Merida walked into Hiccup's hospital room. "Hic, I got the stuff you asked for. I know it took a while but I don't know what half these things even are so I had to ask around." Merida came in with a box of stuff, the sheet Hiccup gave her earlier laid on top of everything.
"Thanks. How did you get past all the staff with this stuff, though?" Hiccup questioned.
"I thought it would be difficult, too. But everyone seems t'be busy with the sick. A bunch of new patients came in this mornin'. It's getting bad out there. Maybe bein' stuck in a hospital room isn't half bad. Better than catching that flu." Merida replied.
"Well I don't plan on being stuck in here much longer." Hiccup commented. "Anyway, Merida. Thanks again."
"It was nothin'. Anyone could have done it. Well, I'll let you work on all...that." she gestured to the box filled with tools and items.
"Yeah, maybe anyone could. Point is, though, I only trusted you with this task."
Merida turned away from him. His words caused a small smile to appear on her face. She felt important; which is something she hasn't been feeling lately. She's the newbie in the group and she's aware of that. Everyone already had years of friendship built up. But, just maybe, that doesn't matter to them. Having Merida being there is enough for them, she's already important to everyone, and she's finally realizing it.
"Thanks." she mumbled under her breath through that small smile of hers.
"What was that?"
"Ah, nothin'." she started walking toward the door. "Well, I hope everything goes smoothly. Tell someone to come get me if you need anything else."
"I will." Hiccup took a few things out of the box to make sure everything was there. "Hey, Merida?" he looked up.
She stopped past the door and turned her view to Hiccup. "Ay?"
"Later today, will you back me up? I'm going to make a speech, and I have a feeling I'll need you there. You know, for support and stuff."
Merida's hand was already on the doorknob, but she didn't close the door just yet. She smiled at the brunette, "I'll be there." she then turned away and shut the door behind her.
"Right, then. Time to get working." he sighed looking at everything in the box. "Can't be helped."
"So he's still doing alright?" Rapunzel asked about Hiccup.
"As well as a guy with one leg can be." Merida replied.
"So when was the last time you saw him?" asked Jack, leaning his back against a wall.
"About four hours ago. He wanted us to all meet here around this time, don't know why, though." said Merida.
"There's a lot of people inside the building, too. Should we just go in?" Rapunzel commented.
"I think we should wait for him." Merida suggested.
"What, is someone going to push him in on a hospital bed? I know he's been talking about making some big speech but couldn't he have set all of this up after he got out of the hospital?" said Jack
"About that. I think Hic has been-" Merida was cut off.
"I'm saddened by the lack of faith you have in me, Jack." Hiccup came walking up behind the three, slowly.
Rapunzel's eyes widened in shock at the walking Hiccup. The same guy who was missing his left leg the last time she saw him.
Merida wasn't too shocked. In fact, she almost had a smile on her face.
Jack held a look of disbelief, nearly squinting down at Hiccup's mechanical leg to see if what he was looking at is real.
"Do you need some glasses? Your face is creeping me out." Hiccup commented.
"The heck is that?" Jack almost shouted, but kept his voice down since there were a lot of people in the building next to him.
Hiccup pointed his hands down to his fake leg. "Ta-da. Peg-leg." he slouched.
"Does..does it hurt?" Rapunzel asked.
"Yeah, it does. Especially the pressure on my leg against the metal. But I should be fine. I only have to keep it up for an hour or two... hopefully. Assuming the speech goes well." Hiccup replied. "Which it probably won't" he mumbled.
Merida wanted to say something but she was speechless. Amazed that Hiccup could invent something as complex as this in just a few hours. He wasn't giving himself enough credit for it, she thought.
"You're insane." said Jack
"Says the guy who can turn into a 15 meter tall titan." replied Hiccup
"I don't know, man. This is way more insane." Jack said jokingly.
"Right and just when I thought I was getting taller than you, you turn into a fucking titan and I lose my leg. Wonderful." Hiccup replied sarcastically. Kinda.
Merida looked at the building filled with people then back at the group. "I'm glad you two are back to joking around but I think you're wanted in there, Hic."
"Right. Well. Here goes nothing." Hiccup sighed.
"Wait, Hiccup. What's this speech about, anyway." Rapunzel asked what all of them wanted to know.
"It's about the titans. I think I'm on to something and I need everyone to hear me out. The rest you'll have to learn in the court room during my speech."
Everyone looked at each other, worried.
"Don't worry, guys. All that matters is me trying to get my point across. If I do, maybe we can find a way to stop everyone from getting sick."
They gave him a nod. "We believe in you." said Rapunzel.
