Here's another one! This one-shot is based off the episode of Pokémon "Odd Pokémon Out". For those of you who have seen this episode, you know that Ash's Grovyle falls in love with a Nurse Joy's Meganium, but after getting shot down by her for a wild Tropius that was also in love with Meganium, not only is Grovyle heart-broken, but Grovyle also evolves into Sceptile, but is rendered unable to use moves due to the rejection. Now, how am I going to add a ContestShipping twist to this and have Drew come out on top in the game of love? Well… read and find out!
Pokémon Academy was going on a field trip to a Pokémon Nursing Training Center, where tons of wild Pokémon on the reserve were living. Many nurses and doctors were at the academy, and every student was coming to the center to learn where Nurse Joys and other Pokémon M.D.s train to take care of Pokémon.
The teacher heading the field trip, Professor Rowan, was showing the kids the field where the Pokémon played when not being treated. Some of the Pokémon came up to play with the students, while the students also took care of and played with other Pokémon in the area, showing kindness amongst them.
Amongst the students were Dawn Berlitz, her boyfriend Kenny, Ash Ketchum, Brock, Brendan Birch, Gary Oak, amongst others.
"Students, this is the field on the reserve where the wild Pokémon live, eat, and play together," Professor Rowan said. "Now, I must implore that you be very careful around these Pokémon; they're very wary of strangers, to the point that if they sense something off, they can attack."
As if on cue, a ball made of grass then fell beside Ash, and he picked it up. Noticing a few baby Houndour, Ash smiled, and held the ball up before running at the little ones, while saying, "Want to play?"
The Houndour pups ran off in fear, misunderstanding, and then some older Houndoom confronted Ash in anger for frightening their kids. Knowing where this was going, Ash dropped the ball and ran off in fright, shouting, "AAAAHH!"
"Ash?" Brock said, as he was playing with an Espurr.
Brock and the others saw Ash running at them in fright, while being chased by the Houndoom.
"Houndoom attack!" All of the students shouted, and they started running, scared.
Professor Rowan noticed this, and said, "Everyone get to a safe spot!"
Soon, a Nurse Joy, as well another, younger girl with brown hair and blue eyes, wearing the nurse's uniform, came on the scene, in a car that they were driving.
"Don't worry, everyone! We're here!" Nurse Joy said. "May, you know what to do!"
"Right," May said, taking out a Poké Ball. "Venusaur, you're up!"
May released a Venusaur, and then May commanded, "Venusaur, Sweet Scent!"
Venusaur released a light green powder from the flower on its back, and then the Hondour calmed down completely. May sighed in relief, and then she turned to Nurse Joy, saying, "Mom, everything is okay."
"Good," Nurse Joy said. "Everyone, this is my adopted daughter, May."
"It's a pleasure to meet you all," May said, with a curtsy. "And this is my partner, Venusaur."
Venusaur came over to the others and then allowed the students to pet his head.
"I'm relieved everyone is okay," Professor Rowan said. "But Ash, I warned you to be careful. I know your intentions were good, but please, be wary of that next time."
"Yes, Professor…" Ash said, bowing his head.
"Has anyone seen Brendan?" Dawn asked, out of nowhere, while she was looking around.
"Who are you?" A voice said, out of nowhere.
"I see Brendan, Dawn! Um, right there…" Kenny said, pointing Brendan out.
Brendan was near a very large tree, and he was being confronted by a boy with green hair and green eyes; Brock said, "What the heck has gotten into Brendan?!"
"Brock, you know as well as I do that Brendan has always been the loner type. He likes going off on his own, but he's never been one to pick a fight unless necessary…" Ash said.
"Uh-oh…" Dawn said, worried.
May and Venusaur looked at each other in concern, while Nurse Joy said, "Oh, no! Not again…"
"Again?" Professor Rowan said.
