Title: One Month - Chapter Five
Summary: The days following Andy Darden's death and how it was handled. Mostly Kelly Severide, Matthew Casey, but have all.
Disclaimers: The show is property of Dick Wolfe, and NBC. I don't own anything. Just borrowing the characters to practice my writing. Only thing I own is Season 1 DVDs and they are getting well worn. LOL Also don't own any poems in here either.
A/N: Thank you for still following the story. I'm working on it. I didn't forget about it. Just working on it between other things going on in my life. I'm glad you enjoy it. Do please leave a review. Any ideas as what happens after the funeral? I have one major idea but what else can happen? Please let me know. Thank You. :D Any mistakes are mine. I tried to research about firefighters funerals. Forgive me for and glaring mistakes.
Scenes in bold and Italic are from the show.
The next day Hallie, is back from her trip. The day after that is the funeral to honor the memory of a firefighter who fought fires with bravery and to say a final goodbye to a brother in arms. It has been about a week since Andy died and people still feel the loss of a great firefighter and friend and brother. The next few days everyone has off before next shift.
Leslie Shay is keeping a very close eye on Kelly till the funeral. He is withdrawn and brooding. He is again in that dark place. She refuses to let him slide any further without her intervention to help him. He refuses to show his emotion to anyone but her. Unless he chooses to lash out toward Matt but the two haven't seen each other since the last shift when Chief Boden sternly talked to them both about their animosity toward each other.
The morning after shift Kelly decides to go running. He puts on his work out gear and tells Leslie Shay where he is going and heads out to his car and heads to the park near his home and pulls his car into a space and shuts off his car. He gets out but not before he locks his wallet and his cell phone in his glove box. He turns to look at the lake. It is still very early out that the sun is just kissing the horizon. He pulled his hood up on his work out jacket and started to run his route. He let his mind clear as he ran. Breathing in and out. Just enjoying the early morning run. He didn't want to think about the funeral tomorrow but it was hard not to think about it. He was saying goodbye to his childhood friend he knew since kindergarten. The two knew each other very well.
Then they both met Matt and he became a fast friend except when he and Kelly butted heads and Andy told them both to grow up. The park he was running at was a favorite of everyone's. A good place to get away from the city and see nature but near enough to get back quickly if need be. Kelly pushed himself into running faster. He wondered what Matt was doing this morning. How he was fairing this morning.
The next morning they were going to hang Andrew Darden's badge up on the wall at the academy where others hang, that died in the line of duty. A testament that the ultimate sacrifice was made and a firefighter laid down his life for another. The badge hanging ceremony is a somber affair.
Kelly pushed himself as he headed for a path into a wooded area to run. Just letting go. He is running to fast to notice that the dried leaves hid a root sticking up ready to grab at a person's foot and trip that person. Kelly yelped as he was the lucky person to take a tumble and go down the embankment that is yawning beside the footpath. He kept rolling and was stopped when he rolled into a pair of pine trees which stood together. The impact was hard enough to knock Kelly out and cause him some injury but thankfully not kill him.

Matt Casey sat up slowly as he came awake. He felt like someone needed him but he didn't know who or what. He headed to the bathroom to shave and shower and to get dressed. Hallie would be here today. As Matt finished what he was doing and stepped out of the shower and dressed in his sweat pants and a blue sweater.
Andrew Darden, is watching Matt. "Kelly needs you. Go to our favorite park. Go to the park." Andrew says, sending the message to Matt. The picture that sat on the end table moves and falls to the floor with a loud clatter not breaking. Matt goes over to pick it up and stares at Kelly in the picture as he puts it back.
Matt gets his sneakers on and grabs a heavy coat. He heads upstairs to grab his first aid kit and goes back downstairs to grab his rope that he has. He makes sure to grab his cell phone as he heads toward his truck and gets in with what he grabbed.

