Octavius POV
Chapter 39: A lonely person
"What's going on here?" was the first respond from a yelling cowboy.
"Wait, wait," Larry said secondly. "You two are already friends?" He looked satisfied and smiled a little. He was the only one who was actually happy about the situation.
"For a little while," Jedediah responded without looking at Larry. "You could also put us on the ground. You know, I think we have something to explain." All the cowboys and Romans looked astonished at us and they talked without listening.
"Of course," Larry said and his hand appeared before our feet. "But don't forget, you also have a lot to explain to me."
We stepped on his hand and he brought his carefully to the ground. I walked towards my men, while Jedediah walked towards his. Agrippa immediately walked towards me to greet me. "Octavius, I'm glad to see you're back."
"I suppose you knew then," Quintus said, who suddenly stood besides Agrippa. "You knew the two of them were friends?"
"I told you more than once that I didn't believe Jedediah killed Octavius," Agrippa said to the entire group of Romans. "It doesn't matter if they are friends or not, they wouldn't kill each other."
"And I want to hear this from Octavius himself," Quintus said and now he looked at me. "Tell me, what happened between you and the cowboy? Why those hugs and why did the cowboy cry?" It really looked like he was just interested. I couldn't see any anger or contempt on his face.
"His name is Jedediah actually," I started calm. "And yes, we are friends. He thought I was death, but I'm alright."
"General Octavius?" a young soldier said and bowed a little as he spoke. He only continued when I nodded one time. "But if you and the cowboy are friends, how can there be a war? There is still a war between us, isn't it?" All the soldiers, the people and my two friends looked curious at me, waiting for an answer. But I didn't know how the replied, because I didn't know the answer myself.
"Jedediah and I agreed the war is futile and we both know we will never reach our goals, no matter who will win. But there is no peace yet."
"But peace is coming then?" Quintus asked me.
"If we all can work this out," I said honestly.
"I stand for peace," Agrippa said immediately. "Believe it or not, but they cowboys are not so bad."
"Then I also stand for peace," Quintus sighed. "It is no use to argue with the two of you." His voice sounded annoyed, but in his eyes I could see a satisfied sparkle, so I knew he wanted peace just as much as Agrippa and me. One by one also the other people and soldiers started to nod. It's was going well and much better than I ever expected it to be. But then I heard how Jedediah got in an argue with his men.
"This is treason," one cowboy yelled hard.
"William, I did not betray you," Jedediah said back.
"Talking about peace with the enemy, when your own people think they're in the middle of a war is something I call treachery," William continued. "I think you already agreed with the Roman that he won the war."
"There is no victor in this war," Jedediah said calm.
"Oh no," William kept on yelling. "There will be a Roman temple standing in the Wild West before we even know it!" I started to get a little bit worried, because more and more cowboys seemed to agree with the man called William. "And then we also have to wear red skirts like them!"
"There is no way!"
"We get rid of those Romans!"
More and more cowboys yelled how bad we were and how much they hated us. The only one who said nothing was Jacob. He just stood there and kept his mouth shut.
"William, listen to me," Jedediah said and it surprised me to hear he was still calm.
"For years we followed your orders, Mr. Smith," William said mockingly. "But we will not listen to this."
"You don't even give me the chance to explain," Jedediah said and he slowly lost his calm.
"Enough!" William yelled even harder than Jedediah ever did. "I refuse to listen to a traitor like you. Just get yourself a Roman army and I see you on the battle field."
I could see the shock on Jedediah's face and I know he repeated the last word softly, even though I couldn't hear him saying it.
"Come on, boys," William said still yelling. "I'll be your new leader from now on."
All the cowboys started to walk away from Jedediah, until Jedediah and Jacob were the only ones standing there. For a moment they just looked at each other. But Jacob turned his back, just when Jedediah tried to say something. Jacob walked to the group of cowboys without even looking back. I almost couldn't believe it, but suddenly I saw Jedediah standing there like a lonely person. I walked towards him, but he didn't pay any attention to me and watched his own men who still walked away from him.
"Jedediah?" I tried carefully.
"I see you on the battle field?" Jedediah said softly and still stared at his men. "I'll be your new leader? I see you on the battle field?"
