"Whoa, What's that?" Sam asks. He points at a sentence.
Adam finds the sentence and enlarges it.
HUMAN BOY SECURED IN CONFINEMENT:
Name:Mark Anthony James
Location of Capture: Paradise, Ohio.
Crime: The infiltration of important and top secret information. The attempt to release said information to the public through the use of social media.
Date of Execution: September 1st of this year.
Approved by Mogadorian Superior Setrakus Ra.
"That's Mark." Sarah gasps. "They have Mark!"
"The infiltration of important and top secret information. The attempt to release said information to the public through the use of social media.." Sam reads aloud to himself.
"Mark, he was that boy who we said goodbye to on our way out wasn't it?" Six asks.
"Yeah it was." Sam confirms. "He was a real jerk and then he let us slide like that."
"What kind of information did he find out?" Adam asks aloud. "That's the real question."
"What are the Mogadorians trying to hide?" Nine asks Adam.
"They are a group of a hostile aliens living in secret on Earth." Six points out. "What do you think?"
"Yeah." Nine continues. "But it says 'infiltration of important and top secret information' doesn't that sound like there is a bit more to it than just that they are here?"
"He has a point." I agree. "Whatever Mark uncovered—would have really tripped them up."
"We're not going to let him be executed right?" Sarah clings to my arm. I see fear in her blue eyes.
"It's not like we have much of a choice, right?" Sam asks.
I think about it for a moment. If Mark had really managed to acquire some crucial information on the Mogadorians, and if doing so had gotten him into some kind of trouble, then we needed to help.
"Let's do it!" Nine cheers. "We've been idle long enough, a rescue mission would be the perfect warm up."
"You don't even know the guy." Six says flatly.
"So, you do." Nine crouches over so he can read the report. "We've got plenty of time to do this too, Septemeber is like, a week and a half away."
"Do we know where he is exactly?" Six asks Adam.
"Yup, it's-."
"That's where I was imprisoned." Sam gasps. Mark is being kept in the same place that Nine was imprisoned so many months ago.
"We could make that in a couple of days." Nine smiles widely. I can tell he's picturing wiping out the entire base single handedly.
"So are we all agreeing then?" I ask the group. "Do we have our mission."
"I'm in." Says Six.
"You know I'm in." Nine snorts.
Marina's eyes wander around the screen. "Yeah, I'm in too."
Sam hesitates a bit. And I think I know why. I nudge him on the arm. "What about you Sam, are you in?"
Sam's eyes widen for about a half second before he tries to look cool. "Of course."
"I'd love to put my training to the test." Sarah smiles.
I smile for her, but it terrifies me. I don't like the idea of having the girl I love in a sticky situation, but I really have little choice in the matter. She's one of us now.
Ella
I'm pacing my room back and forth trying to make the anxiety in my heart go away. During the day I'm the perfect little Mogadorian heiress. I say the right things and my training goes down smoothly. This entire year I have listened to what Loridas has told me. He had convinced me that his plan for the Great Expansion was a good idea. I can see it playing out well, Loridas had even agreed finally that I could help my friends see the light like I have. We could all play a part in making us all a new planet to live on. I know I'm not much of a leader now, but I could get there eventually.
All of this sounds good, but then there is that egging feeling that breaks me somehow. I'm so afraid for my friends to find out the truth, that I am related to the very being that had taken everything from us, Our families, our home, our history. How could they ever accept me? I'm not one of them, and I was never one of them from the start.
Hot tears run down my face and I let them. I am really beginning to loathe myself.
The Next Morning
Reah is lecturing me on The History of Mogadore, as requested by Loridas. I'm not into learning today and she can sense it.
"Ella…where is your head today?" She asks, the Great book splayed neatly across her lap.
"I dunno." I mumble, and look off into the corner of the room.
Reah watches me and softly closes her book. "Is something the matter child?"
I shake my head. "You wouldn't understand."
Reah purses her lips for a moment before saying…"Oh, I see.—Why don't you try me, hm?"
Open up to her.
A jolt is sent through me, did the voice come back? It was so soft I couldn't tell. Open up to her I think it told me. Open up to her about the truth? How can I?
"Ella?"
I look at Reah. She looks so young but so old aswell. I can see the mother inside her, nurturuing, caring, trustworthy…I take a deep breath.
"It's—my friends."
"Go on."
"Loridas says that he will no longer plan to hurt them, and that's great…but I miss them terribly—oh so terribly."
"You may see them again sometime soon, perhaps then you can show them the blessing that Loridas will bring to Earth and the remaining Loric children, hm?"
I shake my head. "But you see, they will hate me. After they find out I'm his granddaughter they will never want to trust me again. I'll just be another commodity. I can never show my face around them again…"
"They are your friends, you must lead them to the right path regardless."
"Is it the right path Reah, do you really think so?."
Reah looks at me with shock, but I keep going. "I mean, this planet is the home of Billions of human beings with their own families and we're just going to take it all away and lay down a new system? How is that right?"