Kelly's eyes open slowly. He groans in pain. He tries to sit up slowly but he can't move much. "HELP ME!" Kelly yells. He is in pain everywhere. He makes himself stay awake. He knows not to close his eyes. To Kelly it feels like time is dragging but in reality it is moving at the same speed it always has been. "HELP ME!" Kelly screams hoping someone would hear him. At least I told Leslie where I was going. If I don't show up she will send out a search party for me. I just need to stay strong until help arrives. Kelly thought, grabbing the branches of the pine trees and feeling the sharp pine needles go into his skin as he slowly works himself into a sitting position. He leans against the trunk of the tree knowing he can't get up because of his ankle which he twisted on the hidden root. Kelly looks up from where he came down which is a long way up or so it seems. He hears someone shouting and it sounds like his name. "HELP ME! DOWN HERE!" Kelly screams hoping someone is searching for him.

Matt Casey pulls into the parking lot of the park and he spots Kelly's car and pulls in beside it and shuts off his truck. Matt gets out and goes over to his friend's car and tries the handle but it is locked which he figured. He grabs the first aid kit and the rope and stops. Which way did he go? If he needs help I don't want to waste time looking in the wrong place for him. Matt thought, as he looks around. The only two vehicles in the area are his and Severide's.
"SEVERIDE!" Matt calls out as he listens for Kelly. Matt walks to a path in a wooded area and looks down and it looks like the ground was disturbed not so long ago. He yells again and he hears a faint calling. He keeps walking forward slowly. "SEVERIDE!" Matt yells as he keeps walking and stops when he sees a root sticking up and looks down the embankment. "CASEY DOWN HERE!" Kelly yells as he and Matt lock gazes with one another. Matt ties the one end of the rope to a tree and starts to climb down toward Kelly.
He reaches Kelly and crouches down in front of him. Matt takes in Kelly's appearance. "Hey Kel what hurts?" Matt asks, setting the first aid kit down beside him. "My head hurts and my ankle. I tripped over something and it send me on a one way trip and it was all down hill. These trees stopped me from going further. I lost consciousness when I hit." Kelly says, wincing as Matt checked his ankle.
Matt checks Kelly's head and his eyes to make sure he didn't have a concussion. "Is your shoulder alright?" Matt asks Kelly. "I don't think I hurt it worse than I did." Kelly answers. "How do you want to do this? Should I call Chief Boden and have him send help or should I pull you up from where you came down?" Matt asks, looking at Kelly. Kelly looks at Matt before he replies and can tell that he may be calm on the outside but on the inside he is like a raging volcano ready to erupt.
Matt pulls the cell phone from the inner pocket of his coat. His hands shaking. "Call Shay and have her come out. She can bring someone else." Kelly says locking his gaze with Matt hoping he is conveying calmness in the situation. Matt dials Leslie's cell number. It rings and Matt is losing hope that she will answer when she does. "Hey Leslie, Kelly and I are at the park. Where Kelly said he was going running well he is hurt and from where he was to where he is, is a long way up I need your help. Bring along someone else." Matt says into the phone. "Okay sure. I'll be there as soon as I can." Leslie says hanging up. Matt puts the phone back into the inner pocket of his coat.
Matt takes off his heavy coat puts it around Kelly to keep him warm. "What about you? I don't want you getting sicker than you are." Kelly says to Matt. Matt gives Kelly a long look and shakes his head.
The two don't have to wait long as the cell phone rings and Kelly hands it to Matt to answer. "Yeah?" Matt answers. "Hey Casey I'm pulling into the parking lot now and see your truck and Kelly's car. Which trail is it?" Leslie asks. "The path that leads to the wooded trail and you should see footprints. We'll start yelling so you hear us. Bye." Matt says hanging up the cell phone and handing it back to Kelly to put away.
"HEY SHAY! DOWN HERE! LOOK DOWN HERE!" both men yell. In a few moments Leslie sees Kelly and Matt a long way down the embankment. Wallace Boden behind her. ""HEY KELLY ARE YOU OKAY?" Leslie yells. "YEAH ALL IS GOOD." Kelly yells back. Chief Boden opens the bag he has and grabs out the harness and some more rope. He uses Matt's rope which is already tied off to go down the embankment toward his two lieutenants. He reaches the bottom with what he brought with him.
"Kelly I need you to put this on so we can get you back to the top and get you checked out." Wallace says. Kelly straps the harness on and Chief Boden ties the rope onto the harness so they can pull him up. "Matt I need you to climb back up and take this rope with you to pull Kelly up." Chief Boden says looking at Matt. He nods his head and starts to climb up.
