Jedediah POV

Chapter 15: The eternal alliance

6 years later

Today it's exactly 33 years ago when Octavius and I met each other for the first time. From the first meeting we saw how different we were and from that first day we started a war that still lasts. We fight battles whenever we get a chance. Every cowboy tries to make the best joke about the Romans, while every Roman tries to humiliate us. We call each other the worst thing we can think of. Octavius and I are part of this of course. We scold, we humiliate each other and we fight many times.

But, not like the other cowboys and Romans, we don't hate each other anymore. For 13 years we have a secret alliance. We both never thought our eternal alliance would last for so long. Not because others would find out, but because we were both afraid the other would be betrayal. Now we meet at least one time in the week, when we train with the sword. It's something I still enjoy doing after 6 years. This time I waited for him, lying against the only tree in the entire Wild West. A few months after we agreed we would meet each other once a week Octavius started to complain. He didn't like the idea that I came to his place so many times, when he was never able to see my country. So I took him, to avoid even worse complaining, to the Wild West. Like always he was impressed with everything he saw. That day we agreed we would come to each other in turn and today it was his turn to come to me.

"Greetings Jedediah," I heard Octavius suddenly. I slowly opened my eyes, but I could only see the black of my hat. Before I could do anything Octavius hit the edge of my hat and dumped the sword on my legs.

"Stop dawdling and get up," I heard Octavius saying above me.

"I don't feel like it today, Octavius," I said and I just kept on lying against the tree. Octavius made a disapproving sound.

"I can see that," he said still disapproved. "Usually you are not that slow." Slowly and kinda lazy I sat up. That stupid Roman was very kind again.

"Like you're always so good," I said and hoped Octavius didn't hear me.

"I heard you," he said with an annoyed tone. But I knew he enjoyed the way he could talk to me right now. I struggled like I didn't care, but I knew he knew I found it really irritated.

Suddenly we heard a loud sound not so far away from us. It came from the Wild West when I heard a familiar voice yelling my name.

"Cecil," Octavius said and he sounded angry. I nodded one time and stood up slowly.

"He just can't live without us," I joked and swept the sand of me. Immediately Octavius didn't look so angry anymore. "I think it's time to go," I said after that and looked at Octavius.

Octavius nodded and said: "I'm sure we'll meet again on the other side of the glass."

The words were encouraging to me and told me I wouldn't be alone facing the giant. With some fresh courage I walked towards the yelling.

"Jedediah, there you are," Jacob said relieved when he saw me. "We have a little problem." I patted Jacob on his shoulder and tried to encourage him like Octavius had encourage me.

I took one step towards the giant who stood before my country. "What is it now?"

Two furious eyes looked at me and without any warning he grabbed me. We went to the Roman Empire were Octavius already waited for us. Before we knew it we were dumped at the table again.

"Okay," Cecil tried to say calm. "I'm sick of it. You two are gonna help us with the lions tonight. Otherwise…,"

"I don't think so," Octavius said calm and annoyed.

"Indeed," I said. "We have much better things to do."

"You don't even let me finish," Cecil said not so calm anymore. "You two…"

"No matter what the treat will be tonight," Octavius interrupted Cecil again. "The answer is still no."

"Indeed," I said again. "We still have better things to do."

Cecil took a deep breath before he continued. "Listen. All the time we have a big problem with a monkey and…"

"Monkey?" Octavius interrupted him for the third time. "And suddenly it's all about a monkey. Which monkey?"

"I think he is talking about himself," I said serious and struggled.

"And now it is enough!" Cecil said impending. "I'm so sick of you!"

We were grabbed again and he took us away. All the cowboys and Romans looked at us behind the glass, also worried and amazed. None of us knew where Cecil would take us and I never expected it to be this bad. Cecil walked with us through the building, through halls we had never seen before. A man with as moustache looked from his horse amazed at us.

"Who are those little creatures?" he asked curious. Of course is 'little creature' an insult, but because of the way he said it I didn't feel insult at all.

"These are two very annoying miniatures and I'm gonna throw them outside now," Cecil answered.

"What?" the moustache horseman said and got of his horse. "But Cecil, you know what happens when the sun rises, don't you?"

"Don't worry, I will take them back inside on time," Cecil said and kept on walking. "And they just deserve it."

"But it's freezing outside. You'll throw them in the middle of a snowstorm."

It didn't matter what the man said. Cecil opened the door and throw us literally outside.
