Link was depressed. After being with Midna for so long, he had developed feelings for her. And then, she just disappeared like smoke in the wind. He missed her dearly yet she seemed to have left without a single regret.
Maybe he was a plaything. Maybe all he was to her was someone to do her chores and help clean up her messes. But, in the society, that's all he really was. Simply a servant to the ruler of Twilight. A land who's beauty was nonexistent compared to hers.
That hurt Link terribly. But, the salt on the cut was the fact that she never knew. She never knew how he felt when he looked at her. He turned his gaze to the sunset to say what he never uttered.

"Servants, bring me something heavy to drown in," Midna would command every night before bed. Through the padding and pillows, Midna had fallen. The hole was much deeper than any seen before. Every time she tried to pull herself out, she would remember and collapse all over again; weak and vulnerable unlike the ruler she pretended she was.
It wasn't that she was weak-hearted. No, actually it was quite the opposite. Ever since she had returned, men have tried and failed to court her. No, she was waiting for someone. Link was worth waiting for.
It pained her to know that he probably didn't feel the same way. If he had, he would have said so before she left.
Maybe she was to blame. He didn't know she was going to break the mirror. Should she have said something? Lay her heart on the line and hope he jumped under it as a safety net?
Simply dead ends… she thought. Then, once she was all alone that evening, the Twilight Princess turned her gaze to the eternal twilight and spoke unwaveringly.

"I love you." Three words that bind together two souls for an eternity of regret.
Yeah, short... angsty... and- oh, did I mention short?
