Hi All! First- I know this is my second time posting this chapter. It didn't work right the first time. Sorry! Also, I have a bit more time to write this week so send in ideas via reviews so I can get up another chapter this week! Thanks for reading!
A week later, Brittany, Santana, Quinn, and Rachel had forged an unlikely but ultimately successful friendship. To everyones disbelief, Rachel and Brittany bonded instantly and Quinn and Santana (when they weren't jumping down each other's throats) were closer than ever. In just a week, the four girls had managed to develop somewhat of a routine and every day since their first night together, Brittany and Santana had been over to the Berry residence. The Berrys insisted that sleepovers were not appropriate for school nights but exactly a week later, the next Friday, the four girls left their glee club rehearsal together, Brittany and Santana each toting a duffel bag full of sleepover necessities.
Hiram welcomed the foursome into the house. Leroy and Hiram were still a bit unsure about Rachels most recently acquired friends and Hiram especially was a bit skeptical of their motives. However, both Brittany and Santana had been nothing but a joy (despite Santana's quick wit and crude remarks) and both Hiram and Leroy had fallen for Santana's charm and Brittany's sweet nature. Of course, Quinn vouching for their honorable intentions had helped put their worries aside.
"Hi Mr. Berry!" Brittany squealed as she entered the house first. "Hi Bethie."
"Hello Brittany." He replied handing little Beth over to Quinn who scooped her up and held her tight. "I'm going to go get a bit of work done in the basement so you girls can have the living room. Let me know if you need anything."
"Thanks Daddy." Rachel replied.
"Yeah thanks Mr. Berry." Santana added.
"Hiram, Santana. I've told you a million times." She nodded and smirked at him. Brittany and Santana followed Quinn to the couch while Rachel ran up to her and Quinn's room and grabbed a towel Quinn could use to cover herself while she fed Beth.
As Quinn began to feed Beth, Santana, Brittany, and Rachel started their own homework. Santana graciously agreed to help Rachel and Brittany with Spanish. Rachel was embarrassed to admit that since she had spent much of the last to class periods of Spanish with her head in the toilet, she was painfully behind. As for Brittany, she could always use a bit of help.
As Rachel shifted around on her seat on the floor, Santana took notice. They were using the coffee table as their work space and in order for them all to be facing the table, Brittany and Rachel were sat on the floor and Santana and Quinn on the couch.
"Take my seat Berry." Santana ordered.
"I'm fine Santana but thank you." Quinn looked up for her math equation to check on Rachel. Knowing Rachel and knowing pregnancy, Quinn could predict that Rachel's back was probably killing her from sitting on the ground. At four months pregnant, Rachel wasn't showing too much however she very noticeably had a baby bump that was much more pronounced on Rachel than Quinn's had been on her due to Rachel's shorter stature.
"Alright, shortcake, suit yourself." Santana replied, adamantly opposed to calling Rachel Rachel and instead had resorted to a repertoire of less offensive and often rather sweet nicknames for her.
A knock at the door came before Quinn could enter the conversation. Quinn moved to get up but Brittany beat her to it.
"Brittany?" The voice at the door asked.
"Hi Frannie!" Brittany replied and both Quinn and Santana's eyes widened. Rachel, however, was utterly lost and turned to Santana. When she was sure Quinn wasn't looking, Santana mouthed 'her sister' to Rachel. Getting up, Quinn turned to her sister.
"What are you doing here, Frannie?" She asked. Before Frannie could reply, Santana was packing up her and Brittany's stuff and grabbing Brittany's hand.
"Well we better be going. Thanks Berry, Quinn. Nice to see you Frannie." Santana said as she pulled Brittany out the door.
"Bye Frannie! Bye Rachel! Bye Quinn! Bye Beth! Bye Rachel's baby!" Brittany called as she followed Santana out to Santana's car.
"What are you doing here, Frannie?" Quinn repeated.
"Quinn maybe we should have this conversation in private" Frannie suggested beckoning to Rachel who was already trying to get up. Quinn immediately went over to Rachel and helped her up. Both girls could feel Frannie's eyes on Rachel's abdomen. Wrapping an arm around Rachel, Quinn turned to Frannie.
"Anything you can say to me you can say to my girlfriend." Frannie visibly flinched at the word girlfriend but recovered and made her way to the chair opposite the couch. Quinn returned to the couch were Beth was in her baby seat and this time Rachel joined her.
"Quinn, I know that you've talked to mom-" Frannie started before Quinn cut her off.
"I called you twelve times the night I was kicked out. Twelve. You didn't pick up once. And now you think you can show up here?"
"Quinn…"
"No Frannie."
"Quinn I really think we should be alone for this." Frannie said softly, almost apologetically.
"Quinn…" Rachel murmured, speaking for the first time, which was frankly very un-Rachel to be so quiet. "Quinn I think she's right. Let me take Beth. You two should take." Quinn nodded.
Once Beth and Rachel had retreated into the kitchen, Frannie started again.