Shortly after they all went into the building and the doors shut once Hiccup walked in. There was a lot of listeners in the crowd, some Military police stood around the room, there were five high-ranked adults sitting behind a big table in front of the room and the Mayor was in the biggest chair in the middle.
Hiccup approached a stand and the other three stood in the back of the room by the door, where some people continued to go in and out of.
Hiccup was nervous. He didn't think he would have a whole room of people wanting to listen to what he has to say, especially not the mayor. Yet, it gave him hope. At least one of these people should be agreeing with him by the end of his speech.
After some introductions and discussion, Hiccup was finally at the important part of his speech. All eyes were on him.
"I believe there's titans inside the walls." Hiccup said in a stern tone.
If you listened, you could hear a few people chuckling in the audience, but the higher-ups and the Mayor still held a straight face. Almost as if they believed him. Why? Why are they not kicking me out yet? Hiccup asked himself. Even he wanted to laugh the first time he thought of this, so why?
"Keep going." said the Mayor.
"Right." Hiccup cleared his throat. He's been talking for a good 40 minutes now but this is the first time he felt this nervous.
Regardless, Hiccup continued. "After the invasion five years ago, after losing my mom and seeing titans up close for the first time, watching them eat my friends and neighbors, I started having night terrors."
Merida looked at Hiccup. The only time she would look away is if someone in the room were to laugh at something he said. It made her want to punch the person, but she stood still, knowing it's not her place to force attention on herself. This is Hiccup's moment.
"Five years ago I would have horrible dreams, they felt like a reality, of everything I saw that night the Titans invaded," He took a deep breath. "Every night I would have a different dream. Either of my mother dying from being too sick, my father being taken down by a titan, our house being destroyed, etc. Every time was a different nightmare, besides one thing."
He looked around, making sure people were still listening. "Five years ago, from the giant titan-made hold in the Wall that is supposed to be protecting us, I saw it. I saw a titan inside the Wall. He was covered in what looked like ice; armor. I would continue dreaming about this off and on for five years."
Hiccup spoke up. "I saw this same thing a few days ago when the titans took down our second wall. There was another titan inside the wall." He spoke up. He wanted to shout if it meant people would understand. "This titan also had what looked like ice armor around its body."
"This made me want to test it out. I wanted to see if this 'armor' was really ice. I left my teammate and went after a titan on my own; one that also had this armor on the back of its hands. I got caught and nearly died. Lost my leg and all. But I was able to figure something out. When my sword touched this armor, the sword froze instantly. In seconds. I couldn't retrieve it, it was stuck on the titan for good."
"If I didn't leg go, my hand would have frozen with it and I would have been stuck to that titan until it ripped me off and ate me for good."
"There are titans inside the walls with armor so cold we can not touch it!" He shouted. "The thought of titans being inside the thing we all thought has protected us from exactly that terrifies me."
Someone at the front table forced himself to speak over Hiccup. "Listen, we-"
"I'm not done." said Hiccup. "I think this is why it's so cold inside the wall. I think someone planned this from the start! Someone is using those titans ice-armor to slowly freeze us from the inside!"
People looked like they were losing interest in what Hiccup had to say. He knew he had to word everything else just right.
"That's why so many people are getting sick. Daily, people are dying because we can't get enough medicine for everyone. When I went outside the walls a few days ago I could feel a difference. It's warm out there, but the second you walk inside the walls you get a chill down your spine."
"It's important that you at least consider everything I have said! And just listen to this one last thing I really want to say; I think these titans inside the walls are human beings."
The Mayor sat up, not taking his eyes off Hiccup. Has he caught his attention again? Why?
A lot of people in the audience have already left, but the room still looked full.
"There's no way you could get a normal titan to stay still and sit inside a wall for years, so if humans-"
"Humans? As titans?" The Mayor questioned in a gruff tone.
Hiccup paused. His heart started racing. He was so into his speech that he didn't realize he brought up people being able to change into titans. He forgot these people aren't aware of that yet, and he had no way to prove it without revealing Jack to everyone.
"That's it." Hiccup thought, "I'm done. I gave it my best, but there's no way I can convince a whole building of people without any proof. This was pointless in the end."
"Tell me more." said the Mayor.
Hiccup was surprised. He wanted to hear more? But what could he say? He can't say 'my friend is a titan-shifter'. Hiccup tried to think of something quick. "Hans. That's right! I remember Jack saying Hans was also a shifter. That's it, I can still do this."
Hiccup continued on with his speech. The three in the back were speechless when he brought up Hans in front of everyone. Just hearing the name Hans made Jack want to leave the room, but he wouldn't. He's going to stay to support Hiccup.
While Hiccup was convincing the Mayor, someone walked into the building and stood next to the three in the back; it was Pitch.