A few moments later Matt is at the top and wraps the other rope around the tree and starts pulling on it to bring Kelly up from the bottom. Chief Boden using Matt's rope again to get back to the top and to keep and eye on Kelly.
"Finally! Back at the top!" Kelly yells in excitement. He looks over at Leslie and Matt and grins. "Okay Matt I need you to help get Kelly to the car." Chief Boden says. Matt nods his head as both men stand beside Kelly and put his arms around them and start to slowly head out.
They all make it to where the cars are and they place Kelly into Leslie's car as Chief Boden gets in. "Hey Kelly give me your keys so I can drive your car back." Leslie says before Chief decides to head out. Kelly hands his keys over as well as Matt's phone. "We're heading to Lakeshore Hospital." Wallace Boden says starting the car and heading out.
Matt heads back to grab the gear. Leslie follows to help him. Matt unties the two ropes and rolls them up and grabs his first aid kit and the harness. Leslie is watching Matt closely. He suddenly darts behind a tree getting sick. She hears him retching her concern growing. Matt wipes his mouth as he heads back over looking pale.
"Matt are you okay?" Leslie asks, looking over at Matt. He shakes his head unable to talk yet because he is getting emotional. "Tomorrow we say goodbye to a fellow firefighter and brother. Seeing Kelly like that was hard. I couldn't handle it if something happened to him. I'd rather die first than lose him. We have our moments but he is my big brother." Matt says, as tears fall silently down his cheeks.
"Lets get out of here." Leslie says, putting her arm around Matt. Matt grabs the things and they both head out to go to Lakeshore Hospital. Matt follows behind Kelly's car that Leslie is driving.

Matt is sitting in the waiting room at Lakeshore waiting on news about Kelly along with the others that were called. Matt gets up to pace to use up some pent up energy. Chief Boden is watching Matt with concern. A doctor comes out into the waiting room with news on Kelly. "Are you all here for Kelly?" The doctor asks. "Yes." everyone answered all at once. "His ankle is just sprained slightly and he doesn't have a concussion. He can go home." the doctor says, leaving. There is a sigh of relief heard from everyone in the room.
Leslie heads back to check on Kelly to see how things are coming along. Moments later Leslie and Kelly come out into the waiting room. Kelly using crutches to get around. Matt sees Kelly heading out a small smile on his lips. Happy that his brother is okay. Everyone gathers around Kelly as Matt stands up to leave glad things worked out. No one notices him leave except the Chief who watches him go.
"Hey everyone please just back up. I'm okay. Thanks to Casey." Kelly says, looking for his little brother whom he didn't see anywhere. Matt Casey is walking down the hallway heading toward the elevators. He just doesn't want to think about losing another brother when the next day is the funeral of the one lost forever from his and everyone's life forever.
An elevator dings as it opens and Matt steps onto it as tears glisten in his eyes. "Hey Casey, wait!" Kelly says, crutching his way to the elevator to see Matt get on. Matt looks up, Kelly noticing his tears as the doors close and the elevator goes down. Kelly pushes the button to go down also to see if he can catch up to Casey.
Matt is heading to the parking lot as he hears yelling. "CASEY WAIT UP!" Kelly yells after him. Matt stops as Kelly crutches toward him. Matt looks toward him. "Thank you Matt for saving me out there." Both the lieutenants look at one another. "Kelly you are my brother. I don't want to lose you. Just be careful next time." Matt says turning away and walking to his truck and getting in.
Kelly watches his friend drive away as he turns back onto the sidewalk and goes back inside. He takes the elevator back up to the floor he was on and goes back to the gathered group. Everyone welcomes him back.

It is very early the next morning. The night sky is just beginning to brighten. Kelly Severide is getting ready for the very important day of honoring his Childhood friend, his brother. He got up early to take a shower, shave and get dressed in his dress blues for the day. He just wants the day to go well. He heads downstairs, thinking about Andrew Darden.
Matthew Casey is also up very early already showered and dressed. He can't sleep. He just wants the day to go well. He just wants to honor his friend and brother. He looks out the window. One of those days where it is cloudy and gray out but no rain. Matt doesn't eat. The way he was feeling he wouldn't keep it down. He goes over to his new sofa and sits down and looks out the window as thoughts of his friend Andrew Darden run through his mind.