"Look Quinn. I understand that you are going through some sort of phase. And while I can't understand it, I realize that maybe you aren't willing to forgive mom and dad and move back home. So I have decided that you can come live with me and John." Quinn moved to talk but Frannie stopped her. "That little girl shouldn't be raised in this house. In a house of sin." Quinn was now standing up.
"Look Frannie. I think you need to leave. Rachel and I are happy and so is Beth and you obviously can't understand that but I would appreciate if you just let us be." Quinn said, her voice much louder than she intended.
Hiram, finally aware that something was going on was now ascending the stairs. He quickly surveyed the situation and introduced himself to Frannie.
"Hello. I'm Hiram Berry, Rachel's father." He extended his hand but Frannie ignored it and him.
"Hiram, this is my sister Frannie. She was just leaving." Quinn responded still glaring at Frannie who was glaring at her with equal intensity.
"Quinn. I think you need to think about this. Stop being selfish and think of your child." Frannie said.
"You know what I think you need to leave." Mr. Berry said as he walked to the door and opened it for he.
"Quinn please." Frannie said, her voice close to pleading but more confident. At that moment, Rachel returned from the kitchen carrying Beth.
"Frannie you had no right coming here. Quinn is happy here. Actually she's much safer and cared for than she ever was with you or her parents. Now, I respectfully ask you to leave as you have now offended, me, my girlfriend, our daughter, and my parents." Rachel announced giving Frannie and vivacious death stare.
With one last look at Quinn, Frannie left. Both Hiram and Rachel turned to Quinn and moved to comfort her but she just shook her head.
"Rach. Do you think you could call Santana and tell her it's safe to come back?"
"Sure… but don't you think we should talk about this." Rachel asked, already rubbing Quinn's back lovingly.
"No. I really just want to eat cookie dough and watch The Proposal for the millionth time." Quinn replied sadly.
"Okay hon. But when I get back we are going to have a discussion about the negative health effects raw cooke dough or namely raw eggs have on ones body." Quinn chucked solemnly and reached for Beth.
Once Rachel had gone into the kitchen to call Santana and Hiram had returned to his office, Quinn squeezed Beth close to her chest and kissed the top of her head. In a voice so quiet it was barely audible, Quinn cooed to Beth.
"Oh baby, I really think I'm doing the right thing for you. At least I'm trying. Please forgive me if I mess up." Quinn allowed one tear to drip down her cheek before she wiped her eyes and composed herself.
It only took five minutes for Santana and Brittany to return. Rachel attempted to non-verbally communicate with both of them that they should just drop the whole Frannie thing and they must have gotten her message.
They spent the rest of the night watching rom-coms and eating junk food. After dinner (a ridiculous amount of vegan pizza that none of them were proud of consuming), Quinn, without Rachel who was instructed by all to just sit down and stop coddling Quinn, put Beth to bed. Not much later, an exhausted Rachel was asleep on the couch with her head on Quinn's lap. One movie later and Brittany was asleep in Santana's arms.
Whispering as to not wake Brittany or Rachel, Quinn posed a question to Santana.
"What's going on with you two?" Quinn asked gesturing to Santana and Brittany who were cuddled up in Leroy's giant arm chair. "And don't give me any of that we're just friends crap 'cause I know you two have been fooling around since eighth grade." Santana sighed before answering.
"I don't know actually." Santana answered, "She's been trying to get me to… you know… make it official but I don't know. Like what you guys go through. I don't wanna deal with that and I really don't Brittany to deal with it."
"You know you're probably hurting her by not making it official." Quinn said softer than before.
"I know I know. It's just… Quinn I love her. Like honest to God love her!"
"Than whats the problem?"
"The problem is we live in Lima fucking Ohio and Brittany is way to fragile to be harassed."
"I don't think you give Britt enough credit. She's pretty damn strong. And also I've learned that excessive coddling and protecting get you in trouble. And at least my girlfriend is pregnant, you're just randomly overprotective."
"Random? Have you met B? She's so innocent and sweet and I couldn't stand to see her trampled!" Santana responded in what Rachel would call a stage whisper.
"Let B make that decision. If she wants you she wants you. Speaking from experience, its worth a couple of asshole bullies." Quinn answered with a doe-y eye smile and loving look at Rachel's head in her lap.
"You really love her." Santana remarked
"I really do. Like how you really love Britt."
"Yeah I guess I really do." A few minutes passed by in silence before Santana spoke again.
"Hey Q."
"Yeah S?"
"This love thing is really freaking intense." Quinn snorted.
"Yeah, S, it really is."
One week later, the doctor pronounced Beth old enough to go her first excursion. Quinn and Rachel had been eagerly awaiting this and were both ecstatic to introduce their little girl to the glee club. While Brittany, Santana, and obviously Puck, were now regulars at the Berry residence, the majority of the club had been living off of pictures and stories. In fact, other than Kurt and Mercedes, none of the other glee clubbers had seen Beth since the day she was born.
The plan was relatively simple. Hiram was free to drop Beth off at the school right after their last class. Mr. Schue had agreed to give up part of his after school rehearsal on Thursday for a little meet and greet with Beth saying that it would 'promote team building'. Little Beth was all swaddled up and covered in warm clothing. While Rachel was a bit anxious for Beth's health, she and Quinn were both very excited.
