Chapter 24:

Heavy Sleepers

Eren woke up with a heavy feeling across his chest. His body felt rough, his chest heaving to breath. He slept hard, his eyes hardly wanting to open, as they would rather stay closed, unmoving. Sniffling, he tried to wake his body, stirring his toes, trying to move his arms.

He jerked his arm back, but he let out a silent scream as the memories he had almost forgotten came flooding back to him. His arms jolted out, the left over pain of its dislocation causing him to let out a quick sweat. The hiss left his mouth was searing and long, as he waited to for the sting to subside back into nothing.

Waiting, he opened his eyes, letting the bright light flood in and surround his mind. Good, it was still light outside. Turning his head, he heard it crack, before he noticed the figure of Levi's sleeping figure. He, too, was sprawled across the couch, asleep in the crook of Eren's arm. They were both naked, a sticky mess left across Eren's stomach. He shook his head, trying to wake him a bit more.

Eren took notice of the sleeping face below him. Levi's face was soft in comparison to when he was awake. One of his arms was draped across Eren's stomach, the other lay beneath him. The fine hair of his was brushed, draping down, every strand a sliver of softness. He resisted the urge to brush away from his forehead, and to kiss that peaceful forehead of his.

From this angle, Levi looked like a little boy, if not for his chest, that was broad and flat. Eren could lie there for months, tracing the strong outlines of his body, feeling every bump and bruise of his body. He could memorize every divot, spot on his body, and trace every bone. He couldn't help, but squirm under the weight of his thoughts.

He turned away, holding back his wandering thoughts. Last night was a blur, but their night together was blurrier. Everything had happened so quickly. But, although, they had made up, there was still an invisible space between them, bending every time they communicated. It was thinner than it was a week ago, however, he didn't know if they'd ever completely get through to each other.

But, for now, Eren was content. He didn't need a declaration of love, or Levi's endless devotion to know that he cared. He had proved that yesterday, when he responded as he did.

Levi proved he felt for Eren. As much as he tried not to recognize it, Levi was quite a tell in his emotions. He constantly hid his true feelings, opting to rather pretend everything is quite all right for him. And, a part of Eren wished that he could understand that part of Levi. But, he also knew, that would come with time.

He'd be patient, but he hopes that Levi might be able to trust him enough to relax himself. Eren worried about him sometimes, always so formal, seemingly always stressed. He couldn't help but wonder if he was truly as calm as he made himself out to be.

Eren was confused with himself, for what he really felt for such a different man than himself. They had such different personalities, different ideas, different views, and even different dreams. But, they were connected is such a way, that it made it impossible for them to get along for too long.

Funny, though, that it only intrigued Eren to continue coming back to him. Their relationship was more complicated than ever, and even if Eren pulled away, he didn't see himself being able to untangle himself from Levi ever again.

This is when Eren realized what Levi truly meant to him. He wouldn't be easy for him to forget. He was much too attached for that now. However, he was scared at the same time, worried for this commitment that he had never experienced. He'd always been by himself, never expected anything as love. But, it was this inexperience with love that forced him to ask himself, if this was truly love.

Letting out a short yawn, Eren stretched his legs a bit, before going to move from his spot on the couch. He could continue sitting there, but his stomach had begun to speak to him, begging to be fed.

Slipping silently from the soft cushions of the couch, he made sure not to wake Levi. Slipping on a pair of boxers, he began moving to the kitchen, his feet stuck to the ground, but he stayed quiet enough that he was able to reach into the cupboard and pull out a skillet.

He wasn't sure what Levi wanted for breakfast, so he pulled what little food they had from the fridge, and started cooking. He kept a small eye on the family room, to make sure Levi wasn't coming. But, the man was sleeping like a rock.

Eren had been a bit embarrassed to take him to his house just yesterday. Compared to Levi's complex, Eren's house was the size of his bedroom. Any person would feel their house inferior to Levi's. And, defiantly not as clean either. But, Levi had hardly made any comments that insulted him.