"That's Drew Hayden. Drew is a local around this area. He comes around to play with the Pokémon, which is very sweet of him. The problem is, he often lays claim to territory in the reserve as his own. He'll let Pokémon come close, but unfamiliar humans are a no-no around his tagged areas," Nurse Joy explained. "Should a stranger come close, he'll pick a fight!"
"What do you mean "tagged", Nurse Joy?" Kenny asked.
"Not tagged like graffiti, but tagged, like he puts a symbol or one of his initials on the area and in a sense, tags it as his own," Nurse Joy explained. "He isn't the kind of boy to be mean, but he defends his claimed areas to protect the Pokémon."
"That explains a few things…" Dawn said.
May merely looked at the scene in sadness. She was used to seeing this sort of thing, but she still did not like the idea of it.
Drew then threw a punch at Brendan, who got hit in the face, and fell to the ground. However, Brendan got back up, and kicked Drew in the leg, causing Drew to fall down, before doing a sweep kick. Brendan jumped and dodged before landing another hit on Drew's face, and then the squabble went from bad to worse.
"Oh, no…" May said, worried.
"May, you know what to do! Stop those two from fighting." Nurse Joy said.
"Right, mom." May said, and then she and Venusaur ran on the scene.
"Will she be okay?" Kenny asked.
"This isn't the first time May and Venusaur have stopped one of Drew's fights," Nurse Joy said with a smile. "They're always fine afterwords."
"Venusaur, use Sleep Powder!" May commanded.
Venusaur released a sparkling blue powder from the flower on its back. However, the two boys kept attacking one another, and soon, only Brendan took a nap due to the sleep powder, while Drew stayed awake.
Drew was still upset, but May got in front of a sleeping Brendan, and then she said, "Stop!"
Drew immediately stopped, as some color came on his cheeks; May said, pleadingly, "Stop this, please! I know you want to protect the Pokémon's habitat, but picking fights with strangers like this is no way to go about it!"
Drew was stunned for a second, and then while lowering his head a bit, while his cheeks turned darker red, he said, "Understood…"
"Wow… Is it just me, or did Drew just stop in his tracks as soon as May confronted him?" Kenny said.
"I've seen this tons of times," Nurse Joy said. "I don't know why, but Drew refuses to hurt May in any way, shape or form."
"Brendan!" Professor Rowan said, as he tried to wake an injured, sleeping Brendan. "Please, wake up!"
"Urgh…" Brendan said, in pain.
"No time to lose," May said, as she looked at Brendan's wounds. "Let's get him back to the main building for treatment!"
"In the car!" Nurse Joy said, as May recalled Venusaur to its Poké Ball and then leaped into the car, before driving off.
Watching them leave, Drew sighed sadly, as he thought, 'Oh, May…'
Meanwhile, some suspicious-looking people were in the bushes, and then they were discussing Drew amongst themselves.
"Talk about skill in combat," A gold-haired, pigtailed woman with violet eyes said. "And he's the protector of the Pokémon in the area, huh? He'd be perfect for the team."
"You're right about that, Cassidy," A green-haired, brown-eyed man said. "We just need to convince him to join. Remember, Nurse Joy said that he doesn't take kindly to strangers."
"Let's see what we can do, Butch," Cassidy said. "We'll just talk to him, but let's change clothes."
Drew was picking apples and feeding them to some baby Rhyhorn when Butch and Cassidy approached Drew, in costumes. Drew got defensive, as the baby Rhyhorn ran away, and then he said, "Who are you?!"
"We're representatives from a Pokémon Reserve organization. We saw how you took down that outsider just now, and we can use your skill in defending the Pokémon." Cassidy lied.
"Beg your pardon?" Drew inquired, cocking an eyebrow.
"If there are a few misgivings you have, we can make sure that you can get whatever you want to make you feel a little better about joining us," Butch lied. "So, what is it that you want? We can get it for you."
