Jedediah POV

Chapter 32: The new night guard

The gate was open again, but nobody bothered it anymore. They were all used to it, after it happened so many times before. But I was tensed the whole time. I had to look down every second of the night, just to check if the Romans were there or not. But every time I looked I didn't see any Romans, but it didn't make me feel at ease. Octavius told me he would attack me the first time he would have the chance. Maybe he waited for the best moment, maybe it was just an empty threat.

I almost lost it, because of the nerves I had. If I could I would crawl through the secret tunnel and asked that stupid Roman what he was waiting for. I looked outside one more time and suddenly I saw the new night guard sitting on our couch. From the look of it, it seemed he already had some troubles during the night. I could see how the Maya's slowly walked closer to the night guard and I knew exactly what would happen. It was a perfect opportunity to let out the nerves.

"William," I said, while I ran towards him. "Make sure the boys are ready." I pointed at the giant, who still sat on the couch. Immediately William understood what I meant and a cold smile appeared on his face. "You take care of the train," I said to another boy, who also immediately followed my orders.

I saw how the giant looked at our little city and I jumped on Girl, my spotted horse. I was just in time, because the giant already fell in our land. Finally I had a giant where I wanted them to be: tight up and with his head on my railroad.

"Hihaa," I shouted totally worked up. "It's our time, boys! Get him!" William and his group came from behind towards us on their horses. They swung their lasso's over the giant and on the other side they fasten the ropes tight, just like I ordered them. But then that rich idiot with his tall hat had to come, just to complain we all wanted to get out of this box. Of course I agree with him, but he still annoys me a bit. I'm namely wondering if he also agrees with himself.

"Fire up the iron horse, boys," I said and already ignored the rich crock. I could hear the train coming.

"Hey, blondie?" the giant suddenly asked me.

"The name is Jedediah," I said back. I wasn't planning to let this giant stand above me.

"All right, Jedediah. Stop the train, please," the giant asked me.

"That's a big no-can-do, Crackerjack," I said still calm.

"What's going on here, huh?" the helpless giant asked.

"Somebody has to pay," I said without showing the anger I felt inside.

"Pay for what?"

"I don't know, just pay," I yelled angry. That giant should've paid attention during the speech of the tall head? "Now stop whining and just take it like a man."

"Seriously, stop the train," the giant almost begged me.

"All right, stop the train," I said, but all my boys already knew I didn't mean it.

"Thank you," the giant sighed.

"Now, full speed ahead and ram him! Split his head like a watermelon!" I shouted and the giant looked frightened at his other side. The train collide to his head, but there came nothing more than a soft "au".

"For crying out loud," I said complaining. I wasn't disappointed because the hit didn't do any damage to the giant. I expected nothing more and the fright in his eyes were already good enough for me. It was far worse that the train fell on his side. It would take a lot of effort to get that train back on the rails again. Before I noticed it, the giant start to break lose. My Girl startled and ran off, so I fell of her back.

"I got him. I got him. I got him, guys," a brave fellow, who still held on to the giant's shoulder, said. But it hit me when I noticed the brave fellow was Jacob and he flew of the shoulder.

And to make it all worse suddenly Octavius's army stood before my land. I have no idea how he could form his army so quickly.

"Prepare the catapults," I could hear Octavius say.

"Ho, Octavius, hold on," I called his name on purpose. "This isn't your fight. This giant here is on our land."

"Hey, hey, little guy. Sorry, but look... I'm not a giant. I'm just an average-sized...," the giant dared to say to me.

"Don't talk down to me," I said angry back to the giant.

"I'm not a giant, guys. All right? You guys are really little." His comments became even more annoying to me.

"We may be small, but our hearts are large. Metaphorically speaking," Octavius said to the giant. I think I wasn't the only one who got tired of this idiot.

"Don't take it the wrong way. I'm saying you're miniatures," the giant continues with his stupid comments.

"Silence," Octavius shouted suddenly. "The Roman Empire knows no boundaries." Something in what he said scared me and I feared the worst.

"Don't you do it, son," I said to him.

"Octavius?" I tried, but I knew it was no use.

"Unleash hell!" I heard the words, but it took a moment before I really understood what they meant. Arrows with fire and fire balls flew through the air. And then I noticed Jacob, badly wounded, laying on the ground. That giant did this to him. And that giant now fled with the same man who kinda betrayed me a long time ago.

"That's right, you better run boy," I yelled when he was already gone. "You hear Jedediah? That moustachioed horseman isn't always going to be there to protect you, you hear me?" Even after my little outburst my anger was still there. "William, take care for Jacob and those Romans," I yelled through the noises of the battle. "I'm going to get that giant."

~Jedie & Ockie~

The giant just took me back to the box. My hunt on the giant was one big disaster. I found him really quickly and I climbed up with the help of his clothes. But when he noticed me, he started to manhandle me, just like Cecil always does. And he also found out my guns don't work. But when I was back I gladly saw how Jacob stood tall again. And... William captured that stupid Roman.

"I wasn't sure what to do with this guy, so I just put him in the stockade," William explained to me and for once I didn't mind his cold smile. I looked down at the proud Roman and he looked angry, but straight, back at me. He knew he had lost this battle, but no matter what I would do to him, he would deny he lost the war. So I had to break his proud.

"I think this place is perfect for him," I said, while I crossed my arms before my chest and slowly felt how the morning came.
