The thing is, when you don't know the course of the past, how do you save it? How can you protect what you don't know about? This time scares me because now I don't know what has/will happen to anyone…
Irey, Wally, and Artemis meandered down the street with a cone in hand. The air was awkward between the 'family'. No one had said much during the walk, how to start?
"I know that this has all been…" Wally began, searching for the words desperately.
"Awkward?" Irey put in with a small smile.
"Yeah—I mean no," He fumbled. "No, I mean yeah. This whole situation has been one big fat awkward moment." Wally smiled as he tried to keep the mood light for her sake. Artemis gave his hand a light squeeze. "I've been horrible and you've held the weight of everything for everyone. You have been stronger than all of us, Irey."
Irey looked down at the pavement, "I know that you are trying to lighten my load. Bringing me down here," she gestured around at the block, "But what is on your shoulders is not the same as what is on mine."
Artemis looked up at Wally and then back at Irey. "Irey…you shouldn't be worrying so much. You're young and you don't need this weighing you down. You have time, we are going to fix this."
"You're young too," Irey retorted. She sighed slightly, taking a cold bite of her cone. "Time—this isn't the time that I belong in. Everyone knows it. Especially me. I'm here forcing you two to make decisions you may or may not be ready for. I don't like that feeling… And yet everyone is treating me like the victim. I feel more like the culprit. Had I listened to Bart, this wouldn't be. I'd be home, nothing would be—"
"—Wally wouldn't be though," Artemis interjected. The blonde grabbed her arm lightly, dragging her attention to her. "It's good to listen to orders sometimes but sometimes you just can't. If you hadn't saved Wally, sure there wouldn't be the problems we are facing now. Nothing would be tense and confusing. But if you hadn't, things would have just ended, moved on rather. I-" she gestured to herself, "-would have been alone still. But now I'm not. What's happening now is worth it for me and for all of us in the long run."
Artemis grabbed their cones and handed them to Wally. After, she pulled Irey into a bear hug. "You aren't the culprit, Irey. You are a savior. A hero." Irey's eyes stung with tears and she breathed shakily at hearing her words. "You're my hero, Irey. You brought back the love of my life and your father. You've only done good, not bad. So stop thinking that it's all your fault or that you are forcing decisions on us."
Irey laid her head on her shoulder, tears streaming down her cheeks. "I'm sorry…mom. I just…I want to go back home so I can hug both of you properly. So I can know everything worked out in the end. Not be a part of it."
A gentle hand patted her shoulder. "I understand. This isn't your home…exactly. It couldn't be your home if you don't even have a room yet," Wally stated. He gave her a warm smile when they looked at him. He could really see the resemblances between the two. They both had the same nose and big eyes, though Irey's were colored like Wally's. She had more of his square jaw too. "We have to make it yet for little Irey."
Artemis smiled slowly. She grabbed onto his arm and pulled him into the hug. "C'mere Baywatch." Even she had some tears on her cheeks. Wally and Irey both laughed. It felt like she was home, like everything was going to be okay in the end. She'd saved her father and they were going to save her, so everything had to be okay.
"Let's go get some pizza, I'm starving," Wally announced.
Artemis gave him a weird look and the hug broke up. "Had enough Watchtower food, huh?"
Irey gave him near the same look and he had to look between the two of them multiple times. "Man if you two aren't related," he said sarcastically and began to walk off.
They rolled their eyes at the same time and followed after him. They went to a nearby pizza parlor and ate a good four pizza's between the three of them. Mostly between the two of them. Irey ate one by herself and split one with Artemis, eating most of it while Wally ate the last two by himself.
Artemis watched him inhale the last piece with an eyebrow raise. "How are you feeling Wally?"
"Still hungry," he smirked, patting his stomach. "I'd love to order more but that might be suspicious." Wally relaxed against the back of the booth seat, watching Irey finger the Parmesan off her plate and lick it off.
"You've been eating more and more lately," Artemis noted. "How are you feeling speed wise?"
He shrugged, "Haven't tested it. Though I feel a little cooped up."
"The speed force is what gives us our powers and so it can take it as well as give it," Irey explained. "Being a part of it for as long, or well as little, as he was has probably rejuvenated him." Both of them were looking at her and she continued, thinking she needed to. "It both helps and hurts us. Wally was slowing down before being taken into the force and now that he's out, he's getting...quicker. Back to his prime rather."
