It was odd having so many vampires on her lawn. She has never met one before in all her years. At first, she thought of them as a youth group that had gotten lost in the woods. But they looked too pale and well…a bit dead in their eyes.
She was about to offer them food, since she baked about 20 pies for her baking contest tomorrow. She had too much in her house, too much for the three of them in her home. Too much even for Jason. Their timing was perfect. As long as her pecan pie was safe, then they could have some of the other pies.
The young man who looked to be the most pale of them all spoke saying that it was time for her to remember. Remember what exactly? She didn't know. Adele thought about it for a moment, "Did I forget to pay for the cookies again?"
A girl who looked very familiar giggled and it endeared Adele to her even more, especially since she looked a lot like Michelle. Speaking of which, she should call Michelle and her son Corbette that they have guests. The young man in front of her then spoke calmly to her, "No, you do not owe us money. But I do have something for you." He brought out a wad of cloth from his pocket. Slowly, he brought it to her face and making sure she had her full attention on it, revealed it to be a golden heart pendant.
She couldn't explain it but her heart started to race as she opened the locket. Unknowingly, she held unto a pendant that she had kept ever since she was ten years old. The pendant that she had given to Sookie before she left them all. And in that one small second, Adele remembered everything.
Adele was soon awakened with the feel of a warm wet cloth on her forehead, it grew cold and moist against her forehead as a fan blew on her face. Slowly, she opened her eyes and saw Sookie. Her granddaughter that she had lost for so many years. She was beautiful. Her blond hair was just like her mother's, it fell and moved gracefully around her. Her eyes were round and rich brown. Sookie wasn't looking at her; she seemed worried and sad as she wrung the face towel in the basin again.
"I used to do the same trick when you and Jason had a fever."
Sookie jolted and smiled in relief. "Are you okay, Gran? Do you really remember me?"
Adele laughed and sat up slowly, when she sat up straighter she motioned Sookie to sit next to her on the couch. Her granddaughter looked a bit hesitant. "I'm fine. It's going to take more than that to put me down." Sookie nodded before standing up, she brushed her dress' skirt and sat down with her Gran She hugged her granddaughter. Adele quickly let go and chuckled. "Excuse me. That must've been too forward."
"Not at all. It was nice." She smiled at her grandmother before hugging her tightly.
When they both let go, Adele put her hands on her granddaughter's shoulders. "Now, I need to get a real good look at you."
After a few moments of Adele watching and cooing at how her granddaughter looked, Godric and Eric entered the room. Adele turned to look at both of them before standing to hug both of them.
The telepathic faery hybrid saw a lot of things, including memories that weren't seen with her own eyes. But watching Godric and Eric both hug her gran was definitely new and very out of character from both highly aggressive and dangerous vampires.
"You both look the same." Gran gushed and laughed about whatever Godric spoke to her about. Everything hit her at once. She was thrilled and excited. Every little detail and memory was coming back to her.
Sookie took a quick glance at Eric, he was talking to Adele. She wondered how he could change so easily from someone she knew her whole life to someone she didn't recognize.
Eric's smiles were softer and genuine. His back was slightly more hunched to talk to her Gran. His eyes seemed to glow even brighter than usual. She couldn't help but wish that maybe someday Eric would be that way with her.
Just then, his eyes landed on her. And she quickly turned away before realizing that it made things worse for her after getting caught. Sookie heard them leave, with Adele telling them about her cleverly hidden shotgun.
Everyone had left; one by one they had said their goodbyes. All of them wishing her good luck and to keep safe. Godric and Pam took longer than expected to say their farewell. Pam looked like she was about to cry after. They all left, with their super powered speed or flight.
All that was left was Eric. Adele was already in her bedroom, sleeping quietly. It was just both of them in the living room.
The couch shifted as more weight pressed against it. The wooden legs groaned at the added mass. His scent warned her of his presence. Sookie's hesitant eyes lifted to see Eric's unreadable expression. Disappointed that it had changed so quickly to something so cold and distant from what she saw with her Gran.
"Hi." She spoke.
"We have glamoured your parents and sibling, Jason. And also, the others who have potential connections with you."
Sookie nodded.
"Are you ready?"
Sookie lifted her chin and raised an eyebrow. "What do you think?"
He chuckled and gently cupped her chin with his fingers. He was at ease again…but with her now.
She held her breath and tried to calm herself down. Remember your training! He's testing you!
As Eric leaned into her closer, his eyes fixated on hers. It was intense and it was difficult to focus and keep herself restrained. She wanted to disappear. It was her shyness that made her want to flee. It was what he wanted. To make her squirm and nervous.
She gulped, he smirked. Damn.
She tipped her chin lower, but she raised her eyes and batted them at him. Playing the innocent virgin…which she technically was. But hey, she wasn't that innocent when it comes to her new knowledge, thanks to Eric. It was time to show him how much she learned.
