Here's the next one! This is a one-shot song-fiction of Rick Springfield's song "Jessie's Girl" that I like to call "Brendan's Girl". If you've seen the movie "13 Going On 30" (Which, I have not seen; at least, not the whole thing), then I'm sure you've heard this one in the background in one scene.
Basically, if you've heard the song "Jessie's Girl", then Brendan is Jessie, and the one singing the song is played by Drew. You'll also understand that Drew is secretly in love with Brendan's girlfriend, i.e., May, and Drew's venting in song about it. Luckily, this ends well for Drew. How? Well, just read and find out! I hope you like it!
It was yet another day at Pokémon Academy, the top Pokémon school in Hoenn. It was a school that had many classes and courses.
There was a class for Trainers who wanted to go into Gym Battles and win League competitions, and become future Champion Masters, which taught students how to keep focused, improvise moves, learn from the Coordinator students to win a battle, and so on and so forth.
The Coordinator class was a class for aspiring Coordinators that included training for Appeal stages, Pokéblock and Poffin making, and Contest Battles, and how to combine and use combination moves successfully.
Another class was for up and coming Gym Leaders and Type Specialists, which taught the strengths, weaknesses, qualities, and ways to raise the Pokémon type the student wanted to specialize in.
There was a class for Pokémon Breeders, who preferred raising and taking care of Pokémon rather than having them battle. This class taught students how to make their own Pokémon food, how to tell whether or not a Pokémon is healthy, and how to understand a Pokémon's personality. The class really encouraged the students to raise Dragon-types, as they take the most time and effort to raise.
Another class was for Pokémon Doctors, those who wanted to help and heal Pokémon and work alongside the Nurse Joys all over the world by either taking some of the load off of them or being their assistants. There was always an injured Pokémon to help, so demonstrations were almost daily in that particular class.
Yet another class for was Pokémon Researchers, which specialized in mostly field work. Each day, the students in this class would go on a trip to practice their research skills outside; it was much better to do it out in the real world that in a classroom, anyway. They were taught in stealth, observation skills, and how to interact with Pokémon on their own level to avoid confrontation and possible injury.
Finally, there was a class on Pokémon Connoisseurs. These students were Pokémon Trainers who specialized in evaluating and judging the relationship between Trainers and their Pokémon. However, their vocabulary was mostly culinary-art speech, and unless one was from Unova, as the majority of the Connoisseur students were, it was near impossible to understand what they were saying.
Like most Pokémon schools, there was always battling as part of the curriculum. And as such, there was always a battlefield or two for the students to practice their skills on.
Out on the battlefield, there was a teenage boy, with green hair, and green eyes, named Drew. He was one of the top students in the Coordinator course, and his main Pokémon was a Roserade. Drew was waiting for someone outside the battlefield, ready for a practice battle. A friend of his, a boy with auburn hair and black eyes, was on the referee's station, and he was tapping his foot in impatience. His name was Gary Oak, grandson of the famous Professor Samuel Oak, and he was a Researcher Student at Pokémon Academy.
"Where IS he?!" Gary asked.
"Knowing Brendan, he's probably with his girl again…" Drew said, upset.
Brendan Birch was the son of Hoenn's Regional Professor, Professor Birch, and as such, he was also in the Researcher class, like Gary. However, recently, Brendan had been rather unreliable towards his friends for a certain reason...
"Still angry that Brendan has your crush in his arms?" Gary asked.
Drew nodded.
"Hey, guys! Sorry I'm late!" A boy said, as he ran over to Drew and Gary.
He was around their age; his hair was white, with a brown hairline, and was wearing a band on. His color scheme in his clothing was mostly green, orange, and black.
"Where have you been?" Gary asked, near-shouting.
"Sorry, I was with May," Brendan said, in his defense. "The girl's just nuts about me."
'Damn it… Why can't she be crazy about ME?!' Drew thought, bitterly.
May Maple, the daughter of Petalburg Gym Leader Norman, had always been, and always will be, the apple of Drew's eye. She was a brunette with blue eyes and like Drew, she was a Coordinator student. She and Drew first met when Brendan introduced her to his friends; Drew immediately fell in love with May. However, he did not get the chance to say anything, as Brendan had already asked her out, to which she accepted. This broke Drew's heart, but he was not about to give up any time soon.
"Let me guess; you have another date with her today?" Gary said, shaking his head.
Brendan then got a sad smile on his face, and said, "Yeah…"
Drew picked up on this, but let it go; he was probably seeing things.
"So, I have to get going; sorry…" Brendan said, before leaving.
"That Brendan has been breaking appointments with us ever since he and May started going out," Gary said. "It's crazy."
"…" Drew was silent, but then he said, "I want Brendan's girl…"
Gary heard this and turned to Drew, and asked, "What are you…?"
Music turned on out of nowhere, and then Gary groaned, thinking, 'Here goes...'
Drew then started snapping his fingers to the rhythm of the music, and then he had a flashback.