The rest of Firehouse fifty-one were also getting ready for the long day that was to come. Everyone is dressed in their finest. The United states flag was lowered at half-staff at the firehouse. All of station fifty-one staff wore a black band around their badges to honor Andrew Darden. All other Firefighters also wore a black band around their badges to honor the memory of a fallen firefighter. The Firehouse flag is lowered to half-staff. The two people that the fifty-one house team are concerned with are, Kelly Severide and Matthew Casey. Since all three of them were close. They would be closely watched.

Everyone gathered at the Academy were they were going to hang up Andrew Darden's badge. Andrew's widow, Heather was not there. She wanted to take the boys at a later date. When everyone was ready to see it. It seemed that only Firehouse fifty-one is gathered to see the ceremony of the badge hanging.
"Greater love hath no man than this that a man lay down his life for his friends. John 15:13." A Firehouse Chaplin read in front of the case. Then the Chaplin read a poem of a Fallen firefighter. Then the bell was rung for the last call, shift change. Everyone looked somber as they stood straight and solemn. Matthew Casey stood beside Hallie his hand in hers as he tightened his hold of her hand. Hallie squeezed back. Kelly Severide was beside Leslie Shay and Gabriela Dawson. Andrew Darden's badge is hung and the case is closed. His name and his month and year that he died are underneath the badge. The small ceremony is over. The gathered team starts to leave. Kelly and Matthew don't move as they both stand remembering that day. Hallie, has her arm around Matthew as he fights not to cry. It is a losing battle as the tears flow silently down his face.
Kelly also has his own tears silently sliding down his own face. Leslie has her arm around his back. They both turn to leave and head over to the Firehouse where the funeral precession will start has they head over to the church that the Darden family go to. They were going to put Andy's casket on truck eighty-one since it is the company that he belonged to.
Back at the firehouse everyone is gathered in the common room all but the squad team who are at their table. Matthew isn't hanging out in the common room just wanting to be by himself. He is sitting on the back of truck eighty-one looking outside. The Kitty cat is sitting in Matt's lap as he pets him. Soot is the name christened to the cat by the firefighters. The cat is purring as Matt is petting him. Soot looks up as a wetness falls on his fur. He meows as he stands up sniffing at the tears falling down Matt's face. He rubs his little head along Matt's face along his one cheek. Matt is petting Soot as the cat settles back down on his lap purring.
Kelly looks over and sees Matt sitting by himself with the cat on his lap. Today his ankle is feeling better so he doesn't need the crutches. He gets up from his chair and heads to his locker to grab two cigars. He heads back toward where Matt is sitting. Matt looks up his eyes wet and a sad look on his face. Kelly holds out the two cigars toward Matt. Soot meows as Kelly pets him. The cat jumps down and heads to the common room where Mouch is sitting.
No words are needed as the two men head outside to the squad truck and lean on the front. Kelly lights the cigars and passes one to Matt. The smoke rises as both men take a puff of the cigars. Matt's hands shake and he hopes Kelly doesn't notice. His stomach in knots from the emotional day that is just starting. Kelly takes a puff from his cigar as he watches Matt from the corner of his eye. He noticed Matt's shaking hands. He knew why too. He could read Casey like a book at times.
The cigars are smoked and finished just as the Darden family all arrive and park their cars. The hearse arrives and parks. Matt just stares in shock at the hearse and what it means. A dark look comes over Kelly's face for a moment but passes as he tries not to look over at it. Otis is pulling truck eighty-one out of the hanger and parking it. Kelly stands up ready to go over when he looks at Matt who hasn't moved yet. He puts his hand on Matt's Shoulder. Matt shakes his head and looks at Kelly with a look of total despair and loss on his face.
Matt stands up as he makes his face blank to show no emotion. He falters as he takes a step, feeling dizzy and nauseated. He stops and looks down at the ground to gain his equilibrium both emotional and physical. He stands for the moment and just breaths in and out. Not ready for the rest of the day. Kelly grabs Matt's shoulders making sure everything is okay. "Are you good?" Kelly asks looking at Matt waiting for his typical answer. "I'm fine." Matt answers still not moving.
