Eleven

Trey, Alia, Percy and Matthias had been lying on their stomachs for about ten minutes when the guards' walkie talkies rang out with the same message: "Situation beta orange has expired! Initiate plan self destruct!"

The guards all drew their guns and pointed them at the prisoners as they backed up and out of the basement.

"NOBODY MOVE!" one of the guards yelled.

You don't have to tell me twice, Trey thought.

Once all the guards were out of the basement, there was the sound of chains being wrapped around the handle of the trap door, then a lock clicking into place.

For about a minute, nothing else was heard.

Matthias finally broke the silence by saying: "I don't think they'll be coming back."

Nina was still pacing back and forth in the room she was in when she suddenly smelled smoke.

Nina whirled around to look down at Jason and leveled the gun she held at him. "What's going on?"

"The situation beta orange had probably expired," Jason replied calmly.

"What does that mean?" Nina snapped.

"Oscar and Aldous weren't around to give the all clear," Jason explained. "So we're instructed to burn down the warehouse if that ever happened."

Nina paled. "Then Luke will be buried under a pile of burning rubble and die!"

Jason scowled. "Forget him. If you free me, I'll help you escape from here without getting hurt."

Nina glared at him. "I will never join you! But I can't let you sit here and burn to death, no matter how evil you are." She pulled out a pocket knife and tossed it towards Jason. It landed right next to his hands.

Jason picked up the knife and desperately began to saw away at the ropes on his wrists.

Nina turned around, took a deep breath and left the room. After taking a quick look around, she saw that most of the walls were on fire, but the middle of the warehouse was untouched. For now.

Nina saw a trapdoor on the floor an few yards away labeled: "PRISON CELLS"

She ran over to it and was about to pull it open but she saw that it had been chained shut with a combo lock holding the chains in place.

"I don't have time to figure out the combination," Nina said to herself. So she pointed her gun at the lock and pulled the trigger.

The bullet destroyed the lock and most of the chains.

Nina pulled the trapdoor open.

Meanwhile at the prison cells, Trey had un-cuffed Alia, Percy and Matthias.

Then, Percy found the prison cell release button and pressed it. All the prison doors opened at once allowing the prisoners to exit the cells. But no one dared to leave the basement in fear that the guards would be waiting for them on the other side.

Trey, Alia, Matthias and Percy were talking to Luke and his cellmate, Martin a teenage boy who could have passed for an NCAA football player.

"Thanks for rescuing us," Luke said. "Being a prisoner was the worst."

"I bet," Matthias agreed.

"So what's next?" Martin asked.

Before anyone could answer, there was the sound of a gunshot at the trapdoor.

All the prisoners froze in fear.

"What was that?" Alia stammered.

"I'm afraid to find out," Luke said. He heard the sound of the trapdoor opening. "Trey, do you still have the gun Mr. Talbot gave us?"

Trey nodded and pulled it out.

"Perfect!" Martin grabbed the gun and aimed it towards the stairs leading to the trapdoor.

Descending the stairs, they could see the bottom half of someone holding a gun to their side.

"The guards are back!" Martin panicked. He pulled the trigger of the gun he held.

There was a scream and Nina tumbled down the stairs holding her leg, which was bleeding from a bullet wound.
