I finally updated! Sorry about that! I had a sudden wave of Writer's Block and this feeling of just not liking where my written chapters were going, so I just edited the chapters and kinda stopped writing it for so long. But! I updated it now! I apologize for making you wait so long! I have a lot more written down, so I'll actually get my lazy butt back to work for you all. My bad. XD
On a side note, I hope you all are having a wonderful holiday this season!
We had arrived at the base not long after I had gotten myself ready to go. It almost felt like going on yet another Hydra mission, but instead I was simply going to be watched by my new brother's friend. Thinking about that aspect made the journey to the base one of the most boring things I had ever done. Once there, Steve took me to see Peggy right away. She had short, brown hair and brown eyes that were sharp and intelligent. It made me wonder how she had come to know someone like Steve almost. He talked to her in English for a few moments, while I obviously didn't know what they were saying, and then left, probably to report for duty. When he left, Peggy smiled at me and spoke in the same odd language that Steve had used when talking to her. English, as it was called, I guess. Naturally, I didn't understand her, so I just stood there and looked at her in confusion before going to a nearby chair and sitting down.
Peggy was also confused, but spoke again. The tone made it sound like a question. I assumed that she was asking if I understood her, so I shook my head no. The language barrier here would be a problem, especially since I barely knew this woman. She seemed to realize the problem herself and sighed in frustration, running a hand through her hair. With not much else to do, I drummed random beats on my stomach lightly, amused by the noise it made. Peggy glanced at me and chuckled softly. I glanced up at her, "What?"
She smiled, shook her head, and raised her hands casually.
I sighed softly, "Weirdo."
We sat there awkwardly for what seemed like forever, neither of us knowing how to communicate to one another. I thought for a moment before grabbing a blank sheet of paper and drawing a quick, childish doodle of a robin and a peg. I held up the picture and pointed to myself and then the bird, then, I pointed to her and then pointed to the peg.
She tilted her head to the side before it clicked in her head and chuckled, understanding the message. She nodded and took the paper, shaking my hand as we made the transaction. After that we sent messages back and forth periodically when she didn't have to work to communicate with each other. I'd draw a picture, she'd draw one, and we'd use that to get over the large barrier we had. When we got really good at it, we did more intricate ways of communicating and told each other stories and jokes to try and help break the ice.
After we had the signals down to a science, we were able to make more complete sentences with the communication. She informed me that since Steve was a soldier, he would be away from home a lot. She offered to look after me since I had no one else to go to while he was gone, and that it would be easier now that we could at least somewhat understand each other.
I nodded and asked when he'd be home.
She shrugged and signed that it would hopefully not be long, but it was likely to be after the war ended.
I sighed, but nodded. It wasn't really that bad, I guess. Steve was a big, strong man, he'd be okay. Peggy seemed like a decent person, at least, so I didn't mind having her look after me while Steve was away. It was certainly a much better alternative than being with my Headmaster. That man was the worst of them all. A liar, a torturer, a heartless bastard all bundled in one was what the Headmaster was. I was just glad to be far away from him.
Sorry, this chapter's kind of short, but there will be longer ones later!
