the sudden noise, but was quick to dismiss it when she saw no-one was there. Well, no-one that she could see anyway. We waited for her to disappear from view before making our way down the hall.

"This invisibility spell is brilliant," I commended softly as Adrian led the way to Sydney's cell. We passed what seemed like hundreds of boring offices, until we eventually came across a small hallway that contained 5 doors, all with metal bars on them. Adrian began to walk towards the only shut door in the hall, but I stopped him.

"We have to stick to the plan."

He frowned at my words, but nodded in understanding. "You'll see her soon, I promise." He seemed to relax at the thought of this, giving Dimitri a chance to speak the question that had been on all our minds.

"How are we going to get out?"

Luckily, I had already come up with a solution.

"Don't worry, I have it figured out, but we need to change the plan a bit." Adrian was about to start arguing, but I held up my hands so I could continue. "Which I know goes against what I just said, but you'll have to trust me. When you guys have Sydney, run to the door and wait there. You'll know what to do afterwards."

"Rose…"

"Dimitri, please. I know what I'm doing. I promise I'll be okay."

His brows furrowed with worry, but he held his tongue.

I took a deep breath, and readied myself for the task ahead.

"Be careful, and good luck," Adrian whispered.

I nodded in reply, then turned to Dimitri. A warm smile now spread across his face.

"I'll see you soon, Roza."

"Yes you will," I said, returning the smile.

I then turned on my heels and headed towards Sydney's cell. Just as I had hoped, there was no glass or plastic behind the bars, allowing me to easily peer into the tiny room. Sydney was sitting on the edge of the bed, her face buried into her folded arms. I took one last look around to make sure no-one was nearby, before speaking.

"Sydney, don't react or make a move."

She tensed in surprised, but stayed as she was. Sydney had always been good under high pressure situations, but this was taking it to the next level.

"It's Rose. We're here to rescue you, like Adrian promised. I need you to not make any sudden, obvious movements." I paused, and thought for a moment. "Pretend like you're tired and curl up on your bed so that your mouth can't be seen, but you can easily talk."

She did as I said, and slowly lifted her head and wiped her eyes. She pretended to yawn, and then curled up on the bed.

"Okay, so what's the plan?" She questioned, a few moments later.

"I need you to ask to go to the toilet. I'll be able to explain the rest to you from there."

This caught her off guard. Just like me, she hated being out of the loop.

"The toilet? You guys do know there's no window in there don't you?"

She wasn't being mean, she honestly couldn't see where this was going. Which was fair enough, as it was a pretty out there plan.

"Yes, now come on. I'm ready when you are."

Sydney got up off the small cot, and then pressed a small button on the wall that had a speaker attached to it. She leaned forward, and spoke softly into it.

"I need to go to the bathroom."

We waited for a reply, but none came. She didn't seem worried though. I few moments later, I heard Dimitri cough, indicating that someone was coming.

"Sydney, you won't be able to see me because I'm invisible, but I'll be near by the whole time," I quickly whispered before taking a step back away from the door. The guy we had seen standing at the security check point when we had entered the building, appeared from around the corner and came to the door. He unlocked it without a word, and roughly grabbed Sydney by the arm and pushed her in front of him. In the distance, I could see Adrian tense and instinctively move towards Sydney, wanting so badly to protect her. But Dimitri stopped him.

I followed closely behind Sydney, while Dimitri and Adrian followed suit behind me. The bathroom was all the way back near the door we had struggled to get into. The pain in the ass door was just around the corner from where we were now, which worked extremely well in my new plan. Sydney opened the bathroom door wide, allowing me ample opportunity to enter the little room. The guy mercifully waited outside. The bathroom was simple. There was one sink, with two toilet stalls. To my horror, there was a camera in the corner of the room, but Sydney stayed calm and entered one of the stalls. I followed her in, and touched her arm to let her know I was next to her. She yelped in surprise, but luckily the door was shut before she did so.

"There aren't any cameras in here right?" I asked, still surprised over the fact there was one in the bathroom at all.

"No, thank goodness. The Alchemists still seem to have some shred of decency left." She stared at me for a few seconds, and then smiled. "Good, I can see you now. It just took a moment to focus. So what's the plan?"

I handed her the extra pouch Jackie had given me.

Sydney rolled her eyes. "Of course she got involved," she mumbled, holding the bag in disbelief. "But I think the Alchemists will realise if I disappear."

"Yes, which is why I also brought this," I remarked, as I fished out a silver ring from my pocket.

She gave me a confused look, one that told me she was blatantly concerned for my sanity. I held up my hand before she could speak. "And yes, I know it's a ring. But it's a Spirit enhanced one."

Sydney's eyes widened in realisation.

"Oh no, Rose! You're not about to do what I think you're about to do are you?"

It was my turn to smile. Sydney glared.

"You can't do this, there's so many things that could go wrong…."

I looked at my watch. The guy was going to start getting suspicious real soon. It was time to wrap this up.

"Look, Sydney. This is the only way to rescue you without causing a war between the vampire and Alchemist world. I'll be fine, but we need to do this, now."

"Then don't rescue me. Leave. I'll be okay." I had forgotten how stubborn Sydney was. But she wasn't as stubborn as me.

"Do you really think Adrian will just leave you here? And our spell is going to wear off really soon, which means we'll all get captured," I said, pointing out what should have been obvious to her.

"Are you black mailing me?"

"If you want to call it that fine. But either way, you have two options. Do it my way, and everything will be fine. Or do it your way, and stay captured and have us as all as your new cell mates."

She rubbed her temple, trying to come up with an alternative solution. A knock sounded on the door.

"Miss. Sage, you need to hurry up," the man called, clearly irritated.

"Just another minute," Sydney called.

She looked me in the eyes, and after a couple of seconds, she caved. "Fine you win, I'll do it your way. But only because I know what an amazing fighter you are."

I brushed the comment aside, and focused on the task at hand. I gave Sydney my pouch for her to hang on to, so we left no traces behind, and then slipped on the ring Adrian had specially designed for this moment. Sydney placed my now useless pouch in the pocket of her jeans, and the activated her own.

"I hope this ring works," I said as we prepared ourselves.

Because we had all known that the ring was a disguise, there was no way to really test it. But Adrian assured me that he had captured Sydney's likeness to the best of his ability. Even her clothes. Jackie hadn't been kidding when she said I was going to take her place. But thanks to Adrian, the Alchemists wouldn't be able to tell the difference, well I hoped so anyway. I just had to stay quiet and wait for them to transport Sydney, I mean me, to the re-education center. When we get out of the building, I will be able to surprise the Alchemist's with my fighting abilities, and escape. Sure, they won't be able to understand Sydney's sudden increase in strength, or combat skills. But most importantly, they won't be able to trace it back to the Moroi or us Dhampirs, thus preventing a war from breaking out. All in a days work really.

I opened the stall door, and walked over to the sink. I washed my hands for theatrical purposes, then dried them. I then headed for the door, with Sydney in tow.

Here came the moment of truth.

I opened the door…
