Disclaimer: I do not own Les Miserables.
It was a small field of grass that no one really noticed. It was littered with wild flowers and a single rock in the middle of it all. I was glad I had found this place since my drunken father wasn't going to do anything for her. I kneeled at the rock; I let a small smile show on my face at what was carved messily in the rock by an old pocket knife I still have with me.
FANTINE ENJOLRAS
1773-1823
LOVING MOTHER
Every year I have to re-carve it since it gets weathered down.
"Hello mother," I addressed her, almost expecting her to answer. "Another year down, although I guess I don't have to tell you that," a single tear left my eye on its own accord.
"You don't have to worry Courfeyrac will be here later, he likes to let me visit first. Probably so your name looks new to him, almost as if time hasn't moved; like you really didn't leave us nine years ago.
"I found Cosette mother, she's beautiful mother she really grew up these past year. The only complaint is that she fell in love with Marius, I told you about him, I'm afraid he might hurt her or take her away from me even though I just found her," I laughed bitterly, "but that's not all. I've had a crazy few days, Eponine showed up and she's in love with Marius and Marius is blind to her. I was injured carrying a note to Cosette from him because he wanted to send Eponine into the night with the letter, then when Eponine was hurt he wanted to ask her questions about Cosette. I don't understand it. And I will be sure to show Cosette this place.
"Well that's enough of that. I have another rally today. I hope to inspire more people or else this revolution will become a blood bath, but I have an indestructible plan. You will not be seeing any of my friends any time soon nor will you have to come and visit Courfeyrac in the battle field. I must talk to Combeferre since he is the only one who will understand my situation and he will help me. I know it will not be fair to the other men, but I refuse to have their blood on my hands. If I get punished for that I do not mind." I heard some dry grass crunch behind me. I spun to my feet and pulled my pistol out and pointed to the direction of the noise.
"Who's there?!" I thundered the best I could. I cocked back the hammer on my pistol. "Come out!" I ordered. There was nothing, no noise. My visit was over and probably because of some small animal, but one can't be too paranoid.
"I will be back later, maybe after Courfeyrac. With flowers," I told her and left cautiously.
Eponine's POV
I slowly followed Enjolras as he left the Cafe. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know what your thinking, 'just leave him alone, this is stalkerish,' but I was worried and curious. After walking half an hour, we reached a green field with wild flowers a few blocks behind the Cafe. It was a beautiful sight, unlike anything I have ever seen. The field had a single rock with a small engraving, I couldn't make it out.
I stood behind one of the only trees in this small valley and Enjolras kneeled at the rock and started talking. I was shocked to hear his emotions on our awkward love triangle and his confusion. What really perked my ears up was his secret plan about the revolution, how did he plan- Oh! The escape route but the boys would never forgive him I have to tell Combeferre and tell him to say no to his plan. As I went to leave I stepped on a patch of dry grass (just my luck) and Enjolras spun around, pistol in hand demanding I show myself. I stayed so quiet, when he left I didn't realize I was holding my breath. I ran another way to the Cafe so Enjolras wouldn't get there before me.
Combeferre's POV
The bell above the door chimed loudly tearing me away from my Coffee and I embarrassingly had four cups already. Eponine barged in the Cafe asking if Enjolras was here.
"No he isn't," I told plainly pushing my glasses up the bridge of my nose.
"Good, can I talk to you?" she asked quietly, I nodded and stood from the wooden chair.
"What is this about?" I inquired.
"Enjolras is going to ask you to get everyone out of the barricade through a storm sewage," she relayed her knowledge to me. I didn't see a big issue with this, but I could see why she would warn me.
"Okay?" I told her to go on.
"I need you to stop him," she said exasperated.
"Why is that?" I asked.
"Because he can't just lead these boys to battle then rob them of it, they could end up hating him!" she exclaimed in a whisper.
"Okay Eponine," I patted the small girl's shoulder.
We sat back in our chairs and Enjolras arrived. He went over to Courfeyrac and whispered something. I wasn't curious so I turned my head back into my book.
