"I can't believe Mogs spend hours sifting through this." I say, watching links upon links appear and disappear on the screen faster than I can read. Facebook links, Twitter links, links with no identification other than long numbers and letter combinations.
"Yeah it kinda sucked." Adam confesses. "But it was the best I could do to stay in Virginia, I needed something that would keep my dad cool while I was finishing up."
"What were you finishing up?" Marina asks inquisitively. One look at her tells me that she is fighting sleep, but she is probably trying to wait for Nine to get back.
Adam smiles sadly. "One was fading and I promised her I'd save her. They still had her body in there, in the laboratory and I wanted to convince the scientists (Insert Name) to hook me up again."
Marina's eyes widen. "They still had her body?"
"Yeah, they were keeping it preserved and everything?"
"Were there any other bodies? Any other Garde?"
Adam thinks for a second and then shakes his head. "No, just One's."
I put my hand on her shoulder and she looks at me with confusion. "This was way before-." I trip over my words a bit, I never wanted to bring up Eight to the other Garde. "-They took Eight's body, like several weeks."
Marina blinks and gives a smile that doesn't reach her eyes. "I know, it's just maybe they are keeping the other Garde too. If we could get their body's back then they won't be able to do any more experiments on them."
Malcolm shakes his head sadly. "Even if Adam could show us where they were keeping the bodies what could we do with them."
Marina bites the inside of her cheek and then says ruefully. "I don't know. They wouldn't be with the enemy though."
Adam looks around him at the rest of us and then back at the computer. "This is just one program, I bet we could set up another that would let us see the messages sent back and forth. Maybe even tap into their files."
My dad and I smile at eachother. This is pretty awesome.
Adam runs a hand through his hair and then tells my dad that if he had a Connector circuit he could set the system up to function as a wall breaker and stay invisible all at the same time.
Dad thinks for a second. "Did we bring in the black bag full of gadgets, I bet we could figure something out."
Other than the glow of the laptop we can't see anything. Luckily Marina can.
"I don't see a black bag." She says apologetically.
"We could run out to the van real quick." I suggest. We hid the Van under a camoflauge tarp we found on the side of the road. Apparently everyone has something in Camo in the South, from Florida to Alabama I never failed to see a man wearing a camo vest or a woman wearing a camo dress, even little girls with camo bows. It's insane.
"Malcolm and I can go." Marina nods. "If something happens it was bound to happen anyway right?"
"Can't deny that logic." I quip.
Marina stands straight after a few minutes of bending and her back makes cracking sounds. Dad rises off the stump he was sitting on and follows Marina to the door. Marina stops and does a quick scan outside. The shack walls are thin enough that we can hear their careful footsteps all the way to the van a few meters away from us under the tarp.
"How are you feeling?" Sarah asks Adam who looks surprised to be asked this.
"I'm…alright thank you, just glad I could get something started. I feel like people were starting to doubt me."
"It has more to do with you being a Mogadorian stowaway rather than them doubting your abilities I bet." I reassure Adam. "Once you get us into some more sites and maybe into Setrakus Ra's mansion they'll feel a lot better."
Adam chuckles. "I don't think he has a mansion dude."
"I'm sure he has his sights on the playboy bunny mansion?" I joke, Sarah looks at me with narrowed eyes.
"The what?" Adam asks.
"Never mind." I give up. "What kind of house did you live in anyway?"
Adam takes his hand off the mouse and wipes his hands on his pants. "It wasn't a mansion, but since my dad was a general it was a pretty impressive house I'd say. Much better than the one on Mogadore."
"What's Mogadore like?" Sarah asks. "Can you remember?"
Adam twists his expression. "I remember, it was…barren. Not at all like Earth and definitely nothing like Lorien."
"You got to see Lorien?" I ask with awe.
Adam shakes his head. "Just once, I was eight years old and it was the day Lorien fell."
"Oh s***." I say.
"Yeah, not too good of a memory right?" Adam laughs darkly.
"Yeah." I agree "You probably shouldn't share that with the others."
"If they ask I'll tell them." Adam shrugs. "I have nothing to hide. Besides, I was a different kid back then."
Marina and Malcolm return with the right gadget and it is plugged into the computer. "I'll set this up." Malcolm says. "And then you can punch in the passwords."
"Sounds good." Adam affirms, leaning back into the wall.
Marina yawns and tries to hide it. "Nine will be back soon." I ebb. "You look really tired."
"No no, I'm fine." She babbles. "It's just night stuff." She waves me off and I don't push her.
"I think I'm gonna go sleep." Sarah says taking off her jacket.
For a shack the floor wasn't so bag. It had concrete floors, but it wasn't covered in as much dirt as you'd think. Six had Nine take out the mass of spiders webs in the corners. I was kind of hurt as a male that she didn't ask me. I would have totally been willing to pretend spiders didn't make me want to burn the world down if it meant being a hero to Six. Nine just plucked them down with telekinesis before I could even grab a broom. I was relieved either way though. I hate spiders probably more than Six does. We emptied out a few bags and stuffed them with soft things to make pillows. Other than that there wasn't anything to use as a blanket.
"Goodnight" I chant, "Don't let the bed bugs bite."
Sarah stops and looks around the floor, I shouldn't have mentioned it.
The door creaks open and Nine walks through, or at least I hope it's Nine. I can barely see.
"Did everything go alright?" Marina calls, which makes me feel better.
"Yeah, they liked it in the cave. So I guess it'll be our new patrol house until we relocate or whatever."
Nine is about to walk over to us but he stops as if he remembered something and then moves towards the table. He's in range of the computer's light now so I can see as he thumbs through the stack of plates. "What are you looking for?" I ask.
"Nothing." He mumbles. For whatever purpose he had, Nine walks away with a blank face so it apparently went okay.
"Anything new?"
"No." Dad says. "But we are trying to break through the Mogadorian database and from there we might get to pick up on some of their messages."
"Yeah." Adam rubs his hands together with anticipation. "After that we can basically use this program here in reverse and we can pick any keywords that will bring information up on us or Ella or anything really."
"Sounds good." Nine says in a tone that I'm not sure is either genuinely impressed or just passive. He casts a glance at Marina and then looks back at the computer.
My dad yawns and leans back the best he can without falling off the stump. "Going to bed?" Adam asks.
"I don't think I could if I wanted too." Dad sighs. "I'll wait until I'm tired enough to crawl up in a ball."
"You can sleep in the van if you want too." Nine offers. "The Chimera are watching out for s***."
Dad considers this for a moment. "I'll go with you." I want my dad to get enough sleep. Back in the penthouse while it was going down and trying to accept the fact that my dad was about to die had really hit me…hard. I just wanted to spend every moment I could next to him.
"I'll be fine." He waves us off. "Besides we still have a lot of work to do."
"Like what?" Nine asks.
"We are going to infiltrate their communication methods." Adam tells him, typing in codes.
"Well alright then." Nine grins wickedly.