He pulled some plates out, hearing the sounds of his cooking sizzling, and he took a deep breath, calling upon whatever powers may help him create something edible. He wasn't a terrible cook, but Levi's cooking was something that Eren enjoyed.

He was feeling a bit self-conscious. This isn't usually him, for; he usually chose to ignore those who were better than he. But, having some one new in his home made him anxious and nervous, his palms sweaty. He coughed into his arm, making sure it was away from the food.

Continuing, he hummed to himself, the light little tune his mother used to sing to him. It was the song that he always found himself going back to, and at times, he couldn't get it out of his mind.

"Eren?" Eren looked up, ready to say good morning to Levi, when he froze. Mikasa had entered the kitchen, looking in quietly, to see what he was doing. His breathing became quickened as he tried to create coherent speech. But, the words were caught.

He had called Mikasa, before Levi had arrived, the day before. Eren explained to her that he was all right, and was reassuring her that things were going to be ok. She was in hysterics, panicking, but Eren had tried to reassure her as calmly as he could.

But, he had felt the tears tug at his eyes when he had talked to her, knowing that she was so worried about him. He really loved Mikasa, couldn't ask for someone better to be his sister. It didn't matter if she wasn't related to him, because she was family to him.

He was lucky to have gotten her calmed down the day before, since she was at work, he made sure she was calm before she went back to waitressing her tables, but Eren knew she wouldn't be home till this morning, due to her night shift. But, he had forgotten till just a moment before.

And, how he wishes she wasn't here right now. Yes, he wanted to see her, but he defiantly didn't want her to see Levi, who was sleeping soundly in the other room, without any clothes on. His eyes widened in realization as Mikasa came closer.

"Eren! Eren, are you alright?" Her voice seemed quickened. He could hear the worry slathered in her tone, her eyes slanted as she tried to breath calmly. For an emotionless girl, Eren could tell that she was panicking mentally, and all he could think about was calming her down.

"I'm fine, Mikasa!" Replying hurriedly, he just wanted to reassure her, maybe, get her to go to the grocery store or something so he could get Levi out of here.

"Obviously, you are not. Your arm, is it broken?" She had tears welting in the sides of her eyes, her hair in a messy bun, hairs splaying out every time her body shook. Realizing, the content of her the mental state, he ran forward, bringing her in for a hug. She leaned into him, her arms at her sides, her face burying into the crook of his neck. He could feel her tears fall down his naked back. She was cold, and Eren was holding her tightly, feeling her slender, but muscular arms against his chest. A

He squeezed her closer with his one feasible arm, feeling her breathing labor and he waited there, waiting for her breath to finally loosen. She was muttering into his shoulder, and he could hardly understand.

"I was so scared." She spoke, and Eren only held her closer. He felt like he should apologize, like it was his fault, even though it actually wasn't. But, he regrets doing this to her, for she loved him more than he could ever love himself.

"I know, I know. Look, I'm fine, just a couple of broken ribs and a dislocated shoulder. That's the worse of it." He pulled away quickly as she sniffled.

"See, these bruises don't even hurt anymore." He poked one of the bruises above his right nipple, and clenched his teeth to stop at wincing at the pain. But, he knew, his efforts were lost; since she knew that he was lying. He couldn't hide much from her.

"From now on, I pick you up from work." She told him, scolding him now for what had happened. She wiped at her tears, finally feeling as her old self again. He took a deep sigh.

"Mikasa, it'll be fine."

"No, I can't have you hurt again. Who hurt you? I'll make sure they never hurt you again." Her eyes suddenly grew angry, wide and determined, her scowl returned to her face, as she realized what her revenge would be.

"Not important. Mikasa, I'm fine, see." He held one of her hands, bringing it to his chest with tenderness. He wanted her to know that he was truly all right; he didn't need her out of control, like this. He couldn't bear for her to be so distressed because of him.

He brought her fingers closer, letting them quiver in her touch before placing them on his shoulder. She was silent for a moment.

"This is where I dislocated it." He began to shift his arm; just enough so that it didn't pain him, but he could reassure her, it was still moving.