Enjolras's POV
The walk back seemed shorter as I soon reached the Cafe. I entered and made my way to my brown haired brother.
"Everything's ready, but I forgot the flowers," I informed him, "Can you get some? Remember she-"
"She doesn't like lilies, she prefers Carnations or Daisies," he finished for me; it was the same every year. I straightened and patted him on the shoulder.
I checked the clock on the wall, two thirty. I went over to Combeferre, I tapped his shoulder lightly and motioned to the door. He followed me outside.
"Combeferre, I have a very important matter to discuss with you," I said low.
"I'd be worried if it wasn't," he joked, I rolled my eyes in response.
"Look Combeferre, you've known me for a long time," his face grew serious and he pushed his glasses up his nose, "I have never asked for any favors, but I am now and I need you help." I paused crossing my arms, straightening my posture, and clenched my jaw. It wasn't an easy thing for me to ask for help, but this is not for me, this is for my brothers.
"I know that this revolution will be a one way journey for some of the men, but I refuse to have the boys' blood on my hands," I looked at them, "especially Gavroche's."
"What do you need Enjolras? You already brought them this far. They won't go," he explained his, arms crossed.
"I realize that, which is why I'm talking to you. You understand and I know Courfeyrac wouldn't stand for my idea.
"I found a storm sewage, the Les Amis can fit through one at a time, so I need you to get Bahorel on board with this so he can help. What do you think?" I asked slightly worried.
"I think it's brilliant, but the boys won't come easy," he thought out loud.
"I know. Let's go back though." I said noticing the boys starting to look along with Eponine.
"Wait," he put his hand on my arm. "Eponine somehow knows what you were thinking and asked me to say no."
"What? Eponine knows!" I exclaimed in a whisper.
"Yeah so we have to act like I rejected the idea." he explained barely moving his mouth.
"Okay," I copied his strategy. Combeferre shook his head and I got ready for my part.
"I can't let you do this," he acted.
"And why not the last time I checked this was my revolution!" I argued then I stormed into the cafe as did Combeferre.
Eponine's POV
All of us sat down when we saw the Captain and his lieutenant storm in. Combeferre must have declined him. Thank goodness he stuck with my plan, I know the boys wouldn't have wanted to be taken against their will out of the battle.
"It's almost four," Enjolras announced slipping on his wine colored coat on, "does everyone know what they are doing?" the boys nodded and stood to follow him out the door.
I left to deliver a note to Cosette and I met with them back at Lamarque's house. The boys were setting up a platform when I got there. Enjolras stood on it and waited for the people to show up as Marius climbed the stair to stand beside him. Enjolras looked at him harshly, but held his tongue since peopled started to show up. I could see the transition in his face from annoyed to fierce.
"Something's gotta happen now, something's gonna give," the crowd started to get ready and Enjolras took it in like fuel.
"Where are the leaders of the land?! Where are the swells who run the show?!" Enjolras bursted moving around his make shift stage.
"Only one man- and that's Lamarque, speaks for the people here below," Marius added, lacking the power Enjolras had.
"As you all suffer here in the shadows of poverty they are going to their opera and eating deserts!" Enjolras exclaimed with fire.
"Yeah!" there were many murmurs throughout the crowd and nods. Off to the side Courfeyrac talked to one of the doctors coming out of the estate; he quickly run on the stage and whispered to Marius.
"Lamarque is ill and fading fast, they say he won't last the week," Marius relayed to the excited crowd and the outbursted.
"With all the anger in the land, how long before the judgment day? Before we cut the fat ones down to size?" he roared thrusting his fist into the air, "before the barricades arise?" after that statement the police came on their horses and pushed everyone back.
Enjolras jumped of stage as did Marius and all the boy spread throughout the crowd and started yelling.
"Vive la France, Vive la France!" they all yelled in unison. The police started closing in on them; the boys started running but Enjolras stayed yelling. I rushed over to him and pulled him away by the collar.
"You won't do any good in jail!" I yelled over the horse hooves. He must have agreed because he turned around, facing my direction, grabbed my hand and ran to the Cafe.
