Octavius POV
Chapter 26: The wild barbarians
I'm not sure, but I think I saw a little smile appear on Jedediah's face when Agrippa and Jacob shook hands. But after I warned him the giants could return any moment he looked as serious as always.
"We can't stay here, he knows where we are," Jedediah said thoughtful.
"We should take the risk and leave this place immediately," I replied to him.
"It will be okay," Agrippa said still smiling. "I have a guardian by my side now." Again a smile appeared on the Jacob's tense face.
"I would like to be your guardian," the boy said smiling. "But I also need someone to protect me."
"Not a problem at all, I will be your guardian," Agrippa replied.
I looked at the two men really surprised. How could it be that Agrippa and Jacob got such a good bond after one night, while Jedediah and I needed years to trust each other? Maybe it's because Agrippa and Jacob are forced to work together because of us and our conditions. Or maybe because Jacob isn't so stubborn like Jedediah and Agrippa isn't that proud like me…
"Come on, we should go," Jedediah said and interrupted my thoughts.
We left our hiding place carefully and observant. Maybe one of the giants was hiding somewhere waiting for us to come out. When we were sure it was safe, we started to run and searched for a new hiding place.
We turned some corners and suddenly we saw some other giants. They wore brown clothes and brown hats, were armed with swords and also wore armour. Because of their faces and hair you could see they had to come from the east. One of those men, seemed to be their leader, looked at us for a while.
"Jedediah, I don't trust those men," I said before Jedediah would walk past them. "Who knows what those wild barbarians want."
"I always thought I was the barbarian here," Jedediah said and just kept on walking. I walked behind Jedediah, but I made sure Agrippa and Jacob would stay behind me. When we were almost past the giants, one of them said something in a language I didn't understand.
"What?" Jedediah asked and looked above to the giant.
Again the man said something the four of us didn't understand.
"Goodbye," was the only replied Jedediah gave and wanted to past the giants. But then the giant grabbed Jedediah, while he said something in his own language again. I immediately drew my sword and pointed it challenging to the big man.
"Let Jedediah go!" I said from the ground. The man replied in his incomprehensible language, but he place Jedediah carefully on the palm of his hand, so I also lowered my sword.
"I don't understand a word of what you're saying," Jedediah said with a calm voice. "But I would appreciate it if you could put me back on the ground."
The man answered in his strange language.
"Like I said: I don't understand what you're saying!" Jedediah said, but not so friendly anymore.
"Maybe we should let Jacob talk to him," Agrippa said suddenly. "He became friends with a monkey and a lion, so a man nobody understands shouldn't be a problem."
"He can try if he wants to, but I rather have nothing to do with those idiots," Jedediah said almost angry.
The giant said something again, but now he sounded offended and a little irritated.
"Jedediah," so I said. "I get the feeling they do understand what we say."
"So why don't they talk back in English then?" Jedediah said pretty irritated.
"Oh well, I think it's better if we let Jacob talk to those giants now," Agrippa, who also knew Jedediah was getting angry, said.
"I don't think that's…," Jacob said softly.
"Fine, talk to him," Jedediah said to the giant and pointed at Jacob. I was sure Jedediah hadn't heard Jacob. The man said something weird again, but then he brought his hand to the ground, so Jedediah could walk of the palm of his hand. Jacob didn't move and looked insecure at the ground.
But then the man said something again, while pointing first at Jacob and then at his hand again. Hesitating and scared Jacob stepped on the giant's hand. Too late Jedediah saw the fear written on Jacob's face. I stopped Jedediah just before he could pull Jacob off the hand again.
"He will be all right," I reassured him softly. In the mean while Jacob was already high up the air and the giant was talking to him.
"Sorry," he started scared. "But I also don't understand what you're talking about. But we are hiding for three giants: Cecil, Reginald and Gus."
"Cecil… Reginald… and Gus," the man repeated. "The night guards."
"Yes, the night guards," Jacob said suddenly enthusiastic. "You know them?"
The man said something we didn't understand, but now he sounded angry and made a fist from his other hand.
"You are angry at the night guards too?" Jacob asked to the whole group. All the man nodded angrily, while their leader started to yell and waved his other hand around.
"Eh… I still don't understand what you are saying," Jacob said while the giant finished yelling. "But we are fleeing for those night guards at the moment. You see, they want to use us like lion bait." Suddenly the big man looked shocked. "We have to find a save hiding place before dawn, otherwise they will catch us and then we are in huge problems."
The big man shook his head and said something uncomprehendingly again.
"What does he want?" Jedediah asked to Jacob.
"I have no idea," Jacob answered.
"Can you help us?" I asked to the giant. I could try at least. But the big man nodded and pointed at me. He said some words I didn't understand again.
"Serious? You are really willing to help us?" Jacob asked enthusiastic again. The giant nodded a few times. "Truly deeply thank you," Jacob said with a nice smile. "But can I ask for your name now?"
"Attila the Hun," the man answered immediately.
"Good," Jacob said smiling. "Those men are Jedediah, Octavius and Marcus. And my name is Jacob."
Lolz, I confess I am in love with Jacob. ;P But seriously now, tell me if I make him too perfect, I'm always scared I do and I don't want to.
