"What's wrong with the kid's head?" A man's gruff voice asked. His eyes traced the large number of corridors leading to god knows where. The interlocking metal pipes built into the wall, combined with the overflowing water and the smell of something burning gave off the sense that this was some sort of power plant. A very disgusting power plant.
"What ever do you mean Hanzo-dono?" The deceivingly kind voice of an older gentleman responded, his words laced with sarcasm. "It seems rather normal to me." The man said as he casually wondered about the subconscious as if it were his own.
The man now identified as Hanzo easily picked up on the sarcasm of the elder, but he would play along with the old fool. "It's a dank, disgusting place not fit for parasites to die in." Hanzo deadpanned, regretting wearing sandals when he felt the water splash unto his foot from the other man's movements.
"Only parts of it Hanzo-dono, I expect it has something to do with the seal." The old man said, offering a smile to his companion. "I believe you will find that the chambers get even more dark and depressing the closer we get to the area the kyuubi is actually held in."
"How does the seal effect his mind though?" Hanzo questioned. It was common knowledge that a bijuu would try to drive it's jinchuuriki insane in order to escape. He always kind of figured it would be a priority to keep the demons away from the minds of their host, but then again, he had never actually met a sane jinchuuriki. Plenty of insane ones though, so maybe that was an inevitability anyway.
"Minato-kun was a seal master with a great understanding of the art. The seal is on the stomach, at the center of the chakra system. The Eight Trigrams Sealing Style is made up of two Four Symbols seals, placed in just the right spots to allow the demon chakra to be used by Naruto-kun effectively. However in order to do that, a jinchuuriki must first get his or her bijuu to agree to work with them. That would be rather hard if they couldn't interact with it right? Should my theory be correct, the place was modified to make the demon as uncomfortable as possible." The old man placed his hand to his chin in a thoughtful manner 'I wonder if either one of us could interact with the seal?' Deciding to keep his thoughts silent for the time being.
"I suppose you earned your title eh Professor? I never was very adept with seals, never really needed to be." Hanzo leaned up against the wall, ignoring the liquids leaking from it. "So Sarutobi-dono, are we gonna go find the kyuubi so you can play around with the seal or what?"
"Who said I was going to mess with the seal?" A small smirked played on the lips of Hiruzen.
"No one, but you sounded giddy as a schoolgirl while you were talking about it, I just put two and two together." Hanzo said with a smirk of his own. It was rare for him to put aside his stoic demeanor to make a joke, but he was well aware that he was stuck with the old monkey for the foreseeable future. It would be a pain to not let loose every once and a while anyway.
"Whatever you say Hanzo-dono" Hiruzen said, hiding his annoyance well. Not that he was annoyed by the joke, that would be childish. He was annoyed because Hanzo got him thinking about schoolgirls, their short skirts, tight blouses, and their barely legal asses, it was all he could do to keep himself contained at the thought. 'Maybe I was the bad influence on Jiraiya all those years ago...'
(thirty minutes later)
"The life of a jinchuuriki..." Hanzo whispered to himself. He had spent the past half hour walking through the subconscious of one Uzumaki Naruto, watching his every memory. The boy had never been physically harmed, or even verbally for that matter, but the populace had found other ways to make his life miserable. They had isolated the boy, forced him into a life of solitude, something that Hanzo himself was very familiar with.
His own home village had made him suffer a similar fate when he was only five years old. He had left his own clan behind after the death of his parents, and fled to a tiny upstart village known as Amegakure. The village itself was weak when he first arrived, surrounded on all sides by villages and clans trying to form villages. What they did to him, it was a power-play, an attempt to make a poisonous shinobi that could level the playing field. In his new village there was a single black salamander, with a poison so potent it could kill a man in a half a days time. When that salamander died, they put the poison sack in him.
It should have killed him, but his heritage gave him an edge. His lifeforce was much more potent than the average man, his clan was made to adapt to harsh situations. They didn't have a true kekkei genkai, but they always survived, that was just what they did. It didn't matter what the situations or circumstances were, they always came out of it unharmed. So six miserable weeks and a respirator later and he was his villages secret weapon. It came at a higher cost than just poison breath however, he became feared, hated even. Everyone ignored him, they made him an outcast, when he chose to leave his clan and gladly became their weapon. He had never felt such anger, it drove him, that was his original conviction, to prove his worth. And he did just that, in ten years time, at the age fifteen he became the well respected leader of that same village.
Naruto had it worse than he did though, throughout the majority of his own childhood and the good part of his adulthood, she had been there, but Naruto, he had no one. Sure, Hiruzen visited him occasionally, but the Hokage didn't have an endless amount of time to spend with the youth. So far, he had only seen the memories up until the boy's sixth birthday, but from what he could tell he had no friends, no family, nothing. 'Kid's a better person than me.' Hanzo decided, watching another memory of the boy crying alone in the streets. Hanzo had killed people on a regular basis at that age, it provided him with an outlet, a way to release the pain of being damned alone.
Speaking of being alone, where the hell was the old monkey at? 'He was right beside me a second ago...'
"WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING HERE!" Hanzo almost leapt out of his skin when the gruff voice filled the previously silent corridors. "Guess the Kyuubi's awake." Hanzo turned on his heel and began the walk towards the voice, he imagined that was where Sarutobi was at the moment.
(Break)
Hiruzen stood face to face with a monster he hadn't seen in 12 years, The Kyuubi no Kitsune, its fangs bared and its tails swishing violently behind it. Thankfully, the beast was behind bars, the only thing keeping it from slashing the old Hokage in half. "So...how have you been?" Hiruzen asked, as if he wasn't talking to a demon who had tried to kill him multiple times.
