Octavius POV
Chapter 37: The outside ride
"Jedediah, this isn't a good idea," I said softly. I already wanted to turn around and walk away with the two horse, but I still waited for Jedediah.
"Come on, Ockie. It's an amazing idea," Jedediah said smiling back at me.
It has been two weeks since the disaster night when we crashed with the van, but I'm still not used to the nickname and his smile. But eventually it doesn't really matter what we call each other, we are friends now. The alliance is over, so we don't have to call each other's name to get help. It doesn't matter if I call him Jedie, Jedediah or barbarian, I'm still his friend. And I don't care if he calls me Ockie, Octavius or stupid Roman, he's still my friend. It's a lot easier, to be honest.
"Jedediah, just listen this one time," I said with a sigh. "This is not a good idea."
"Come on, we never gonna get a better chance," Jedediah said, busy with the way to the outside world. Because he was indeed planning to go outside the museum. He couldn't stop talking about it since we came back from outside. He wanted to explore the world outside of the museum and now he finally found a way. I would lie if I would say I'm not curious to the outside world, but unlike Jedediah I'm still able to think.
"Jedediah...," I said calm and patient, but I didn't even had a chance to finish my sentence.
"Octavius, this is our chance," Jedediah shouted enthusiastic. "So for once let's not think about the consequences, okay?"
"And what if we don't get back in time, because we get lost or something," I tried to stop Jedediah. "Then we will be ending as dust."
"Come on," Jedediah said and he didn't hide I annoyed him. "I never get lost. And yesterday you said you wanted to come with me out of the museum. We both know we can't stop ourselves to reach beyond our boundaries."
For a moment I just looked at him. It was true what he said, there is a part of us who always wants to expand. That's why we started the war, because expanding was kinda everything we had. The men of the civil war made peace and the lions and other animals walk freely through the museum without someone fearing them. So many things changed, but the Romans and the cowboys are still in war with each other. Fortunate we fought just a few battles, but the war still rages on. Because the war and expanding our boundaries is still everything our men have and we can't just take it away from them. How do you tell your people you became friends with the man who was their greatest enemy for 54 years?
"Octavius, let's stop thinking for once and just go," Jedediah said and jumped on his horse.
"Let's go then," I said and sighed again, while I also jumped on my horse.
"Yeah, let's go!" Jedediah spurred his horse and leaded his horse into the dark tunnel ahead of us. I followed slowly and hesitating.
"Are you sure this tunnel will lead us outside?" I asked and tried to hide the fear in my voice.
"Well, there comes a cold breeze from this tunnel and I know you have to go where the wind is coming when you're lost in a cave," he answered me.
"This is not a cave. This is a mental pipe build in a wall of the museum," I said resolute.
"Well... I'm sure the rule still counts," Jedediah said, but I could hear a little thrill in his voice. I would've looked straight in his eyes if I could, but it was too dark to see anything.
"You really have no idea where this tunnel leads us, isn't it?" I asked after a little moment.
"It doesn't matter, we are going to get outside tonight," Jedediah said suddenly self-assured. "Because I have a second plan. We also can take the back road, what means we just go through the garage. You remember, the way Teddy showed us last time." I shook my head, but I was also smiling a bit. Hopefully this barbarian never change.
It didn't take long before we left the mental pipe and went outside through the garage. Jedediah rode on his spotted mare, while I still rode on my black stallion. We rode fast during our outside ride and it was amazing what we saw. The buildings, the roads and the people we had to hide for every time. Everything was really interesting and I was glad I followed Jedediah into this. And finally we also went to the wreckage of the van. The snow was gone now, but besides that everything was the same. Jedediah and I stopped in the middle of the rubbishes.
"It's unbelievable that it has been two weeks ago," Jedediah said softly. "It feels like it has been years." I nodded one time. I knew exactly what he meant. We were friends for two weeks now, but it felt like we have been friends for years. And actually we were.
But suddenly something was wrong. First it was more like a feeling then something I knew, but then I looked up and I saw how the sky became brighter in the east.
"Jede-Jedediah," I said stuttering and pointed at the sky. Jedediah looked up too and his eyes grew wide from fright.
"Don't worry," Jedediah said after that. "Follow me and ride fast. Then we will be able to make it."
After he said that he spurred his horse to a gallop and I followed him immediately. We rode through the park and it didn't take long before we saw the museum in the distance. We only had to cross the road and Jedediah was just ahead of me, but suddenly the huge wheel of a van appeared before my horse. I startled, just like my horse. He pranced and I laid on the ground before I even knew it. The van was already gone and my horse galloped to the other side of the road. Jedediah went after him and was able to catch his veins, while I had to run for another van.
"Jedediah," I yelled to the other side of the road. "Take the horses and go!"
"But then...," Jedediah yelled back.
"No arguing this time!" I shouted strict, while I looked when I could cross the road. But the vans kept on coming. "I will be right behind you. Go, and take the horses to safety."
Jedediah nodded one time and rode away quickly. I finally saw the opportunity to cross the road and ran for it. I noticed how it became lighter around me. I noticed it and I knew I wouldn't make it, but I kept on running. Running towards the stairs, but I knew it wouldn't matter anymore.
Chapter 37 is done. We're near to the ending.