Drew narrowed his eyes, thinking something was off, but he then looked in the direction of the reserve center where May was, and then he said, "There is something… Can Nurse Joy's daughter, May, come with me?"
"HUH?!" Butch and Cassidy said, surprised.
"Is that a problem?" Drew asked, narrowing his eyebrows.
"No, no, no, not a problem at all," Butch said. "We're just surprised you wanted to bring a friend."
"No, she's not just a friend to me," Drew said, blushing. "I… I'm in love with her."
"Really?" Cassidy said, surprised.
"Yeah… She… She's the one I really care about. She's the only person who can make me stop in my tracks when I get into a fight. I don't like hurting her, because she'd hate me for it." Drew explained, going red in the face, and shuffling his feet a bit.
"That explains why you stopped attacking when May and her Venusaur made the scene." Butch said.
"It's not just the Venusaur she has," Drew said. "She has a Meganium, too."
"Meganium's ability to heal would be perfect!" Cassidy said. "We'll make sure she comes along, too."
"Okay, but if she says no, then the deal is off." Drew said, seriously.
"Understood!" Butch and Cassidy said, together.
Meanwhile, inside the reserve center, May was bandaging Brendan's wounds while he was still out cold. She had her Meganium and her Venusaur out of their Poké Balls, and was doing her best to keep a straight face. She was still a tad upset with Drew, but was otherwise okay.
"Nurse Joy, May, will Brendan be alright?" Professor Rowan said, from outside the room.
"He'll be okay," Nurse Joy said. "It will take a little bit of Meganium's healing ability, along with May's care, but he'll be fine."
"That's good to hear." Ash said.
"You're on, Meganium." May said, as she put a hand on Brendan's forehead.
Meganium then used its flower's healing power on Brendan, and his wounds slowly started to heal. Brendan, feeling the warmth of Meganium's power, looking up to see May, in Meganium's light. Once Meganium stopped, May smiled with a light giggle. Brendan immediately went red in the face.
"Brendan?" Ash and Kenny said, worried about their friend.
"See," Dawn said. "Getting all of this care from May, and Brendan's already feeling like new."
"Maybe, but it looks more like true love to me." Brock said, ever the romantic.
Dawn and Kenny merely sweat dropped.
Brendan turned on his side away from May, and then May said, "Brendan will be okay after some rest. For the time being, take it easy."
May put Meganium back in its Poké Ball, and then left the room.
"Thank you, both," Ash said. "Check out Brendan's face. He must be running a really bad fever with a face that red."
Brendan merely sweat dropped, thinking, 'This isn't a fever…'
"Oh, it's a fever all right," Brock said to Dawn and Kenny. "A fever Brendan got from falling in love."
"Better than being wounded." Dawn said.
"It's no help, losing to Drew in that fight to begin with," Brock said, with Brendan opening his eyes. "Talk about humiliating."
"That explains a bit…" Dawn said.
"After that, no wonder Brendan's feeling down." Kenny said.
"Let's leave him alone for the time being," Dawn said, as she and the others left the room to let Brendan sleep. "Sleep is what Brendan needs, now."
Brendan sat up in the bed, and then he said, "May, mon amor…"
Meanwhile, May was still walking in the corridors of the reserve center. However, what she failed to notice was that Butch and Cassidy were in one of their mechas and they were approaching the center.
"May targeted." Cassidy said.
"Commence capture." Butch said, as he readied the grappler.
The mechanical arm burst through the walls, and grabbed May. She screamed, and soon, Nurse Joy and Professor Rowan came out of the nearest room, and saw May in trouble.
"May!" Nurse Joy said.
"Mom, help!" May said, in distress.
"What's going on in here?!" Brock shouted, as he, Kenny, Ash, and Dawn came.
"They have May!" Nurse Joy said, pointing to Butch and Cassidy.
"Who are they, anyway?" Kenny said, upset.
"Prepare for trouble…" Cassidy said.
