Enjolras POV
"Enjolras," I heard Eponine call for me, I felt a strange anger build inside me for no reason, I turned my head to show I was listening. "Thank you for helping me."
"It was no trouble," I replied lowly, "it wasn't as if Marius was going to do anything," I told myself as I opened the door to exit. My own comment surprised me, was this why I was angry? Am I jealous? How do you know if your jealous? What does jealousy even feel like? No I'm just tired and stressed and worried and acting foolish, I need to rest or read. I pinched the bridge of my nose and continued down the stairs.
"Is Apollo feeling ill?!" Grantier slurred ad stood up leaning against his chair.
"Ill?! Who is ill?!" Joly asked in panic covering his nose and mouth with is handkerchief.
"No one is sick Joly," I calmed the hypochondriac down and sat in my usual seat to pick up on my book that had been sitting there since last night. It was quite hard to concentrate. The boys seemed to be louder than usual, Grantier and Jehan were on the table rehearsing poems and singing songs; but even that wasn't the problem, it was the brunette upstairs, I couldn't stop thinking about how hurt she was and how alone she was for all these years, then at the opportune moment that blasted Marius had to swoop in and be her prince charming, I couldn't understand why my blood was boiling.
"Enjolras!" I looked up at the source of my name.
"What?" I was annoyed and it showed, but as usual Marius didn't pick it up on my displeasure.
"Have you gone to see Eponine?" he asked with hope in is eyes, did Marius care for Eponine like she did for him? Did he forget about Cosette?
"Why are you concerned with whom I visit?" I inquired cautiously.
"Because only you and Eponine know what Cosette said and I have reason to believe Eponine knows all the facts," he replied simply.
"Marius! You are a blind idiot!" I stated standing so quickly my chair toppled over; Marius backed away slowly. "How dare you! Eponine is injured upstairs recovering and you have the audacity to question me about questioning her about Cosette!" the Cafe grew quiet and they stared. I knew why I was upset, but what compelled me to make a scene, I haven't a clue.
"What's going on?" Eponine's voice came from the stairs, Marius and I turned our heads to see her, the boys were enjoying the show from their seats.
"Dearest Eponine!" Marius cried as he went over to her. My shoulders tensed at his display, he was holding her hands and looking pitiful. "I simply asked if I could see you if you were feeling better," I saw Eponine's eyes light up at that statement, "so I could ask you what happened with Cosette , since I didn't have the chance to last night, but Enjolras blew me to pieces," and as soon as her eyes lit up they dimmed again.
"I see no problem with that Enjolras," she addressed me, as if that didn't shock me enough she said, "I'll tell you what you want to know," I felt my jaw slacken then drop. I quickly recovered myself clenching my jaw.
"If you gentlemen will excuse me it is getting late and I must be going," with that I stormed out the Cafe and into the streets, my roots.
"Enjolras," I heard one of the boys call before I closed the door.
Courfeyrac's POV
We all saw Enjolras's jaw drop at the beginning of Eponine's sentence, but when she agreed to talk to Marius about Cosette, (we all know she's in love with him) his eyes practically popped out of his head.
"Enjolras," I called after him because he had no where to go, he lived above the Cafe and Combeferre's house was in another town, but my brother made no sign that he even heard me.
"Did I just win a fight with the almighty Enjolras," Marius was ready to boast about his 'victory' when I opened my mouth to say something, but Grantier beat me to it.
"No Marius you did not just win a fight, in fact if Eponine hadn't come down you would have been in the water with sharks, the only reason Enjolras left was because he didn't want to pummel you into a miserable, pathetic, sad excuse for a man with his words; by the time he would have been done you would have been in a corner crying for your mother while rocking back and forth." Grantier told him in the most sober voice he could muster, he had, after all, drank six bottles of wine by himself. Marius stared at him shocked and gaping like a fish.
"All I have to say is you better not be late tomorrow or else Enjolras will really have your head," Combeferre added while pushing his glasses up the bridge of his nose. All the boys nodded and carried on with what they were doing.
Eponine's POV
I was asleep when I heard a loud crash and shouting from the Cafe below, at first I thought a riot had started, but then I only heard Enjolras's voice. When I went down I saw Enjolras's posture tense and threatening like and Marius backing away from him and I decided to make my presence known. Both men looked at me, then Marius ran to me and told me what happened.