"So…I can run like-well when I was young?"
Irey nodded her head side to side, "I'm only theorizing."
"Hmm…could it fade again?"
She shrugged, "That I don't know. If I knew this past, I could tell you but I don't know what happens to you from here on out. Any of the Team really. With bringing you back, anything could have changed." Irey looked between the two of them, shrugging again. "I wish I could be more help but once I brought you out of the force, I knew nothing. Until I get back to the future, I won't know what has already happened."
Artemis squeezed her shoulder, "We'll be able to figure it out as time goes on. Don't worry about it, Irey. These are our worries, not yours. Okay?"
Irey gave a small smile, nodding. "Okay."
"Let's get going, we can visit the Hall and then take you back up to the Watchtower," Wally said.
Irey paused in getting out of the booth, looking down briefly. "Um…" She looked at them. "Can we possibly visit with Jay for a bit?"
Artemis shared a look with Wally before they nodded to her. "Sure," he said, smiling softly. "I'm sure he'd love it."
Since Jay hadn't been home yet the three decided to head to the Hall of Justice. Irey still had time yet to visit with the old speedster. She smiled slightly as she took in the sights, the sounds. Without warning, the two stopped in front of her and she walked directly into them. She stumbled around them to see Flash.
Flash, battered, tired, and bruised was bent over, panting. Flash…panting? That sent off alarms in all three of them. Flash grabbed onto Wally's arm, "G-get the girls," he panted, "to the tower."
Wally was about to say something when another man came up suddenly and held Flash straight with an arm around his neck. "Having a good day, kids?" He asked with a smile.
Irey grabbed onto Wally's arm with a little gasp.
"Wally…go," Flash ordered hoarsely.
Eobard squeezed his neck tighter, getting a choked sound from the speedster. "Now, now, is that really how we treat such a happy moment? Don't you want to save your family?" He coed.
Wally and Artemis glared at him but it was Irey who acted first.
"Sorry Uncle Barry," she said before speeding back and then forward and ramming into Flash and in turn Eobard. The two tumbled to the ground, Flash winded and rolling slowly back up to his feet with some effort while Eobard stood quickly, grinning from ear to ear.
"Now that's a surprising twist. Not afraid of damaging your good ole Uncle huh?" He asked her.
Wally was quickly at Irey's side, Artemis rushing over to help stabilize Flash. "Go Irey," Wally said in a whisper. "I'll give him a distraction while you get the other two safely away from here."
"He's after Irey," Flash grunted.
Irey's eyes widened slightly as she looked at the Reverse Flash. "Why?" She breathed.
His smile grew thin and his eyes closed to mere slits. "Not exactly, Barry." He sped over to Artemis, lifting her up by the neck. Artemis grabbed his fingers as she now faced the other two, her legs kicking back at him. He snapped her neck before barely a move was made.
The world slowed so quickly that as quick as Flash and Wally charged toward Eobard, it looked like they were moving as fast as a turtle. Irey stood in shock, frozen by the sight before her. Artemis fell to the ground, her eyes rolling to stare blankly at the sky. Irey saw her mother's life disappear in a snap, felt it in her core like ripping a paper in two.
Words resonated in her mind slowly. "…none of you are fast enough to save everyone."
The world sped up and Wally was holding onto Artemis, shaking her lightly as he called to her. "Artemis! Artemis," he called. Even Flash was shocked still, staring down at the younger two. "Artemis, c'mon babe. Artemis!" Tears began to fill his eyes as he called to her. "Artemis, please."
Irey stared at Eobard who stared back at her with the most pleased look. She rushed forward, running between the three of them with her arm arched. Flash followed with his eyes, reaching out to grab her. His hand went through her arm though. And as she punched at Eobard's chest she phased out, disappearing from sight.
Wally caught the end of Irey's attempt of vengeance, holding tightly to Artemis now. Tears ran down his face and he rocked back and forth on the ground with her. Wally put his forehead to hers mumbling, "Please come back. Please, Artemis!"
From here on there are two ways that this story can go. And it's up to you guys to save Artemis or keep her dead. Whoa that sounded so terrible to me... Well anyways, I want you guys to tell me if you think she should come back or not.
Thanks for the support guys! I appreciate it so, so much. And I'm sorry about how long it took me to finally update this story.