"It's healing, but it's alright. As is the rest of my body." He said it slowly, hoping the words would finally register in her mind. He silently begged her to calm down, hoping that this cold finally prove to her, that everything can go back to normal. It was only a freak incident, they could move on.

"Do you need anything?" Eren saw the opportunity and took it. As much as he wanted to spend some time with his sister, Mikasa didn't need to know about Levi this way, he'd tell her in his own time.
"Yes, the doctor complained about my vitamin levels. Do you think you could pick me up some fruit from the store? I just got paid last week so we should have some money." Eren flashed her a smile, reassuring her that this was the only thing he needed. Mikasa looked up from her hands, giving her brother a small smile before walking away, turning towards the door.

In a few moments, Eren heard the front door close behind her as she went to pick up what Eren had asked.

"Was I about to interrupt something?" Eren's attention was brought over by Levi. And, was he relieved he sent Mikasa on her way.

Levi stood, butt naked, in the middle of the doorway between the two rooms. The morning light laminated his whole body, but Eren couldn't help his attention be drawn to his penis, that hung limply between his defined thighs. A second longer, and Mikasa could have witnessed something unspeakable.

"Where are your clothes?" Eren hissed at him, a light blush on scattered across his cheeks. Seeing him naked, outside of the moment, seemed much more embarrassing.

"On the ground in the living room."

"And, why aren't you wearing them?"

"Thought, I'd give you something of a view." Levi made his way past Eren, who was standing stunned in the middle of his kitchen. His hips swaying, Levi made his way to where the food was sizzling in its pan. He used the whisk the contents inside, cocking an eyebrow when he went to speak again.

"So, who was that? A cousin? A lover?"

"NO!" Levi's eyebrows shot up in surprise at Eren's reaction at the last one. He turned slowly, taking in Eren's face, which held a mask of cooling anger. Eren rubbed his bandaged arm, quickly realizing the effect of his voice. Sheepishly, he looked directly at Levi.

"She's actually my sister." Eren felt like he needed Levi to fully understand that Mikasa was only his sister. He felt as if Levi had to be reassured, even if there wasn't a misunderstanding in the first place.

"She doesn't look like you."

"Adopted sister."

"Orphan?" Levi questioned. Eren moved forward, opening the door to the cupboard, looking for something that could go along with their breakfast.

"Her parents were killed." He decided to answer, solemnly. His head hung slightly, as memories flashed through his mind.

He remembered, years ago, when he was only nine years old and stupid. It was a memory he had buried since then, remembering how it felt to feel the warm, thick blood run down his arm, slicked on a bloody knife. Remembering, how his tiny body surged with power, looking down upon men three times his size. Even for their size, he knew they were weaker than he and Mikasa as the blade ran smoothly across their skin, leaving a scarlet line. His eyes closed for a moment, trying to hide those emotions that were fighting to surface.

"Huh, guess we have something in common."

Eren's eyes shot open with surprise. His body rigid, he stood there, trying to figure out what face would be appropriate to face Levi with. He suddenly felt awkward, out of place, as if that was something he shouldn't have heard. Gulping down air, he turned around to face Levi.

Levi bore into him, as if he hadn't even realized he had said anything either. Silently, they watched each other for a few moments, before returning to what they were doing before. Eren pulled out what he needed from the cupboard, and Levi went back to stirring the food, in a small silence.

Walking in silence back to the living room, Eren plucked Levi's clothes from the ground, and brought it back to him.

"Put them on, you're cooking." Eren complained. He threw the bundle of clothing to Levi, who caught it with ease, rolling his eyes.

"Tell me about this family of yours." Levi spoke up, diverting the attention on him while he put on his boxers. Eren walked over, placing the container of noodles on the counter, before going to pull out a cutting knife.

"All of it?"

"Do you honestly think I'd be that interested? I don't know, just give me a wrap up." If Levi was trying to seem disinterested, he wasn't doing the best job of it, but Eren appreciated the efforts.

"I was born up north, to my mom, Carla, and my dad, Grisha. Mom was around to take care of Mikasa and I, while dad was usually gone most of the time. I had a normal childhood, I guess, until one day, mom got really sick, and my dad left to find help, but…" Eren scoffed and shook his head, cursing at that old man who had left him distrustful.