She slowly licked and bit her lower lip, it was slow and hesitant, but that's how he wanted it. His eyes wavered to Sookie's brown pools and to her lips. He was torn between what he wanted to stare at. She captivated him.
He reminded himself that he had to separate his attraction towards Sookie when they started their…lessons. But it was still fun to watch her learn. His legs twitched when her hands slowly rested on his thighs. That was surprisingly forward of her.
It was his turn to surprise her when he cupped both hands onto her cheeks. He quickly pulled her closer and put his lips on hers. The contact was so gentle and light; it almost didn't feel like a kiss. Only a whisper of it. A promise. Her eyes slowly closed.
You will come back to me. Sookie's eyes opened wide, it was the first time she heard Eric's thought. She tried desperately to go back, but failed.
"I think you are ready." He chucked as he pulled. "Your face just fell in disappointment."
"It's called acting." Sookie grumbled as she stood up. She felt embarrassed and even a little bit flushed. She stood up and crossed her arms, "I'm going to my room now."
Eric stood behind her and pulled her by the hips towards him. "Sookie, no need to feel ashamed by this. Everyone goes through this…phase."
Sookie's back stiffened and sighed. "I guess this is coming from your experience."
He bit her earlobe and chuckled. "Mostly, yes."
Sookie elbowed him on the chest before turning around to face him. "You're insufferable."
"You like it." Eric smirked as he pulled her closer again.
She was confused, was this really Eric? What was he playing at? Sookie closed her eyes in exasperation and gently bumped her head against his chest.
"Come back to me." He whispered. Now she was definitely sure of reading his thoughts. Eric's grip tightened on her. "You will come back to me Sookie Stackhouse." He sounded confident. It endeared her how much he believed in her.
"Eric…" She hesitated. She was afraid of what to say, what to feel or how to react. Yes, she had feelings for Eric. No matter how much she fought them. But, wouldn't this destroy their relationship? With Godric and Pam?
He sensed her uncertainty and quickly reassured her. "We can talk about this some other time. After everything has been dealt with."
"Why not now?" Sookie spoke up. The thought of maybe not giving a chance at something with Eric scared her. She wanted to know before she…failed her super top secret mission. "I mean…before this thing happens."
He gently shook his head, "You're afraid." He didn't exactly expound with what he said. That's Eric for you. He could be blunt or vague. And in times like these, he was both.
"Yes."
"You are brave. You are intelligent. You are strong. You can't and will not fail, Sookie Stackhouse. And I will wait. No matter how long it will take."
And with that, he was gone in a flash. Despite of her irritation, she smiled. "Goodnight Eric Northman."
It was useless. Sookie tossed and turned on her bed. She threw the blankets off, only for her to put it back on. It was only 5 a.m.
Eric usually slept at this time. She dropped her head on the pillow and groaned in frustration. She grabbed a robe next to her bed and slipped it on. She quietly walked out of room, to the kitchen. Only to find her grandmother sitting there.
"Gran, what are you doing up so early?" Sookie smiled as she took a chair in front of her.
"I couldn't sleep. You too, huh?"
"Yup."
"I just brewed some tea. Here you go." Sookie grabbed a cup and started pouring. " Would you like to hear stories about us?"
"Of course." She didn't mention the fact that she had already read up what she needed to know and remember about them. Although, it felt completely impersonal.
They exchanged stories about themselves and their families. Sookie loved how Adele spoke with so much expressions, she could hear her talk for days about their family. With her special ability, it truly felt as if she was there throughout.
"Jason was sick with chicken pox, and all his baseball buddies got it too. He was so upset."
"I'm guessing they didn't win?"
They both laughed. "You should've seen his face when he heard their team lost. He was close to tears."
Sookie smiled and took another sip of her tea. Adele was watching her and her smile faded. "Are you okay, Gran?"
"Jason has never cried about anything ever since you were gone. Not when he lost the baseball game, not when his dog 'Roy' died, not even when he broke his arm when he fell down the tree. I always thought that maybe he refused to cry because he had already felt pain…so deep that the other insignificant things were nothing to him." Adele spoke as she was drifting to one memory to another, with every memory Sookie followed. "He always blamed himself for losing you. No matter how much we tried to convince him that it wasn't his fault. I wanted to tell the truth about you so much. It pained me to see so much sadness on you and him and even from your own child. When Godric knew, he offered to glamour me to forget. And I accepted." Adele wept softly, they were sacrifices she had to endure along with her relatives. It was too much for her to bear that she'd rather not remember anything real.
Sookie wiped her tears. "Gran, I need to know everything. On why Godric and Eric are keeping things from me. What made you decide to let Godric adopt me? I mean…not that I don't trust your judgment…I just need to know."
