So it has been awhile since they took off and emily was sound asleep in the passenger seat,so paige had a little bit of thinking to do,she might have been a bit vague about the things she told emily,so the least she can do is to come clean about all of it,i mean not everybody can trust you and be willing to spend the weekend with a complete stranger,so she made her mind in took a turn,only to stop infront of this little place in the side of the road,it was a like a small cabin people can rest in and shook off the tiredness of the long drive,plus it served the best coffee.
She stopped the car so quitely not to bother emily,she figured she would wake her up with a nice cup of coffee.
''emily,emily,time to wake up''she said a bit higher through the half open window on emilys side but not too loud to scare her.
Emily craked her eyes open not wanting to wake up,but smelling the delicious aroma.''how long was i sleep ?''she asked.
''the whole way,it's decaff''paige said handing her the large cup of coffee.
Emily felt a bit sad for not being the best copilot,''so i wasn't a good company then''she chuckled.
''it's okay''paige assured,thinking how cute emily looked when waking up.
''i thought you might want to take a walk,get some fresh air''it sounded like a good enough reason to get emily out of the car and tell her more about the situation.
''yeah,sure''emily took the coffee,and went to open the door,slipping a bit of it in the car,''i'm sorry i slipt coffee in your car''she said as she closed the door facing paige.
''don't worry,it's okay''she said as she led the way to take a walk.
After a few moments paige said''there is some things we need to talk about''.when emily didn't stop walking,paige felt like she should go on and continue''i told everybody that you're more than just a date,that you were myyyy girlfriend''she finished.
At this emily stopped walking and looked to paige facing her,feeling confused but also overwhelmed,but overly surprised her mouth open and her eyebrows near her hair line.
''your girlfriend''she repeated.
''yes''was paiges short answer feeling sick about liying and coming clean this late and not giving emily a way out sooner.''i know it's low and kinda manupilative and everything ,but,,''she got cut off.
''what were you going to do about the room situation''emily having just too much fun.
Hearing this paige looked up and said''we won't look good in seperated rooms''.
''i need the bed''emily said half joking half serious.
Paige smiled,she was happy and very grateful emily agreed to this and didn't look freaked out by this last minute informations.''yeah,fine,sure,i'll sleep on the floor,couch,wherever''.
''what about privacy''emily negociated.
''yeah,fine, sure''paige agreed,about now paige was ready to say yes to everything emily said.
Feeling satisfied emily said''okay,i'll be your girlfriend''.
In that moment paige just wanted to give her a hug or a kiss-no not a kiss get it thogether she's just being nice to you-,just to show her how much she appreciate all of this,but what really happened was just her standing there saying a simple thank you and dipping her head down and nodding with graditude.''thank you,thank you''.
After resuming walking paige jumped and said''you know we can pretend we are in a fight,that way we don't need to be affectionat''but she didn't have to finish,emily had a totaly diffrent idea.
''oh,we don't fight sweetheart''she teased,if they needed to fake it,she better start practicing now,''you know what sweetheart doesn't suit you,what do you like better,honey or patoony muffin''she suggested very seriously.
Paige was very amused by the turn of events,and if this is how emily looked when she was thinking or solving cases,she wondered how does she win any ,because she looked so cute and so innocent like a little child that nobody would take her seriously.
''pagiey is fine''paige answered laughing at her nickname,her friends started calling her that and it never stopped.
''paigey''emily repeated not able to stop her laugh,''okay paigey,so tell me why do you have to lie to your friends''she gave paige a suspecious look,''oh,are you like a stalker who sends ananomous texts to people''she made up her own story,yes it does sound crazy but you never know in these days,people are scary sometimes.
''what ?nonono''paige kept saying,denying the accusation.
''so what is it ?''emily asked.
Paige dipped her head down trying to figure out a way to explain what happened without sounding like wounded puppy,because she wasn't,i mean she was at first but now she is fine -or that what she kept telling herself,''i had been left at my wedding day about a year ago,well fourteen months actually''she said peeking at emily to see her reaction.
''ahhh''Emily was heartbroken for paige,because a normal breakup is hard on most people,let alone being ditched on your own wedding day,it must be a hundred times worse.''do you still love her ?''she asked wanting to know how paige is feeling.
Paige looked up to see emily looking at her with those beautiful brown eyes and the answer seemed to be very clear''no, i hate her''she answered truthfuly''.