"Years later, he never returned, mom died, leaving Mikasa and I by ourselves. We came here, were homeless for a couple months, but we were young, finding jobs weren't too difficult." Eren waved off the bad memories of those times. That one time a teenage girl knocked over their home of boxes underneath an old bridge, because it was "disgusting". Or that time a homeless man took a knife to the front of Mikasa's dress, exposing her before Armin's grandfather had rounded to the corner, the authorities on the other side of his phone.

He made it seem like the time had hardly an effect on him, but that was a clear lie, and he was pretty sure Levi saw right through it, but he stayed quiet for a few clear seconds.

"So, you chose the who- Club?" Eren looked up quickly, but Levi was looking the other way. He had caught himself this time, from saying the word "whore". So, this meant he really was putting in the effort to not offend Eren. It would have made him smile, if he didn't realize Levi's intended insult. But, he let it go.

"Eh, it made good money." This ended the conversation, as no one talked afterwards. Eren was bouncing his leg, slamming the heel of his foot into the ground at every tick of the wall clock. He couldn't place why it was so awkward, where neither seemed to have the right words to say.

"I told you about me, you're turn." Levi let out a sigh at this, spinning his body slightly, hunching his shoulders.

"What do you want to know?" Eren was about to respond, when the door to the front closed expectantly, causing him to jump. Levi looked towards the doorway where the footsteps were coming closer.

Eren's eyes wide, he knew exactly who it was.

"Eren, they didn't have what you wanted. I hope that's alright." Mikasa's voice stopped short as she came into the clearing of the kitchen, noticing Eren using a cutting knife, and the strange man beside him.

Mikasa went to open her mouth, but she was taken off guard. Getting a hold of herself, she stood a little straighter.

"Do we have a guest?" She questioned. Eren saw the opportunity she had opened, setting down the knife to introduce the two.

"Mikasa, this is my boss Rivialle. He had helped me home from the hospital, and stopped by for breakfast." He left out the staying over part, because he really didn't want her to make a connection. Mikasa looked at him with weary eyes. She has always been distrustful with new people as it came with her past.

"Rivialle, my sister, Mikasa." Levi nodded towards her, acknowledging her presence. Mikasa froze, realizing just what type of man he was. He was arrogant, one who knew they held a sort of grace over everyone else. Although he was short in stature, he held himself confidently, as if he was the biggest thing in the room. Mikasa has dealt with people like him before, and they never got along. But, she owed him.

"Thanking for taking care of my brother." She bowed her head slightly, in respect. Plus, she was finally meeting this mysterious boss of Eren's, one who had finally given him a true job, and for that, she'd act civil.

"Uh huh, now set the table." His way of blowing her off sent a ripple of anger through her veins as she held herself back from requesting him to be polite. Eren gave her a look that told her she better hold back, but something about the man off put her.

She looked towards Eren for help, before noticing her brother's lack of decency.

"Eren, we have a guest, put on your shirt." She scolded him, before moving to grab the plates. Eren only looked down, realizing he wasn't wearing one, oops. He moved away from the cutting board, before hearing Levi mumble "I don't mind it."

Hitting his shoulder with his one good one, Eren began to walk away. But, before he reached the living room where his clothes were sprawled in a mess, with a condom on top of it, Mikasa suddenly wondered about something.
"That black car outside must be yours, I had thought it was the neighbors." She thought for a few more moments, before realizing something else.

"Then why was it there when I got home earlier?"

Neither boy answered her, as they tried to ignore the question by looking too busy to answer.

This chapter is so freaking late, I'm so sorry. I'm really really busy right now as school is coming to an end, and plus I had this writers block that left everything I was writing to be shiiiittt. So, pardon my lateness.

I had to put some Mikasa love in there because she's really important to Eren, and I hope you saw a bit more of their pasts. And, yes, I know what happened in the latest chapter of snk, (chapter 56), but until everything is confirmed, I may or may not go back and fix a couple things.