"We can do this. Remember for Andy." Kelly says, looking at Matt. Matt nods his head and both Severide and Casey move forward toward the hearse that is a clear reminder that Andrew Darden is no longer with them. Their brother forever lost to them. Kelly notices that Matthew's breathing is getting faster. He is soon going to start to hyperventilate if he isn't careful. Kelly puts his hands on Matt's cheeks noticing the tears in Matt's eyes. "Come on breath with me ." Kelly says, taking a deep breath in. Matt follows what Kelly is doing and he finally calms down.
The pall- bearers come forward to carry the casket. Matthew and Kelly are in the group. Herrmann, Mouch, Otis, and Joe Cruz are the other pall-bearers. The back of the hearse is opened. The wooden coffin shiny and reflecting the faces of the people. Matt is in the front and Kelly is on the other side. Then Herrmann and Mouch behind them, then Otis and Joe behind them. Each grab the coffin and walk slowly toward truck eighty-one where they were going to place the coffin. A United States flag covers the coffin.
The coffin is placed on the truck and the guys step back. Joe Cruz gets into the truck to drive it. He drives slowly toward the church. All the firefighters follow behind the truck as the procession starts. The church isn't far. The lights are flashing as they pull into the church parking lot.
Joe Cruz parks truck eighty-one. The same people are the pall-bearers and take the coffin inside the church and place it in the front. The firefighters of station fifty-one sit together. The Darden family sits together. Then everyone else sits down. Hallie is sitting beside Matt holding his hand. Kelly is sitting next to Leslie and Gabby.
Half and hour later the funeral starts. Amazing Grace is played on bagpipes. There isn't a dry eye anywhere. The pastor walks up to the pulpit. "Father be with the Darden Family in their time of grief and walk beside them at this time. Be with his fellow brothers and sisters of station house fifty-one at this time. Keep them all safe from harm and be with them in their grief and sadness. Amen." Pastor Grayson finishes and looks up at all gathered and seated.
"I knew Andrew Darden since he was a child. He grew up in this church. Always playing a practical joke on someone. If someone were sad he would go out of his way to cheer them up. His smile and laugh was infectious and a person couldn't help but join in. He was always with his school friend Kelly Severide. Inseparable those two were. I remember them joining the fire academy. Proving to themselves and others that they were going to make it. The two amigos then became the three musketeers when they meet Matthew Casey. Always together. All of them like brothers. Then I married Andrew and Heather and I remember when Griffen and Benjamin were born. I watched him grow through his life. He enjoyed each and every moment." Pastor Grayson shared with everyone.
Leslie Shay was holding Kelly's hand feeling the pressure of him squeezing her hand. He was barely holding on. Memories of his childhood shared with Andy and then meeting Matt, going through his mind. A painful reminder of losing someone he loves. He glances over at Matt and sees that his face is showing no emotion at all. A bad sign.
"Anybody else want to share a few memories of Andy and how he touched your life?" Pastor Grayson, replied, opening the floor for others to share. A lot of people do share. Funny stories which get a few chuckles and touching stories that make the people cry at the loss of Andy. Tears now do fall from Kelly's eyes and Leslie has her arm around him to comfort him.
A numbness washes over Matt. His emotions bottled up so he could handle getting through the day. He'd grieve later. Pastor Grayson clears his throat and reads from a piece of paper in his hand that contains a prayer…
A Firefighter's Prayer
Dear Lord:
We call upon You for strength and guidance.
Look kindly upon us in our needs.
Teach us to look always to You for assistance, as our fellow
citizens look to us.
Give us courage, that we may impart courage to others.
Make us studious, and give us pride and joy in our work.
When the gong sounds, calling us to duty, give us speed
and efficiency.
As our siren wails, ride with us through the city streets, shielding us from danger.
On the fire scene, may our officers and men always work as
an honorable, courageous and victorious team.
Walk with us through the terror of flame and explosion.
May our hearts be always ready if we should be summoned
before our Eternal Chief in the midst of our labors.
Through our ministrations to our suffering fellowmen, we
dedicate our lives humbly to Your praise and glory.
In joy or sorrow, we ask only that You may be pleased with
our service, that when the Last Alarm shall have sounded
for us, we may receive our eternal assignment with You.