"And make it double!" Butch finished.
"To infect the world with devastation." Cassidy said.
"To blight all people in every nation." Butch said.
"To denounce the goodness of truth and love." Cassidy said.
"To extend our wrath to the stars above." Butch said.
"Cassidy!" Cassidy said.
"And Butch, of course." Butch said, continuing.
"We're Team Rocket, circling Earth all day and night!" Cassidy said.
"Surrender to us now, or you'll surely lose the fight." Butch said.
"It's Cassidy and Hutch!" Ash said.
"My name's not Hutch! It's Butch!" Butch said, really upset with his name being mistaken again.
"Let's go! We've got work to do!" Cassidy said, as she and Butch got back inside the mecha and started to head over to where Drew was.
Speaking of Drew, he and Brendan were about to fight again.
"You again? Didn't you learn your lesson the first time?" Drew said, cracking his knuckles.
"Hey, a boy in love will do strange things." Brendan said, as he went red in the face.
"Excuse me?" Drew said.
"Once May sees how I creamed you in combat, she'll be eating out of the palm of my hand," Brendan explained. "So, let's get to it."
"Oh, no, you're not winning over my May!" Drew said, angry.
Drew made the first move by lunging at Brendan, and delivering a punch to the stomach. However, Brendan endured it and kept standing when Drew brought his fist back. Drew then kicked Brendan, causing him to fall to his knees, but he got back up, without a problem. Drew then sucker-punched Brendan, causing him to fall to the ground again. However, Brendan got back up, and did a sweep kick, but missed, as Drew then kicked Brendan in the stomach, causing Brendan to stumble back a bit.
Brendan noticed some flowers nearby, and when the image of May, laughing came up, Brendan found the motivation to keep fighting. Looking up into the tree, Brendan ran up the tree, and he went so fast, that Drew did not see where he went.
"Alright, you coward," Drew said. "Come on out and fight like a man!"
"Hey, sometimes you gotta attack from the front, other times, you need to approach from behind!" Brendan shouted; he then jumped from the tree branch and then punched Drew in the back, before running back up the tree.
Drew managed to stand back up, but Brendan then leaped from the tree, kicked Drew in the back, causing him to scream in major pain, before Brendan jumped back off, and landed in front of Drew, as he then fell to the ground, in pain. Brendan smirked in victory.
"Drew, we're back!" Cassidy shouted, from the machine.
"Huh?" Brendan said, looking up, and he saw the machine coming at them, with May in one of the arms.
"And as promised, here's May." Butch said, from inside, as he controlled the machine to put May down, gently.
"What the heck is that?" Brendan said, as he stood back up and looked at the scene; he blushed, as he saw May.
"Wait a second; isn't that Brendan from the twerps?" Cassidy said.
"And why isn't Drew all romantic at our return?" Butch said.
"It seems to me that Drew was the one who got jumped." Cassidy replied to her partner.
May, seeing the scene, started to run at the boys, and she said, "Oh, no!"
Brendan got hearts in his eyes and he said, "There she is!"
Running at Brendan, in what seemed like romantic sunlight, May shouted, "I'm coming!"
"I'm right here!" Brendan said, as he held out his arms.
"Don't worry!" May shouted, seemingly smiling at Brendan.
"I won't!" Brendan said, hearts still in his eyes.
"Here I come! Don't worry; I'll be right there!" May shouted, smiling.
"My love!" Brendan said, as he held out his arms for May… Who ran right past him.
"Huh?" Brendan said; realizing something was off, he turned around to see May, on her knees beside Drew, saying, "Drew! Drew, speak to me! Are you okay?"
Drew weakly managed to lift his head, and said, "Help me…"
"Right!" May said, as she got her first aid kit out and started to help Drew by treating his wounds.
"What the…?" Brendan said, as he watched the scene.
After some of the more serious wounds were treated, Drew managed to get on his knees. May smiled in relief, saying, "You're okay!"
