Octavius POV

Chapter 33: The eternal war

I don't know how it is possible, but the next day I woke up and I just stood in the Roman Empire again. Last night Jedediah had put me in the stockade. If I had the chance I would've hit him on the smirk on his face, but I couldn't even move and remained calm. Most of the time I stay calm, unlike the barbarian who lives on the other side of the wall.

"Get the battle ram," I said to Agrippa, who stood beside me for a while. "We're going to make a tunnel to the Wild West."

I still won't use the secret tunnel. It doesn't matter if I'm angry at him or not, I still can't use the tunnel without feeling a traitor myself. Jedediah was able to make the secret tunnel all on his own, so the Romans would succeed too. We were just ramming the wall with the battle ram when the new night guard, Larry I think, came.

"Hey, what's going on over here?" the giant asked me.

"We expend or we die," was my short explanation and ignored him again. I could hear how the giant talked to Jedediah and I tried to not be interesting in their conversation.

And suddenly the giant went back to me. "Listen, Octavus. You gotta stop that."

"It's Octavius, Mary," I said bored back to him. I wasn't planning to waste my time to this man.

"Okay, you know what. Fine," he muttered. "Here you go. This is what happens." He grabbed me by my helmet and it hurt like always.

"You cannot do this. I'm a Roman general, I have rights," I said strict and calm. But I could still feel the panic rise inside of me. I never want to be hunted down by some giants again. When Larry also took Jedediah, he immediately lost his calm and start to shout again. Larry put us down a lot more careful then Cecil, Reginald or Gus ever did, but still...

"I told you, I don't like to be manhandled," Jedediah yelled angry.

"No, I will manhandle you, Jedediah," the giant yelled angry back at him. "Now listen. Guys, what is your problem? Why can't you just get along?" We looked angry at each other for a short moment. We both had the fights of last time fresh in our memories.

"Look, we're men. We fight, okay. That's what we do," Jedediah replied. He didn't even tell a little part of the whole story and I gave him a quick glance. But I thought it would be fine this way and I continued with it.

"It's kinda how we pass the time," I said like the war meant nothing.

"You're a giant. A freak if you will. We can't expect you understand that," Jedediah said and for once I agreed with him again. The giant would never understand the whole story.

"You guys got the whole room to run around in. You don't have to be near each other."

The words surprised me and because of my astonishment I looked at Jedediah again.

"Wait... You mean," I said amazed.

"You're gonna let us out?" Jedediah said soft and truly surprised. "What and just... Just roam free...?"

"Yeah," the giant said and finally I believed he really meant it. "Yeah, I might if you promise to behave. That means not fireballs, no explosions. Okay?"

"You have my word, my liege," I said and bowed a little, while I put my hand on my heart. I couldn't think of a better way to show him my gratitude.

"Yeah, no... No problemo, Gigantor," Jedediah said almost stuttering.

"Eh, my name is Larry first of all," Larry said to Jedediah. "Okay Jed? So I call you Jed. I don't call you Tiny, right?"

"What's that supposed to mean?" Jedediah asked and he sounded annoyed again.

"Hey Teeny. How does that sound?" the giant said and for a moment he made me think of the old night guards again.

"I don't like it," Jedediah said annoyed. "It hurts my feelings."

"Okay, Gigantor makes me feel like some sort of freak, so..."

And suddenly I knew how I could show him my gratitude. "I don't. I just call you Larry," I said and I meant it.

"Don't be a kiss-ass," Larry said to me. I didn't even know what he meant by it, but by the way he spoke and pointed at me, I knew it wasn't something to be proud of. And I also noticed how Jedediah glanced at me. "Look, I'm trusting you guys, all right," the giant continued. Jedediah and I both looked to the ground. We both couldn't believe a giant said this to us. "And if you don't do what I say, you end up like your little buddies in the Mayan world over there. Locked up. Take a look. Do they look happy?"

Jedediah and I both turned around to look at the Maya's. We felt their pain.

"No," I said, while turning back to the giant.

"They look sad," Jedediah said soft.

"Because they can't do what they wanna do," the giant continued. "Now I'm letting you guys have a little bit of leash here. Don't choke me with it, okay? I gotta run. You guys play nice, okay? Okay. Good. Thanks." And he was gone and left me with Jedediah.

"He sees we have feelings too. He understands we just want to be free," Jedediah said still surprised. "Octavius, did you ever think to hear something like that from a night guard?"

"Don't call my name," I said and ignored his question. He immediately looked at me as an enemy again.

"You deserved it to be put in the stockade," he said and was almost angry.

"I warned you I would attack the next time I would have the chance," I said angry too. "Did you forget you destroyed my temple?"

"Your Roman gods are not real anyway," he said and suddenly spoke softly.

Something inside of me snapped and I hit him on his face before I knew it. "Do not call my name just for this night. I never want to hear you say my name ever again!" It took him a few seconds to understand what happened before he responded.

"Fine," he yelled back. "Get lost! And your alliance too!" After that he attacked me. We fought again and we kept on fighting. I forgot the entire world around me and I just wanted to see the cowboy crawl by my feet.

And suddenly there was a loud snap and we jumped away from each other, because of the fright.

"Sorry," Larry said, who suddenly stood before us again. And for the first time I noticed how our troops also fought on the flour. "What's going on? What happened here? I thought we had a deal."

"We will never coexist with these buffoons," I said angry and pointed to Jedediah.

"We're past words, Laredo," Jedediah shouted. "Now it's time to let Smith and Wesson do the talking."

"Ha, those guns don't even work," I said mockingly.

"Oh, they don't. Here, take a look at this," Jedediah said and suddenly he didn't yell anymore. I could feel a shock flowing through my entire body and for a moment it felt like everything was alright. For a moment it was like we were allies again and we could trust each other again. Because of this feeling I didn't think for a moment and took a step forwards to look at his guns.

But then he hit me hard with his gun on my helmet and I grabbed angry at his throat.

This eternal war would never come to an end.