Hearing paige's answer made emily crack a little smile,paige smiled back and said''well you know it hasn't been easy for me,and i don't want my overly concerned friends to still think i'm suffering.''
''well,they won't,they won't,because i'm gonna be so madly in love with you,i'm gonna be so into you,that she's gonna be sick with jealousy..and regret''emily said with so much convincing it actuallu scared paige a littl bit,and made her think that maybe her plan back fired.
''what about to just keep it low key''she suggested.
''oh,no no no''emily said with an evil look and more devilish smile''low key would get you nowhere,paigey''she said taking a sip from her cup of coffee.
Paige lost at words and little bit intrigued about what emily had in store for her,them,and her friends.said a simple thank you and to seal the deal they clicked their cups in cheers.
After finishing their coffee they resumed the journey,only for paige to take a detour from the highway and take a more deserted route,apperently the wedding was held at this very secluded country hotel in the middle of the woods,that had a view on this big lake,and a huge field in which people play sports and just relax in the warming sun of the summer.
Paige brought the car into a stop and shot the engine down,both she and emily steped out of the car and made their way to the trunk to take their stuff.
When paige pulled out a nice looking suit in a plastic wrap,she couldn't help but ask,''what's up with the tux''.
''oh this old thing, the bride wanted me to wear a braidsmaid dress that was really unflaterring,but because i know both bride and groom i asked if i could change sides and wear something a little bit suits me.''
''ok,so i'm gonna need some historical data if we gonna make this look convincing''emily said trying to have some informations to go on with to try not look like an ignorant girlfriend.''like where you went to school ?''
''it's gonna be fine we will win it''paige assured not wanting to reveal too much about herself,then she closed the trunk and started walking torwad the hotel entrance.
''what ?no no no''emily shouted,trying to catch up with an advanced paige''what's your favorit color ?''she started again with a more basic question.
''brown''paige said.
''brown,''emily repeated,not expecting that answer.''that's a little bit grim''she answered.
''that's where i went to college''paige said to clarify the mistake.
Emily a little bit taken back by the answer replies''and you work in a bagel store ?'',wanting to know what exactely made a college graduate to work such job.
Paige didn't answer and kept walking,making her way to the entrance of the cozy but the very elaborate space,so when emily didn't get an answer,she decided to aviod deep questions and to stick more to the surface,light questions,so she grabbed paige's arm to make her slow down a bit and ask her''where did you grew up ?''.
''boston''she answered.
''siblings ?''she asked.
''ahh,older sister,younger brother''paige felt a bit uncomfortable answering these questions not because she was hiding something it's just because she figured that what's the point,it's not like she would get any chance with emily after this weekend,so why bother get close to someone only to get seperated after.
''Names?''emily continued oblivious to paiges discomforte,luckily a loud vioce inturrepted the interrogation and made both paige and emily look straight ahead,to see a man and a woman to be their age coming their way.
As they approched emily took note of how attractive the two were,the woman with short blonde hair,blue eyes and wearing what looked like a very expensive designer cocktail dress,also the guy was very handsome with brown eyes and a slightly longer locks than most guys,you'd think it will look outdated and hippie-like but he actually pulled it off to be really nice and very unique,also wearing a black tshirt and a jacket on top of it.
''paige''the girl said similing and opening her arms fo paige to hug her.
Paige didn't waste time and closed the space between them in a bone crushing hug,she missed her friends very much,it's been too long,''hanna,look at you,you look gorgeous''paige exclaimed after pulling back a little.
''it's all because of me,McCullers''said the guy still standing behind his girlfriend,waiting for his turn to greet his best friend.
''look at you,Mr handsome,how are you''paige teased,skipping to give him also a hug,and show him some love,maybe he acts like he hates it but deep down she knows he's a big softie.
During all this emily just steped back and watched how happy paige looked in that moment,she also could see that paiges was loved by her friends, and how protective they were of her,remainded her of her own friends-toby and spencer-who became her family.
A very happy and smiling hanna made her way to emily who was lost in thoughts,''hiiii''she cheered.
''hi''emily said, stepping into her arms for a quick hug.
At this moment both paige and caleb made their way next to thier ladies,so caleb could greet emily,
''Hello,how are you''he said in a deep vioce, trying to be funny.
''hi,i'm fine''emily answered in a deeper vioce,that made the three friends crack a smile.