When Quinn carried Beth into the choir room that Thursday, the entire room stood up. Everyone was anxious to see the littlest glee clubber. Rachel walked a half step behind her girls and before anyone could hold Beth, she established a few rules.
"Glee Clubbers, please find your seats. Before Beth will be passed around for all to revel at her beauty and adorableness, I would like you all to agree to be excessively careful while handling out little girl. If anything happens to her then I will kick your ass." A couple people snickered at this, Rachel cursing was unusual and amusing but Rachel threatening violence was relatively laughable, "Now I realize this doesn't seem that intimidating but I am more than sure that Noah will be very happy to assist me in any violent measures that need to be taken." Puck flexed his muscles to prove her point.
"Thank you Rachel and I'm sure everyone will be very careful with Beth." Mr. Schue said as he rose to his feet and beckoned to Rachel to sit down.
Quinn passed baby Beth over to Tina who had begged to get to hold the little girl first.
"She's so tiny!" Tina exclaimed, "She's like a mini-Quinn!" Quinn beamed at that and sat back down. Rachel however was still hovering over Tina so Quinn made her way to Puck.
"We made a pretty cute kid, Puck." Quinn said, rubbing his shoulder. He smirked.
"Duh." He replied in his signature too-cool-for-school tone. Quinn rolled her eyes. "Everyone loves her." Puck added, glancing over at Matt who was know cradling his daughter.
"Duh." Quinn answered mocking his cocky tone. He smiled at her. Beth was now safely with Santana so Rachel made her way over to her girlfriend. Quinn stood up to give her her seat but Rachel shook her head. Quinn rolled her eyes again before taking her seat again.
"What are we talking about over here?" Rachel asked, trying not to sound at all suspicious.
"About how fucking huge you are." Puck answered with a grin, "Are you sure you're only four months? At four months Quinn was barely showing" Quinn sent him a look that was a mix between incredulous and I'm going to kill you but Rachel just shook her head and smiled.
"Yes, apparently the bump is more pronounced on women of shorter stature." She replied rubbing said bump lightly. Rachel noticed Santana handing Beth over to Mike and she rushed over to supervise. Quinn turned back to Puck.
"What the hell is wrong with you?" She asked thumping him on the head.
"What?"
"You're lucky she's in a good mood." Quinn replied and rolled her eyes again. Something about being around Puck had her rolling her eyes quite a bit.
Beth started to cry about an hour in and Quinn took her back home. Santana agreed to give Rachel a ride home so she could stay. Honestly, Rachel didn't particularly want to stay (something about being simultaneously exhausted, hungry, and nauseous made dancing a nightmare) but she was nothing if not committed to her art and her team so she convinced Quinn to let her stay.
At four months, Rachel was still muddling through morning sickness and while Quinn was getting a bit nervous, she kept these feelings to herself and put the morning sickness off to the fact that Rachel was getting a ridiculously little amount of sleep from the combination of Beth waking them up at least four times a night and stress. However, Quinn hated that Rachel was still barely able to keep down a meal and was running out of nearly every rehearsal to get to the bathroom.
Once Beth and Quinn had left, Rachel and Finn were running the duet of the week that Mr. Schue was convinced was going to be their best number yet. The rest of the club was singing back up and the dance moves were definitely more complicated than usual. Rachel was struggling to keep up. She hated that she was even a step behind when normally she was the first to memorize and the first to perfect. She hated even more that after a complicated move involving a turn, she had to sprint to the bathroom with her hand over her mouth.
Wishing that Quinn was following her, she dashed to the closest bathroom. After a few seconds of being sick she felt someone brushing the hair from her face and off her neck. Assuming it was Santana or Brittany she thought little of it. However, when she was done, it was Kurt who was handing her a paper towel and a mint.
She smiled at him and thanked him. She cleaned up and then turned to him.
"You're not supposed to be in the girl's bathroom." He laughed.
"Honey, please." She chuckled a little as well. "Are you feeling better?"
"Yeah thanks. And thanks for following me."
"No problem, doll. Actually I was hoping we could make a truce." He replied.
"A truce?"
"Yeah. Seeing you clearly not up to your normal standards-" She made a squeak of indignation here but he waved her away, "seeing you clearly falling a bit behind has made me realize that despite my former belief that you were an insane robot programed to make it to Broadway and destroy everything in your path, you are a human. And so I want to be friends. And before you protest, you're going to need some friends and I might be competition now but look at the size of you; clearly it won't be much of a fight in a couple of months so we might as well get a long."
Rachel bit her lip to stop from smiling; it's never good to indulge people when they are being mean to you.
"Despite the fact that most of that was either offensive to my personality or my body, I am going to take you up on this offer of friendship. I'm going to hug you now." They both laughed and hug they did.
As they exited the bathroom hand in hand, Rachel couldn't help but think that in spite of everything, she sure was making some pretty good friends off of this whole pregnancy thing.
