Octavius POV
Chapter 16: A freezing night
Together we fell in the white hill of snow. Immediately I felt all the warmth slip away from my body. When I was finally out of the snow I saw Jedediah already standing tall.
"You idiot," he yelled angry at the big, already closed door. "Are you drunk, or something? We could easily fall on the stairs or on a stone. We all know you cannot throw well, stupid…"
"Jedediah," I yelled through his river of words.
"What?!" Jedediah yelled back and looked angry at me.
"It's no use, so stop shouting," I said. I looked around me, looking for a place to take shelter for the cold wind.
"What?" Jedediah said again. "I am definitely right to yell right now. He just throw us out." I decided to ignore him and try to survive the night. I tried to get it a little warmer with wrapping my cape around myself.
From a distance I saw how Jedediah tried to climb up the first staircase. He jumped, tried to grab it and fell on the ground again. But he kept on trying. After a while he tried to take a sprint before he jumped against the stair, trying to grab the edge of the stair. But of course this plan also failed and Jedediah fell to the ground again. I sighed one time and walked towards him.
"Jedediah," I started. "Could you just stop. It's not going to work."
"Maybe it will work if you helped me," Jedediah answered still angry. Jedediah stood up and didn't even bother to wipe the snow of his clothes. "Come on, you can push me up," he said and was ready to try it again.
"Jedediah, I'm cold," I admitted and I wrapped my cape even closer around my body. Jedediah turned around and looked straight in my eyes.
"Of course it's cold. It's freezing!" he shouted in my face. "Stop whining and take it like a man! And what did you expect anyway, when you're walking around in a skirt."
I didn't expect any sympathy, but I did hope he would at least not yell at me or humiliate me. I walked away from him again and tried to find some shelter by staying close at a big statue. A cold breeze came across and cut through my thin cape on my skin. I can't remember I ever been through a freezing night like this. I just stood there, huddled and shivering. Whole my body was hurting. Accept for my feet, I couldn't feel them for a while then. After some time I also felt exhausted. The only thing that kept me awake was the yelling and cursing form Jedediah behind me.
"Octavius," I heard Jedediah suddenly yelling behind me. "Hello! Octavius! I'm calling you ten times already." With one tug he turned me around. Within a few seconds his facial expression changed from anger to astonishment and after that worried.
"Octavius, are you feeling alright?" Jedediah asked suddenly softly. "Your lips are purple and…"
"I'm alright," I said with difficulty. But Jedediah shook his head. He surprised me when he pulled of both his gloves. Without asking me he grabbed my hands underneath my cape.
"Your hands are also purple," he said in a way he never had spoken before. "Stupid Roman, don't you know how dangerous cold can be? Before you know it you're frozen." He putted on his gloves on my hands. After that he looked down and pointed at my feet.
"Your feet are purple too," he said reproachful. I also looked down and I saw my feet beneath some snow were indeed purple. Before I knew it Jedediah pulled of his boots and threw them before my feet. "Take them," he said shortly. My socks are warm enough."
I did what he said, pulled of my sandals and got in his boots. I could feel the difference immediately. I smiled at Jedediah and nodded gratefully, but of course Jedediah ignored this and didn't smile back. It was too cold to think about a reason why he would help me. I just let it happen, I didn't really care back then. I was glad with his help.
"We should take shelter beneath the bushes over there," Jedediah said and leaded the way.
When I took the first step, I felt there it was wrong. I was barely strong enough to stand, but I still walked behind Jedediah through the snow. I refused to ask Jedediah for help. Maybe because I thought he already had done enough for me. Or maybe I still felt a little bit insulted because of what he said earlier this night. Just when I wanted to push away my stubbornness it was too late and it became black before my eyes.
It's a short chapter, but pretty proud of it. ^^
Please, let me know what you think about it in a review or something. I will be grateful. ^^