~Flashback - Five Years Prior~
Brendan had showed up to Drew's house, right on time, and then the three boys started playing together. They played catch, Mankey In The Middle, tag, etc., and they were all having fun.
"Brendan is a friend. Yeah, I know, he's been a good friend of mine…"
The boys were then playing in the mud, and they were all being great friends with each other. Every day, they would play with each other, and it was always a good day with the trio.
~End of Flashback~
Drew and Gary then remembered when Brendan started becoming constantly late and/or canceling on them. They had lost count of how many scheduled battles that Brendan had backed out on.
As soon as they thought that, they heard a cheerful laugh. Drew blushed as he heard that voice, as he saw the source of it: May.
"But lately something's changed, it ain't hard to define." Drew sang.
Drew and Gary then watched as they saw Brendan run up to May, and then he lifted her up and spun her around before giving her a hug. Drew grit his teeth and looked down, sadly, while holding a thornless, red rose in hand. Gary knew that Drew was most likely going to follow them, so he nodded, as he put a hand on Drew's shoulder, before telling Drew, "Go get her."
"Brendan's got himself a girl, and I want to make her mine." Drew sang, as he walked off.
Drew was secretly following Brendan and May; the latter of the two was gazing into Brendan's eyes, with a cheerful sparkle inside them and a romantic smile on her lips. May then leaped on to Brendan, snuggling up to him while they sat on a bench, making sure her shoulders were touching Brendan's, and causing him to blush. Drew watched as Brendan then hugged May, and cradled her as they were both blushing and having a moment with each other.
"And she's watching him with those eyes. And she's loving him with that body, I just know it! And he's holding her in his arms, late late at night!"
Drew, jealous, just stayed behind the nearby tree. He imagined himself in Brendan's shoes, as he wanted May all to himself, and wanted Brendan out of the way. Drew imagined him and May hugging, kissing, spending the holidays together, etc. Drew just wanted to go in there and sabotage the whole thing. However, Drew just looked at them, and sighed sadly, as he wondered where he could find a girl as wonderful as May.
"You know I wish that I had Brendan's girl! I wish that I had Brendan's girl! Where can I find a woman like that?"
The next day, Drew just acted like nothing happened, and was very friendly to May, while trying not to radiate jealousy in front of Brendan; the latter was holding May's hand, much to Drew's dismay. Drew sighed sadly, as he imagined himself as Brendan or at least having May on his arm rather than Brendan.
"I'll play along with this charade. That doesn't seem to be a reason to change." Drew sang.
Brendan and May then walked away, arm-in-arm, and they started talking to each other with pet names and such, which made Drew's skin crawl. He then held up his red rose again, and imagined May in the flower, but he shed a tear and then put the rose down.
"You know I feel so dirty when they start talking cute! I want to tell her that I love her, but the point is probably moot."
May was gazing at Brendan with love in her eyes once again, as they were walking to class. She snuggled up in his arms once again, and Brendan smiled as he once again hugged May.
"Cause she's watching him with those eyes. And she's loving him with that body, I just know it! And he's holding her in his arms, late late at night!"
In the classroom, May was secretly looking at Brendan affectionately, while Drew was looking at the scene in disgust while he was trying to do his classwork. He imagined himself once again as May's boyfriend, and wanted to make her so happy, in each of his fantasies.
"You know I wish that I had Brendan's girl! I wish that I had Brendan's girl!"
There was one fantasy where Drew and May were celebrating Christmas together, with May wearing a girls' Santa Suit, which was in a two piece, hat, boots, and all, and Drew was wearing a Santa hat, too. They were under the mistletoe, kissing. There was another fantasy at Valentine's, where Drew gave May some chocolates, which she ate completely, and kissed Drew in response.
"Where can I find a woman like that? Like Brendan's girl! I wish that I had Brendan's girl!"
Another fantasy had May and Drew battling, and Drew was mesmerized by May's beauty in battle, and he was going gaga, while still concentrating on the battle. May's hair was sparkling in the sun, and her eyes were shinning with determination to win the battle. All stuff Drew was going nuts over, but he saw Brendan in the spectator's station, and he subtly narrowed his eyebrows.
"Where can I find a woman… Where can I find a woman like that?"
Drew was in his bathroom the next day. His hair and face was wet, he was wearing a towel on the back of his neck while it dangled over his chest. He was also wearing a towel around his waist. Drew looked in the mirror, sadly, and sighed. He put his hand to the mirror, and then looked down, feeling upset.
"And I'm lookin' in the mirror all the time. Wonderin' what she don't see in me."
Drew remembered one time when he said something to May that made her giggle, which caused him to blush in delight. Drew also remembered when he threw her a rose and said something while flicking his hair, which caused May to blush, and smile, flattered, while Drew did a mock salute and walked away with an air of arrogance around him; it was an act.
"I've been funny; I've been cool with the lines."
Drew came back to reality, and thought those would work, yet he still did not have May as his girlfriend. He wondered if there was more to romance than what he was doing; if so, he wanted to know what it was.
"Ain't that the way love's supposed to be?"