She helped Drew get up, and Drew told May, "Thanks to you…"
"I'm glad you're alright…" May said, smiling. Drew then kissed May on the cheek, and then May hugged Drew by the neck a little bit, being gentle.
"I love you, May…" Drew said, finally.
Brendan shook his head, saying, "What's going on?!"
"Drew!" May said, kissing Drew's cheek.
"Oh, my May…" Drew said, hugging May back.
"Not that it matters… but don't those two look cute?" Cassidy said.
"Too cute," Butch said, agreeing. "Actually, those two go together like chocolate and strawberries."
"Poor Brendan; another victim of the heart," Cassidy said. "But he's clueless, just like a man."
"If anything, you can't get a needle between May and Drew if you even tried." Butch said.
Brendan recoiled in shock as an anime heart appeared behind him, and shattered into pieces. He then fell to his knees, while putting his hands on the ground, his mouth and eyes wide open with shock.
Meanwhile, the jeep where Professor Rowan and the others had gotten in to find May stopped at the scene. Ash got out of the car and then inquired to Brendan, "Brendan, what are you doing here?! Shouldn't you be in the bed?"
"Shot down…" Brendan muttered, his eyes still wide with shock.
"What the heck happened?" Kenny asked out loud. He and Dawn then turned back to Cassidy and Butch's machine. "Team Rocket! What did you do to Brendan?!"
"Hey, you're barking up the wrong Treecko looking at us," Butch said, from inside the machine. "Heartbreak isn't our style."
"That's just the waste product of a fight between Drew and Brendan." Cassidy explained.
"So Brendan was an idiot and came back to challenge Drew for payback, but he ended up losing…" Ash said.
"Um, wrong…" Butch said. "Brendan beat the pants off of Drew."
"Then why does Brendan look so upset while Drew seems to be unscathed?" Dawn inquired.
"I think I know," Brock said. "Brendan won the game of war and payback, but he was creamed in the game of love and romance."
"Brendan won and he lost? How'd you swing that?" Ash said. "Learn to make up your mind."
Everyone just groaned in annoyance with Ash's density.
Brendan was shivering out of the shock from the rejection. However, Butch said, "Flirting's over! Time to haul in our two Luvdisc!"
Controlling the arms of the machine, Butch grabbed May and Drew, who were still hanging on to one another.
"Hey, stop whining! The two of you are together! Isn't that enough?" Cassidy said, as Drew and May were holding one another while still in the grip of one of the mecha's hands.
"Oh, no!" Kenny, Brock, Dawn, and Ash shouted.
"They have May, too!" Nurse Joy said.
Brendan's eyes opened at hearing this.
"No! Someone get us out of here! Please!" May shouted.
Brendan stood up, with an angry look on his face.
"Someone help! Please!" May shouted, indignant on leaving.
Brendan's aura turned red and started to flare up, while growling.
"Whoa, look at Brendan." Kenny said.
Brendan, despite his heartbreak, managed to run up to the machine. He tried a sweep kick, but he only hurt his foot. Recoiling in pain, Brendan bit his lip and took a deep breath.
"Hey, what's with Brendan?" Ash said.
"Don't worry, May," Drew said. "Someone can get us out of this."
"I know…" May said, tears in her eyes.
Seeing May's tears, Brendan tried punching the hull of the machine, only for him to hurt his fist and once again recoiled in pain.
"What's going on with Brendan?! Most of the time, he can take a hit and keep going, but he's recoiling in pain!" Dawn said.
"He's fighting a robot, for starters, Dawn…" Kenny said, sweat dropping.
"Anyway, we have to help," Ash said, taking out one of his Poké Balls out. "Let's go, Corphish!"
"Corphish cor!" Corphish said, as it came out of his ball.
"Pachirisu, let's go!" Dawn said, sending Pachirisu out of her Poké Ball.