Reah looks thrown off, she remains silent. I look down at my lap and try to blink back tears. My palms are clenched so tight that my hands glow red. They do that sometimes.
"Listen." Reah murmurs. "I can't say that I am one hundred percent sure of the great expansion…but I have a family too, that I must protect from harm. Evolution happens, solar syestems and planets must adapt and change. Earth is set for change and I see no other way to halt the change on the horizon. Hear me out Ella, I see great things in you and if you feel like the Great expansion is a wrong move then you should strive to change it. I can do nothing, but you- ypu can do anything if you believe in yourself too."
"You believe in me? Why?" I sound so feeble.
Reah takes a long deep breath. "Because Ella, in a way, you remind me of my oldest son."
"The one who dies in battle?"
"No, Ella I wasn't completely honest with you—yes I did raise a boy who died in battle, but he wasn't my son. No, my son's name Is Adamus Sutekh and he is still alive out there, I know it. And even more so I know he has joined a human man who, in the past had helped the loric children escape safely into the far reaches of the world, out of sight and safe. Or, atleast for a little while."
"Whoa." I say. "What was the man's name?" I say urgently.
"I-I don't know—it was a strange name."
"Malcolm?"
"Yes, that's it!"
"I know your son! I mean I've heard of him. " Quickly I tell Reah everything I know…and slowly I tell her even the parts I hate to have to tell her. Her smile fades.
"They don't know where he is?" Reah sighs.
"It's been a year, maybe he had been found by now."
"My son, my Adamus…I'm so very certain he's out there somewhere…that brave boy of mine."
"Your not mad that he ran away?"
Reah shakes her head. "I love my son with all my heart, I know that Adamus did what he felt he had to do. I miss him terribly of course, but no, I could hardly ever be mad at my own child."
We sit in silence for a minute or two. I know Reah is probably thinking more about her son. I am too. This Adamus, he gave up his life so that he could help my friends. I don't know if they accepted him, being a Mogadorian and all but if they accept him, then maybe they could accept me too.
-
Later that night, I'm in my room inbetween sleep. I keep tossing and turning, something's not night. Finally I sit up, sweat is pooling on my face and neck. I try taking deep breaths, what's going on with me?
In a flash I'm a walking down the hallway, I'm going way to fast, it's like I have super speed. The white metal doors are a blurr, but I also know where I am. I get to an elevator and once I'm inside I hit a different button and I'm transported. The doors open and I travel past a tall painting of a strange landscape. Then a long expanse of a white wall. I stop suddenly infront of a wall—no, it's a door too. I reach out my hand and touch the wall. A touch screen appears. I hit five buttons and then the wall slides open revealing a new room. In the room are four long silver metal boxes longer than a bath tub. I'm right up next to it when I hit a button. The top lifts off and smoke obscures my view.
And then I'm back where I started, in my room. What have I just seen? I know it can't be a coincidence. That was a real vision. Something was leading me to a room, but what was in that room? Curiosity outweighs my fear of being caught wandering around the halls. Quietly I stand up and make my way to the door. I try to listen intently for any sounds outside the door. When I'm sure I hear nothing I crack the door and peak out. The hallway is dimly lit. As I walk down it softly I think about how it makes sense for there to be a secret room. I'm not exactly in a house, I'm in a mansion of some sorts where there are tunnels that connect. I get inside the elevator and push the button that I had seen in my vison it flashes blue. The elevator falls, and even a minute later it's still going. I have time for my suspense to grow, I wanna know whats in that metal box. Whatever is inside I know must be important or else I never would have seen it. I'd still be in my room asleep, resting for tomorrow when I would get to travel with Loridas to meet with some American FBI agents. The elevator stops and the doors open. The area I'm in now is illuminated by dimmed wall lanterns and flashing computers. In the distance I see a tall painting and once I'm in range I recognize the same painting of the strange, alien landscape. I walk past it, ignoring it's reddened colors and follow the white wall down until I notice the slightest difference in the wall. Gently I press my palm to the cool wall and as expected the touch screen appears. I hit in the digits
1-2-3-8-6
The wall opens and lights flicker on. It takes me a moment to realize they are automatic. I regather my strength and I approach the metal box closest to me. I see the button that I know I need to push. It makes a sudden clicking sound and the top of the box shrieks as it opens. White smoke billows around me. I cough and wave my hand around to scatter the freezing vapor. Out of the smoke I see a human corpse. I take an involuntary step back. My hand rushes to cover my mouth which lets out a shriek. I turn away and give myself a moment to recover. Finally I turn around on my shaky, jell-o like legs. The body belongs to a stunningly beautiful girl, she looks young, but older than I am. Her fair hair is put neatly behind her head. Her eyes a re closed and rimmed with dark blue. She is wearing surfer shorts and a white t-shirt. The t-shirt is stained with blood, blackened with age. I wonder why the mogadorians kept her, was she tortured to death? I quickly hit the button and the lid closes. There are three more white boxes but I really don't want to see any more dead bodies. As quickly and quietly I came, I leave the same way.