AMEN

The service concludes with Andy's favorite hymns sung and favorite scriptures read. Pastor Grayson says a final prayer and everyone raises as the pall-bearers go to the front and lift the casket and go out to Fire truck eighty-one and place the casket once more in the place of honor. Joe Cruz gets into the truck to drive it to the graveside service. Like before the men and women of Firehouse fifty-one walk behind the truck to the graveside.
Other Firefighters are gathered at the graveside from other firehouses to honor the memory of Andy Darden. Joe Cruz parks the truck which is still on the road which is in the cemetery. The pall-bears for the last time pull the casket from Truck eighty-one and walk toward the graveside. They place the casket on the holders until it is ready to be lowered. Kelly and Matt's eyes meet over the graveside. Kelly sees Matt's grief shadowed face as does Matt see Kelly's sadness on his.
The station fifty-one firefighters stand in formation as the pastor waits for family and friend to gather at the graveside to start the service. The pastor begins to read Psalm twenty-three. Heather whom is sitting in one of the chairs beside the graveside has tears in her eyes as she hears the scripture being read. Her sons are beside her. One on each side of her. The boys are sitting in silence as they look around at all the firefighters standing and surrounding the graveside to honor their father's memory.
After the short service concludes, The bugler begins to play taps as all the firefighters give a last salute to their fallen comrade. As the last note fades the Fire department honor guard march to and around Andy's graveside. Then the Firefighters that are to fire off the gun salute gather together and get into formation. Someone yells; "Ready, aim, fire!"
Some people flinch at the loud shots of all the guns going off. Soft crying can be heard through out the crowd. As the smoke clears from the guns and the echoes of the last gunfire fade, Chief Wallace Boden gets up to deliver the eulogy of, Andrew Daren.
"We are gathered here the remember, Andrew Darden, a brother in arms. He was a great firefighter and did his job well until the day in the job that he loved took his life. He won't be forgotten. He is forever part of Firehouse fifty-one. The history that tells its story through the ages. The story is still being told. His Family and friends will miss him until they see him again. Don't mourn him for long. Remember the good times. He will forever be in the hearts of those he left behind. His love forever felt because the tears we cry remind us that we loved him and we shared moments of his life. I will remember him always. Now I'm going to ring the last alarm for this is his last call. He sacrificed himself." Chief Boden says, looking around at the people in the crowd. He looked over at his firehouse fifty-one crew. Each member standing straight and tall with solemn expressions on their face. His two lieutenants fighting tears.
Chief Boden stands by the bell and rings it three times. As the last bong fades, Leslie goes to Kelly and hugs him to her. He clings to Shay as he sobs into her shoulder. His pain coming to the fore-front. He can no longer hold back his tears. As the firehouse fifty-one crew looks at their one lieutenant they get misty eyed themselves. Hallie goes to Matt. He grabs her hand just standing in his spot not moving as everyone stands up and heads back to the firehouse for a meal with family and friend of Andy Darden. Heather holding the American flag that was folded and handed to her for her husband's service.
The group didn't know what to do if they should stay or go for their lieutenants but Chief Boden shook his head and everyone disbursed. Only four people were left to stay beside Andy's graveside. Matt Casey has a haunted look on his face as he remembers the fire in which Andy died. The scene playing a loop inside his mind. Hallie watches as he sinks to his knees leaning forward toward the ground.
She goes to hold him in her arms rubbing his back as tears slowly slide down his face. He begins to silently sob into Hallie's chest as she holds him to her. Kelly is still sobbing in Leslie Shay's arms. Sobs echo in the graveside as two brothers say their last good-bye. The deeply felt pain hard to bear alone anymore. Kelly, takes a step away from, Shay and looks over toward Matt still on is knees.
Kelly goes over toward Matt and gets onto his knees beside him. Leslie goes to stand by Hallie as she stands up as Kelly holds Matt. Comforting his little brother in shared sorrow.
The sobbing ceases. The quietness surrounds them. Kelly and Matt stand up. Hallie hands them both a tissue so they can blow their nose and wipe their eyes. The four head back to the firehouse to gather at the meal to remember their friend. Matt walks between Kelly and Hallie and Leslie walks on the other side of Kelly. Matt suddenly feels light headed as he grabs onto Kelly's shoulder to keep from sinking to the ground. Black spots dance in front of his eyes and his face drains of all color and his world fades to black. He knows of nothing that happens next.