"How do you think I've been!?"
"I hope you have suffered." Hiruzen said, letting anger and killing intent leak from his being.
"Your lucky I'm distracted, or I would tear you limb from limb for that."
Alarm spread across Hiruzen's face "Why are you distracted! Is Naruto in the village? Let me see whats going on!"
"I have it covered little monkey." The Kyuubi growled.
"There is no way Naruto can fight these guys! Tell him to retreat! Tell him now!" Hiruzen yelled at the beast.
"No host of mine will run from battle, especially form a damn Uchiha. Besides, the gaki is intent on protecting the Yamanaka girl."
"Can you show us?" Hanzo interrupted the heated discussion between old enemy's as he walked.
The Kyuubi paused, his large hate-filled eyes taking in the newcomer "Who are you?" The demon asked, it was rare, when someone he had never met was willing to speak to him in such a manner. Such guile was uncommon among the pathetic species that was humanity.
"Can you show us?" Hanzo asked again, ignoring the Kyuubi's question. His hard gaze matched that of the demons, a smirk was starting to form under his respirator. Who's conviction was stronger? They would soon find out.
The Kyuubi kepts its gaze on Hanzo, murder and blood was promised in the stare, his malicious grin was more threatening than anything Hanzo had ever seen, but he wouldn't back down. He was already dead, with his soul tied to Sarutobi Hiruzen, and he was forced into the mind of a jinchuuriki, quite frankly, if the Kyuubi could kill him, he would welcome it.
After what felt like an eternity, the demon let loose a low chuckle "Your will is stronger than even Ibuse claimed." the back wall of the darkest corridor became like a window, showing the world through the young jinchuuriki's eyes. The first noticeable thing was the white wrapped legs dangling off of young Naruto's shoulders.
"He saved the girl and fled. Gaki's more a of a coward than I gave him credit for." The kyuubi said, catching the two men up on the situation. "Things are going to go down hill from here."
"Why do you care?" Hanzo asked.
Hiruzen smirked, his eyes fixated on the Kyuubi "Tell him what happens."
The demon growled at the elder "Don't push your luck Sarutobi."
Hanzo watched the interactions between the two with mild interest, his focus was centered on the boy who's head he was trapped in. He was having an argument with the girl, something about some Sasuke. God he hated kids.
"Loosen the seal."
"Why?" Hiruzen rubbed his thumb across the seal holding the kyuubi behind the bar.
"Loosen the seal Sarutobi-dono." Hanzo said, watching the through the boys eyes "That's Hidan, a Jashinist, the kid will need the kyuubi's power to survive this, Hidan says he's immortal...I always wanted to test that theory."
Hiruzen studied the seal a second longer before his hand lit up with a blue aurora. He lifted two fingers into the air, holding them directly in front of the seal. The blue shot forwad in a bolt, hitting the seal with force. The black ink swirled in a circle, rearranging itself. "This is easier than it should be..." Hiruzen muttered.
"The boy is drawing on my chakra, he wants to use it." The Kyuubi's mouth spread into an evil smirk.
"He's protecting the girl. Not filled with bloodlust like you." Hanzo said, never turning to look at the kyuubi, he remained focused on the ensuing fight. Did he think that Naruto protecting the girl was smart, probably not, but he couldn't say he wouldn't have done the same thing back in his more...emotional days. He wouldn't fault the kid for trying to protect a friend.
"I'm almost done, just a few more seconds." Hiruzen muttered.
"YOU LITTLE FUCKING BITCH! DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW BAD THAT HURT?" Hidan yelled out.
"Huh...apparently he really is immortal." Hanzo muttered, watching the blood pour from what should have been fatal wounds "I thought he was bluffing." he admitted.
Hanzo and the kyuubi watch the fight unfold. Naruto was getting angry by the minute. Red chakra burst would feel the mindscape every time Hidan would mention something to do with killing Ino or someone else Naruto cared about. He was being a fool. No sane person would try to provoke a jinchuuriki. Then again, no one would ever accuse the foul mouthed Jashinist of being sane. Without warning, Ino screamed out in pain, the scythe blade cut into her upper thigh. The largest burst of Chakra yet escaped the cage that held the Kyuubi.
"Damn...The seal is fighting me hard." Sweat dripped down Hiruzen's face from the struggle to maintain focus and overpower the seal array.
A few more seconds into the fight, and Hidan had a broken neck, but he was still fighting. "Hurry Hiruzen-dono" Hanzo said. Hidan was getting very angry, and he wasn't sure how much longer he would play around with Naruto.
The world seemed to slow and a pained scream rocked the mindscape. "Done." Hiruzen said, allowing the chakra too die down.
Suddenly the water began to swish around their feet, a phantom wind began to blow with a vengence and the walls themselves began to shake and crack. The red chakra flooded the area.
Hanzo dropped to the ground, gripping his throat and grasping for air. This was overpowering, that much chakra in one go...he felt like he was going to die...he was going to...going to...Hanzo fell back, laying on his back, he saw Hiruzen drop, just before he himself blacked out.
A/N: Okay, kind of a short chapter, originally supposed to be longer, but I wanted to let all my readers know that I'm back. Think of this as a teaser. The next chapter will have Naruto meeting the Kyuubi and Hanzo, and learning that Hiruzen is in his mind. He will wake up next chapter, then the real story can begin. And trust me, I can't wait. (By the way sorry if I'm a little rusty. Hopefully writing again will remedy that.) As always, Read and review my youthful friends!
