Chapter 34
The Past Buizel
"Whoa," I murmured as we approached the cave.
It's mouth was huge, possible as tall as the guild would be if you'd taken it out of the cliff face. The top of the mouth had jagged pillars like teeth pointing down towards us. Along the bottom of it were similar jagged rocks that pointed upwards.
"It is said that a huge pokemon died right here from a horrible, horrible disease where its bones grew out of its skin. In fact, the cave's mouth is shaped the way it is because the pokemon's jaws locked into place when they grew too big. It died of starvation right here," Future Wylie told us in a grim, quiet voice. "In time the fossil turned to solid, unmovable rock. But several have claimed to see the top of the mountain tremble as they enter as the old pokemon tries to close its jaws upon them and finally eat. Some even claim that they have seen the creature's spirit in a small, disarranged form as it walks through the halls of the body it used to have."
"That's not creepy at all," our Carry muttered.
"Why are you telling us this?" I wondered, staring up at the cave curiously. It seemed... familiar.
"You don't remember?" Future Wylie asked in a small murmur of a voice.
"I do," Austin whispered, and flinched. A shiver went down his spine, and I instinctively padded next to him and put a comforting paw on his shoulder. I took in a gasp of a breath as I remembered, too.
The Past Wylie
Many Years Before the Umbreon
Back when Austin was a riolu, our friend Laek was only an eevee (instead of a jolteon), and I was even shorter, we lived a few miles outside the guild in a small village with our parents and a few other families.
Austin, Laek, and I raced through the forest, feeling at home. I raced past my two friends and tapped Austin's shoulder, yelling, "Tag!" as I went. I kept running, but Austin had stopped and Laek soon after. "Austin?" I turned and asked my friend.
"Wylie," he whispered. He looked so lost, with his eyes wide and unfocused and his body shaking with tension. He slowly, slowly lifted a shaking arm and pointed.
I turned and saw a huge mountain whose mouth looked like it had terrible teeth sticking up from the top and bottom.
"What? What's wrong?" I gasped, unable to understand.
Austin didn't answer at first, just stood and shivered. His eyes flickered into focus at the mountain and he managed to stutter, "D-d-death..."
I raced over to him and Laek, feeling terrified in my helplessness. "What do you mean?" I begged him to tell us more.
"He's talking about the cave," Laek said in his calm quiet voice. He walked past me and stared up at it. "Someone is dying there, I think."
"Y-y-yeah," Austin whispered, beginning to shake harder. "So-so-so... So much death..."
"He's feeling the death," I realized in a whisper. My eyes widened. "Touch him, Laek, touch him! Feel happy, too. It'll make Austin feel good instead of bad."
The two of us rushed next to him. Leak put a paw on his leg and I gently laid a paw on his shoulder.
Laek and I stood very still despite Austin, who still continued to shake.
I closed my eyes and thought of us running through the forests, playing games and being happy. I heard our laughter in my mind and smiled.
"Thanks," Austin said quietly, and I felt him step forward, Laek and my paws falling to our sides. Austin stood still, his face to the mountain. "Someone's in trouble." he turned back to us, balled a fist and said, "We have to help them."
"I'm in," I said immediately, stepping forward.
"Same over here," Laek told us, then nodded and stepped forward.
Austin smiled, but it didn't reach his eyes like usual. I sensed that he could still feel the sadness and terror that I imagined spawned from that cave in the back of his mind and was eating at him. Austin turned back to the mountain and said with a firm resolve, "Let's go."
He started running towards the mountain looming ahead of us, Laek and I at his heels.
We fearlessly entered the cave and ran through to the very end, where we saw a very scary sight.
My older brother, Hawk, another buizel, stood in front of a little green pokemon with a blade in his hand. The green pokemon struggled to lift her head up. I noticed blood dripping down her side and pooling next to her body.
"Hawk! What are you doing?" I gasped.
Hawk turned to us. I gasped again. Blood dripped down his face, and I could tell it wasn't his own. His narrowed red eyes gleamed with adrenaline-induced fire and his mouth turned up in a creepy smirk. "You're next," he whispered.
The green pokemon croaked, "Run. Save yourselves!"
Austin growled and drew energy to his palms. He stepped forward and threw the aura sphere at my brother.
It hit Hawk hard and sent him crashing into the wall behind the green pokemon. The knife clattered onto the ground beside the spot where Hawk just had been.
I threw my arms up in an X shape above my head and yanked them down to my sides, an aqua jet splashing water around me as I launched at my older brother. I smashed into him, sending me flying back and my brother a few inches deeper into the rock wall. I landed beside Laek with a thump.
Laek suddenly jumped to his feet and used hyper beam. No wonder he'd not taken part before hand; he was charging up.
Hawk was thrusted further into the wall.
Austin suddenly ran to Hawk, picking up the knife and holding it above his head.