"So he brough it up after all." said Pitch.
The three were startled and turned around quickly.
"What do you want?" asked Merida
"This is a bad idea, you know." Pitch commented.
"What do you know?" Jack asked.
Pitch laughed. "They already know. The Mayor and his followers have already been looking into the humans being titans theory. It has been a big discussion lately, and it's not pretty."
"What do you mean?" Rapunzel asked
"They capture and torture anyone they think could be a titan shifter. They try to get information out of them and if they don't get what they want, well, you're probably best not knowing. Let me just say; you would rather be eaten by a titan any day." Pitch responded.
Rapunzel's heart pounded fast. She immediately thought of Jack.
"But hey, you should probably get out of here soon. Like I said, this was a bad idea. And your blabbering friend over there is giving everything away. It's only a matter of minutes before they figure out you're a shifter, Jack."
Rapunzel looked over at Jack, then to Hiccup with a worried expression. "They won't find out. Hiccup won't say anything about Jack."
Pitch smiled. "Right, well, best of luck then. You'll need it." Pitched walked away after that into the crowd of people. They eventually lost sight of him.
"This is bad." said Merida
"Maybe we should-" Jack was cut off
An anonymous male voice spoke up in the crowd of people, "One of his three friends in the back is a titan-shifter!" the man shouted.
Rapunzel's eyes widened. "No. No.. Jack."
"Catch the titan shifter!" The Mayor shouted from his seat. Hiccup turned around to look at his friends, terrified for them, and wondering who the anonymous speaker was.
"We have to go now! Run!" Rapunzel shouted to the two. They agreed and ran toward the door behind them, making it out.
Before Rapunzel ran out she noticed someone from the crowd wearing a long black coat and hood run out through the back door. She then put her attention back on her friends running in front of her, not falling too far behind.
"Where do we go?!" Merida asked
Rapunzel watched Jack. He looked scared; terrified. She then remembered what Pitched said, "They capture and torture anyone they think could be a titan shifter."
Her heart ached. It was killing her, she didn't want to breath; it hurt too much. Imagining what they would do to Jack...she couldn't handle it.
"Guys, we have to split up!" She demanded, getting a small boost of courage.
"Are you nuts?! No, we're staying together." Jack declined.
"Please listen to me, Jack! We have to do this, it's our best option."
"I agree." said Merida, running a little ahead of Jack. "I'm going this way!" Merida already ran off to the right. Jack and Rapunzel kept running a little longer.
"I'm sorry, Punzie, but I'm not leaving you behind."
"You'll let Merida down." said Rapunzel. Jack and Rapunzel were able to stop behind a building for a quick break.
"It will be fine, Jack." said Rapunzel, trying to catch her breath.
"I don't like this." Jack replied
Rapunzel smiled. "I know." she sighed quietly "But we'll be okay. We're the top of our class, remember? There's no way they'll catch us!" she tried to talk as cheerfully as she could.
"Punzie.."
"Here, take Pascal." she reached for Pascal in her pocket and waited for him to crawl onto her arm, transferring him over to Jack's shoulder. "He's actually very helpful."
"No, you should keep him. I'll be fine."
"No." she said firmly. "I insist. Besides, we'll... see each other again."
Jack paused for a moment, but knew he couldn't discuss this any longer; the police were still after them. "Promise?"
"I promise."
"Don't break it."
"I never do."
She smiled at him one last time before he turned around and continued running forward.
"Run, run and don't stop! Find Merida and Hiccup later! And me... please find me!" she shouted. Her smile slowly faded the moment Jack was too far gone to see.
She took one last deep breath. "Right." She turned around and started running back toward the building where Hiccup was making his speech.
Once she got close she stopped and started walking. Looking around for any Military Police. After a few minutes of walking, she found three in one spot.
Her heart began pounding faster. " For Jack. For Jack." the thought before she walked out and revealed herself to the police.
"Hey!" she shouted. They turned around.
She wanted to walk toward them but her legs felt as if they were about to break out beneath her, so she stood there. As long as she had their attention.
"It's me." she said confidently. "I'm the titan shifter."
"Get her, hurry!" one of the police shouted and the other two ran toward her. Rapunzel started running in attempt to look as if she was trying to get away, but they caught her, like she wanted.
"Won't the Mayor be happy."
She struggled to get out of their grip. "Let me go!"
"Yeah, right."
They threw her into a wooden carriage and two sat next to her to keep watch as the last one drove them to the Mayor.
"I'm sorry, Jack. I had to..." her body laid stiff on the prickly wood floor of the carriage where they threw her. "Jack, Merida, Hiccup... You don't have to run anymore. But please, please..."
"stay safe."