"Chipa chi! Chi Chi pachi!" Pachirisu said, coming out of her ball.
"Corphish, use Bubblebeam!" Ash commanded Corphish.
"Pachirisu, Nuzzle, go!" Dawn commanded.
Corphish smashed a glowing claw on one of the knees of the machine, and immediately after, Pachirisu rubbed its cheek on the leg until static was generated. Then, she nuzzled her cheek, shocking the machine. This shocked the machine, causing the arms to malfunction. This caused the hands to open and Drew and May were dropped. Drew hugged May, before saying, "I've got you!"
They landed on their feet, while May hugged Drew.
"May, Drew, you're safe!" Nurse Joy said.
"Mom!" May said, as she hugged Nurse Joy.
As Cassidy and Butch rose out from the rubble, Cassidy said, "That could have gone better…!"
"Let's get out of here!" Butch said, as he pushed a button and summoned their balloon.
Butch and Cassidy then got in the balloon, and started to fly away.
"Oh, no you don't!" Ash shouted.
"No!" Cassidy shouted.
"We'll take this one," May shouted. "Venusaur, let's go!"
"Flygon, you're up!" Drew shouted. "Use Gust!"
"Venusaur, Razor Leaf!" May commanded.
Flygon used its wings to kick up a strong wind and then Venusaur shot leaves from its back into the wind and then they picked up speed, popping the balloon, and sending the Team Rocket duo flying.
"Nice work, Venusaur!" May said, petting her Venusaur's head.
"You were amazing, too, Flygon," Drew said, as he pet Flygon's head, too. "But May… You were great."
"Thanks, Drew," May said, blushing. "You were good, too."
Drew then took May's hand and kissed her cheek, and then they hugged.
"Those two are great together!" Kenny said.
"What a sweet couple." Dawn said, as she took Kenny's hand, blushing.
Brendan watched Drew and May flirting with each other, and he sighed sadly.
Later that day at the center, May and Drew were feeding the Pokémon and having a great time together.
"Those two sure look happy." Dawn commented.
"Not just that," Nurse Joy said. "I've permitted Drew to be a ranger here to look out for the Pokémon, not just their playmate. Isn't that sweet?"
Everyone murmured in agreement, but Ash noticed Brendan off to the side, looking down at the ground, and tears streaming from his eyes. Looking to Nurse Joy, Ash told her, "I'm worried about Brendan, Nurse Joy… Will he be okay?"
"Nothing's wrong with Brendan," Nurse Joy said. "He's just feeling the pain of a broken heart."
"The fight certainly can't fix something like that, Ash." Kenny said.
"He's just going through a hard time at the moment," Dawn said. "I'm sure he'll get over it, but the thing with emotional pain is that they say that it's the kind of pain that never heals."
"Not necessarily true," Kenny said. "But still, I'm sure Brendan will get over it, soon…"
As everyone got on the bus to leave, Brendan was still off on his own, his heart broken, and when he saw May and Drew in the fields, both kissing each other, Brendan shed more tears and looked away, thinking, 'I'll never recover...'
He then looked down on the floor, and shed some tears.
Meanwhile, May and Drew were just about as happy as they could be, and were almost oblivious to Brendan's broken heart...
Okay, I get it, bittersweet ending, I know! Bitter for Brendan, sweet for May and Drew, but remember, in the episode I based this off of, Ash's Sceptile gets heartbroken and is rendered unable to use moves, and if I was going with what this episode had in mind, I had to do what the episode did!
And has anyone noticed that with any and all episodes where a Pokémon from one of the main characters falls in love, it always ends in heartbreak? I think the creators do that deliberately to prevent any party changes that we may dislike. For example, in the Diamond and Pearl episode "Three Sides To Every Story", the Original Series episode, "Love, Totodile Style", etc., it always ends in heartbreak. Then again, with Brock's running gag, I'm sure all of us Pokémon fans are probably used to such things at this point...