"Stop!" I yelled. "Don't kill him!"
Austin whipped around to face me. He motioned towards the green pokemon and said, anger on his face, "He would have killed her!"
"Does it make us any better than him if we end his life?" I demanded from my friend, hope in my eyes. "It won't! I swear!"
Austin looked at me for a long time. Then, he, without moving his gaze from me, soundlessly threw the knife into the rock and began to walk back over to us.
Later he'd tell me that that was the day he realized what killing really was. It means you end someone's life permanently. Forever, in fact. A big word. He realized that Hawk might have been a killer, band from our village long ago for killing an elder, but my parents still loved him. He knew that even though Hawk's life might have ended, his presence- or lack of- wouldn't and my parents would be devastated.
He also swore he'd never kill.
I knew he meant it.
Then I noticed my brother twitch in his hole in the wall that we'd busted him into.
"Austin! Watch out!" I yelled.
I used quick attack. I ran, bounced off the wall, and threw Austin behind me. At the same time my brother jumped up and grabbed his knife from the wall. He faced me now, so I spread my arms out in front of Austin.
"You wouldn't kill your little brother," I insisted, setting my jaw and narrowing my eyes at him, trying to pretend I wasn't afraid to die.
Hawk smirked. "I wasn't going to."
He narrowed his eyes and threw the knife sideways towards Laek, who stood charging another hyper beam.
"Laek! Jump!" I screamed.
Instead of jumping, he opened his jaws and unleashed a huge hyper beam that disintegrated the knife. Austin got up off the floor and threw two aura spheres. For the first time, I formed a water pulse above my head and chucked it.
All three attacks hit Hawk and threw back him into the wall. His eyes swirled, signalling that he was unconscious.
"Yes!" we three shouted in joy.
Austin, remembering the green pokemon, ran to her. Laek and I followed him immediately.
Austin fell into a crouch beside her. He stared at her wounds for a moment before looking up at me and asked with hopeful eyes, "Can you heal her?"
I sat down next to the poor little thing and took a deep breath. I was just about to begin before someone said calmly, "It's alright."
I simply turned my head, but Laek and Austin jumped to their feet right away and took up a battle stance.
Three pokemon stood at the doorway: one with a pale blue body and pink hair, one with the same body and blue hair, and the last with the same body and yellow hair. They were small, only about a foot; the same size as the pokemon I was about to heal.
Austin held up a paw and began drawing energy to it. "Who are you?" he asked in a demanding voice.
The one with pink hair laughed and asked, "None of you have heard the Creation legend?"
"What are you talking about?" Austin asked. "Just tell us who you are, or I'll shoot!"
I looked down at the green pokemon and quietly began to speak what I remembered from the legends. My mother's flowing, soft words came back to me from when I was even littler, "There once was a time where there was nothing. The great legend, Arceus, then chose to create pokemon. It made Dialga, whose presence brought time, Giratina, who brought antimatter, and Palkia, who brought space. With space and time he created all the other legends, including Celebi, who took forests of rock pillars and made them alive, the weather trio to make it rain for the forests, and so on. Last he made Mew and Mewtwo, whose job it was to create all the other pokemon with their own abilities. Mew and Mewtwo could not do it with love, though, because they had no feeling. So, without love, their creations died. Arceus made the three lake guardians: Uxie of Knowledge; Azelf of Willpower; and Mesprit of Emotion. From them Mew and Mewtwo learned love and created other pokemon through it."
"Very good," the yellow one smiled. "Do you know who we are, then?"
I looked up at her honestly and said, "I do not. I apologize." Then I looked down at the green pokemon and gently laid a paw on her wound. I noticed Austin disperse his aura sphere and Laek sit back down and then turn to watch as I healed the green pokemon.
When I was finished I stood back.
The green one stirred and flew into the air above us. She smiled and said, "Thank you. I am Celebi, Guardian of the forests."
"You are welcome," I told her, then bowed my head. I turned to the three beings and realized, "You are Uxie, Azelf, and Mesprit." I nodded towards each to my friends.
"You're legends? No wonder your auras are so strong," Austin said, awe slipping into his voice.
Uxie, the yellow one, glided forward a step and praised, "Very good, children. Now. We were a tad late to save our friend, but you three were not. You defeated the other buizel and worked together at it. We have decided to make you three a proposition."
I bet you can guess that she wanted us as Chosens. You may not be able to guess that when we accepted, we fully understood what they were telling us. Every word sank in. When we told our parents, they did not believe us, but we believed in ourselves and each other, which was more important. Austin's father disappeared the next day, and we weren't sure why until the previous, gruesome day.
The Past Buizel
The Future's Present
I stared at the floor and said quietly, "No. I remember."
Austin began walking forwards. "Let's get this done," he said.
We all followed him through the cave.