''well ,it's finally nice to meet you,we've heard so much about you''hanna said.
''well,,i'm,,,i heard all about all of you guys''emily said a little bit shakey at first.
''well you guys better check-in,there is a croquet tournement in 20 minutes''hanna said excited,joining her hands in a quick applause.
''yeah,let's go''said caleb reaching down to help with bags,but just when paige turned around to give him the heavey one and make him suffer a bit,and have a laugh on his expense,she looked over his shoulder to see her former girlfriend/fianceé who had her arms linked with who she assumed to be her new girlfriend,the couple made their way to the group and their friendly banter turned into a dead silence.
Meanwhile and inside emily's head two thoughts were circuling,first that must paige's Ex girlfriend , and second she was thinking what the hell did this girl do to paige's friends that they look so displeased by her very own presence,and especially hanna,who she looked like she wanted to tell her what's on her mind but for paiges sake she was being civil about it,so a mean look would do for now.
''hi''said paige breaking the bubble.
''hi''answered the tall black heared girl,
''hi''a shy greet came from caleb,only to be met with a glare from hanna.
The intruder -thats what emily will call her for now-returned her stare in paige's direction,and lingered a bit too long for emilys liking,which made her step closer to paige and make their shoulders brush for the intruder to step in front of paige and give her a hug,what's up with hugs with these people.
Paige was being a bit in shock,she knew she would meet her sooner or later because they shared the same group of friends but she didn't see it coming this sooner,but she didn't make it show tho, she leaned into the hug and said ''you look great''stating the obvious,apparently her Ex was doing a much better job getting over their break up.
''you too''the stranger replied,pulling away and retaking her spot next to her date.''well i just thought we could get this out of the way before the big ceremony''she explained,with a fake smile,well for emily it looked fake and not honest.
''i'm shanna in case you haven't already guessed''shanna said extanding her hand for emily to shake.
Emily shook her hand''i'm emily'' and decided to have a little fun with this shanna girl,and start her little scenario of making everybody believe that her and paige are so madly in love to the point where her fake date's exgirlfriend will comeback crawling for paige to give her a second she pulled paige by her arm and sneaked both hands around paiges waist and got really cozy,resting her head in the crock of paiges neck,then she said''well,i'm glad you dumped paige,cuz otherwise,i couldn't have claimed her as my own''emily finish with a little laugh,this was a low move, emily knew that but it served it's purpose,just wait for it.
''i'm sydney by the way''said shanna's date who until now was only standing by watching the whole scene unfold, reached out to shake both paige's and emily's hands,not like her girlfriend, sydney's smile looked more honest and sincere,''i'm really glad we can all be adults about this''she said,sounding a bit relieved.
A collective ''yeah'' was heard,signaling that all parties involved were on the same page,and wanting to enjoy this weekend,and have a great time together.
''yeah,until tomorrow''caleb joked -or was he being serious- making the rest of the group burst into laughter.
''so are you an employee at the bagel store too ?''shanna asked well that didn't take long emily thought,trying to diminish her.
''she's a lawyer''was hanna's response,this was one of the things why she hated shanna,her way of making people look smaller,and being such an arrogant bitch sometimes made her think how in the hell her friend was about to get married to such an aweful person.
''oh,wow,you must not have a lot of spare time,i mean i know how hard young lawyers have to work''she said,emily was conflicted,because she was impressed by how good she was at twisting words,even if she gave you a compliment it held a lot of insults,she's good emily thought.but she didn't care about what shanna said about her or her job because it was all a defense mechanisme to make her self look better,and show paige what a mistake she did by dating a young lawyer,but emily had a diffrent idea,that how she feels right now doesn't matter and all that matters is that she is the one holding paiges hand not shanna,and she would make sure to get her point loud and clear.
''Yeah,well that's nothing compared to how hard i do work to make paige go out with me''she said looking at paige with twinkley eyes''i mean she was dating two different girls at the time''a whistle came from caleb's spot''but you know i'm a lawyer,i eventually get what i want''she finished.
A shallow and an awkward laugh was shannas reply,not wanting for this awkward conversation to get any longer,caleb jumped in and said loudly and reaching for the deserted bags''croquet,let's go''.
The four of them headed to the reception erea where emily and paige checked in and made a promise to meet up with hanna and caleb before the game started.
