Itachi's POV

2 months later

I paced my room impatiently. It has been 2 months already since she went away for her mission. Why hasn't she come back yet?! In my frustration, I marched all the way towards Pein's office. Not too long after, I stood in front of the heavy double doors. I stepped forward and threw it open.

"Leader."

Pein didn't even looked up from his paperwork. "Itachi. What brings you here?"

I looked at him dead in the eye and clenched my fists. "Midori. Where is she? An infiltration can't possibly last that long, could it?"

I know, I may be overreacting, but she's the only connection left to my past. Along with Sasuke that is, but that doesn't count.

Leader sighed and looked up from his paperwork. "Calm down Itachi. I know that she's important to you but-"

"Where is she? What's taking her too long?" I hissed lowly.

Leader looked at me and gestured me to sit, which I did. "Honestly, I don't know. The mission is supposed to be over in two weeks. But it looks like-"

I glared at him."Two weeks?! Two months had passed already and you didn't even sent a team to help her?!" I hissed harshly in reply.

Leader slammed his fist impatiently on the table. "Do not act too rash and let your feelings get in the way! At first I thought that she just went through some trouble, but-"

I looked at him seriously and asked. "Where is it?"

His eye twitched slightly. "Stop interrupting me. And where is what?"

I growled under my breath. "Her mission. Where is it?"

He gave a long heavy sigh. "In Oto. In the forests near the border. But you can't seriously think about going there do you?"

"Oh, but I do."

He closed his eyes and though about it thoroughly. "Fine. But you should take Deidara. It's faster that way."

I grimaced. Why does it have to be with that blond bomber? But I must admit, riding his clay bird is more faster and less tiring than traveling on foot.

"Fine."

"Good, when do you want to leave?" Pein asked, returning his attention to the never ending paper works.

"Today."

**************-*-***********
*time skip*

I hopped off Deidara's clay bird and entered the entrance of the hideout. The entrance has been blown open and rocks scattered everywhere. Deidara whistled appreciatively behind me.

"I always knew that she always thinks that art is a bang, yea."

I chose not to reply.

I walked hurriedly from room to room, searching for any useful clues. Surprisingly, Deidara is unusually quiet that day, not that I'm complaining or anything. I almost gave up on searching the hideout and thought that maybe this isn't the correct hideout. But Deidara insisted to stay for a while. So we decided to venture a bit more and started opening random doors. That's the time we saw this room.

Deidara and I stood in shock at the sight in front of us. Bloodied floors, walls and carpets greeted us. A few weapons and limbs is still lying here and there. And no, it's not about the blood and limbs that made us remain in a state of shock. It's the bloody ANBU masks that is scattered on the floor, a Konoha hitai-ate lay on the floor near it.

I inhaled sharply. "An ambush. This whole thing is a trap." I quickly looked at the blonde behind me.
"Deidara prepare the bird. We're heading for Konoha."

Deidara nodded and dashed outside. I stayed on the room, eyes fixed on the mess. I could smell the horrible stench of the decaying limbs, but one thing struck my eye. On the far end of the room, a small door is attached. I slowly made my way towards it, Sharingan activated.

When I'm already in front of the door, I kicked the door open and surveyed the room. When I sensed that there's no enemy, I started to relax a bit. I searched the room for any potential clues. When I found none, I started to walk back towards the door when I noticed something on the floor. I crouched down and inspected it.

It's a message written in blood, the blood now dark and dry. The message read.

Help me, Itachi.

************* time skip again***********

After reading that message, a new surge of adrenaline rushed in me. I'm already standing in front of the ANBU torture chambers, wearing a full ANBU uniform. Don't ask how I got it. Let's just say I came across a flimsy ANBU member.

With my real identity and chakra signature concealed, I made my way over to the dungeons with ease, no one even turned to question me. I made my way over an ANBU doing guard duty down the dungeons.

"May I know where the cell of Hayashi Midori is? Tsunade-sama's orders." Now, being in ANBU in my earlier years, I learned one thing. Never doubt an order when the Hokage is involved.

The guard hesitated for a moment and I almost thought he won't oblige, but he finally showed me the cell. I sighed quietly in relief. Probably a newbie. We walked for a few minutes and stopped in front of a rusty door.

"Here. I trust you can take of her now, can you?" He said and gave me the keys.

I took them and nodded. "Of course." And with that he walked away. I almost smirked at his stupidity while opening the doors. The locks clicked and the door creaked open, revealing a battered Midori soaked in her own blood. My heart lurched. What the hell did they do to you?!

Anger took over me but I quickly suppressed it. I made my way towards her and cut her chains away from her hands. I then scooped her up in my arms gently and made my way towards the exit. At first, no one paid attention to us, but one of them came up to me and asked.

"May I ask, what in the world are you doing?!" A girl with long black hair and icy blue eyes seethed in rage.

"Hokage's orders." I stated simply. If anything goes wrong, I can simply use a substitution jutsu and reappear somewhere else. It's either that or the door behind me.

She growled. "I need the paper and the signature. NOW."

I replied softly. "I'm sorry, but she didn't hand me such things."

She glared at me. "Did the Hokage really ordered you to do this?"

"Yes." I replied silently, not noticing the silver lining in her eyes.

She growled at me. "Lies. What is your intention?"

Okay, this is bad. I looked at her and activated my sharingan underneath my mask. "Tsukuyomi."

She gasped and fell down the floor and I immediately dashed outside, towards the doors. I could hear squads of ANBU running after me while I hopped from roof to roof and spotted Deidara hovering nearby, he landed on one of the nearby roofs and shouted at me.

"Hurry up! Do you wasn't to get executed, hmm?!"

I grunted and ran faster, visualizing tape over his four mouths. I jumped into the bird and Deidara sailed it into the sky. When we were finally above ground, I started removing the uniform and putting back my cloak. Deidara started tending on her with the first aid kit. Didn't ask where we got it, long story.

When she's finally a bit clean, Deidara sighed and looked at me. "You really care for her don't you, hm?"

"Hn."

Deidara groaned and made the bird fly faster. "You're hopeless."

****** sorry, but time skip again! They're already in the base*******

I sat at the chairs, waiting for Konan and Kakuzu to finish healing her, I tended when she exited the room with a troubled face. I looked up at her. "Well?"

She sighed. "Well, good thing is, she's alive."

I brightened a bit after that, but my heart stopped on what she said next.

"But she fell into coma. And we don't know if she's even going to wake up. Her head is fractured. Her stomach is severed, she got nasty wounds all over her body, and she experienced massive chakra loss. I'm so sorry Itachi." And with that, she walked away.