"I understand. But are you sure? If you want the whole truth, you better be ready to take everything. And I mean everything. And anything."
"Yes. I can take it Gran. I'm all grown up. I need to know all of this."
Gran sipped her tea and set it down. "I made Godric and Eric to never mention us 'til you was ready. I didn't want to risk you remembering everything. Don't doubt their trust and love for you, they care for you greatly. I made them keep it all from you."
"But why?"
"Since you couldn't be glamoured, probably because of that gift of yours…I asked him to keep everything from you and one day you'll soon forget us because there were no evidences and no reminders. It was something we all agreed to, just so you couldn't remember Uncle Bartlett."
"The night I found out about what he did to you…that was the same night I decided that you had to leave." She wiped a few tears out of her face and sniffed back before breathing in. "I couldn't find you one night during a Sunday family dinner. One of the guests said Bartlett was outside with you on the porch. So, I went outside to find you both, only to see Eric close to killing him. Before I could react, I heard you sobbing and I ran towards you. Eric, he became someone else I couldn't recognize. He held Bartlett by the throat and had him lifted up. I could see that Bartlett was starting to turn purple. Then, Godric came flying down. Ordering for Eric to stop and to let him go. Eric refused and Bartlett started choking and crying for me to help him." She stopped talking and started to weep silently. Gran took Sookie's hand and whispered, "I am giving you a chance to let this go, but if you want Sookie, read my mind and learn the truth."
Sookie stared at their joined hands and took a deep breath. "Okay."
It was night; they were hidden amongst the trees. Sookie was crying hysterically in her arms. Then her head snapped towards Eric and Bartlett.
"Gran! Gran! I'm so sorry!" Sookie kept whimpering and clutching her waist. "I'm sorry!"
In a second Godric had appeared. His eyes were wide and immediately told Eric to let Bartlett go. Eric refused. He growled. While his victim kept choking. "This…disgusting piece of shit! I should kill him…for what he did to Sookie. That's right fucker…I know what you did. You think no one saw you?" Eric's voice kept getting louder and angrier with each word. He kept his grip tighter and snarled into his face. "A vermin as repulsive as you deserve a slow and painful death."
Godric grew calm and spoke plainly. "What did he do?" When Eric didn't speak, probably trying to control his anger, Godric bellowed. "WHAT DID HE DO, ERIC?"
Eric snarled and threw Bartlett on the ground, his heel crushing the man's throat. "He tried to touch Sookie. He probably already did before."
Adele cried out loud, hugging Sookie while she kept weeping. Her head whipped again to look at Godric, his face unreadable. Adele spoke, barely a whisper and raspy. "Let him go."
Godric spoke slowly, "Release him, Eric."
Bartlett was close to dying; his eyes were already colored red because of the blood stream shooting up into them. Eric spat on him before kicking him away. The body was limp as it landed on the ground, and then he started to breathe.
Adele asked Sookie, "Darling, we ain't mad at you. Nobody is. What did Uncle Bart do to you? What happened?"
Sookie looked at her Gran, her eyes brimming with tears. "I heard him Gran. How he thought I looked sexy and that my skin looked good…and my hair smelled delicious…and then he brought me here to play with him…" She sniffed before taking deep breaths. "Then when he started playing and touching, Eric came down and grabbed him."
Adele hugged her and whispered that it was okay, everything was gonna be okay. "Tell him that he is no longer welcome. Take him far away from us!"
At that, Eric grinned like a rabid wolf. "With pleasure."
Godric again held restraint, "My child, control yourself. I have taught you better than this, do not fail me now."
In an instant, Eric growled and sighed as slowly as possible. His demeanor has changed and he became very stoic and cold. "I apologize for my actions. It will not happen again."
"Everything started to make sense Sookie. Oh my, they were signs! I couldn't even see them!" Adele took a sharp breath. "The reason why you never wore your best dress whenever a family gathering was happening. The reason why you hated to wash your hair because you didn't like anybody else sniffing it. You always wanted to wear pants and sweaters even if the weather was burning. You never finished taking a bath unless you were all scrubbed red because you didn't want to feel dirty."
Adele started crying and whispering her apologies. "This should never be suffered by a child…or anyone by that matter. I know keeping this from you and making Godric and Eric lie for me, was wrong. But…I just wanted you to live a better life. I am so sorry Sookie."
Sookie took Adele's hand swiftly and kissed it lovingly. "I can't remember this, but as I know it now, it doesn't make my love for you in any way worst. You did what you had to do. You had no choice and you were afraid for me. You were carrying all my fears and pain with you this whole time." Sookie wiped her tears and sniffed. She gripped her Gran's hand tighter. "You had all this weight on your shoulders, but you kept being brave and courageous. You stood up after Eric Northman, right after he killed a man in front of you! Don't blame yourself for anything Gran. I understand now…completely."