I was overjoyed and angry when he told me that he wanted to see me and Enjolras stopped him, however my anger dissipated when he told me he wanted to ask about Cosette. I agreed to tell him the information and Enjolras looked like he had been told the French flag's colors were really green, yellow, and black. He stormed out, then Marius made a witty comment. I wasn't completely sure what had happened, my head was pounding, but Grantier put Marius in his place, then I brought him back to my, well Enjolras's, bedroom to talk.
I told him everything I knew about Cosette, then when he started talking a thought dawned on me. This is Enjolras's bedroom, where was he going? Did he have another place to go?
"Marius, does Enjolras have another place to sleep?" I asked him in the middle of his sentence.
"Eponine," he wined, "have you not been listening?" he asked irritated.
"Marius!" I exclaimed.
"I don't think he does Eponine I think this is his apartment," he replied, "now back to the marvelous subject of Cosette I have another letter for her, but don't worry it can be delivered tomorrow, when you are feeling better," how generous of you Prince Marius, I thought. I was starting to get annoyed by Marius and a voice in my head was pulling me away from him, I no longer felt so strongly as I did, but why?
"Okay Monsieur Marius, thank you for giving me the day to rest," I said sarcastically.
"It is no problem Eponine," he replied sincerely, he didn't pick up on my sarcasm.
I faked a yawn, "well I am tired, it's been a long day, do you mind if I rest?" I asked slightly irritated.
"Of course I need my best messenger to be at her best tomorrow," then he left. I grabbed my pillow and screamed into it. How can he even think it is okay to say a thing like that?! Because you let him think it's okay to treat you like dirt, you silly school girl. You didn't even go to school. My subconscious answered, and now Enjolras is probably outside somewhere while you're in his bed, it continued, I let out another scream, I thought about going after Enjolras, but in my state I'd probably pass out and Enjolras would find me then bring me back here. With those final thoughts I fell asleep.
Enjolras's POV
I had no idea where I was going. I was walking for about an hour thinking. I had no where to rest or clear my head, Combeferre's house was on the other side of town and my bed was taken, not that I mind, but none the less I was homeless at the moment so I decided to make my way to the Cafe.
It took another hour but I reached it, the lights were dimming so I jogged to reach it before the doors closed.
"Monsieur Martineau!" I called to the shop owner waving my arm before he closed the door.
"Gabriel! What are you doing outside at this hour?" he asked rushing me in. Yon Martineau was a short old man, about four eleven, he was close to sixty years old and had the thickest mustache any of us had seen. He lived with his wife, Bernadette, and his three daughters Adeline, the oldest, twenty, Petrona, sixteen , and Francois, ten. Martineau took all of us boys under his wing, so to speak, and he let's us hold our meetings even if it meant him loosing some of his costumers.
"No doubt you heard the ruckus upstairs?" I stated more than asked.
"Of course it was hard not to mon soleil," he chuckled, "what was that about anyway?"
"Well, you know Marius, right?" I asked already knowing the answer; talking with Yon like this reminded me of our old conversations when we first met.
"Yes, yes the oblivious one," he stated.
"And you've noticed the shadow that has followed him in twice?" I checked, Martineau nodded and gestured for me to continue. "Well that shadow was my friend from long ago and now just because Marius was nice to her in her moment of need she loves him!" Martineau raised his finger to say something, but I went on, "but not only that Marius is in love with my sister, whom I haven't seen in years, and he has Eponine running errands to deliver his love letters to Cosette like the blasted idiot he is!" I finished my rant. Martineau was chuckling.
"What is it? What is so funny? I don't believe I told a joke," I looked at him bewildered.
"You are my dear boy," he was talking through his chuckles; I gave him a puzzled look. "You are feeling jealousy, son."
"W-h-hat?" I was at a loss for words, a rare thing. "I am not jealous," I mustered trying to compose myself, "I am just worried about Eponine getting hurt."
"Okay Gabriel," he patted my hand, "I need to go to bed now, I'm not as young as I used to be," he smiled then disappeared up the stairs.