Once again, Drew was thinking about Brendan and May together, kissing all the time, and Drew grew jealous. Drew then just ruffled his hair to get it dry, went into his bedroom, shut the door, and after a few noises of zippers, clothes slipping, etc., he came out, fully clothed, ready for school. He was adjusting the tie on his shirt, as part of the dress code, and then put on some rose cologne, as he always did on a daily basis.
He then looked at a photograph on the vanity of May that he secretly took, and printed for himself. The girl he loved was in love with another, and Drew was discouraged.
"Tell me, where can I find a woman like that?"
Drew was then on his way to school, and he looked at all the couples walking hand-in-hand to the Academy, and wished that instead of May and Brendan, it was May with him as a couple. He sighed sadly, and kept walking, just to make sure that nothing went wrong and he was not late. He soon made it to the academy, where the Coordinator Teacher, Fantina, The Hearthome Gym Leader, was waiting for everyone in the class. Drew soon saw May, but something was wrong; she looked very sad, and Drew, not one to tease a girl when she was down, decided to check on her after class.
He thought about the possibility of Brendan and May breaking up the day before. Drew resisted the urge to smile at the thought of it. He knew that would be far from nice, especially if May really was broken hearted at the moment. He then remembered all the times that may and Brendan were together. They were happy, smiling, kissing, hugging, etc., and while it made Drew sick, seeing May's smile made him very happy.
"You know I wish that I had Brendan's girl. I wish that I had Brendan's girl. Where can I find a woman like that?"
Drew had flashbacks of May during Contest Battles with her friends, and how she managed to overtake Drew every now and again, while catching him off-guard and surprising him with her battling style. He then saw how she and her best friend, a girl named Dawn, made Poffins and Pokéblock together, and Drew blushed as he kept watching.
"Like Brendan's girl. I wish that I had Brendan's girl. I want, I want, Brendan's girl!"
As the music died down, Drew was still down in the dumps about how his love life was less than satisfactory.
Later, after school, Drew was walking home, when he saw sitting May on a nearby bench…Alone. And Drew heard sniveling noises. Drew then came over to May, and sat down next to her, before quietly clearing his throat; he asked, "May, is something bothering you?"
"Brendan… He… He…!" May said, before breaking down in tears again.
"What did he do?" Drew asked; in the back of his mind, he was hopeful of the answer, but at the same time, he was also unhappy to hear what was about to come next...
"H-He d-dumped me! Bwaaaaahhh!" May said, sniveling and crying.
'That… That CAN'T be… But I… I'm glad it is!' Drew thought, but refused to smile; he scowled instead, and then growled a little bit, before saying, "That Raticate! Why would he do something like that?!"
"He… He said that I was getting in the way," May said. "That I was distracting him…"
"From what?" Drew inquired.
"From being a good friend, so he broke it off." May said, before leaning on to Drew. This made Drew blush.
Drew was not sure what to say; if he told May he was happy they broke up, she would get the wrong idea. On the other hand, May needed comfort.
"Brendan was stupid to dump you," Drew said, albeit he wished he was lying. "Especially since he was the one who asked you out in the first place."
"I know what you mean," May said, sadly. "What was I thinking?"
"You were following your heart, that's all," Drew said, putting his arm around May's shoulder. "It's not your fault."
"But… What do I do?" May said, sadly.
"You… Could consider becoming my girl." Drew said, blushing red in the face.
May turned to Drew in surprise, and then she said, "Could you repeat that?"
"I'll be honest with you," Drew said. "I've been in love with you since we first met, May. But… I got so jealous when you were dating that Grimer ball, Brendan, that I was dwelling on it day after day. I've wanted to tell you, but… I never got the chance. But… Now that this has happened, I can finally… make you my girl."
May blushed red in the face, and her heart immediately skipped a beat.
"You… Mean it?" May said, tears still in her eyes.
Drew then kissed May on the cheek, and held it for a few seconds before breaking the kiss, and saying, "I've held back this long, but not anymore."
Drew then pulled May close, and then said, "I know this might be too convenient for you, but I really… REALLY like you. I could… Never betray you the way Brendan did."
"Oh, Drew…" May said, as she managed to just cry and let it out.
Drew hugged May and comforted her while she was crying, and then made sure she was okay afterwords. He walked May home, and then he said, "See you tomorrow?"
May nodded, and before he left, May kissed Drew on the lips, and then before walking in the door, May winked at Drew and said, "Now you have Brendan's girl."
Drew just blushed and then stumbled a bit with a light chuckle. He finally got the girl. As for what happened to Brendan, it turned out Brendan was moving to Kalos to work under Professor Sycamore. He did not want May in the way of his research, so he broke up with her, but he transferred to a school in Kalos a week later.
Either way, May got herself a new boyfriend, and Drew got the girl he wanted.
Okay, okay, alright! I get that this one-shot ended rather oddly, but work with me here! I have lots of inspirations going in and out of my head. I'm also excited to propose a one-shot of Beauty And The Beast (no, not Disney's version) for this pairing… If you like the idea of it.
